So...this being Belgium, and specifically Brussels, waffles are kind of a thing. This location in particular is notable in being the waffle place that tour guides will specifically mark down or point out. Pretty sure there are a few deals worked out there.
Some things I wasn't sure of at first as an American... Speculoos (one of the toppings) is a cookie butter/spread based on a spiced shortbread cookie from the Netherlands. Sirop de Liège, or liege syrup, is Belgian jam spread. If you've never had it before, they're pretty nice and will give you a sample to see if you want it on your waffle. Additionally, unlike most other places that focus more on selling dessert waffles, Waffle Factory also has a lot of savory waffles. Their unique product is the waffines, which is like a waffle dorayaki. Think: handheld waffle with a layer of filling. Liege waffles is what we call Belgian waffles, and Brussels waffles are thinner, crispier waffles (and the best, fight me).
Now onto Waffle Factory details specifically. It's a restaurant franchise that stood out in having a unique liege waffles (aka. Belgian waffles) recipe with a lower fat content and more emphasis on savory breakfast waffles with a sourdough batter in the form of their signature waffines. Additionally, they advertise the freshness of their products, with waffles made on order and advertise that each location has its own doughmaker. Speaking of which, while this franchise was founded in Belgium, you'll find that most of its most popular in France. Which I mean there are 4 locations in Belgium and over 30 locations in France with a HUGE concentration in Paris as well as one place in Qatar.
THIS particular location was a two-minute walk from the Grand Place de Bruxelles (the Grand Place central square), one minute from the Manneken Pis (the famous pissing boy fountain/statue), and 5 minutes from Galerie De La Reine/Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert (the shopping arcades). But I think, most importantly, it's just conveniently close to Choco Story Brussels, the chocolate museum (Belgium chocolate, after all X3). And while the bottom story is mainly the order and pick up counter and some counter seating, it does have a nice dining area upstairs. In terms of menus, they are fully prepared to serve customers and tourists at all hours for all meals, with ice cream, coffee, frozen drinks, and milkshakes in addition to all their waffle options.
Overall, this place is very a very convenient distance from a lot of the major tourist locations and I thought their waffles were pretty good. If we ever come back, I definitely want to try some of their savory specials, and I think I saw that they had a seasonal duck sandwich special. At the time, when we circled to Waffle Factory, we were all already full but I wanted more Brussel waffles while I could. Ended up just getting one with salted caramel sauce, one of the simpler options, and it was AMAZING. I am fully on Team Brussels Waffles. read more
