We came into Needles from the east about lunch time, on our Southwestern road trip. Driving down old 66 through town was depressing. That poor town. Anyway, had about given up and head to one of the fast food joints, along the Interstate, when we came upon this jewel. Now I've rated it 5 star, and some may think it is because its the only real restaurant in town that is not fast food. But the ambiance inside was palpable, and it earns the 5 stars on its own. The wait staff was laughing and friendly It was cool, even though it was 111 outside (which is not real hot to the Needles locals.). We split a very good club sandwich, which came quickly and cut in half. We had the French fries as a side, but other choices are available as sides. They serve full breakfasts all day long. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal there, and it tasted good also. If you want to get a down home meal, sandwich, soup, salad, breakfast, etc., at a sit-down restaurant, this is it. Stopped in on a Sunday morning as we were driving east on a road trip. The restaurant was busy and nearly full, but we seated ourselves and menus and drinks came right away. We ordered simple items: French toast and a two-egg breakfast with hash browns and toast. Our meal came quickly and was hot and tasty. Our server, Dana, was on top of things the whole meal. The Good: parking, sitting area is clean and welcoming, great ambiance and service. Food wise; large portions, home fries, eggs, toast and iced tea ... The Bad: overall lacking in flavor, it seems anything fried or was cooked on a flattop - specifically chicken fried steak and hash browns - tasted "old" as if the oil or clarified butter had been sitting around for days or cooking surface was not clean - really uneatable. Being local to this place, I really wanted it to be close to great, very disappointed but I and my girlfriend will give it one more chance. read more

In new places, I normally stick with what I know (chicken fingers and fries) but I decided to try something new. I ordered the Santa Fe Skillet. The meat was tender. There was a perfect balance between potatoes and meat. The flavors of the dish blend beautifully, but how it is prepared is essential. This was on point. My husband ordered eggs, bacon, and crispy hash browns. Again, perfect. The waitress was busy, but she was very friendly, helping me find my husband after my pit stop and service at the table was quick and efficient. We went to this little place because my husband use to come here a lot as a kid with his parents. He hadn't been in about 20 years and wanted to take the kids. We ordered potato skins, chili, chicken fried steak, a loaded mashed potato, green beans, a cheese burger, fries, and pancakes. We LOVED everything except the potato skins. The service was fantastic. The servers were all absolutely delightful. Very small town homey feel. The atmosphere was country southern western style. Really cool and authentic to the establishment and the area. Was looking for a spot to get a quick bit and found this gem on Yelp! Upon entering there is a little gift shop with some neat items. We ordered the 16 oz sirloin, cowboy skillet, kid's fish sticks and loaded tots. Sirloin is hand carved and cooked perfectly. Nothing fancy just salt, pepper, grilled but good. I ordered the cowboy skillet, the server said everyone loves their pot roast but I was afraid a whole plate might be too much. It was just perfect! It was like an egg scramble with pot roast, bell peppers, onions on top of county potatoes.... yum! We ordered fish sticks for our son, it was almost a fillet, and it was fried crispy yet moist. I was surprised it did come out with tartar sauce. The chunky applesauce was really good. The only thi g about this meal that wasntmy favorite were the loaded tots. They we 8.99 or something and came out very crispy, barely cheesy with bacon over the top. We asked for the sour cream on the side. I think it should of been cheesier, it would have countered the extra crispy tots better. Service was excellent! Our bill was about $60. read more

We drove in to Needles from Pasadena on our way to Taos, NM. When we stopped for gas, the station attendant suggested we try "The Wagon Wheel Restaurant." From the moment we entered, the aroma of delicious food lingered on the air in the most inviting manner. One of my favourite foods on earth happens to be meatloaf, so I ordered the grilled meatloaf sandwich . It was far and beyond my expectations. My sweetheart was quite pleased with the jalapeño burger. Neither of us were disappointed. The only drawback was our waitress Jennifer. She asked what I wanted to drink, so I asked if there was a menu. She seemed dumbfounded that I'd want to see a menu before ordering a drink. Her grumpy reply was, "Well I'll have to go get you one". The menus were approximately 3 feet away. She was constantly calling out as she passed by, "How're you guys doin'" or coming up to the table and interrupting our conversation. I asked for a second container of ranch dressing for our two orders of French fries and she couldn't just go and get it, she had to interject, "I thought you guys were going to share" . A waiter finally brought it. She needs to stop referring to people as "you guys" it turns a wonderful restaurant experience into the caliber of a "greasy spoon" which this restaurant does not deserve. If you ask her to stop, you'll get an argument! My advice is to sit in someone else's station. I would have given 5 stars had it not been for Jennifer! read more

Literally wandered into this place one day without a clue as to what we'd stumbled into....It was literally like taking a step back into the past. The outer walls covered with Route 66 memorabilia should serve as a warning as to what you'll find inside. The inside is filled with "eye candy" from the past and everywhere you look there's something worth seeing. Once you tear yourself away from the decor, the menu is equally astonishing with breakfast covering two pages, lunch on another and dinner filling up the rest. There's an amazing variety of comfort food and the savvy waitress let us take our time with a few well-placed suggestions. The pot roast is hands-down amazing and my open-faced sandwich brought back happy memories of road trips from my childhood. While my husband's meatloaf brought a smile to his face, he couldn't resist stealing a few bites off my plate. (I think he was sorry he didn't get the pot roast too!) The Wagon Wheel Restaurant is more than stepping back into a warmer/friendlier time in America's history. It's also about going back to real home-cooked food when it wasn't all about cheap/quick/easy. The generous portions and fair prices will definitely bring us back in the future, but the final draw came from our waitress who clued us in that the desserts here are to "die for". Stopped here because of the good yelp reviews. It was a little dirty, looked like they never dusted. The booths were very tight, if your not skinny it's really tight and not many tables. We ordered the Pot Roast Skillet, I wish I would have gotten the dinner. The roast was good and tender on top of mashed potatoes with mushrooms, onions and gravy. Like I said it was good, but too much of the same thing for me, I need at least a vegetable or salad to mix it up a little. I might try it again but not sure. read more

Wagon Wheel Restaurant is located on the west side of the city of Needles, along Business 40, now named West Broadway, but at one time was Route 66, probably the most notable and famous highways for American diner cuisine. My visit to this wonderful restaurant happened last year, and I'm just now getting around to posting it on Yelp. As you enter the restaurant, the first thing that catches your eye is the well-equipped gift shot to your left, that also, quite conveniently is the cashier's station, which makes it a two-for-one experience. If you like Route 66 memorabilia, you'll love the gift shot, as it features a huge selection of Route 66 stuff, such as tee shirts, curios, photos, local history books, Route 66 books, coffee cups, and just about anything related to the legendary Route 66. Now you've arrived... the dining room is paneled with cedar, decorated with Route 66 photos and memorabilia, and is pure 1960's retro. The only 2018's upgrade that I could see was a Hi-def flat screen television monitor tuned to CNN for the pleasure of the truckers who don't have satellite reception or Internet connections, but outside of that, it was pure 1960's gold, complete to the order wheel for the kitchen, the waitresses taking orders on a pre-printed notepad, the laminated countertops and everything else. I ordered Cajun sausage, home style potatoes, eggs, along with biscuits and gravy. My breakfast was delicious, and typical of what you'd expect in a Route 66 diner... and by that I mean the supreme compliment, as the breakfast that I enjoyed at Wagon Wheel Restaurant was a pure slice of Americana, and a wonderful example of diner cuisine. The first thing that I judge a restaurant by is the eggs - you can't believe how "easy" it is to mess-up an order of eggs over easy. Not the case at Wagon Wheel Restaurant, as my eggs over easy arrived as ordered, over easy, not hard, and not broken. The home style fried potatoes were fried crispy golden on the outside, and chewy on the inside, and we accompanied with lots of diced bell pepper slices and white onions, as ordered. The menu advertised the Cajun sausage as spicy, but to me, it was on the mild side: If you'd want to rate it on the "hot" pepper scale, I'd rate it at about the "heat index" of Anaheim pepper... with a little kick, but not much more... but grilled perfectly, juicy, but not at all greasy. The biscuit and bowl of gravy arrived on a separate plate. I basically cut the biscuit into slices and dipped it into the gravy, and when I'd eaten all of the biscuit, I poured the extra gravy onto my potatoes. Breakfast heaven! I rate this fine retro diner a solid four stars, as you get priceless Route 66-era diner atmosphere, great food, friendly, superior service, gigantic portions, at a fair price. Wagon Wheel Restaurant was everything that I was looking for in a breakfast restaurant and more... you can't go wrong dining where the Needles locals dine, at Wagon Wheel Restaurant. read more

Based on other reviews you either really like the chicken fried steak or you don't. Put me firmly in the don't camp. Our journey on Route 66 led us here to this old timey cowboy restaurant. It's very cool, decor wise. Menu is extensive and the food seems solid. We came to have a burrito I think because my husband and I are vegetarians. Everyone around was were locals and were eating plates of meat and fries. It was hilarious! I give this place five stars based on what it is, a Route 66 diner. Our experience was great. We were seated immediately and water was brought out quickly. Our server, Bruke, was very attentive, cheerful and helpful. We ordered kids chicken tenders, French toast, huevos rancheros, eggs & bacon and a biscuit. Everyone liked their meals a lot. We had low expectations from a roadside diner, so were pleasantly surprised with the food. We've never eaten anywhere in the area before so I have nothing to compare it to, but would highly recommend this place if you need to stop. The only bad thing was the stench of urine coming from the men's room. The bathrooms in general aren't great. Could use a good spray down with bleach! read more
