So it made perfect sense when the sky was turning dark and started to drizzle. The place was booming at 1pm, had about 20 odd people inside. I had a look around, they were all Koreans. Which means the place is quite popular amongst their own. Which is a good sign to me about the quality of the restaurant. I mean you hardly see any Chinese people eating at your local Chinese takeaways, if any? Right? The menu brought back some memories about high school. It's basically two pieces of printed A4 glued to the inside of a Manila folder. The whole left side is the drinks menu, the right side is the meat menu. I thought this Faro is gonna be like the other Faros, which served all kinds of Korean delicacies. And you'd be wrong if you think that too. This Faro is actually a steak house. I was very surprised. Pleasantly surprised. I know that the Koreans love their beef, they have 120 cuts of meat off a cattle. all the major steak types that we love in nz is listed on the menu. And Faro states their beef is aged 28 days. So I had high hopes even tho I didn't feel like a steak. I asked for the teriyaki pork Katsu, and after much debate my mate went for the 400g T bone. Ok, now comes the good part. The Katsu is priced at 15 dollars. The t-bone is priced at $28. I mean, the prices seems pretty normal for a steak house. Right? But... Lol. The price also includes the full all you can eat salad bar. I was speechless, literally. And when my Katsu arrived on the table, I was basically shocked. The portion is so generous compare to the 15 dollar price tag. And the meat is not wafer thin. It's real nice and thick and juicy. And the sweet teriyaki sauce is just perfect for the pork. My mate asked for a med rare steak. And it arrived med rare, I wasn't very impressed with his choice of garlic sauce for the steak tho. Oh well, each to their own. The Faro's version of garlic sauce did intrigue me a bit. It's a soy sauce based sauce. I didn't get to taste it, but my mate said it tasted fantastic. I don't know how he could chow down a whole t-bone, two plates of salad, and still reach across the table to eat most of my kumara fries and some of my Katsu. Lol. Well, this is a place that really did surprise me. The beef is tender and nice. The salad is free and all you can eat. The place is warm and cozy. Oh yea, I forgot that the service is very very friendly. And a huge lunch for two plus alcohol only costed 61 bucks in total. So Faro. Please keep up the good work.

From meat, vegetables, sauces, salads, breads and soups, to pancakes and ice cream, the buffet…read morespread at Gengis Khan has got to be one of the most extensive I have seen! As the name suggests, it's named after the Mongolian warrior, Genghis Khan. The food itself isn't Mongolian, but apparently this is how Genghis Khan fed his army after a brutal battle. Fun fact, huh? The basic concept of the Mongolian BBQ is simple. First, you fill a bowl up with raw meats (namely chicken, beef, lamb, and seafood), vegetables, sauces, oils and noodles. I'm not too much of a meat expert but I thought their meats were of fairly good quality. Then, you take it up to the chefs manning the huge hotplate in the middle of the restaurant, and watch them cook your selection to perfection (hey, that rhymed)! There is also fried rice and white rice available, as well as garlic bread, baked root vegetables and soups. For the vegetarians out there, not only do they have a wide range of vegetables that can be cooked by the chefs, there are plenty of fresh selections at the salad bar. To round your meal off, you can get the chefs to dish you up a pancake. If you ask nicely, they might even be able to make you one in the shape of Mickey Mouse. The pancakes are probably my highlight of the dining experience - super fluffy and they also have a variety of toppings and ice cream which you can put on them. The downside of this place is that it is quite small and it does get very busy. There will be times where you have to wait a while for the chef to cook your meal - my longest wait was nearly 30 minutes! Overall, the atmosphere of Gengis Khan is exciting, although a little noisy at times. Considering that you can eat all to your heart's content, the price is quite reasonable. It is a casual, family-friendly restaurant, so it's definitely more suited for family gatherings. I frequented this place quite often during my high school years, but I feel like I've 'grown out of it'... mainly because most of their patrons are either families or large groups of teenagers. Just make sure that you go hungry!

Buffet eating is not really my thing but the kids LOVE IT. So much so that I found myself making a booking for 22 people on a Friday night for my son's 10th birthday. Unfortunately we were seated outside in the covered courtyard which is so loud you can't hear yourself think. Add 14 kids and get yourself several large alcoholic beverages. The pricing here is amazing value (those other buffet restaurants could learn a thing or two), with adults costing $25 and kids $5 plus $1 for every year i.e. a 10 year old costs $15. The food on offer here is actually really good and as a semi-vegetarian, I never imagined I would be saying that about a Mongolian BBQ restaurant. There's always two soups, usually meat-free and really tasty. Garlic bread to go with. Mmmmm. The salad bar is fresh and includes everything I would want - boiled eggs, beetroot, pickles, olives, red onions etc and a good choice of dressings. There's also pasta and potato salads plus a few other as well. Then there's the hot selection: fried noodles, a really oily but delicious fettucine, various veggies, tortilla chips, mini spring rolls, pastries..... see what I mean? A LOT of choice here. Oh yeah, and that Mongolian BBQ thing. True, you have to select your ingredients and wait in the line but this is all part of the fun (Jesus it's a FIIIIIRE! Somebody IS barbecuing). There's everything you could want for your barbecued meal and it's all really fresh looking and again, serious value - shrimps, chicken, beef, pretty much every kind of animal you might want to get cooked and put on your plate. You can also wait in line for fresh pancakes for dessert and my only gripe is the manky water the ice cream scoops sit in. There's probably no way to avoid this as I know they do replace it regularly and being able to scoop their own ice cream and add their own assortment of toppings is another reason to bring your children here. It's noisy, busy and there will absolutely be kids underfoot that are perhaps a little over-excited, but just look at their little faces - they are having the best time! You can't be grumpy about that. Just go, it's reeeeeeally good for what it is.

The place was kind of quiet, which is apparently not usually the case. Genghis Khan in a nutshell, is all you can eat buffet. There's a selection of raw meats and vegetables and asian style sauces which you pile into a bowl and take to a chef at the back of the room. They fry up your meal on a giant hotplate, and dump it back onto a plate for you to consume. In addition to this 'cook infront of you' experience, there's also a selection of other odd buffet items - fries, noodles, macaroni and cheese, cold boiled eggs and salads, broccoli soup and bread. It's a real mix of cuisines. The dessert consists of made to order cook infront of you pancakes with a bunch of toppings you can chuck on. It's relatively well priced (considering you can eat as much as you want), at $25 a head. But don't expect anything too flash. It's a bit dirty feeling in there, very family friendly and very 'cheap eats' feeling.

Parking is pretty good that part of Parnell and so once we walked all the way into the depths of the building on the ground floor all was well. We were seated quickly, and had our waitress come with water and to answer any additional questions promptly. She recommended a number of sharing plates, which was fine by us as we thought that would probably be a good way to go anyway. We started off with some of the lotus chips which were awesome. We then received a selection of dishes including lamb short ribs, crispy pork ribs (a winner), supposedly very spicy bang bang chicken in lettuce cups (it wasn't that spicy but had a bit of kick and was delicious too), Crispy squid tentacles were also a popular choice. The kung pao soft shell crab was tasty but a bit small serving wise, and the dumplings all tasty too. The pork belly was average, nothing wrong with it but not a standout. My wife especially liked the slow cooked beef shin. Service was excellent, food was tasty and interesting, restaurant a little dimly lit but very cool nevertheless (perhaps better for dates than family dining but I'm being picky here). My only quibble is value, it's not bad value for money but it wasn't great value either. If it were slightly cheaper I wouldn't hesitate to score it 5/5. However, that is not a deterrent to me wanting to try the restaurant again, as the Rest of the package was all of a very high standard. We will be back for sure.
