McCaffrey's Laytonville Auto Wreckers

Steve was helpful and kind ---it was incredibly comforting to see a friendly face after what happened. He only charged us for a half hour when he could have easily charged us more considering the trouble he had finding us and coming out at that hour. I wouldn't usually say this about getting my car towed but I have to say it was a pretty pleasant experience, all considered. Thanks Steve!

During the next two weeks I asked everyone I could for a ride to go retrieve my belongings from my vehicle & finally found someone willing to drive me. I had to take the day off work because the tow yard is closed on the weekends and is only open during bankers hours from 8-5. I called when we started out to make sure they knew we were coming & the guy said no problem although he would charge a fee for coming to unlock the gate. I figured he might want $50 and was fine with that. When I finally arrived-and only 30 minutes after they'd closed-I called and told the guy we were there. He then told me he was eating dinner and would come open the gate for $200! I was dumbfounded and explained that I couldn't afford to pay that much & the man grumbled something else and hung up. About 10 minutes later a truck pulled up next to us and a rough looking guy growled out the window that we needed to get the f*** off his property and that we were causing his cameras to go off. When we tried to explain our situation he told us to get our sh** together and get off his property again. What happened to customer service? He wasted his time and gas to show up there anyway, would it really have hurt him to unlock the gate and allow us to grab the stuff from my vehicle? I live almost 3 hours away and now will have to try to figure out how to come back down here, again. As hard as it was the first time, I am not real optimistic about it happening a second time. With all the money that tow companies charge, I doubt it would have really hurt him to have a little compassion and try to be helpful this one time. I mean he obviously won't have a hard time figuring out some other way to squeeze the next guy who comes in after having hard times. What a jerk! I hope that someone else will call a different company and not give this man anymore business he doesn't appreciate.

Short verion: I…read morewish people like Tino & Nancy @ Orca ran more of the places I do business, they improved everything they were involved with. Tino runs an outfit with character, courtesy, and proper old-school know-how. Detailed version: Our Class A RV had some trouble (lean fuel condition, lead to a stall - frozen starter then left us stuck) on the way up the coast soon after leaving Mendo. It was early in the day so we figured we would have no trouble using our Good Sam membership. 9 hours later, we still hadn't had tow dispatched. Light was fading, a CHP officer that stopped by said he didn't expect Good Sam to handle it in fewer than three days, so I started calling around myself. I called Orca and Tino answered the phone. He listened to me calmly, as I explained that the CHP said a local tow-shop owner lived about a mile from where our rig was stuck, had the correct size truck, and believed it was him. Tino candidly said it wasn't, but he knew who they were talking about. He gave me the Owner's name, shared their contact info, and wished us luck. Integrity. I called the CHP's outfit, got a dispatcher willing to contact that owner, and was told they wouldn't be able to take a swing at it till the following afternoon. After plenty of additional calls to dispatchers as far as Willits and Ukiah (really), including Good Sam admitting they had given up trying, I tried Orca again. I explained I'd been working with Good Sam all day, had no luck, and asked if they'd be willing to try. He agreed and even dispatched a 2nd driver to help. Now after midnight, not only did Tino come out, he stopped to pick us up (we'd gotten a ride into town, assuming we'd need to sleep somewhere other than the side of the highway). When we got back to our rig, we met the 2nd driver (Nancy!). With tow-trucks and all their lights at the front and back of the RV, I asked, before the hassle of towing, if they'd mind if I tried shorting the starter to 'limp' into town with the lean fuel issue. Not only were they willing to let me give it a shot, Nancy volunteered to see if it would unfreeze while I tried starting it from inside. To keep this story from getting any longer, in the end, we were able to get the rig started and Tino and Nancy followed behind with their lights covering our back as we limped along at 5-15 mph all the way into town. It's seems a rare thing these days, to get someone on the phone who will take the time to listen, never mind responding with integrity and know-how. With Tino and Nancy we were able to troubleshoot the issue, avoid dropping the drive-line and towing the RV (they shake themselves apart running on flat ground, forget about stresses involved lifting for a tow) and get the rig safely to town. I don't often get stuck somewhere I need someone else covering me, but I can tell you I'd happily have that someone be Orca towing anytime it comes up. They're good people, who know their business, and care enough to decline a tip and ask instead we check in once we get home safely. Wish I ran across folks like this more often. Thanks again Tino.
