    French toast.
    Adam P.

From the outside and even from the photos on yelp, I wasn't that excited to come to Red Door Corner Store. But what they delivered was one the best French toasts I've ever had and some good coffee. My friends had baked eggs and dukkah eggs which were both equally impressive. It's a small little venue when the weekend crowd is in, but we got a seat pretty easily out the back. Price for 3 people was about $85 and included the breakfasts and multiple drinks each. I'm not even sure if that's good value or not these days, but it neither felt cheap nor expensive. Thumbs up to this place!

Dearest Red Door, You make me want to move into the Northcote area. I so wish you were my local cafe. I long to live nearby so I can stroll down to you on a Sunday morning, who am I kidding? Every morning. You have local milk bar vibe on the outside, but the crowded tables filled with satisfied customers allude to a delightful food experience within. I love your busy but relaxed environment and complete charm. Your staff are cheery and helpful and your paper bag menu's and décor casual and quirky, exactly how I like my cafes and brunch spots. I wish your hidden outdoor court yard was my secret. Alas it isn't. Your coffee is a delight. It has the strength of other coffee but none of the bitter aftertaste. You are a bittersweet experience though. As I consume you I just want more. Every. Single. Time. Your food counters make me want to devour everything you have to offer. Even after I have polished off something from your perfect breakfast menu, how is that so? Your baked eggs with beans, bacon and jalapeno oil are spicy and delectable. The accompanying multigrain toast tastefully and texturally fantastic. In fact every time you feed me I think "this is the best dish ever" and then I try something else! See you as soon as I can steel away again. Yours. No really I am. Jo

Iconic must visit Northcote cafe. It's a terrific place. A lovely spot to spend an hour or so. Food's always good and the menu offers good choice. Coffee's always good. Service is always good too. Actually, good understates it. Very good to excellent would be better descriptors. Our coffees here this morning were excellent. Service from multiple servers was great too.

With my friend having recently moved to Thornbury and raving about how he's taken family and friends here, I decided it was time I paid him a visit and had brunch there myself. Located in a suburban street, it is easy to find parking. I drove past it twice thinking it was a milk bar and then it struck me - red door corner store aka milk bar facade - duh! I got there around 11.45am on a Sunday late morning and was told there was a 15 minutes wait. The lovely waitress came up to me just before 12pm and took me to a table of four. When I entered, I noticed tables were scarce and despite more room in the back, I didn't realise that the cafe actually has a beautiful heated covered courtyard. What a gorgeous way to spend a slightly sunny Melbourne July arvo. We were promptly seated and handed menus with so so many options. I had been eyeing the corn zucchini quinoa fritters covered in salsa placed atop a bed of black beans, onions, tomatoes and topped with avocado and a delicious poached egg. So, I got this dish. My brunch companions got the day's special - chilli trout scrambled eggs, the dukkah eggs on toast and the acai bowl. Each dish was substantial and priced around 16-18 dollars - so very reasonable. The coffees arrived quickly. Mine was quite milky but at least it was extra hot. Not strong or robust bodied but good for a Sunday afternoon. My quinoa corn zucchini fritters were quite filling and I only had half of the dish. I didn't taste much sweetness of the corn and thought they were quite bland despite the topping. The black beans seemed out of place but yet were satisfying. The dukkah eggs just tasted quite strange. Dukkah coated eggs was new and I just didn't identify the flavour preferring panko fried eggs. My brunch companion however said that they tasted great with the poached bear and gf bread. So, perhaps the dish only tastes great if you eat it with everything served rather than on its own. Hmm.. My friend devoured his trout chilli scrambled eggs saying that he liked the flavours of the trout though it was not visible but wished it had more chilli in it. The other friend enjoyed her acai bowl which had substantial pieces of fruits and other natural goodness. Service was very quick. Staff attentive and lovely. Split billing available. Definitely keen to go and try more. p.s. The waitress now remembers my friend's coffee order which is very nice.

Incredible. I enjoyed the kind of brunch you want to talk about for days but fear the eye rolling and glazed-over faces of those you encounter. The cheesy polenta haloumi dish was perfection. The service was friendly and fit out is warm and welcoming.

dukka eggs; who knew eggs could get more amazing. not I. and they were poached perfectly, still runny. the saffron infused peach and pomegranate seeds with Persian feta and generous helping of smashed avo was awesome, love that you didn't skimp on portions even with such quality and local produce. so tasty. thank you.

This restaurant has some of the best and freshest foods around. It is cute, lovely and hosted by the nicest people you could meet. It completely blew my mind the salads and atmosphere was second to none. I ate there 3 times in 4 days... don't miss this treasure of food heaven!!! Cheers and can't wait to go back...all the way from Califorinia!

Lots to like about Red Door. It's far enough away from High St to avoid peak-hipster patronage, and thus retains a genuine neighbourhoodly feel. The small courtyard is cute and dog-friendly, the staff very welcoming and sprightly bunch, and the food fantastic. Just an all-round pretty perfect brunch nook.

Red door corner store is an unpretentious gem. Amazing and interesting additions to the regular brunch items. And the regulars are by no means boring. The service was fantastic and accomodating to a large group with little ones. I cannot turn down mork hot chocolate and the lattes did not disappoint either. If anything my only complaint is that i couldnt have 2 brunchs :)

It's in the back back streets of Clifton Hill but has an impressively constant stream of customers. There's a low key casual decor that sort of works here. Low key but effective service throughout as well too. Not many smiles here but plenty of efficiency. I had the pork and beans dish which I adored. A great dish for another cool grey Melbourne day. The pork and fennel sausages in this dish were spectacularly good. As good as you could make, I reckon. If they were made on site someone here is a sausage maker of rare genius. They're superb. The beans were lovely as well with nice heat evident from the jalapeño. Nice bits of ciabatta to spread the beans on as well. This was a really lovely and perfectly sized dish. The world's most beautiful woman was disappointed in her dish though. It was a toastie with pulled pork. I had a taste and liked it but she wasn't keen on the chilli in the pulled pork. Her point was that the chilli part wasn't noted on the menu and she wasn't keen on the unexpected heat at all. A real shame. Super coffee to finish. We both really enjoyed our respective coffees, a long black and a flat white. They kindly gave one coffee free because of the unnoted chilli in the toastie. I'd definitely return here. I liked the place.

Every time I've looked at the reviews it's sounded interesting and well worth checking out. In my mind I was going out for a Melbourne style brunch which we're all familiar with. Instead, I got an unexpectedly wonderful taste of French cuisine. My head's still spinning from this experience. After we sat down the server/manager recommended the beef bourguignon, one of the listed specials for the day. I've had this dish a number of times including in France and most recently at France Soir in Toorak Road. It's a favourite of mine. I love a nicely constructed beef stew, basically. The server basically asked me to trust him while also informing me that the chef was French as he appeared to be himself too. To cut to the chase, the dish was absolutely superb. Easily the best beef bourguignon I have had anywhere. The meat was in roughly cut chunks and so beautifully tender but without any danger of being over cooked. The red wine sauce was luscious as well and with some equally well cooked carrot and potato, the dish was utterly wonderful. The perfect dish for a cool Melbourne day. Just so delicious and so hearty and that I carefully mopped up all the sauce with the bread provided. We were very kindly given a complimentary taste of the stewed fruit they serve here. That was superb as well. And, our coffees to finish were fantastic too. This is one of my highlights of the year coming to The Bell Jar. You don't come here for the decor which is impressively lowbrow inside. You come here for the food, and what I was lucky enough to have here today was completely superb.

In fact it is my favourite cafe and brings me happiness and joy every time I frequent the place. Not because it is the ultimate cafe. It doesn't do the best poached eggs, the best coffee or any such. But it does do all of these things very very well. No. The reasons I like this place are much more subtle than this. I like the laid back and simple but well thought out seating, decor and vibe of the place. I like the fact that it is founded and run by a young guy who is clearly passionate about what he does. I also get the feeling that this place is cool - not trying to be cool like so many cafes - it just is. But most importantly for me is the menu. I really like the fact that not only is everything really tasty, it is also slightly original. You will not find any baked eggs with chorizo or avocado, poached eggs with dukka on sourdough here. Everything on the menu is well thought out and subtly different. My favourite is the green eggs and ham - with pesto scrambled eggs, free range ham on an english muffin with tomato relish. Yum! In light of such, I believe this place should have been named after a far more happy and joyous novelist - Dr. Seuss.

They want to show independent cinema, which doesn't draw crowds. Means they can't compete with the chains on comfort or space, which means they can't pull in large crowds for the more commercial films they show. Why none of this applies to the Westgarth, I don't know. But it's an independent cinema (well, more or less) that combines the stylistic aspirations of the old cinema culture with the comfort and convenience of the new chains. And they still show a whole load of independent film. Final note: on Friday nights, they do a midnight screening of a cult movie every week.
