Lakeview Park is nestled in the back of the upscale Lakeview neighborhood in Delray Beach. The…read moredesirable neighborhood dates back to the early 1970's and mainly features large, single family homes. Lakeview Park is the neighborhood park for this community. Park amenities include a boat ramp, pavilion which can be rented, picnic pavilion, picnic table, playground, restroom, wand walking path. My favorite part of the park was the gorgeous view of Lake Ida, a popular spot for boating, fishing, and bird watching. The lake was named after the wife of Delray Beach's founder and was once a part of a huge farm. The area was later transformed into a park in the early 1970s. There are two other, much larger parks on Lake Ida, Lake Ida East Park and Lake Ida West Park. An interesting thing I noticed at Lakeview Park is that it had a number of new trees planted. This is the same thing I have been seeing at all of the parks in Delray Beach. The trees are part of the Delray Beach tree planting program which aims to put in 10,000 trees by 2025. To complete the goal the city entered into an agreement with Community Greening in 2022 funded by the Tree Trust Fund. Community Greening is an Urban Forestry nonprofit with the mission to increase South Florida's tree canopy. I love the work they are doing and it is great to learn more about them. If you want to get involved in planting more trees there is a list of events they need volunteers for on their website as well as a list of days they are giving away trees.

There is a big parking area and a boat launch with space for cars with trailers. The park has a big pavilion that can be reserved from the city (see the web page for info). Picnic tables throughout, barbecue grills, a nice playground, a permanent building with restrooms and a walking trail that goes around the park. From the lakeside, you can enjoy the birds, perhaps do some fishing, or watch over in the distance as the cars go northbound on I-95. I found it quite peaceful. Delray Beach did a good job reserving this as a green space and ensuring that this part of the city…read morehas good drainage and buffer to keep the neighborhood in good shape and limit sprawl. This is a large park but it's quite passive. There are no ballfields or playground here, just a nice walking trail and open space area. On this Saturday morning when I stopped by, there were some fellow friendly folks who were walking around the park with me. Nice! Leashed dogs are permitted and all that I encountered were also friendly. There is no specific parking, just pull onto the grass but be careful you don't sink in or damage it! It doesn't have a parking lot but you can just pull over on the side of the road. The park opened in the summer of 2006 and was created with the input of area residents. It has been kept in a natural state with pine trees and grasses. Residents were concerned about limiting traffic to the community. Instead of a playground, the park has a walking/exercise trail that runs through the park. Some of the path is paved and some of it is natural earth. Unlike the parks in Boca which ban all pets, this park is very dog friendly. They even include poo bags so you can pick up after your pooch. Along the trail are benches and there is a bike rack. I enjoyed walking around and while exercising I saw someone else walking their dog and another person riding their bike. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but it is a peaceful and safe. The park is open 8 AM until dusk.

The beach area is nice but my wife and I prefer to take the weekends to walk and burn off unwanted calories while shopping on Atlantic Ave. Some of the main attractions are the Cornell Art Museum, Pineapple Grove, Old School Square, Roccos Tacos, Farmhouse Kitchen, Delray Marketplace and the newly renovated Sunday Village. Parking is a major concern, but after circling the area there are parking garages, private lots and city managed lots. Beware: You will get a citation if you parallel park in front of the restaurants along Atlantic Ave without paying online. Lots of violation tickets on the windshields of vehicles.

It's got a nice nightlife with plenty of good restaurants, live music and outdoor bars. Atlantic Ave is the main street the stretches from I95 to the beach and it's walkable. Parking can be a problem. There's a free ( before 4) lot at Old School Square and also some street parking by the police station and library. There's pay by the hour lots and all day parking for a fee once you pass Swinton. Pineapple Grove is the arts district with public art and Galleries. Plan an evening at the Arts Garage for some music or comedy. I did notice there are a lot of empty store fronts and in my last visit everything past the railroad tracks closed around 9:30 and that was a Saturday night. Not to worry, there are plenty of good restaurants and a vibrant night life open from Swinton to the railroad tracks.
