    Waffle Single

While I haven't dined in at this location, I did order for delivery for a late lunch/early dinner. It was packaged well but almost everything was slightly undercooked (eggs, hashbrowns, and toast), but it still tasted fine. The waffle was perfect though! I don't know why but the little Waffle House logo in the waffle was so cute and funny to me. I love the option for add-ons to the hashbrowns and got jalapeños.

I'd been wanting to visit a Waffle House for quite some time, but I kept getting distracted or finding myself drive by one at the wrong time. After a doctor's appointment today, I decided to stop at this Waffle House on South Emerson on the fringes of Beech Grove. First off, you're probably looking at my 4-star rating and thinking to yourself "Are you freaking insane? We depend on your reviews Richard." Hear me out. Waffle House is, well, Waffle House. It's a 24-hour mostly breakfast joint with a very light non-breakfast menu. As a chain, Waffle House is famous for staying open in all kinds of weather. This actually amazes me because as I drove up to the building today I couldn't help but think that any of the three pigs could huff and puff and blow the Waffle House down without getting much of a workout. Through a critical lens, I could easily justify a 3-star rating. I wouldn't go any lower because, quite honestly, I got exactly what I expected. However, I have my reasons for upping the rating and I'm quite serious about feeling justified in going with the 4-star. In case you're unaware, Waffle House maintains an incredibly basic menu heavy on breakfast items and completely devoid of razzle-dazzle. They have a handful of sandwiches, though the lunch/dinner menu is fairly paltry. While I am known to eat breakfast at any hour, I was actually in the mood for dinner and opted for a simple burger with hash browns (you won't find fries on the menu). I ordered my usual unsweetened iced tea. My meal came in at $10.50 before tip. So, here we go... As I drove up, I noticed they had two ADA parking spots along with a nice curb cut. The diner itself looked divey, of course, but you could tell they'd put some effort into accessibility. They have a double, one-sided door entry. Both doors are glass. I found the first one a little challenging, but this was still workable. As I entered during the late afternoon, I was warmly greeted and told I could sit anywhere. I knew that Waffle House tends to have the sort of vintage bar dining experience with some side tables. However, I was deeply impressed that around 3-4 of their bar seats are at a height that make them wheelchair friendly. I completely didn't expect that and loved it. So, reason #1 for the bump in rating? The accessibility was much stronger than I expected. Secondly, my server. I completely failed to get her name, but she was sweet and charming and attentive without being intrusive. I got my always desired iced tea refill. She didn't have the "honey" and "sweetie" thing going on that seems to always come with this type of restaurant, but she was an oasis of kindness. As someone who'd just left a rather painful doctor's appointment, that kindness was very appreciated. The other employees were also friendly and they all seemed to have a good chemistry together. So, yeah, reason #2 for the bump in rating - the service was simply excellent and exactly what I needed. For a $10+ meal, it was vastly superior to anything I'd have expected. The food? It was perfectly fine but exactly what you'd expect. It was a simple, affordable meal without an ounce of razzle-dazzle to it. The angus burger was just fine and at $5.25 it's hard to complain. The hash browns were an unusual side item, but I enjoyed them. I would easily order this meal again, though I'd also probably try breakfast during a future visit. The iced tea was also perfectly fine. The restaurant is definitely a bit divey, though they were consistently cleaning and it wasn't what I'd call dirty. They also had an electronic jukebox that I noticed. Waffle House continues to have a notice about staffing concerns and supply concerns. They continue to note they may need to limit seating or even close, but at the time I visited I was the only customer for a few minutes. There were some that came in while I was there. They also appear to give military, fire, and police discounts and I was asked about this up front (I will admit I found this a bit hilarious. If they'd asked me if I qualified for a senior discount, I might have understood!). Overall, this was a good experience. Yes, Waffle House is divey. Yes, Waffle House is plain and simple. Yes, there's a casual aura to the entire experience that makes you think you've stumbled into Mel's Diner from the old "Alice" television show. But, the food is affordable, decent-to-good, the restaurant is accessible, and the employees are friendly to the point that I left thinking to myself "I want to go back." That's a win. So, 4-stars it is.

    Pecan Waffle

This place exceeded my expectations so much so that I'm leaving my first Yelp review. There were signs on the front door advising us of longer wait times due to staff shortages, but this was not an issue because my partner and I only waited 10 minutes max for a booth. The booth was clean and wiped down, and we were greeted by a very friendly waitress (I think her name was Leana) who immediately took our drink orders. Coffee arrived hot and water came icy cold seconds after ordering. She then took our food orders, and minutes later we were eating. Food came hot, and everything tasted great! The only thing to mention is that the waffle was a bit pale, but the waitress had explained it was due to their new waffle maker. We split the pecan waffle, and it was fine! A bit soft for my liking, but it was fully cooked and fresh.

    Breakfast!

So... there was a wait. Which is typically a good thing, right? And they weren't horrible. They were actually pretty decent. But the turnover is so quick we were left with a damp table to sit at with a dirty napkin stuffed into the condiment tray but again, quick turnover. My husband was also served his coffee within a dirty coffee mug. Cleanliness is HUGE with me. Especially if we're talking about a place where I'm gonna be putting food into my mouth. But we stayed cuz I REALLY wanted to try their waffles. This place is called WAFFLE House after all. Well. The waffles were disappointing. AND they don't have whipped cream for them. Boo. BUT the rest of the food was a more than a little better than just okay. Would I eat here if I were local? Probably not... but not cuz they're terrible. The service was nice. And there is a lot.

Pre-dawn steak & eggs with HG & "casa de waffle" sauce

Very, very early morning breakfast when the roads are quiet and people are still sleeping... this place is a classic truck stop eatery. It was very bright and well lit (wake up those bound for the road), and clean. Menu featured plenty of huge food... not just waffles but lots of hash brown bowls. I went for the steak and eggs, medium rare, with eggs over easy (the waitress got exactly what I wanted. "Yolk still runny, whites cooked through?" Bless you, you friendly, intelligent soul) Eggs were perfect. Hash browns were crisp. Steak was cooked perfectly medium rare... but that was one MEAN cow. It fought me the whole way down, and I was inadequately armed with a dull steak knife. Coffee was meh, but was hot and fresh and plentiful. HG's hash brown bowl was huge and covered in all kinds of crazy -- cheese, veggies, gravy even. (He skipped the chili.) Waitress was awesome, and service was fast. Would I seek this place out specifically? Nope. It's not really my scene. But if you're on the road early, with a stomach threatening to devour your backbone, come fill up, wake up, and hit the road prepared. Just avoid the steak. MOOOOOOO!

Man...Amazing!! I seen this movie called ATL when I was younger and saw this restaurant in the movie. Never knew this restaurant was real lol, so I tried it. Amazing! Definitely an old school type of vibe restaurant but man...the best grits and cheese I've ever had, waffles amazing. Good stuff man, plus the staff were cool at this location.

It's hard to see it but the sign in the window says to go orders only between 9 PM and 6 AM
    Susie M.

Not sure why or what it is but I thought it was a good idea to stop here again for a quick bite and once again I'm left feeling like crap. Food just didn't and hasn't taste good and my belly ends up yucky. I think this was my last try

First and foremost the medium is no joke HOT. Anyone can make something hot. But the flavor of the hotness is world class. Whatever they do, (brine whatever) the flavor is deep in the meat, including the breast. Absolutely fantastic. My only advice is if you find a raw jalapeno to hot, go one level down in spice. Unless you can set an eat raw Serranos, don't pay .$50 to go spicier. Who would have thought, amazing hot chicken, Indy.

It honestly hurt to see all that chicken go directly into the garbage, but they claim it was inedible. Since it's not a saucy type of flavoring, but a dry rub, they said that the heat was painful, and not flavorful. Back to the sandwich I enjoyed... I felt that there was a sweetness to the flavor that I liked, which I could see not everyone enjoying. There is also a hot dusting over the french fries which exacerbates any discomfort people are having from the heat. There really wasn't anything to cool it down. The macaroni and cheese was piping hot, although not spicy.

Others may not care, but I think it is unique and a pretty cool atmosphere. I was meeting my wife and I arrived first. The hostess promptly took me to a table in the upstairs corner. Sadly, when my wife arrived about a minute later, they left her to fend for herself to find me. All good. Our server, Conner, promptly came to the table and took our orders as well as checked in on us throughout the meal. Only negative was that he brought our check toward the end of the meal when my wife was interested in ordering a dessert. He did ask we wanted anything else after I signed the receipt, but the moment had kind of passed at that point. They pride themselves on their wide variety of beverage options. Their menu is extensive, although it lacks actual pricing in it. I selected a Founders Hazelnut Stout (12.75). It was unique and I enjoyed it, just not sure it was worth the cost. My wife chose a cider (8.75), but sadly all of their cider options were sweet and she prefers dry, so it wasn't her favorite. I ordered a Hot Brown (12.99) just for something different, but exchanged what would have been bagged chips for their in-house made chips (2.99). Hot Brown was a large portion, although a little one note in flavor, which may very well be the nature of the dish. My wife ordered the Mahi Tacos (14.49), which were 3 decently sized tacos with good flavor. Not sure my wife is as enthused by the place as I am, but it's a nice local joint with character that serves decent food at a reasonable price.
