Sushi was so good that i was too immersed to remember to take a photo of it. We got the Cara Roll, Waka crunchy Roll, Osaka Roll, Western Roll, the snowcrab naruto, an order of the shrimp inari and lastly a negihama roll. I highly recommend the Cara roll, it was my favorite. It is such a unique roll that has flavors that i could have not imagined to pair together. It shocked me by how delicious it was. We honestly loved everything we got but if i had to pick from most favorite to least favorite, it would be the cara, western, snowcrab naruto, osaka, shrimp inari, negihama and then the crunchy roll. The atmosphere here felt like we were having dinner in someone's house, it was cozy. There was only one server working so expect to be patient! She was very kind, timely within reason and did her best to make our dinner experience great. Highly recommend waka house to those who like a mom and pop sushi shop experience. Fast and polite service here. Their fish is always very fresh. The only thing is a couple times with the negihama roll I've noticed the rice tasting like bamboo, as if the rolling mats they're using are a bit cheap or something. The menu does have options providing cooked fish, to raw sushi, a vegetarian sushi selection, and dessert sushi. I came here the other night to pick up to go sushi. I use to be a regular but constantly got disappointed at one point so I stopped coming. I ordered 2 Hayden. Shrimp tempura and a seared tuna roll to go and I was obsessed. They honestly need different to go boxes because it gets sloppy. But quality was great. So my friend and I came. The hostess/ service was very upfront on the kitchen being backed up and the wait being long. We asked for a few wine sample before committing and she was absolutely for it. We ended up getting a few glasses of Chardonnay. We highly recommend to not try the plum wine. We got the dumplings as an app. 3 sushi rolls to share and I got 2 to go. Food: In general the food was amazing, salmon was fresh, tempura wasn't too oily, and the Hayden Roll was amazing. There was also a grilled Salmon Roll, but we weren't able to get pictures. The grilled Salmon Roll is a great alternative if you don't like raw Salmon. Will definitely have to give this place another try for the Spicy Bomb Roll and some other rolls. Service: Our server was really attentive, as well as being courteous and professional. We couldn't really tell it was her first day. Some questions weren't answered clearly but the chef was able to fill in the blanks thay she couldn't. Besides brushing up on the menu items a bit, everything else was amazing by her. Now on to the food, this was my first time to this establishment. I have had my eye on trying this restaurant some time. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. We got gyoza, Kara aged chicken, and three rolls. The aesthetics of the food pack although to go was appealing as if plated to dine in. Never had the opportunity to eat here---first time I dropped by last week was 8:45 pm on a weekday and was told they just closed---2 workers there were nice and polite but no food for me. I then returned on Friday night right after 8:00 on and guess what, they had just closed----so once again no food for me. This is my favorite sushi in Baton Rouge! It doesn't have the glitz and glamour of, say, Tsunami's downtown. It's a small establishment in a strip that even has another sushi restaurant (s/o to Tiger Sushi's bento box special) in it. The helpings of non sushi items are large, and the sushi rolls themselves are on the large side too. Waka House is probably my favorite sushi spot in town. I'd say I've dined here over 30 times since they opened a few years ago. The sushi is always fresh and beautifully presented. The dining room is small, but beautifully designed with quirky colors and furniture. Some of my favorites are the mango shrimp tempura roll and the ruby roll. Depending on the day/time, service can be slow. I don't mind this because I'm just enjoying the place. Certainly there is an abundance of sushi places in Baton Rouge, but in the Sherwood area, Waka is tops. read more

I love that we choose and mark off what we want that way we have more time to choose and know the prices and it's a different experience then at other sushi places. I love staffs and their personality and how friendly they are! We came on a Saturday night but it was not over busy. They were quick but not rushing. We ordered different stuff- kale age chicken, dumplings, soft potato galettes, cube roll, rock and roll, and king shrimp roll. I love the King Shrimp roll, a must try! Save your money and don't order the kale age chicken or soft potato galettes. Kale age chicken reminded me of Chili's chicken tender, they have the same consistency. The galettes were 2 fried cube of mash potatoes and corn. The rock and roll was a little too flimsy and big to my liking. And cube roll was a pleasant surprise that I actually like! BONUS! They have Mochi ice cream served on a cool looking plate. The mochis has a great texture and flavors that is hard to find in surrounding sushi places. Waka House is definitely in my top three for Baton Rouge sushi spots (Sushi Yama & Sushi Masa). The space is small and can be intimate or rowdy, depending on their guests. My favorite rolls are the Hayden and Salmon Lover's, but I really haven't had a roll I didn't enjoy. The menu is extensive (some pictures are in the menu for reference) but the prices are reasonable. The fish always tastes fresh and the rolls are well-made. The service is good and you can get in and out in less than an hour for lunch. read more

As a person who is a little weary with seafood, I was so happy to see the unique vegetable rolls! The Sweet-que roll is my favorite roll I've ever had. I was a little surprised when I walked inside. The restaurant is very intimate and quiet. However, that did not stop me from dining in. The Hayden roll had so much crabmeat on top(a good thing), but nothing else. The Leo roll was pretty tasty with crab, boiled shrimp, and shrimp tempura! We made reservations for 7:30, we were running a little late, but the employees didn't mind, they kept our table reserved for us until with arrived. The atmosphere is cool and good vibes. It's a little small restaurant with about 6 tables, very intimate and a great date night spot. The lights are dim, and they have lovely classical music playing. We ordered the cold pear sake, I really really liked it. For appetizer we both had miso soup, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the best miso soup I've had in Baton Rouge. Then, we ordered 3 sushi rolls to share. We got the Picasso Roll, Snow Crab Naruto, and the Happy Valentines Roll (of course) they were all amazing and we even had some leftover to take home. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Our orders came out quickly. Food quality was very good. I tried the baked salmon appetizer. Order this!!!!!!! It was amazing. It wasn't as wet as other baked salmon that I've had and was pan sautéed which gave the bottom an amazing crispy crunch. It was delectable! I ordered the Hayden roll. It was massive! Came to Waka House many years ago on a date with my wife(girlfriend at the time). We moved to this area of Baton Rouge (Sherwood/Coursey area) and this has been a great go to place for us. I have always liked the quaint atmosphere this place has to offer (good for dates in my opinion). The setting is small so there is not going to be a huge amount of traffic while you dine. Nine to ten tables and that's it. Some people like that cozy atmosphere. The menu is fairly extensive with many lovely color pictures to help you identify what you are looking for. My wife and I are sushi enthusiasts and we do try venture out but having a decent sushi place so close to home, we can't go wrong. They try to add new things on the menu as often as they can so look for those items. The old reliables are delicious and look beautiful. The prices are pretty reasonable as well. I have seen sushi at other places that looks the same and tastes the same but more money. The staff is very kind and as helpful as they can be. That could be the only negative aspect to this place. If many orders come in or take outs the understaffed waitstaff and kitchen staff can cause a bit of a wait. Call in your order if you know you can't come in and chill out for a nice romantic dinner. Odd one this is. Honestly wish I could give it 3.5 stars but dont quite feel it's deserving of 4. Came during dinner hours, as expected by reading other reviews the location is small and you pretty much walk straight into dining room. I still cant decide how the decor sits with me, on one hand its very clean and modernized, colorful and pleasing, on the other it makes zero sense in a sushi bar. Mindful, this isn't your standard venue as there is no visibility to sushi chef as everything is prepared back of house and brought to your table. Staff were very friendly and attentive just awkward they stand outside the room and peek in time to time, then again no real logical place to do so in the dining area. The menu was very intriguing in the sense they have several ingredients you might not see, or combination of such that steps a bit outside of the box. Presentation was a high note with technique clearly showing. If any critique, the amount of toppings seems a tad excessive, felt like I wasted so much (see Hayden Roll). Fish was fresh, rolls goo however with exception of the heat from it being spicy did not have a resounding flavor and overall slightly bland. Prices are fair for the portions. To sum, Waka house is a neat place. It would be a perfect setting for a date or a more relaxing/intimate evening of any purpose. Food is good, just could use some fine tuning to get the flavors right. Again, wish I could give it 3.5 stars, it only takes dings for maybe going too outside the box. I ducked in for a quick sushi lunch while in town for business. The strip center has another sushi place practically next door but Waka had the higher star rating of the two. Dining area is a narrow room with maybe 10 or so seats. Decor alone would make some on fence diners run for the front door. There is no sushi bar or any sign of food prep in the dining area. You sit and wait for the plates to come out through a curtained kitchen door. The whole place looks more like a run of the mill Chinese restaurant thrown together in a strip center. Waitress was a nice young lady who tried to be personable on a slow day. There were only two other diners while I was eating, all of us eating solo. Wait time for food was very prompt and had no troubles with service, especially since I was one of the only people eating at the time. The sushi itself was actually good enough. I wouldn't put it on a top 5 list but it was that run of the mill nigiri and rolls that you come to expect when you head out for a sushi meal. Fish wasn't knock you off your socks fresh but everything came out tasting the way it should. I've never had sushi in baton Rouge other than this one lunch. Aesthetically, I would hope for a better surrounding when out for sushi, but if you find yourself here you should be happy with your food. read more

Seriously, I refuse to order miso soup at ANY other restaurant because Waka House is unmatched in flavor (and price!). Always flavorful with generous amounts of tofu and seaweed, served ~almost~ too hot to eat.
