For the last three years I have taken my truck down and picked up 25 bags of the 45 lbs wildlife peanuts. I feed them to birds, squirrels, foxes, etc throughout the year at my mountain home. Great price and product overall. My last two times down my truck was loaded by their workers, whom I gave a $20 tip for less than 10 minutes worth of work. In both instances I was shorted bags, the first time 1 bag and the second 2 bags. I am 4 hours away with no way to prove it, so there was no point in going back, though I did call the shop after the second instance with no remedy. So ultimately, I tipped $40 to be shorted $80+. Doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth and makes me question the company's overall integrity. My trip down last year was disappointing because most of the bags were filled with dirt and branches, and overall the peanuts were just filthy. Now, I 100% understand not cleaning the peanuts, as I'm sure that many people buy the peanuts trying to use them for human consumption, but these were so bad they had to have ADDED trash to them. The issue wasn't the dirt (the animals sure don't care), but the fact that it adds to the weight meaning that I wasn't not paying for 45 lbs or peanuts, but for all the garbage in the bags as well. Again, integrity--or lack thereof. I would say that I'm never going back, but to be honest, it's still the best source for wildlife food that I've found. I'll be heading down again in the next couple of weeks. This time I'll take a trailer so that I can count every bag they put on. Peanuts peanuts and more peanuts yes I'm nuts because I love nuts so crunchy so sweet so salty so nutty so just scrumptious in all those nutty ways I will always say yes please please give me peanuts and no I'm an elephant dancing for nuts! This was a little roadside place with a shop and a warehouse that had a bunch of nuts in the middle of Virginia and they had a selection of all kinds of different combinations as well as some big bags but for us it was all about the honey roasted ones and what a treat they were as the flavors were just where it's at and definitely up there with some of the best honey roasted peanut I've ever had! This was a cool little stop and definitely don't pass them up if you like nuts then this is one of those places for you as it's just a bunch of nuts that will be just right for that long drive home! The peanut is not the same quality as the previous year. The skin is white as pale- it appears as if they were in the water for aong time . They have grey dots on the skin. It is nothibg like it is displayed on the shelves . The clerks are rude as if they were profiling for the racial. read more

Worth the 2 hour drive! The best peanut squares and peanut brittle, cheapest place for 25lb bags of raw peanuts in shell and 45 lb bags of animal peanuts for squirrels etc. Family owned, friendly and a great little town with a restaurant that was in diners drive inns and dives. read more

Wakefield is about a two hour round trip from my house. Most of our local friends know how good those peanuts are and so if any one of us are headed out that way, we take orders of the group. They are simply just the best peanuts hands down and everyone knows it. read more

Stopped by to pickup some wildlife peanuts as we saw it on line. Two people working at register never spoke. Small showroom so they had to see us. Never spoke as we left without buying anything. At least say something to your potential customers. Will take our business elsewhere. read more

I've driven by Wakefield Peanut Company several times but this was my first visit. The inside of the store is small but they have some unique items such as locally produced treats, books, Virginia souvenirs, and cookie cutters in the shape of all the states. Of course, this is Virginia--home of the peanut--and Wakefield Peanut Company, so peanuts are readily available roasted or raw. There are also tins of chocolate covered nuts, peanut brittle, and other delectable items to satisfy whatever you're craving. I picked up a tin of chocolate covered almonds. They were good but I much prefer the dark chocolate almonds available at the Planters store in downtown Suffolk. I also picked up a jar of their specialty peanut butters. You see--peanut butter is my thing. I love the PB. When I saw they had some unique natural PB flavors, I got pretty excited. There was a bourbon pecan PB, an apple PB, and the one I went with: nanahoney (banana and honey) PB. I love a good PB and banana sandwich so I decided to try it. Let's just say it didn't work for me. :( The last item I took home was a jar of pumpkin butter from the Shenandoah Valley area. We are big pumpkin fans so I knew the small jar wouldn't last long. Minutes ago I sampled a spoonful and I have to say ultimate yummm! It has a sinfully thick texture and a strong pumpkin spice flavor. I may have to hide the jar and finish it off by myself--with a spoon. A previous reviewer mentioned poor customer service. Upon entering the store today, the older and younger women said hello. They left me alone to look around the store, which I prefer. If I have a question, I know who to ask. At checkout they wrapped my glass jars so they wouldn't break. They weren't overly chatty or friendly but they were polite enough for me. It's a cute little store to stop in and visit if you get the chance. And be sure to pick up the pumpkin butter! read more

Our last stop leaving Wakefield to grab a couple things to try. Cute little store but not much of a friendly staff. The 2 young girls working the front counter are very monotone and borderline rude. Asked them a couple simple questions that neither cared to answer. One had headphones in and the other seemed very inconvenienced. Not at all what "tourists" or any other customer should have to deal with when choosing a place to spend their money. The undeserved stank face as we left was also unappreciated. My S/O and I were not at all rude or disrespectful to them but maybe they felt judgmental in our appearance as we have been diving all day at Lake Phoenix and are driving a fairly long distance back home. Very disappointed in this visit and almost changed our mind in making a purchase there. read more

The children enjoyed watching the peanut production video for about 5 minutes. All the while, the two attendants remained at the desk and left us alone. I did not notice any obsessive texting and they certainly were not while we were checking out and paying for our selections. We left with 5# bag of fresh roasted peanuts and a huge tin of shelled nuts all for about $20. This beat the prices of Virginia Diner and several other peanut stores we've stopped at over the recent years/ The store is a little on the small side but not unusually so. They do not have such a wide range of the nuts that have been treated with dozens of varieties and flavors. They stick to what they know and seem to do well. (we broke into the purchase on the drive back and were pleased by a freshness notably superior to the ones you get at a grocery). This will likely be our preferred outlet next time traversing RTE 460/ read more

Agree with Kimberley G about the unfriendly girls but OMG the chocolate covered peanuts are amazing, I think they save the smaller nuts for these and gob tons of delicious chocolate on each nut, wish I would have purchased a larger tin. read more

We live at one end Rt.460 near Lynchburg and most of our family lives in Norfolk at the other end so passing through Wakefield is a regular thing for us throughout the year. We had always stopped at the more well known peanut shop nearby until my Dad told us about Wakefield Peanut Company. The same great tasting types of "blanched" peanuts at a slightly lower cost. What is not to like?!? They also offer a lot of other "Virginia-related" products. We even found ODU (our alma mater) Tervis Tumblers here in addition to JMU and the obvious UVA & VT versions. I usually purchase several cans of peanuts for my co-workers north of the Mason-Dixon Line every Christmas as holiday gifts. We were on our way back to Lynchburg after Thanksgiving and were running late and knew we wouldn't get to the store till 5:05pm (5 mins past closing time). My wife called and told the clerk our predicament. She told the clerk what I wanted and the clerk said she would have it on the counter and waited for us which she did with a smile and a thank you. That is good ol' customer service above and beyond the call of duty. We'll be back! read more

They are just down the road from Virginia Diner, Adams Nuts, and Plantation Nuts. It was like walking into a New Mall Storefront, very cold and unpersonal. The two behind the counter said Hi but offered no assistance, even though I was the only one in the store at the time. After making my selections and standing at the counter the younger girl did not want to get off the smart phone, which is going to be the ruin of all businesses if we're not careful. She didn't move until the older lady got up then she stood up. It seemed like a chore for her to bag my purchases. Wonder where to get peanuts when driving through with so many choices? THIS IS THE PLACE! Not a reseller - this is a processor! Every kind of peanut you can think of and a few more. Fresh. Tasty. Good prices. Free samples of all. Nice video showing the whole planting, growing, harvesting process. Clerks were plenty helpful when asked questions. Bathrooms available. You know, when you go to a tiny shop every 6-8 weeks, after 2 years you think you'd get a greeting. Nope! Yes, the prices are a little lower than the other peanut shops, but I have reached my limit with the complete lack of friendliness. When I go to the counter with my bag of peanuts I'm told my total and that's the extent of conversation. On my last (and I mean that literally) visit, the older woman clerk (who has been there for every one of my visits) did not lift her head to see who entered her shop! The partially hydrogenated ingredients of their canned nut candies are unappealing and the "chocolate" coverings do not taste good. read more
