Walked to Vons during my lunch break at work. I find this Vons somewhat different from the previous trips. Mainly because the hours which I now shop are different here. Previously, I would either go early in the morning before I went in to work or in the evenings when I need to grab something on a holiday. Now, going at noon is different or maybe this is the new normal here. First, yes, transients to hang out outside the entrance. Maybe I didn't know this before because I always drove here. It reeks of urine. Security is at the entrance. Strangely, they don't greet you, smile at you, or make eye contact. I guess its because they're not greeters?? Not going to knock on them though, because I've seen them straight snatch goods from shoplifters who attempt to leave the store without paying. Glad they do this, not like I've seen at Ross where they just watch the shoplifters take stuff then just make a note that the store got lifted. Carts are inside the store, near Starbucks. Shopping baskets are usually near the elevator. I didnt bother looking this time and just used my reusable bag to shop. Self checkout is always a lifesaver. I get in and out quickly, especially when items scan correctly and my Vons Club is synchronized. I used to have issues with my Vons Club card because the app was terrible. The current upgraded app is so much better and user friendly. Friday deals are the best and I like seeing the savings. Today's Friday deals: $5 for Oscar Mayer bacon, normally $12.99. This Vons had it in stock. My local Vons usually runs out very early. Another steal that was in stock: $1.75 for a bag of avocados, which includes 7 hass avocados. Today there was an incident inside the store where 4-letter words and MF's were hurled between the patrons. I legit quickly tried to get out of there. Neighborhood here is downtown, so there are the tourists/visitors from out of town, then you have your regular Vons clientele. Sometimes they clash. read more

I'm often in this store, as it's a few blocks from my place and I walk in for a few items. Now, a couple of the regular employees there are friendly; however, my experiences with most others seem to be that they are just greatly DISintetested in being there, also talking amongst themselves vs with the customer in front of them. Also, usually when I'm in there on a Fri or Sat eve, after say 8pm, they'll sometime only have one, two check stands open max and I've literally seen lines that run down the isles, almost to the back of the store. Those times, liquor was included in my purchases, so I could not use self-checkouts. Additionally, the prices are SKY-high in this location and lately, it seems like they don't care to set their A/C enough for it to be COOL in there, it's been VERY warm lately inside and I feel sorry for the employees having to work in those conditions. My go to downtown store - it's pretty decent, but Vons in general are a bit overpriced. There's free parking here which is key for downtown LB. Prices vary, but I've found some great sales here. I've seen cuts of sirloin/steak on sale for $4.99/lb, which I tend to pick up. There's health food items which can be tough to find at other places (coconut aminos, etc.). I'll walk here in a pinch, but typically get most of my groceries elsewhere just because of the higher prices. read more

This place is a disgrace. I've noticed several comments stating how difficult it is not to come here because it is within walking distance for many people, such as myself. However, over the years, frustration has increased with every experience. 1) slow motion - lines are are always extremely long with minimal cashiers. No sense of urgency. Total disregard for customer's time when the lines reach into the shopping isles. 2) alcohol section - the prices are not only high for alcohol, but everything. More concerning, is how many times you have to press the bell to get staff's attention. The last time I purchased liquor I was given an attitude for waiting more than 10 mins to be helped. 3) coin star - I went to exchange some change for cash at the coinstar inside of vons the first week of February 2024z. The line was extremely long, per usual. Yet this time longer than usual. Since it was only a $20 exchange, I decided to come back less than a week later. I paid for about $40 worth of groceries on my debit card, and then attempted to Cash for the change I had exchanged less than a week prior. I was then told that I could t because it had to be done the same day. I processed to call the number on the back and was told that it was the establishments decision, because they gave me a code to return and redeem the following day. My overall gripe, is that this Vons does nothing to optimize efficiency and speed up the process. In fact, it seems like everything is done as slow as possible to create inconveniences. I have spent thousands of dollars in this store over the years, and to be inconvenienced and refused a $20 exchange of my own money, that they are already getting a percentage of was, and is the last straw for me. I would encourage others to seek other places to shop. One thing I can guarantee, is that you will encounter a bad experience, or bad experiences constantly at this store. I had stopped coming here after I wrote my review because the store was just pitiful. I went back last week because I needed coffee for Thanksgiving morning and I didn't feel like dealing with holiday traffic. I went back again today because I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw last week and I hoped that my holiday spirit wasn't playing tricks with my eyes. It appears that store management is trying to step it up. Hopefully the Yelp helped. The store is so much brighter because they have turned up the lights. Perhaps the lighting has helped elevate the moods of the employees, because they seem much friendlier than before. I'll have to get back to you regarding pissy produce guy, though. Basically I'm annoyed with the deli department. They work hard but here's some issues that happen almost every time I come in. Plenty of people working but having to wait for one of them to finally help the line. Sometimes it's a minute or two, other times it can be 5 minutes+. They'll have great looking chicken but then move that to get to the really disgusting older chicken. I get rotating but they should have standards. I'm not paying deli prices for skin removed/dry old chicken. I've made it into a game at this point. I'll find the nastiest peace and without fail, that'll be the first peace they take. But I really don't like coming to the Vons in Long Beach, I always make it a point to drive out of my way to pick up food for my family or my company. I don't usually go to Vons but today I did because it's one of the closer grocery stores to my home. I got my beer and bean dip and I saw no one standing in line so I went underneath the barrier to get rung up and Glen the cashier decides to call me out in front of everyone "sir sir there's a barrier for a reason and you completely bypassed it" . So I go "yeah I saw no one standing in line so I figured Id just dip underneath " glen goes "sir you have to wait to be called up" I go " alright so you want me to go ALL the way around and stand there to be called. Gotcha" I didn't know there was a screen that told customers which cashier to go to since I rarely ever go to a vons. So...i wait Glen calls me up He starts ringing up my beer and bean dip And then some guy with a bunch of groceries is standing right behind me all of a sudden as I'm doing my transaction and I don't see Glen yell at him. Didn't say a word... Glen, don't yell at your customers in front of everyone like they know the process at your store and if you are ...at least be consistent so you don't make yourself look like an ass. This is the most accessible grocery store near me, so I often have no other choice but to come here, it's never been great, but it's horrible now. I'm not going to speak much on the "ambiance" because it's a grocery store in downtown Long Beach, you can't expect it to be anything other than chaotic. That's not the issue. My first big issue is the price gouging. A good example is soups I used to buy here were about $5 a pack, they took them away for a few months and they came back at $12.99 a pack. I know inflation is a thing, but they're about $7 at Ralph's on 4th. The pricing here is predatory. My second big issue is the quality control. Make sure to inspect your produce really thoroughly and do not get produce that's packaged in bags. There's a really good chance it will be moldy (I got an onion, and it was black on the inside when I sliced it open the same day). Check the expiration dates! I'm really happy I thought to check yesterday (Sept 8) because the lunch meat I was about to buy expired in early august. Some of the employees here are lovely. Most of them seem annoyed if you have a question, but that's neither here nor there. I feel really silly leaving a review on Von's but this location is getting out of hand and they clearly don't care about the community they serve. Go to Ralph's on 4th if you're able. They're more affordable (though not cheap, but nothing is these days), their products are high quality and the staff is all fantastic. read more

Slightly annoyed I mean grocery prices are stupid everywhere so why would Vons be any different. My only pain point is the wording of "deals" around the store. I really wish they would be specific enough that I wouldn't have to find out the FINE PRINT of it all. This has nothing to do with the workers or even this particular store. This is about a companies inability to clearly state that certain items are apart of the deal that they are advertising. I grabbed a fruit bowl (the prepackaged ones) and the tags said buy two get one free of equal or lesser value. To me that means should include the giant salad bowls that are also in the display case. I got three fruit bowls so I should've definitely been ok, right? Wrong it only meant watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melons. Returned to this Downtown location after over a year because I like their sushi selection. That was a huge mistake on my part. Items not in stock even if website claims they are. Handicapped electric carts are all but gone. They had 7 but now down to ONE because the homeless stole the other 6 and can't seem to get new ones ordered. Outside dirty and full of homeless people and tents in the rear of the store. Men's bathroom disgusting. toilet was arm deep in shit, like a group of homeless came in one after another and crapped without flushing. No running water in the sink. Complained to Manager. She is obviously not ready or equipped to handle her store and her position in management. This store needs to be closed. There is a reason why it called "GHETTO VONS". Went to the store to get food. The security guard was nice cause he saw me walking around looking for what to eat from my vacation. He recommended wings. I am not good with situations of talking to random people. I went back a few hours later for more food. He started talked to me again, I answer his question and walked away but he followed me all the way outside. He kept talking and I don't know how to tell people that I don't wanna talk. This place is ridiculous! Definitely needs to replace the store director. Obviously he/ she is incapable of handling the store effectively. It has 6 registers but only 2 are open and even when the lines extend down the isles, do you think a manager opens another register? NOPE. The two stars are only for the fact that this Vons is conveniently located with rooftop parking, six self checkout lanes and the staff is friendly (most of the time). That's where the good news ends. This place never keeps its shelves stocked! You can ask my fiancé, every time we go to this store I can be found repeatedly saying "this Vons sucks," and "I hate this Vons" ...he gets annoyed. There's nothing more frustrating when you're trying to get everything you need for a recipe and they don't have 2 out of the 6 things on your list simply because whoever is in charge of the ordering can never seem to get it right! If you need something quick, and very basic (but no guarantees! they were out of sour cream yesterday!) then you might be safe coming here. I cannot say enough good things about our neighborhood Vons and especially about Denise Hahn incredible staff. My husband is extremely disabled and this is our store and he's there couple of times a week on his mobility scooter. Everyone there is so kind and courteous and helpful and they make sure that he is taken care of that he can reach things get what he needs and get in and out of the store safely we are so grateful. Denise and her crew are amazing. Her daily post on Instagram are so helpful. Came to this Vons on April 2, 2020 Thursday, to do a money pick up from Western Union, Adrian assisted me, he said there's not enough money to issue me the amount I'm receiving.. so I left my number with him to call me when they do have enough money from customers so that I can come back to pick up my money at a later time rather than waiting here. That was when Zach, Told me about this place right around the corner that has Western Union. Zach Gave me the name of the place including the cross streets, I went there right after I left Vons. It was exactly where Zach said it would be, they were open and they have Western Union, I was able to pick up my money transfer there. Adrian and Zach went out of their way to help me, these two young men are most considerate, friendly, respectful human beings! read more

I don't normally leave reviews but this is about expired creamer that should have been pulled off the shelf 2 and a half weeks before I bought it. I don't know how anyone can miss 2 weeks of not looking at dates. It shouldn't be the customers job to check dates. I learned my lesson of course. But I also tried reaching out to ask about a refund since I tossed the receipt. No answer whatsoever. They need to do better here. I gave 2 stars because it's mostly clean whenever I go there. It would even be 3 stars but I'm upset because coffee and creamer is a big part of my mornings so I'm disappointed. I would only go here as a last resort. They are way too overpriced as it is, maybe there wouldn't be expired food if they lowered their prices during these hard times. read more
