Horrible Experience with Smith Automotive Towing and Recovery If I could give zero stars, I would. Smith Automotive Towing and Recovery is by far the worst towing company I have ever dealt with. My car broke down, and after calling them, I was told a truck would arrive within 30 minutes. TWO HOURS later, I was still waiting, only to be met with a rude dispatcher who clearly couldn't care less. When the driver finally arrived, he was unfriendly and unprofessional, acting like he was doing me a favor. To make matters worse, they charged me an outrageous fee for a simple tow--way more than they originally quoted! The worst part? My car was damaged in the process, and they refused to take responsibility, blaming me instead. Do yourself a favor and stay FAR away from this company. These guys are fantastic. The moment Brian arrived to retrieve and tow my Harley he introduced himself very professional and asked if everyone was OK. He very clearly informed me of what was going to be done and what I should do going forward with the tow as well as great advice on how to deal with my insurance. You can tell he cares about his job and how he represents his company. If I have any issues or needs this guy I'd call any day I highly recommend. These guys helped recover me and my 7600lb 4x4 van from Usal Beach, after I (stupidly) hydrolocked the motor. Broken down on the highway in the boonies on a Sunday, I was saved by the best tow truck driver ever, Bryan Stencil. He is so kind, thoughtful and professional. Bryan made sure my four legged traveling companion and I were safe and comfortable throughout our journey. I appreciate that his boss offered to fix my car, but I was already heading to my long time mechanic when my clutch finally failed. This trip was over two days, and Bryan ensured we were safely housed in a nice motel that he informed me will be covered by AAA through 'trip interruption' coverage. Because I travel the 101 corridor often, I kept Bryan's card and know that if we have trouble in the future, the capable folks at Smith Auto will be there for us. Truly above and beyond service. What a great company and people, just really the best. A recent mishap put me in a bind and stuck, and in need of a tow truck to free my vehicle from its precarious situation. I was visiting friends in the mountains off the blacktop, fast forward hours later - while preparing to leave, backing out of their steep drive high centering my car on the only rock around, I'm stuck? My buddy comes around and I pile out to see, and sure enough the car rolls over this boulder just right and literally gets stuck on the high spot. After determining we could not free my ride from its spot, now we shift to getting a truck to where we were in a timely fashion and myself back on the road to complete my remaining journey. My buddy makes the first call, a fair rate but more than an hour away, second call literally double the rate and time of the first guy... As I call Smith and explain my situation briefly, she gets Kevin on the phone, my buddy explains where we are and again briefly what the problem is and he states he is close and can be there directly and as well he is between the two other guys prices and closer to the first guys lowest price. We have found our guy. About 30 minutes later we can hear him winding his way up the mountain and to our location where my ride is stuck. Around the bend comes about the biggest wrecker you can possibly drive up this private gravel roadway. The young man quickly assesses the situation and gets to work freeing my car, within 15 minutes he has it up on blocks and the tow truck wench and hoist attached and slowly works the vehicle free from its once trapped position. All told in under an hour upon arrival, my ride was loose from its stuck place, the tow truck driver paid and on his way and myself back on the road. He was even so gracious and kind that he only charged me for a portion of his time, not even the full hourly rate - stating it "only took him a few minutes" this type of kind personal service is why this company has several 5 star reviews just like this. 5 Stars - the gold standard for the area if you find yourself in need of roadside assistance in northern Mendocino. 00745 read more

The tow truck driver, Brian I believe, was vaping weed while driving and gave false information to Uhaul to prevent me from getting a much deserved refund. When I told his boss, Peter Smith, about his driver vaping weed while driving he told me I was trying to ruin people's lives, referring to his driver, not the other people on the road and myself. Peter tried explaining to me that weed is the safest thing when nobody should be under the influence of anything while driving especially not a tow truck towing another vehicle. Peter also stated that the field manager Scott Torres from Uhaul was a liar and that they don't get involved with those situations which they obviously did. read more

He seemed to recognize the tough situation I found myself in (had two busted tires and needed to get a tow and drive to a tire center that same day to be at work the next day) and was willing to accommodate. He was mad busy and somehow managed to be professional, calm, and kind. Great conversation on the drive to the tire center to boot. Wow, I can't say enough good things about them. But, I will say two words: LIFE SAVER!!! Our car broke down on Highway 101 about 15 miles outside of Willits and we were at the mercy of the first tow truck driver who picked us up (via AAA), as they were only able to do an emergency safety tow where they would only take us to the local repair shop in Willits. But, we needed to get to the Hyundai dealer in Santa Rosa 96 miles away (I have the AAA plan that covers up to 100 miles, so it was covered by AAA). Enter Ken with Smith Towing. He was there at the time we were dropped off by the first tow truck driver and he stepped in and treated us like royalty! He immediately got on the phone, called AAA, and said that he would be willing to tow us to Santa Rosa, even after apparently 9 other companies passed on the AAA request. Ken even called one or two of his drivers to move the schedules around so that the tower closer to us could take us rather than having to wait an hour or an hour and a half for a different driver. So, literally within five minutes, one of his driver showed up, they put our car up on the flatbed, and the driver safely got us to Santa Rosa. I am still amazed the Ken went so far out of his way to help us as we were pretty much stranded. A true lifesaver!! read more

My husband was on an adventure motorcycle trip to Northern California, in a totally unfamiliar location where his bike would stop and refuse running on a Sunday afternoon. When I have called AAA in the past, I have had to wait 1-2 hours for help even in major metropolitan areas. A few days ago, my transmission gave out five minutes from the house. My first call was to AAA, my second to the house for a pickup so I could wait in comfort. The tow truck pulled up at the same time as my pick up. Long story short: we were a couple of stranded tourists that needed to check out of our hotel by 11 o'clock on a Saturday. My husband and I were happy to head out of the Bay Area to spend a few days on the Mendocino Coast. Our alternator went out on highway 20 about 6 miles out from Fort Bragg. It was about 8 pm on the Friday after Christmas. We got a jump to get our car to Fort Bragg, but being in a small town on a holiday weekend made it hard to find a part plus a repair shop that was open on Saturday. Smith Automotive was highly recommended by a local, so we called them up. Dawn took our call and went above and beyond anything we could've asked or hoped for. She called around and decided to send someone to Ukiah to pick up the part after she realized we'd be stuck without a car until Monday at best. Would give 10 stars if I could!. Super knowledgeable, trustworthy and won't take advantage of you. If you need a tow or car services, these are the people to call. Peter and his team are awesome! As out of towners we got stranded with our 1 year old on a crazy mountain road that an RV our size should have never been on in the middle of nowhere when the breaks on our 30 foot RV gave out. Peter came to the rescue at 10 o'clock at night and even brought a second truck to take us down the mountain and tow us 43 miles to the closest truck stop that would allow us to stay overnight. Other tow company's would tow the RV but not take us with them in the truck due to Covid. But Peter went above and beyond with his professionalism and expertise. It's not easy towing a huge RV down a mountain road with lots of twists n turns in pitch black night but he did it with ease. The next day Peter offered us advice about what he thought the issue was (break fade) and he was right which saved us alot of money since the breaks were ok in the end. They just needed to rest. We are more than grateful for them. They are genuinely good people that truly want to help people and not take advantage like some other companies. Would highly recommend them! Today I walked into Smith Automotive, the first thing I noticed was how nice the waiting area was. They have a Keurig with a nice selection of coffee and a TV.
