After hearing good things about this place we felt we had to come check it out, plus well ,we do love a good yum cha as much as a lot of others. Even though we came only about half an hour after opening time the place was already packed and a queue had formed. Waiting time of around half hour we were told and so we became No. 28 in the queue.. No worries we had waited longer in other places in town..... My first impressions. Well obviously it was good enough what with people spilling out the door waiting ( for me this is a sign that the restaurant is a good one ) and inside the service what I saw seemed to run pretty smoothly, trolleys went round the restaurant dropping their delicious delights on the tables of hungry patrons then off to quickly replenish for another round and tables were cleared quickly to allow for more customers to be seated. Well after the half hour wait we got seats at a table with 4 other couples. I love this sitting at the table with people you don't know!!!. Anyway we ended up sampling the prawn dumplings , radish cake , chicken siumai, steamed pork rib , fried sticky rice ball with meat inside , eggplant with fishmeat filling ( 茄盒 ) and porridge ( this porridge with the blue egg is a must for me always at yum cha ). All were very tasty , the porridge being one of the best I have tasted around Auckland. We had ordered too much as usual so ended up taking away the leftovers to savour later. The bill did not make as big a dent in the bank balance as a lot of other yum cha's we had had.....which was great. It worked out pretty cheap actually. Especially compared to other restaurants round town. End verdict......definite must for future yum cha's!!!

The yum in yum cha. What a great dim sum place. Went here on a Saturday morning-ish (around 11:30) and we just beat the rush. Being a party of two we were seated right away on a shared table. Our seating was perfect, smack central but close to the kitchen so the carts were passing by us all the time. The selection is of dim sum is very good, with plenty of sweet and savory delights to taste. I must say the quality of the food is very high, the food was not overly greasy and salty. I can't wait to go back with a bigger group, because just the two of us could not do too much damage.

Good yum cha and also night menu is good. But if you want to order specialties like medicine duck you need to make the order 2 days before.

It was only after reading a recent review by Cheap Eats that I remembered how much I used to love it. I had a re-read of the review I wrote back in 2013, "After driving past Royal City Dumpling many times I finally tried last week and I am very glad I did, it will now be my go to restaurant in Auckland for dumplings as they were truly delicious. Their pork and fennel dumplings were particularly amazing. I look forward to going back to try the noodles which also looked great. The owners are friendly and prices very reasonable." Their menu has changed since then. They now have a yum char menu as well as a full dumpling menu and full sized Chinese menu. I have since been back twice in one week which is always a good sign. The first time was to try their yum char menu for dinner. We were excited by all the options and low prices but knew we couldn't order everything this time. We went with the Steamed Coriander and Shrimp Dumplings ($5.30), Deep Fried Squid ($6.50), Deep Fried Spring Rolls ($6.50) and the Stir-fried Chinese Veges ($11.80). This was more than enough for two people. The squid was extremely large for $6.50 and while it was delicious we really needed another 1 or 2 people to help us finish it. The spring rolls were probably my favourite. They were FULL of shrimp and were crispy and delicious. But everything was good. I then went back to get some takeaway dumplings for dinner. Pork and Fennel pan-fried. As Royal Dumpling is across the road from Pak n Save I thought I would pop over while the dumplings were being made. I may have left them for too long as when I got them home they were a bit chewy, luke warm and not that great. This was entirely my fault, I just want to warn people so they are not tempted to do the same. I was a sad dumpling eater that night.

Also double check your bag before you leave as we had to return because they forgot to pack everything we paid for. Sorry no pics, they were devoured before I could take any.

Their menu is huge! With everything from soup to meat dishes, vegetables, rice, noodles, and dim sum, they have it all! My biggest complaint here though is the price. They have set menus for $28-45/person basically but they didn't have a set menu that had everything we really liked. But if you order off their regular menu, 1 dish was around $30 so it really adds up quickly when you order family style. As far as the food goes, everything was pretty good! We tried their wonton soup, seafood baby spinach soup, crispy roast duck, sauteed green beans/eggplant in black bean sauce, yangchow fried rice, and stir fried beef egg noodles. Luckily portions were big, the food came out piping hot, and everything tasted great! I would recommend China Yum Char to others! The food was better than expected, and service was great!

Of course I did! I wanted to try all of them! Bank balance be damned! Here are some of my favourite items from the menu: deep fried squid, prawn spring rolls, prawn dumplings, spinach dumplings... prawns prawns dumplings dumplings, repeat. I lost count of how many tiny morsels I stuffed into my gob, but they were all amazing. At the end of the meal we were offered "deep fried milk", which we were to discover was deep fried sweetened condensed milk. Eating one of these little packages was an absolute finishing move for me and I had to go home for a lie down... and a long hard think about my dining habits!
