We just went there today for yum cha and the guy said NOMORE yum cha! Disappointed a bit as all the reviews seemed to be rather high.

I went there in the weekend and it was busy, and noticed lots of large groups. They offer traditional chineses round tables for large group and square tables for smaller family. Overall layout of the table setting is simple and clean. Prompt and friendly service! We ordered 5 dishes for 5 people and the portion was huge and we had some leftover to take home as well. Highly recommend crispy pork. Good for entree or main and good dish to share. The size is great and really tasty. If you like spicy food, ask for chilli soy sauce on the side. It goes nicely with chilli soy sauce. Also, combination egg noodle is great dish to share. Huge portion and great mixture of meats, seafood and vegetables. This dish can be replacement for vege dish as it come with substantial amount of vegetables. Gongbo chicken is another great dish. If you are up for some spicy flavour, you have to try this. The chillis in this dish is very very very hot, so avoid eating chilli as it will numb your tongue for awhile. Without the chillis, it has great spicy flavour. Not too hot, but just enough to taste the tingling spice. Salt fried squid is average dish. Seemed little too greasy and the coating was bit too oily. Not so much of my style, but if you are one of those who loves fried fried food, go for it. You might like it. Prawn with combination vege is another good dish. Not like other restaurants, they are generous in seafood. You will find substantial amout of seafood and prawns when you order. Highly recommend in ordering at least one seafood dish! They have so many choices..! Good to go by pictures on the menu if you are unsure. What you see on menu photos will be what you get. Overall, great dinner and good for group outing.

I had a BAD dim sum dining experience here last week, which is quite sad to say, considering the…read morevast number of above-average Chinese eateries which can be found in the same area. Normally when dim sum'ming, you will encounter both good and bad dishes, but Star Cafe consistently served bad bad, very BAD dim sum. I could taste the same foul, week-old smell from the flour used to make cheong fun (prawn or pork wrapped in flat rice flour). The yam in a fried dish tasted at least a week old again. YUCK. Not very nice and it had the same off-smell to it. The decor of the place is quite nice, but the food is just horrible. I cannot explain it further. The food is horrible. Full stop. The final insult came when paying the bill, and it was not cheap considering the quality of food that was offered. I strongly suggest you avoid this place, and you will thank me for it.

It was only after reading a recent review by Cheap Eats that I remembered how much I used to love it. I had a re-read of the review I wrote back in 2013, "After driving past Royal City Dumpling many times I finally tried last week and I am very glad I did, it will now be my go to restaurant in Auckland for dumplings as they were truly delicious. Their pork and fennel dumplings were particularly amazing. I look forward to going back to try the noodles which also looked great. The owners are friendly and prices very reasonable." Their menu has changed since then. They now have a yum char menu as well as a full dumpling menu and full sized Chinese menu. I have since been back twice in one week which is always a good sign. The first time was to try their yum char menu for dinner. We were excited by all the options and low prices but knew we couldn't order everything this time. We went with the Steamed Coriander and Shrimp Dumplings ($5.30), Deep Fried Squid ($6.50), Deep Fried Spring Rolls ($6.50) and the Stir-fried Chinese Veges ($11.80). This was more than enough for two people. The squid was extremely large for $6.50 and while it was delicious we really needed another 1 or 2 people to help us finish it. The spring rolls were probably my favourite. They were FULL of shrimp and were crispy and delicious. But everything was good. I then went back to get some takeaway dumplings for dinner. Pork and Fennel pan-fried. As Royal Dumpling is across the road from Pak n Save I thought I would pop over while the dumplings were being made. I may have left them for too long as when I got them home they were a bit chewy, luke warm and not that great. This was entirely my fault, I just want to warn people so they are not tempted to do the same. I was a sad dumpling eater that night.

Also double check your bag before you leave as we had to return because they forgot to pack everything we paid for. Sorry no pics, they were devoured before I could take any.
