In a way it seems to be one of those places that indicates that Reservoir is slowly but surely being bitten by the hipster bug. However, being tucked away down in the back streets means that it can be a little difficult to find. Anyway, seeing it, and doubting that I would be down here again any time soo, I decided to pop in for a coffee. Well, coffee was pretty cool, but I also have to mention that Darth Vader was also standing in the middle of the room. I'm not sure what he was waiting for because he was there when I arrived, and I got my coffee before he got anything, so I'm still a little baffled. However, as a coffee spot it wasn't bad.

Everything is done well. Nothing is over complicated. Review: The cafe is on the north side of lower Heidelberg road. It's a pleasantly laid out establishment. There are nice wood featured chairs and tables throughout. A wood covered front counter as well. Brick walls throughout too with one small tiled wall. There's a reasonable distance between tables. Nice lighting is also featured. Conventional music playing on the sound system, a bit prosaic for me but I could have just scored the wrong rotated playlist. Maybe needs something a little softer. Overall the space has a nice warm cozy feel that was very likable . I scored a pleasant greeting on arrival. It was hard not to notice the manager and staff interacting well with patrons, which enhanced the nice feel of the cafe. I had a beautiful coffee first off which came out quickly after I ordered it. It was a rich, dark, well made brew with impressive length. No half measures were taken on this long black. It was a beauty. The food is the key though, eh. It's a smallish menu here for all day breakfast and lunch. I found that an advantage as too many menu items can befuddle a simple soul like me. Nothing was overcomplicated and this menu offered ample choice I thought. I ordered the curds and beets dish off the lunch menu. This consists of goats cheese croquettes, heirloom baby beets, beetroot pesto and a frisée salad. It's a rustic looking dish but wonderfully so. It made for a gorgeous lunch that gave me all the freshness, health and flavour I was after when I walked in. The goats cheese croquettes were soft, delicate and exquisitely flavoured. They were really lovely. The heirloom beets of various kinds were excellent too. Tasty with just the right amount of give. Lovely greens with a good dressing as well. The side of peas and broad beans was really delicious too. I could barely fault these dishes which were very good. Maybe a tiny bit more seasoning on both dishes, although maybe many people want to control this themselves. I found myself preferring this cafe to a few of those in the inner north. The concentration here is on substance not style. I thoroughly enjoyed the cafe which has only been open a few months. Based on this experience, it will do very well indeed.

The coffee is superb - with ever changing options of single origin blends to choose from, as well as the usual house blends that most cafes have, which are always extremely tasty. Their menu is on the unique and very very yummy side of the cafe spectrum. And their many baked goods are all superbly crafted. In fact there is little that the Red Door Corner Store doesn't do well. Their staff are all knowledgeable, friendly, happy and attentive. And they sell a range of home made jams, conserves, chutneys and sauces that you can buy to take home with you. They also sell take-away freshly baked bread, if you are still feeling a little peckish are a veritable feast of Corner Store delights. I really can't recommend this place enough. I even like the fact that it is situated in a back streets of Northcote - not another shop in sight.

Reading the menu nearly induced a (further) personal crisis as I found it most difficult to choose the optimal breakfast. I ultimately chose the huevos rancheros which is nominated on the menu as a house speciality and which previous reviewers have commented on most favourably. I'm delighted to report that I have rarely made a wiser food choice in my time on earth. The dish is superbly composed and astonishingly satisfying. Again I found myself thanking a nearby deity for locating me in this great city of Melbourne. I found every element of the huevos rancheros to be spot on the mark. The tortilla was fresh, light and fluffy. The scrambled eggs the same and so light they risked becoming airborne without their tortilla casing. The beans were black, moorish and so so good and tasty. The cream was luscious and gorgeous. And so on, and so on. It's just a magnificent dish. Whoever designed it deserves an order of Australia. To the chef, the same. If they're one and the same person, give them a hefty cash gratuity from commonwealth coffers too for outstanding and selfless service to the nation and the physical and mental health of its people. And, while we're at it, and in a spirit of inclusion, give the server an award of magnitude too for conveying the dish so elegantly and efficiently over several metres from kitchen to my table. My best to you all. I haven't talked about the cafe itself. It's not large and I can see why it would quickly get busy sometimes with people having to wait a bit. So be it. Sometimes the small places are the best. We found a table quickly. It did get noisy quite rapidly because they were a few young rowdy kids there with their parents. The only kid that bothered me was the one held directly at us face first from the adjacent table. I'm not entirely sure why someone would think it was acceptable to directly face a screaming child at people, but there you go, they did that. Perhaps it was because the kid had been denied the huevos rancheros on this morning. Who cares. We were in a benign almost zen like state and resisted a momentary urge to scream back at the kid from a few inches away. Good food can induce this sort of calm. So I'm putting it down to the trance like afterglow from the huevos rancheros. I had a couple of coffees and they were outstanding. Rich, luscious and creamy with deep and elegant flavour. Coffee as good as I've ever had anywhere. Finally, I liked the service here very much. The server was a tall happy young soul who either loves his job and people or is a very skilled actor. He was calm, polite, interested, engaging and efficient throughout. All power to him. I was also impressed by the smiles I was seeing behind the counter and in the kitchen. My point is that this looked and felt like a happy place and even had a saying to that effect over the kitchen door. It's obvious I loved it here. I rarely give fives but went extremely close here. It's a 4.8 from me and I'm returning as soon as I can.
