DISASTER Customer Service. I purchased a cake and was told it was a chocolate and vanilla cake. it ended up being soaked in alcohol. I took it to a engagement celebration and ended up completely embarrassed. I tried speaking to the ladies to see if I could get a refund; they were completely unhelpful. My day was ruined. I don't need people at a pastry shop telling me I'm lying about alcohol in the cake. ABSOLUTELY WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Ladies kept wanting to try the cake--- now you tell me how I can go to the home of the people and take back the cake I brought. SO EMBARASSING! Workers have no idea what is in their own cake. Started ok customer service, this is the day before thanksgiving. Well Before I paid I asked the worker if I can get a pictachios with my sweets . I told her that will be for my wife, she said okay we will not charge you becuse you alredy spending over $95.00. I like it! I don't have anything too bad against this place; decent price for decent desserts. I've tried half the desserts here, but there is one I would definitely come back for: a giant powdered cookie with apricot filling. Yum! It's delicious. It's probably the only thing that could withstand being in the refrigerated display for days... Which brings me to the reason why I don't enjoy the other desserts as much. Sometimes, the cakes taste stale, dry, and old (my siblings won't even eat desserts from here.) I'm sticking to what I like, and it's priced fairly. The only issue- parking is sort of a hassle. I remember this bakery. I've walked into it before and I remember walking out because I recieved bad customer service. I decided to give it another chance. After walking in, it took a while for the lady to notice that she had a customer. She only walked out because her phone rang even though I was making quite a bit of noise on purpose to get her attention. Even after getting off the phone, she kept walking in and out of the kitchen as if I wasn't there. Finally, after over a good 6 minutes, she decided to help the only customer in the store. I asked her a bit about her products, but she was very unresponsive and impatient. I really wanted to walk out, but I decided to buy something and give it a shot, hoping their products were a billion times better than her customer service. I purchased a Cinnamon Log and pistachio pastry thing. They didn't taste good. She also had baklava for $1 a piece, but I didn't want to deal with her any longer so I didn't buy one. Overall, I would not go back. Customer service was not good and the products I purchased were not tasty! The price was okay though. The cinnamon log was $1.50, I believe. It was old and disgusting and they had the gall of still selling it instead of baking a fresh batch. Pigs will fly when I make another purchase from them again. A couple nights ago, I was going to visit some friends and decided to take some pastries with me. Unfortunately, it was late in the evening, and I had pulled up moments after they had closed down for the day. As I was turning back, I recognized the owner who was walking away from the store. I stopped to say hello and after explaining my situation she offered to open back up for me. It was so sweet! I took a bunch of goodies like baklava and cookies. My friends were so happy when I showed up with their favorites. This is my go-to bakery for family events as well. They have the best cake designs and so reasonably priced. I really love this bakery. I have been coming here for years. I may not be Armenian but it is sooo good. Yes the prices have gone up but I know that is due to the economy. The cake here is always so moist and fluffy. The frosting is not too sugary or sweet. I always get the strawberry shortcake, they use a lot of real fruit. I really hope you have a chance to try them out. I've gone to other bakeries; Cuban, Mexican, and other popular ones and their cakes never tasted this good. read more

Woke up in the morning feeling like a crack cocaine addict, but with my body craving Kunafeh... Not crack...not that I have done crack before... MOVING ON! Lol... So I woke up, got the kids dressed and headed to Pasadena to get some Kunafeh. It is seriously one of the best things you'll ever taste!! I don't know if you have ever had one, but you need to have one!! It's like a catch 22... You love it cause of the amazing sugary goodness and cheese and yummy sesame bread, but you SHOULD stick to eating only one cause of all the sugar, cheese and bread. Sucks doesn't it?! Anyways... I love Kunafeh... I think they should make a shirt that says "I Love Kunafeh"... With a picture of Kunafeh on it. I just wish I lived closer or they had a bakery closer to my house. Only one of the younger lady there is Pleasant. The sweets are pretty good tasting, can't complain about the pistachio Mamoul, but the individual pastries (cakes) over the years have lost its quality, all of the dough for the pastries taste the same it kind of taste like the powder kind you buy from the supermarket they just add different tasting icing and different styles/ shapes and Walla !! you get a different pastry, supposedly. I received a sweet treat from Vrej as a "thank you" gift, but I'm not even sure what to call it. Initially it looks like a fruit tart, only it's in a sesame crust like bowl. I took this enormous, sweet treat home and knew I couldn't possibly devour the entire thing by myself, so I took it to my parents. We weren't sure what to do because if you cut it into slices, it looked as if it would fall to pieces. We're not shy, so between five of us, we grabbed forks and dug in! There are so many elements and surprises with this dessert. After you get through the fruit, you come to a heavy, creamy custard. We figured that was it, until you got to the cake! What?!? Yup, under the fruit and custard was cake, and just when you think you're through, you find that the sesame bowl is lined with chocolate! The fruit is a mix of fresh and canned produce. The custard is a little heavy for my liking, but nonetheless tasty. The cake layer was a basic white cake; nothing special and borderline dry. The dessert is very unique, but I'm still trying to figure out how one would serve this while entertaining guests! read more

What a great experience my friend and I had! We wanted kanafa, because we'd heard of it, but had never had it. Yelp directed us to Vrej Pastry. The ladies there do not speak English well, but were able to school my friend and me. We bought heated kanafa in a roll - OMG, amazing. We also bought some coconut macaroons, an almond macaroon (I think that's what it was called, bottom shelf just to the right of the coconut macaroons), and a piece of Russian honey cake. The lady gave us some Easter cookies, because she had a lot left and we were there the day after Easter. Everything was fantastic! My daughter and I came to Vrej for my grandson's 1st Birthday cake. We showed them a picture of what we wanted and she recommended flavors. We chose chocolate for the bottom layer ( it was delicious! Not overly bombarded with chocolate. It was light and fluffy. And the cream was delicious!). The middle was red velvet ( I didn't try it but everyone raved about it!). And the top was mocha( delicious!). His smash cake was vanilla with fresh strawberries! Everyone wanted a slice of that one also. The details in the cake were beautiful and immaculate! They took great pride in the delivery of the cake. Everyone loved it and asked were we got it from. The fondant was thin and not hard to cut through. i'm a big fan of sarkis (around the corner on washington), but every time i brought dessert over to michael and wendy's house from there, michael would insist i needed to try vrej. YET I NOTE HE HAS NOT YET REVIEWED THIS PLACE. *ahem* despite that, i took his sage advice and dropped by one night on the way to the dynamic duo's house. i picked up a slice of grand marnier cake, a chocolate eclair, and a piece of honey cake. the grand marnier cake was nice, if a touch too sweet, and the eclair was sadly chewy and cold, but the honey cake - damn, skippy! it tasted like a s'more transformed. it's really tasty - a dense honey cake interrupted by thin layers of marshmallow fluff-like filling and topped off with dark chocolate icing. i'll warn you that it's both addictive and heavy. you probably need to share one small piece with another person unless you want to go into a food coma afterwards. i've also tried the mamoul at vrej and i waver as to whether i prefer theirs or the ones at sarkis. mamoul is a middle eastern cookie made from semolina/farina and filled with either walnuts, pistachio, or dates. i was told that the pistachio are the best and i have to agree. they are a very adult dessert, which makes sense, as the cookies themselves are not sweetened except for a dusting of confectioner's sugar. the exterior is like a crumbly shortcake and the interior is chewy and luxurious. the filling is made of coarsely chopped pistachios, sugar, and rose water; as you can imagine, it smells heavenly. i highly suggest trying these - it's well worth $1.50 for a palm-sized mamoul. there's plenty of street parking, but don't go around 3pm on a weekday, unless you want to accidentally run over a middle schooler streaming out of marshall next door. read more

Been buying desserts and cakes from Vrej Pastry for 8 years now and I can't recall one single time when they failed to deliver the best... they literally have the most delicious stuff that is no different from the most delicious home made desserts and cakes. Once upon a time there was a little bakery shop on Washington that sold the most delightful honey cakes, but bad times let them down and the deliciousness was gone too soon. Fortunately there is really no shortage of Armenian bakeries in the area, so all is not lost. Vrej Pastries has all the same mouthwatering confections and more. As beautiful as they look on the bakery shelves, each variety is nothing like how good they are melting away on your tongue. I should have asked more questions, because I'm at a loss for what we ate and ordered, but each piece was unique and wonderful. Other than the honey cake, which was really good albeit slightly different from other versions I've had, there was an amazing sesame type cookie (?) that I believe is for New Years celebration or something similar. It's only made once a year, so if you miss it you miss it. They had it late February and early March so that would be a good time to stop in. It's like nothing i've tasted, but not in an exotice difficult to appreciate way. It's chewy, slightly sweet, with interesting flavors and spices. Whatever it is, I wish every day was New Years because I'm hooked. We tried a few other pieces and they all had their charms. Only reason they aren't getting the full five stars is they often don't have the honey cake which is a deal breaker for me, as that is the main reason we go. Even though this place has the same name as the Vrej pastry in Glendora, they seem to be different types of bakeries. This Vrej had more big cakes and less smaller pastries than the other one. I was with my friend Mary who bought what looked like a strawberry shortcake. Going into this bakery, I was half hesitant. It's not in a well known Armenian area and the store looked plain. However, I bought their 30 dollar baklava platter and brought it to my gf's place to eat. It was actually really good. I'm no expert on this, but unlike the other baklava I've eaten, it's not overly sweet to the point it taste almost like sugar. This one was slightly sweet and very tasty. After years of patronage, I am done giving them my business. They always serve their kind first regardless of your place in line. Today I went wearing a mask and respecting social distancing. They served 4 other people before me because they spoke their language. 2 older ladies clearly cut in front of me without wearing a mask and they got helped before I did. Both attendants saw me when I came in and clearly ignored me. I am not asking for privilege just for me and my patronage to be treated with respect. A staple in the Pasadena community. Vrej Pastry has been here for as long as I can remember. A small, quaint shop where you can smell the fresh baked goods as soon as you approach the door. To this day, they have the best k'nefeh, maamoul, manaeesh & cheese boregs I've ever had. Everything else is amazing as well. I'd rather come here over Panos Pastry or Sarkis Pastry any day! I absolutely love this bakery! I had ordered this version of a cake previously (6-7yrs ago) and as I am describing the cake the lady remembers and totally nailed it! Their cakes are always super moist, fresh and very reasonably priced. The ladies there are always very friendly and make me feel like I'm part of their family. On a recent trip to So. California, I was in pursuit of the best Knefeh; middle-eastern cheese desert with knefeh dough. My pursuit included both orange and LA counties. Searching Yelp yielded potential winners, so off I go. Started at Knafeh Cafe in Anaheim, overrated and expected a lot more based on ratings. Next on the list was Kunafa King inside Fresh Choice Market, there was just one little piece left and it looked pretty old perhaps from the morning. I asked for a sample and the lady behind the counter did so happily. Unfortunately, the flavor was not what I expected perhaps due to being old , I'll give it another try next time for proper evaluation. Pasadena was next on my list with couple of good rated bakeries, Sarkis and Vrej. I tried Sarkis first and it was good definitely better than the previous two. Last but not least was Vrej. The knefeh is hands down the best I've tasted in CA. The owner was helpful and pleasant to deal with. They sell it with Kaek or without. The portion is generous with perfect balance between the cheese and the knefeh. I would request light syrup as the knefeh is already sweetened( you can always add more if you want to. The search is over and Vrej is hands down the place for kenefeh. I tried some of their sliced cakes and they are meh to say the least. read more
