Heard great things and all the work I've seen looks fantastic. I'm sure it's a top notch place. I was going to be in town for a few days and tried 3 days in a row to get an appointment or a walk in. First time I called they took my info and never called back. Next day the guy I spoke to seemed annoyed to even be talking to me, told me to just check the day I was going to be there and try for a walk-in. Day three spoke to a girl who was super friendly and said it should be no problem and took my info. No call back...I was nearby so stopped in to check. She said they were finishing a walk-in now and still shouldn't be a problem and she would call me. Went and got some food and waited for a couple hours...nothing. It was an hour from close at that point so called again, a guy answered, I explained I had been waiting for a call back about a walk-in... "Nope...sorry." It was short notice and I understand if I had more time to book an appointment it probably would have been a different experience entirely. I get it, they're good and they are busy. But what I wanted seemed pretty quick and easy, and I was more than willing to pay a premium. I was in town for a few days and didn't appreciate the runaround I got. I wish someone would have just said "No, not interested" to begin with or at least returned my calls so I didn't waste a night off sitting around waiting for no reason. read more

I wanted a tattoo over a burn scar I got some years ago. They were very nice in giving me my options, and looked at my sketch to see what they could do, how big it had to be, etc. Their schedule was pretty full, but somehow they fit me in the next day for Eric. The next day, I received a call that Eric got very sick, so they wanted me to come in a little earlier and get it done by Doug. I appreciated the call letting me know what was up. Although I got there when they told me to, Doug still didn't get there until my original appointment time (another hour later) but it was fine for me because I didn't eat yet. When he got there, he took my idea and started sketching. It didn't come out exactly how I wanted it, because he took out some features that he didn't think were necessary, like my Grandmother's name. Lucky for me later though, I remembered that my grandmother HATED tattoos and probably would've been mad. When he got the design down and made a stencil, it didn't cover the whole scar but it got the important parts. His booth was clean and cool and he was very nice to me. He did change his mind about some colors that he initially thought my darker skin wouldn't take, but when he mixed it, it came out nice. All in all, I would go to this place again. I just didn't like the misinformation about who was doing my tatt or when to come in. UPDATE: I went back here 2 years later for my second tattoo and finally worked with eric...he's the best! He was the ONLY artist I could find that took what I wanted seriously and made it epic! The colors he chose to use went well with my skin and he's super friendly! I told my bf to go to him, and he's gone to him twice already for a half-sleeve! He's going to do my half-sleeve too..you give him a tiny idea and he can make anything out of it. Highly recommended! Only thing I would be wary of though, is that I've noticed ALL the artists there try very hard to talk people out of their ideas. I realize that they are just making sure you actually want it, but there's a line between a small suggestion and completely trying to change your idea. Stick to your guns if there's something you absolutely want. Most of the problems were size-related. read more

This post recieved 5 stars mostly because of Eric the tatooist. He tattoos both my wife and I, he is artistic , great listener but a straight shooter. LOVE IT! While tattooing he puts you at ease with conversations and really tries to build a rapport with you. One time he scheduled my wife and I for one full work day (8 hrs) he did my sleeve and my wife's half sleeve...he was completely motivated the entire time! I will definitely continue to go to voodoo monkey as long as Eric works there. If he leaves I will follow him. Also, the place was extremely clean and everything was sterile, brand new ,sealed. Eric even called me yesterday to get me in earlier because the appointment ahead of me no call/no showed (and then posted a 2 star review, of all things), and so we were able to do the entire Two Wolves piece in a single sitting. I have sat for a total of 5 sessions and almost 25 hours here now, and have had the opportunity to see work from most of their staff during those visits and they are all tremendously talented. I couldn't be happier or recommend Lauren any more. Tattoo styles really vary from artist to artist and it is hard to tell every single person reading a review to go see a certain artist. But I can say that anything I have seen from Lauren has been fantastic and she really seems to excel at black and grey work. We consulted via email about what I would like with my vague ideas and when I walked into the shop on appointment day, the drawing was perfect! The shop itself is clean and industrial and I liked the vibe inside. There was some weird playlist that was going from metal to 80's to today's hits and it oddly enough caught my attention enough to make the time pass faster! I get compliments on my tattoo all the time and am more than happy to refer them to the shop. read more

The staff was incredibly rude. It was our first time getting tattoos and we were made to feel very uncomfortable. I was extremely nervous before coming and a few days before my appointment, I was going back and forth with the tattooist via email to finalize a design. I'm indecisive and expressed that to him, which he responded "go with the first design since it's already drawn up. The second is too small" and "please know what you want, I don't want to have to change up designs last minute". Mind you these were very small simple tattoos (initials and 2 small words) I had no idea how the process worked and honestly thought they drew it up when you were there to talk through it with you. When we got there, we weren't explained the process or helped with making sure we got exactly what we wanted. So I ended up getting something I'm not totally happy with and was too uncomfortable to get the second tattoo I wanted. Also FYI, it's cash only.. and the atm is broken. Also they require a $50 deposit when booking the appointment. Usually this goes towards the cost of your tattoo, BUT apparently if you reschedule your appointment and give notice 48 hours in advance, you lose your deposit?!! That's honestly the only reason I still went here, didn't want to lose the deposit. I was never notified that was the case while I was rescheduling my appointment. Plus I'm pretty sure he took advantage of us and overcharged us. Since I lost the deposit I paid $130 for a tiny tattoo that is 3 small letters 1/2 a centimeter tall and my friend was charged the same amount for 1 tiny letter ($80). Is this normal???? Sometimes what makes a great tattoo shop isn't the quality of the work they do but the quality of the work they don't do. Case in point: me. Over the years he has talked me out of a lot of tattoos that would have really sucked to be on me forever. There was the eight inch "Uncle Bucky RIP We'll Never Forget You." for my chest that never happened. Good thing too since Uncle Bucky wasn't really my uncle and we did in fact forget him almost right away. He was always jamming me for money - kind of a dick. Anyway, there was the Chinese symbol that would have been stupid and the little stars near your crotch which I think is for chicks and the knuckle thing which I would have had to scrape off with a pocket knife and the Shaquille O'neal and the love America thing and well, you get the point. I am a better person for these guys not doing every tattoo. And I don't care what anybody says LeBron James tats are awesome and who knows maybe he'll be back in a Cavs uniform some day. I've read a lot of positive things about voodoo monkey, so I decided to give them a try for my next tattoo. I emailed one of the owners and he was quite short with me and didn't really answer my questions. I don't like to base my opinion off of one person so I contacted another artist there, John. I emailed him in November, I've been up to the shop, he said he would have my sketch ready multiple times; it is now February and I still don't even have a sketch. I called at least three times and was told that he'd call me back and he hasn't. I happened to reach him once via phone because I called while he was there. I don't quite know what happened, but this is beyond sad! I expected a high level of customer service, or at least a response, especially from a place that's made the Cleveland hotlist. I can't speak on their art work because I never got the chance to get what I contacted them for. I will never go back to voodoo monkey and would not recommend that anyone go there either, if they asked me. It was a major waste of time. I'm a little confused about how they made the hotlist, especially if they treat customers the way they did me. I guess that'll just be an enigma... read more

This is my 2nd tattoo at Voodoo Monkey Tattoo. This time was lightyears better than the first. Upon arriving, the guy working the front desk looked confused when I said I had an appointment with Eric. Awesome. Did I mess my appointment up? No. He mumbled his way through the official things he needed to say. He was definitely hard to hear so I had to ask him to repeat himself numerous times. Not very hospitable if you ask me. He didn't even tell me his name, or at least that he wasn't the guy going to give me the tattoo. Once that was over, Eric, the actual artist, came over and we discussed the location and price of the tattoo. I quikcly felt at ease - that he cared about what he was doing. The tattoo itself took about an hour. Eric did a great job. He wasn't overly chatty or awkwardly silent. I felt cared for as he asked every now and then how I was doing. Tattoo artists: Listen to your clients. Tried this place out since it had a lot of positive reviews and wanted something different. My other tattoos are larger and I wanted a very small fine line tattoo. When I called the shop I was told they could do that. Made an appointment. Got to my appointment on time and was not in the booth for another 45 minutes. Told the artist multiple times what I wanted, and where, and the artist did not listen to me at all despite my reference photo and my showing them where I wanted the tattoo to go. Even while in the booth. Made my tattoo much bigger than what I requested, stenciled the tattoo on upside down the first time, so I made the artist redo it. Redid the stencil and it was in the wrong place inches from where I told them and at that point I just wanted to get it over with. My partner was there and saw the whole thing go down. Now, I have a tattoo that I hate and have been upset for days. I can't even look at it without crying. My partner believes the artist was under the influence during my appointment considering how simple my tattoo was supposed to be. read more

I have had two tattoos done here, both were beautiful, but when I asked Natalie to schedule me for another one, she told me she was being selective about which tattoos she is willing to spend her time on and my tattoo did not make the cut. That was frustrating and irritating but I moved on to Nelson and asked him to schedule me. His response was I had to drive all the way there (a 40 minute drive for me) because he wanted me to give him a deposit and we needed to "discuss" my tattoo. I wrote him back and explained it was too far to drive just for a 5 minute consultation and that I was already confident of where my tattoo would go and the size and maybe had 5 minutes of questions regarding color, etc. and could he please just give me an appointment, he decided to just ignore me. So ... Voodoo Monkey will not get anymore business from me. Fortunately, I found another artist who seems just as skilled and is much more accommodating. read more
