My mom and I have been coming here for over 10 years. This is the only place to get the most delicious Chinese/Taiwanese beef/pork jerky. There are so many different flavors and a variety of savory and sweet snacks and candies. The pricing is a bit confusing. Instead of saying the weight, just say how much you want to spend on each item. So if the item is $35 per pound, just say you want to purchase $15 worth. The staff that work there are all very kind. This is a rare to find store in a modern city . It sells snacks of many kind . They are Chinese snacks of the old world . There are beef and pork jerky of different flavors. Also , it sells different types of dried fruits like apricot, plums . Some are sweet and some are salty . Some are for snacks only and some have medical benefits like sore throat and cough . We don't see this type of store in Bay Area . Last time I visited Honolulu I found a few stores inside Asian market place. The beef jerky are my favorites and I love some of the preserved fruits .They are sold by weight . There are so many big glass containers inside . Probably have over 100 types of snacks . This store is located in Milpitas. the same mall with a Ranch 99 . It is east to find parking on a Monday to Friday. But it is almost impossible to find a spot to park on the weekend afternoon . I was uncomfortable with how pricing was handled. Since everything is sold by weight, customers should be able to clearly see the weight and total price before being charged. The lady here is super friendly and helpful. Upon entering she offered us some hot tea. She let us sample all of the treats we wanted to try. Ended up getting a pound of dried plum, flower, fish, and spicy squid. She also added a few pieces of candy for free and two ice green teas. This place is an enormous ripoff, but the only place I have found in the Bay Area to get pork jerky (even if it is nowhere near as good as the pork jerky in Taiwan. Whenever do reluctantly go there, I ask for half pound, but they always give me closer to .75, clearly to make me spend more. Every time I come to this store the lady is so pushy and gets unhappy if I just want to get a small amount. There's a $20 min for credit card so I always end up overshooting and getting nearly $30 worth of stuff when I came in just for a bit of beef jerky. The original flavor beef jerkey is kind of tough. Half a pound of beef jerkey, half pound of drive olives, and half pound of black sesame candies and the total was $27...expensive. Great selection of dried vegetables, jerky, and plums, prunes, pickled mangoes, pickled and spiced prunes and olives and so much more! This is our go-to place for getting the dried, salty, spicy, pickled plums/prunes. My grandpa used to love eating these types of snacks and he passed it down to us! We buy a quarter to a third lb bag of some of their selections. I agree with other reviewers, they are expensive and overly-priced. Perhaps due to the fact that it's imported. The staff are not too friendly but if you catch them on a good day, they will lighten up They will also walk around and let you taste some and cut you samples of ones you want to try. There are very few this kind of snacks shops in the area, so I go here once a while. But their customer services are really terrible. They always try to sneak in as many as possible without permission, as they charge snacks by weight and make more money by sneaking in more. Not my type of candy store, but I got attracted by the colors and my colleague and I entered there just to see what do they have. Contrary to other people experiences, for us the treatment was super nice. We were offered tea promptly and with smiles and all our questions about sugar level of various items were answered, as well as we got multiple samples of various fruit candy. I was super impressed with the olives candified. I had never seen that in my life, and you know I come from the olive culture, so I could not miss that. I got a bunch of different olive types and brought as gifts to several parties (2 to 3 of those are already too intense). When I asked to sample some of them, the lady who helped me gave me such a sour face. I could see her face in the mirror. She then forced me to purchase more than I wanted. Holy high pressure sales, Batman! The moment you step in here, employees are all over you like Leisure Suit Larry's cheap polyester suit. Vua Kho Bo lures you in by offering free drink samplers outside, and once you have fallen for this trap, game over! It is crying a shame because if you look past the vultures hovering over you like a gazelle in the Serengeti, it is quite a charming little shop with decent products. The set up is similar to something like the Sweet Factory at the mall, with rows of clear containers filled with a myriad of (mostly dried) items. The dried fruits, candies, drinks, and various types of meat jerkies are actually quite delectable. The problem lies in the fact that you don't really get to check out exactly what is offered with the salesperson right on your tail. I'm sure the workers here like to run a tight ship, and don't want patrons picking and prodding everything like the Brach's stand at Safeway, but there is a big difference between keeping a close eye on the customers, providing assistance as needed, and just outright hounding them. Ironically, they would probably do a much higher volume of sales if they simply allowed everyone to walk freely about, sampling items at their own leisure. I am also rather confused by the name of the place. "Vua Kho Bo" is clearly Vietnamese, but all of the staff speaks Mandarin, and there really isn't anything remotely Vietnamesey about the shop. As a matter of fact, the sales tactics remind me a lot of the street vendors in China peddling their wares to any unsuspecting lad who happens to stroll on by. To be perfectly honest, I actually have never purchased anything from Vua Kho Bo, but have tried enough of their items to know that had I not been completely turned off by their questionable sales tactics, I would have walked out with a bag or two on more than one occasion. As it stands, I doubt I'll ever feel compelled to spend a dime here until they learn how not to violate the two-foot radius "comfort zone." I've been here twice and purchased some dried plums. Here's what I asked for versus what they gave me. Asked for .5 lb. and they gave me .92 lbs. Asked for 1 lb. and they gave me 1.73 lbs. I didn't want to be rude and ask them to pull out the extras but this is not ethical. Visited the Cupertino location and they did the same thing. If it wasn't for my family, I wouldn't bother buying them. I have to say, there's one location on Story Road inside the Grand Century Mall. They are more honest. I asked for 1 lb. and they actually weigh it before sealing the bag vs. sealing the bag and then weighing. So if anyone wants to purchase these snacks, ask for half of what you want to purchase and you will get close to what you really want. read more

Reviewing this place can go two ways. Since most everyone rated this place on its pushy service, I'm going to rate it on the products they sell. Whenever I'm in town, I make it to Vua Kho Bo for certain items that I know I like. For example: the dried white grapefruit and the spicy jerky. Sometimes I get tea, sometimes other dried fruits. But the key is to go in, head down, and when they start shoving stuff at you, turn them down and they'll leave you alone. The only time I sample is if I know it's something I want to buy (like if the spicy jerky looks a little different than the last time, I'll try a piece to make sure it's the right stuff.) Since they scoop and fill for you, they tend to over fill bags and then act like they don't understand when you tell them it's too much. Don't bother fighting that fight. If you want one pound, tell them half pound. If you want half pound, tell them quarter pound. Seriously. The product is worth the hassle. Just best to get in and out as quickly as possible and nobody's feelings get hurt. read more

I have been a fan of the location in Southern California (well one of the ones in Westminster) for awhile and usually spend quite a bit since I didn't know when I was able to visit down there again. Since this location opened, they offer pretty much the same items and I feel semi-relieved that I don't have to travel so far to get good jerky. The only thing about this place is that the staff overly pressure you as they are extremely generous at giving you different samples as well as overload the bag even if you ask for a little bit. You need to be able to tolerate that kind of business practice, but if you can... the items they have are very good and certainly tasty. Don't let the sales people pressure you down. TIP: don't walk into the store unless you are really planning to buy something or are able to accept free samples and are able to leave without buying anything guilt-free. read more

They have bins of snacks, but they're not self serve. The person getting it for you tries to pack your bag since they charge by weight. Even if you say you only want a small amount , they try to stuff it to charge you more. It's a $10 credit card minimum. I was a bit shy of that and asked them to add a small amount to the bag, and the woman used the tongs to get out as much as she possibly could to increase the weight of my bag. I told her I didn't want that much and she just ignored me. I made it obvious to the owner / manager and the woman who filled the bag, but they clearly didn't care. Great beef jerky joint with friendly, but questionable sales people. A friendly lady offered me some tea-like beverage upon entering the store. The lady quickly offered me a sample of their beef jerky. As I initially politely declined her offer, she reassured me that it was great tasting and that I should at least try some...so I did...and then she offered me another sample so I felt guilty and agreed to buy 1/4 lb. Another employee quickly scooped a big chunk of beef jerky. I quickly reminded the employee that I only wanted 1/4 lb and the employee told me that it was "very light" and even let me hold the bag to *prove* it. When it came time to have my purchase rung up, the weight of my bag of beef jerky was 1/2 lb...2x more than my request for 1/4 lb. A little shady so I took out my credit card to pay and I was quickly informed that the credit card minimum is $10 and that I needed to purchase an additional item such as a lollipop or candy... wtf?!? I was about to give them cash and mumbled that this sounded like a very shady transaction when the employee heard me and told me that it wasn't shady at all and that he could readjust the contents of my beef jerky, which I gladly agreed. ...all in all...great beef jerky...but the sales pressure and sales tactics reminded me of shopping overseas in HK! read more

I got my cousin to buy me some stuff from here and send it to me since I am in Florida. I am very disappointed! I found a cigarette butt in one of the bags of dried prunes. At first I didn't know what it was but I knew it definitely wasn't a dried prune so I pulled apart one of the ends and sure enough it was a cigarette butt. They have a large selection of jerky and dried foods, however, I think it's kind of over-priced. I spent about $34 for just one pound of beef jerky. The taste is good though so I decided to take the plunge and buy it. They were pretty accurate in getting the amount I requested. The staff was helpful, although there was a bit of a language barrier. At check-out, the lady handed me a sample of their dietary green tea in a water bottle. I politely took it but threw it away when I left because I had no clue what was in it and the label was written in a different language. Oh yeah this place is totally Chinese and Taiwanese with a Vietnamese sounding name. Bo = beef, that little I know. It's called Vua Kho Bo on the business card. But isn't Bo Kho Vietnamese stewed beef brisket egg noodles with carrot and tomato based beef broth? Kind of like Taiwanese style tomato beef noodle soup? Dat not available here, doh. Probably has something to do with beef jerky because their business card states they are "old known named brand" and king of beef jerky in Chinese. Dunno about you, but old known brand name usually means 50 years or more in HK, probably closer to 80 to 100 in Taiwan. Many of you have probably not visited at all or have not been back to the old world in a while, so you are not used to strongarm sales tactics when browsing a shop (whether it be a strip mall store, night market area shop, upscale department store, or regular shopping mall shop etc) whose mindset is like that of the old world. The moment you walk in, the saleswoman wrestles you to the ground TSA and WWF style as if you are carrying explo$ive material in your undies, and proceed to perform a full body cavity search in case you are also carrying powdery substances for inhalation, and who knows, maybe you have some T-bill$ in your pockets too. Or it's because you just look like an uber rich A$N even if you are just an average A$N American Yelper who speaka no Chinesey and happen to have waltzed inside innocently thinking you might find kobe pork sliders, beef noodle shoop, ramen, or pho in here. Or so this is what most Yelpers think how they are being treated. Trust me, it's all cultural. To me I'm used to it. Too bad most people who would go to this place probably won't think to check Yelp reviews first. I'm glad I finally found this listing so that I could write a review. I left so confused and so annoyed after spending $65 on 3 items that I asked for "half a pound" on each. I ended up with 1 pound of each. Didn't feel like arguing with them, just know that I would never go back. Pushy staff that doesn't know when to STFU and get out of your face - I will warn all of my friends and family away from this place. Like Fenny said, "I know everyone needs to make a living but..." this is not an honest living. Sure, their pork jerky and dried fish were pretty good. The product itself is no joke. But you will find yourself annoyed to death by the sales there - I got surrounded by 3 people who kept cutting samples off and shoving them into my face when I declined the sample, insisting "it's really good, it's a new product we just got in..." etc etc. And again, I can NOT stress enough that they are completely dishonest about how much they put into the bag, always sneaking in more when you aren't looking. Waltz'd over to this place after having lunch at Pepper Lunch to sample the tea offerings displayed at the front of the store... Just as I was sipping, two ladies rushed over to the tea barrel (where they kept the bulk of the tea cubes) and opened a bag ready to make a sale. I inquired how the tea cubes were sold by with a quick response of $16/ lb. I wasn't planning on spending $16 on tea so I agreed to 1/2 a pound since it was tasty. As I motioned over to grab a bag so that I could self serve my own purchase, one of the fobby sales ladies cut me off and started to fill up a bag that she had already had in her hands with the tea cubes before I could even do it myself. Her hands were so quick as she began tossing tea cubes one by one into the bag; immediately weighing the product and then sealing it. Same sales tactics with the dried mushrooms too. Damn lady kept tossing more and more mushrooms into the bag telling me "mushroom weigh very light-mushroom not much heavy" even after I re-iterated that I only wished for half a pound. I ended up with the damn bag nearly 3/4 of the way full & my tea weighing in at 1.6 pounds when I initially only asked for 1/2 a pound. I walked away from this store $34 poorer. The dried goods and teas here are of great quality and are dee-lish but that does not justify the need for their pushy sales antics. It's NOT the $34 that I am bitter about either, I just felt like I had zero control over my purchase. Customers like myself are the ones that are paying... Not them. Let the product speak for itself. They should allow the customer(s) to make their own selection and give us the leeway to control our own quantity for purchase. Then they kept offering more and more, to the point where we just couldn't refuse politely and now felt pressured to buy something. So we chose to go with the cheapest item we could find... but apparently it was TOO cheap because the lady forced us to get more. And then, of course, since we didn't have cash, we had to use card... and there's a ten dollar minimum (which, btw, I think is actually illegal, although a lot of shops use it... but that's besides the point). Let me preface this review by saying this: if you've never lived in Asia or have never experienced the pushy salespeople in Asia, then this place will drive you nuts. I have enough business savvy to know when I'm being conned to spend money. SO, I KNEW they were trying to make me spend spend spend.. but I just tasted away and only bought what I wanted to. YES, as a previous yelper said.. THEY FILL THE BAG THEMSELVES!! Another thing they do is after they weigh what you bought, a second person IMMEDIATELY seals the bag so you can't change your mind and it's a "sealed deal". I still really enjoyed my experience here. Yes, I came in looking to spend around $10 and left short $30 total. But, I kept on telling the lady to empty my bag and I only wanted a little bit of this and that. At one point, she let me fill the bag myself. YOU HAVE TO BE ASSERTIVE. She also tried to sell me 20 tea bags for $18 but after giving her a hard time (I initially went in for green tea) she showed me a box of 100 bags for $9.99 :) The most expensive purchase I made was dried/fried mushrooms at $26/lb. Ended up costing me around $10 for a few handfuls of mushrooms. More expensive than fresh farmers market mushrooms!! Ok, so I was slightly conned, still.. I don't consider myself ripped off. I might even go back! But, I'll be extra assertive and abide by these tips: TIPS - Go in with cash only (and only the amount you're willing to spend) - FILL THE BAGS YOURSELF, don't let the woman do it for you - After it's weighed, DON'T let anyone seal the bag. If you can ever get killed with kindness this is the place. I come in here exploring and saw the chinese beef jerky my dad and I love. I ask for a sample and I get offered a sample for 5-6 different things. I asked for a half pound, but they gave me a little over a pound. When I was paying they gave me a tea and I told them it was ok for the half pound. So after going to yelp everything seems to make sense. I think everything is pretty accurate. read more

I concur with what all the other reviewers have said. The second you step foot in the door, the salespeople are all over you like cats on meat. They ply you full of samples, sneak more goods into the bags than you request (they bag it for you), and make you feel cheap and guilty for not purchasing what you sample. Their sales tactics are extremely aggressive. A 1/4 pound of dried mushrooms, a 1/2 pound of dried okra, and 1 pound of tea made me $50 poorer. They did give me a free chilled bottle of green tea. The person ahead of me got 2 bottles, but they bought $300 worth of dried goods. The products themselves are pretty tasty though. read more

Like all previous reviews said, this place is SUPER pushy when it comes to trying to sell you stuff. Not only are they super pushy, but it almost comes to the point of being downright rude when you clearly state what you want & that's all that you want, & they just try to continue & push everything & anything on you. Yeah sure you can sample whatever & all you want, but they make up for it by scooping/grabbing a lot more than what you ask for. You ask for 1/2 lb, they'll give you 3/4 to a 1lb, you ask for a 1lb, they give you 1.5lb. Very shady if you ask me, but I guess they stay in business because they offer things that you can't easily get anywhere else. I've been to a few others in the Westminster area & they were nowhere nearly as pushy as this one. They did give me this bottle of iced tea after my purchase (because they shoved a bunch extra in there) that honestly looked a bit shady, as if they just took old bottles of water from Costco, shoved a bag of tea in there, & then slapped their own label on there as "Dietary Green Tea," which for all I know, could be dietary because it'll give you the sh*ts. read more

I was told by my aunty to come here to buy pork jerky. I forgot what she said about the ladies here. I thought she said "grouchy", but half way through my experience, I realized that she really said "PUSHY". And pushy they are!!!!! At first they seem really nice, letting you sample anything and everything you want. Whatever you facial expression says you like, they try to push the sale on you. "You like? Very good, yah? How much you like?" and places a bag on top the container/jar. Then, off to the next sample and same thing. Little do you know, that there is another lady walking directly behind you, and filling the bag with goodies you just tasted with double of what you asked for. If you ask me, that's pretty shady. When it came time to pay, they are weighing all the bags I got, and sealing it up so quickly. I caught them, and when I asked for 1/2 POUND, they filled 1/2 a BAG! Which was more than ONE POUND! I told them it's too much, put it back. But then they said since I am buying so much, they'll give it to me for free. They gave me some discount, but I really don't know how much. As there was no itemized receipt. They also gave me some bottles of tea for free and pre-made tea jello cups to try. After all was said and done, my wallet was much lighter when I walked out. Don't get me wrong, but all the things I bought were really good and delicious. Pork jerky, beef jerky, kum quat, crack seeds, and even some of the tea jelly. I don't regret buying all that, but I do regret stepping foot in that store, and letting the ladies push their sales tactics on me the way they did. But I know I could have bought some of these things from 99 Ranch just a few stores down. Even Costco for the pork jerky, and other crack seed stores for maybe 1/2 the cost (or less!) If I knew better, I would have yelped this place first. But I didn't even know the name of the store, or where it was. Now I do, and now I know better. I hope you do too!!!!!! read more

As a cat, I want to pee in this store. This is the used car lot of dry foods. Always ask for HALF of the amount of what you actually want. They'll play dumb and always give you twice what you ask for. BUYER BEWARE! read more

As my previous review, I must say i only come to this place when I run out. I am addicted to one of their dry plum and that's about all i buy. However, i am the only person at our house eating it so i only want to get half an pound. I cannot believe the sales when i told them i only wanted half a pound and they pushed almost 1 pound, when I told them firmly that i only want half to that, they get upset and complained about how I am not nice as a customer. I do not like to give lower than 3 stars for any business but if this is what it takes for the company to notice they need a change of their sales regarding customer service training, then it is. read more
