Came to Wagyu Raku in Arcadia with my parents for Monday night dinner during their soft opening special, when AYCE was $19.99 per person. The promotion ended September 15. For those familiar with the area, Wagyu Raku took over the former Jazz Cat Hot Pot Cafe location.
For our broths, we tried the bone broth, satay, and spicy broth. They were decent, but overall our experience was pretty chaotic, even considering the $19.99 soft opening price.
The protein selection was limited during our visit because several options weren't available. We were able to order pork belly, beef short plate, Angus beef, and lamb. For $19.99, I wasn't expecting premium meats, so the selection itself wasn't necessarily the biggest issue.
What really didn't work for us was the AYCE concept. Instead of having vegetables and other hot pot ingredients available at a self-serve station, the servers push carts around with vegetables, fish balls, noodles, tofu, mushrooms, shrimp, and other toppings.
In theory, the cart concept sounds interesting, but in practice it takes away a lot of the autonomy that makes AYCE hot pot enjoyable. You're basically limited to whatever happens to make it to your table on the cart. If you want more vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, or a particular ingredient, you have to wait and hope the cart comes around with what you're looking for. We ended up getting only one plate of vegetables during our entire meal.
It also didn't help that the restaurant was severely understaffed. The employees were clearly trying their best and working hard, so I don't blame them. The system itself just seemed inefficient. Having an already understaffed team take care of tables while also pushing carts around with all the hot pot ingredients created unnecessary waiting.
The sauce bar was another concern. The setup was pretty messy during our visit, and with different sauces and utensils so close together, I was concerned about possible cross-contact between ingredients. Hopefully they reorganize this area as they get through the opening period.
The ambiance hasn't changed much from the previous restaurant. If you've been to Jazz Cat before, you'll probably recognize it immediately because much of the decor and overall layout still looks the same.
Parking is easy enough with a free parking lot behind the restaurant that's shared with the surrounding businesses.
Overall, Wagyu Raku is probably a one-and-done for my family and me unless they make some major changes to the concept. Even at the $19.99 soft opening price, the experience felt too restrictive and disorganized. One of the things I enjoy most about AYCE hot pot is being able to build my meal exactly how I want it, and that freedom just wasn't here.
Since this was a soft opening, hopefully they take the feedback and make some changes. Personally, I'd much rather see a self-serve ingredient bar or another system that lets customers choose what they want, when they want it, instead of being limited to whatever happens to roll by on a cart. read more
