Delray has come a long way since the 80s and 90s. Want to visit a "quaint" beach town with great restaurants and a bit of a night life but you don't want to go to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, visit Delray Beach in South Florida. It's located between Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. You can fly either to Fort Lauderdale or West Palm beach airports. It's an inviting cute town with lots to offer such as golf, arts, festivals, museums, great food and a night life. Walking is easy in the downtown area but if you don't feel like walking, download the FreeBee app to hail a ride in an energy efficient transportation/ride around town.

In the 1980's the downtown was blighted and there was a forty percent vacancy rate. The Community Redevelopment Agency was created in 1985 and they fixed the traffic problems and restored the historic buildings. Concerned citizens got together and raised seven million dollars to restore the city's first elementary school and high school into what is now called Old School Square. The 1903 elementary school building was turned into the Cornell Museum of Art and History in 1990 and the 1925 high school auditorium became the Crest Theatre in 1993. Also in 1993 the City Of Delray Beach was awarded the honor of being named an All-American City by the National Civic League for their restoration of the downtown area. In 2001 Atlantic Ave underwent a major renovation and started it's incarnation as a spot for night life. Today you can visit an array of bars, restaurants, art galleries, and shops. One of the reasons I love Delray Beach is it is a city that celebrates it's history while looking to it's future. One of my favorite historic buildings in the downtown is the Colony Hotel which was built in 1926 during Florida's land boom years. The Spanish Colonial style hotel was first named the Alterep Hotel. The grand hotel was only open a few years before the Great Depression struck and it was abandoned. It ended up being saved by a happy accident. Honeymooners George and Agnes Boughton ended up in Delray Beach after opting to not take a planned cruise out of Key West. The fell in love with the hotel and bought it in 1935, renaming it the The Colony. The couple restored the hotel to it's former glory and it is still in operation today. Lining the avenue are both cheap eats and fine dining. You can eat at the Office, Buddha Sky Bar, Johnnie Brown's, Gary Rack's Farmhouse Kitchen, Park Tavern, Rocco's Tacos, Big Al's Steaks, and Cabana El Ray. Shops sell jewelry, clothes, home goods, accessories. Art galleries and coffee and ice cream shops can also be found here. At the other end of the avenue is the historic Blue Anchor Pub, a 19th century pub transported here from England. Across the street is Veterans Park, a lovely place to sit and watch the yachts cruise down the Intracoastal. Atlantic Ave ends at the ocean so you can take a stroll on the beach after shopping and eating. Free parking is non existent in the downtown so prepare to pay for metered parking if you are lucky enough to find it. In not there is a city garage next to the IPIC. Delray Beach has changed from a fish packing and pineapple processing district in it's early history to a downtown destination filled with innovative restaurants, art, and culture. Downtown truly has something for everyone to enjoy.

Downtown Delray Beach. What can I say? It will take you one visit to love this downtown. I strongly suggest you plan your activities before arriving as there is so much to see. It's an easy walk to the beach also. You will find every type of food, a dozen icecream and dessert shoppes, small shoppes, big shoppes, a giant food hall, iMax theater and pretty much anything your heart desires. Oh and all the locals enjoy eating and hanging out here too. We really don't need to go anywhere else. Downtown Delray Beach has it all.

Great Sunday spent in Downtown Delray Beach.

Love this little city by the beach. Great restaurants and awesome beach! The people are so happy and friendly. Love to visit on Sundays for a great brunch and walk on the beach afterwards. Visit at night for live music and spectacular dining.

Love this beachside town! Lively but chill atmosphere, great restaurants, bars and shops. I've been to a couple of wonderful festivals here. The Bacon & Bourbon Festival (now in Wellington) and the Garlic Festival. And you're only about a mile, if that, from the beach. Go pay this quaint beachside town a visit, I'm sure you'll love it too.

Delray's a fantastic town. It is much more down to earth than Palm Beach and there are plenty more affordable stores. The beach is absolutely beautiful and people are friendly. It's "the city by the sea". I'd say stroll around, look at the stores (there are many of them) and maybe take a walk on the beach. Things are leisurely and the weather is often wonderful. Delray also has a stunning library. There are plenty of places to eat and every type of place imaginable. There is also every type of store imaginable. And it doesn't have the frantic pace of Miami or Fort Lauderdale nor the ultra upscale opulence of Palm Beach. I love Delray and recommend spending some time there. It maybe my favorite place in the world.

Downtown Delray Beach, Village by The Sea is a shopping area and restaurant row in Palm Beach County. It is located on East Atlantic Blvd. I've lived in South Florida for several years and on a Saturday night, I decided to checkout Downtown Delray Beach for dinner with some friends. Some Palm Beach Yelpers and family members had given me a list of restaurants in Palm Beach County (the criteria, I didn't want to go to a Senior Restaurant) and almost all of them ended up on Atlantic Blvd. First of all, I was shocked at the number of restaurants in this area and the large crowds of people. The Downtown strip is somewhat similar to both Riverwalk in Fort Lauderdale or Lincoln Road in Miami Beach (it has more Designer Stores). The Indoor/Outdoor Seating and most of the restaurants was similar to Lincoln Road, with the one big difference that at peak season, you'll need a reservation on the weekends. I understand most people book 7-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday night reservations two weeks in advance. There is both valet parking and flat fee parking lots.

We had a great morning at the beach. We stopped at the local Starbucks in town and picked up our continental picnic breakfast. We walked the block or so down to the beach and borrowed a hotel chair. It wasn't busy at all but I can see if it were they would probably not like us borrowing their chairs. It was a bit overcast with a breeze which was perfect to get our toes in the sand and soak up a little sea air. The sand was clean and litter free. It looks well maintained and there were a good bunch of people out. Very cool beach area with lots of activity. People were out walking with and without dogs. Beach goers were hanging out and in the ocean swimming. It was like 10am but already warm enough. If you get a chance to visit Delray stop at the beach it's beautiful. The town looks super cute too! Lots of restaurants and shops.

    It's always beautiful here!

It's just the best experience around. Lots of restaurants, shops and street fairs, Delray is the only urban experience for miles around. The shops are mostly open during the day but the restaurants and bars stay open late unlike Boca Raton. The crowd is diverse, the music is everything, the food is from every walk of life. There's lots of civic pride and it shows. Come visit and support the locals so they can support themselves.

What is left of it makes for cramped seating unless you are willing to walk, which we did, but had we been with our in-laws it would not have been that easy. I get that someone needs to be here to open it but this was a disappointment. Once I did find a spot to park, it was a nice walk through the mangroves and along the boardwalk over the dunes to the beach. I found a seat, probably trespassing from one of the communities but the chair was comfy. With my coffee in hand, I was here for over an hour as the Sun slowly came over the horizon. I was undisturbed. Other beachgoers walking back and forth but folks seemed to get my vibe and did not approach. There is a beached sailboat here since December. Maybe it's still here when you visit. It made for some fun photos. There is a bathroom facility and a beach shower and a picnic pavilion. Parking across the street requires feeding a meter. Don't forget that. It took forever for us to find parking, so we ended up doing valet near this beach. I was sunburnt from the day before so was on a quest to find an umbrella to rent. We also appreciated that there was less seaweed and calmer water than Boynton Beach's Ocean Front Beach Park. The surrounding green was gorgeous. Where we entered there was a giant pipe though that smelled a little like cigars, but we sat far enough away for it not too bother us too much. If you don't mind walking a bit for parking, this beach is a great pick.
