In a way it seems to be one of those places that indicates that Reservoir is slowly but surely being bitten by the hipster bug. However, being tucked away down in the back streets means that it can be a little difficult to find. Anyway, seeing it, and doubting that I would be down here again any time soo, I decided to pop in for a coffee. Well, coffee was pretty cool, but I also have to mention that Darth Vader was also standing in the middle of the room. I'm not sure what he was waiting for because he was there when I arrived, and I got my coffee before he got anything, so I'm still a little baffled. However, as a coffee spot it wasn't bad.

Everything is done well. Nothing is over complicated. Review: The cafe is on the north side of lower Heidelberg road. It's a pleasantly laid out establishment. There are nice wood featured chairs and tables throughout. A wood covered front counter as well. Brick walls throughout too with one small tiled wall. There's a reasonable distance between tables. Nice lighting is also featured. Conventional music playing on the sound system, a bit prosaic for me but I could have just scored the wrong rotated playlist. Maybe needs something a little softer. Overall the space has a nice warm cozy feel that was very likable . I scored a pleasant greeting on arrival. It was hard not to notice the manager and staff interacting well with patrons, which enhanced the nice feel of the cafe. I had a beautiful coffee first off which came out quickly after I ordered it. It was a rich, dark, well made brew with impressive length. No half measures were taken on this long black. It was a beauty. The food is the key though, eh. It's a smallish menu here for all day breakfast and lunch. I found that an advantage as too many menu items can befuddle a simple soul like me. Nothing was overcomplicated and this menu offered ample choice I thought. I ordered the curds and beets dish off the lunch menu. This consists of goats cheese croquettes, heirloom baby beets, beetroot pesto and a frisée salad. It's a rustic looking dish but wonderfully so. It made for a gorgeous lunch that gave me all the freshness, health and flavour I was after when I walked in. The goats cheese croquettes were soft, delicate and exquisitely flavoured. They were really lovely. The heirloom beets of various kinds were excellent too. Tasty with just the right amount of give. Lovely greens with a good dressing as well. The side of peas and broad beans was really delicious too. I could barely fault these dishes which were very good. Maybe a tiny bit more seasoning on both dishes, although maybe many people want to control this themselves. I found myself preferring this cafe to a few of those in the inner north. The concentration here is on substance not style. I thoroughly enjoyed the cafe which has only been open a few months. Based on this experience, it will do very well indeed.

Almost everything on their menu is a winner, and with daily specials you really get more than what you would otherwise expect from a cafe in a small strip like this. You really do develop an appreciation for the chef who without fail delivers all meals cooked to perfection and comes up with innovative dishes. The coffee is superb - with ever changing options of single origin blends to choose from, as well as the usual house blends that most cafes have, which are always extremely tasty. Their menu is on the unique and very very yummy side of the cafe spectrum. And their many baked goods are all superbly crafted. In fact there is little that the Red Door Corner Store doesn't do well. Their staff are all knowledgeable, friendly, happy and attentive. And they sell a range of home made jams, conserves, chutneys and sauces that you can buy to take home with you. They also sell take-away freshly baked bread, if you are still feeling a little peckish are a veritable feast of Corner Store delights. I really can't recommend this place enough. I even like the fact that it is situated in a back streets of Northcote - not another shop in sight.

It's executed well enough but didn't blow me away. I had the huevos rancheros - it was fine but not the best I've had. Standards are so high these days and when you have a place like short round so close who are absolutely killing it, you need something a little more than these guys offer right now. So I guess I'm saying I wouldn't go here outright but it's fine if you need to eat and short round is busy.
