Filthy, filthy, filthy store. The exterior is terrible, strong smell of urine. The sidewalk has not been steam cleaned in over a year. There is trash all the time. Beggars abound, one is harassed coming and going to the market. The guard is useless in monitoring the exterior. This place should be condemned for being a health hazard. Their produce depart is stocked with the lowest quality, old limp produce produce, the variety of vegetables is pathetic. We've never seen such limp loose carrots. Same with the fruit department, disappointing select with high prices. Over all a limited selection of grocery items . Meat prices are high and poor quality. Again limited selection. Buyers beware. The staff are really nice and friendly so this review is absolutely not a reflection of them. This place is so bad that even with super friendly staff, it gets a 1 star. This is a grocery store with food.. yet cleanliness is not up to standard. It filthy and smells horrible. They allow homeless people to hang out in front of the store and do drugs blatantly in the open. The quality of the produce is C rate at best. Forget getting good quality seafood, don't even try. Many foods don't have organic options. Honestly, the prices are VERY steep for the quality. It doesn't make sense. This place only exists because there isn't much else in the area that is anything better, and that is shame. It seems like management does the bear minimum to operate instead of trying to create the most optimal customer and shopping experiences. It is tough leaving this review because the staff that work there are phenomenal, always friendly, and helpful. This is about the amount of dogs in this facility. Every time I go in there, there's dogs on almost every aisle. I don't know why such an unsanitary act is so excepted at this location. So it's Grand Prix weekend in Long Beach. Millions of dollars are poured into the city and some of it goes to Vons grocery store three blocks away from the event.I'm standing in line for one of two cash registers open. There are 10 people in line ahead of me. Unbelievable that they would be this short staffed on a night like this. I gave up twice trying to get meat from the meat counter. First the service was slow, then they said I'll be with you shortly and they washed out a giant pot before they deigned to talk to me. So why not one star? When the projected time for pick-up had passed without an update I consulted their customer support and customer service numbers for an hour just for them to tell me the only thing they could do was to cancel my order. This is possibly the worst grocery store in the world. The parking lot is on a second floor and it's a hassle to get to because you have to go up and down an elevator with your groceries. The store is highly understaffed, and whenever I am in here outside of like 10-8 business hours the lines out are huge to get checked out. Also they close their self-check outs after a certain hour, which makes no sense because one cashier can monitor like 8 checkouts just as easy as one can operate a single check out. read more

They're understaffed, which makes it pretty hard to get assistance when you need it. One of their barcodes or promotions not working on self checkout? Be prepared to wait for the employee working at the service desk to finish up what they're doing, because often the Service Desk and Self Checkout are worked by the same person. I could live with that, though, if not for the consistent issues I've had with their Dairy-Deli. Buying Milk, Yogurt, or anything else cold, dairy and prone to expiration? Then check the dates! On one night alone, 2 out of 5 of the dairy items I bought were expired -- one by an entire month! I've purchased the Danimals six packs at least twice just to get home and find that they're a week or two expired. It just goes to show how just one weak department can completely sour your experience with a store. read more

It's been 6 years since I wrote my last review of this store and sadly they've not changed and in some ways gotten worse. None of the things I mentioned in my original post have changed in the slightest even after the store manager contacting me personally. Self checkout is more of a hassle than going through checker checkout. They have 1 person to help 8 lanes and that person also has to attend the customer service desk, answer the phone, and help other customers. They are so concerned that they are going to lose 10 cents from bags that whenever you bring your own bags and declare that on the checkout screen you'll have to wait for that person to verify you have your bags and the screen will not allow you to continue until they have. When they're helping people at the service desk you'll just have to wait. This happens every single time I go and you'll continuously see people stand there with the red light flashing waiting for help. Many times there are other employees standing there talking with them and they'll not even notice the red lights. I'm always stunned by how unconcerned the "attendants" are in the self checkout. They never apologize and will always odd excuses and are in no hurry to help. The vast majority of the time I have to ask them to clear the screen, verify my bags, or let them know I need help because they are not paying attention even while there is a line. They rarely have hand baskets by the street door and you'll need to walk around the the stairs and hope there are baskets there or you'll need to search the checkout lines to see if there are any there. They state that people steal them; however, there is a permanent security guard standing at the door going to the street so it's either and excuse not to attend to the needs of their customers or the security guard isn't doing their job. Now dogs are allowed to walk the store and among the food that is out in the open with no limitations from chihuahuas to huskies. read more

i frequent this Vons because it is the only grocery store near my studio. Yes, some of the employees are annoying like the cahsier who pushes the groceries back down the belt only to have the belt bring it right to where it was at in the first place.... the deli is always a bit understaffed.... but my biggest and really most meaningful gripe is that they allow non service dogs in the place. WHATS UP WITH THE DOGS!!!!! There is a sign that says the establishment allows service dogs and other dogs are not allowed but folks have their dogs sniffing and peeing all in the store... it is a nuisance that needs to be addressed. Worst. Grocery. Store. Ever. When you approach the entrance of Von's, there's a 50/50 chance there's someone outside that will scream obscenities at you. Despite having a "security guard" at the entrance, the corner Von's constantly has some unstable and/or homeless hanging out within 2-3 feet of the door. The store itself is fine enough, despite kind of a crappy selection of certain things. Produce is pretty hit or miss, as is seafood. But then you get to the real reason everyone complains about Von's: the lines from hell. Bless your poor soul if you want to buy alcohol, because you'll be waiting in line for at least 10 minutes (and that's if you're really lucky). I'm not exaggerating when I say I've seen people take videos on their phone of how long the lines are on an average day. The self-checkout line isn't that much better, but at least move quickly. The self-checkout registers are horribly designed and constantly lock up (requiring someone to dismiss whatever alert you just set off). Save money and your sanity and go to Ralph's instead. read more

This location is not without its challenges; it's a big grocery store in a heavily populated, urban area so the parking lot is on the roof, accessible from Atlantic. Got bagels here this morning for the office. Jalapeño and cheese was insanely awesome. Typical Vons version has 4 slices of jalapeños laid across the top every 90°. This Long Beach Vons version had mass amounts of rough chopped jalapeño slices, jammed into the hole of the bagel and cheese on top. It was pretty great. Nice lay out, everything flows pretty much like many of the renovated supermarkets and, parking on the roof and taking the elevator down is great since the parking around the store is nill and, like I said before "you took you life in your hands in the old lot." I was in a rush but, I will definitely come back especially for their fresh and reasonably priced vegetables and specials that rival Fresh and Easy Market (I don't have to bag my groceries either). As opposed to Stephanie F's review I did not see Keisha and Shiquanda get into a fight and start a weave pulling fight; perhaps that only happens on certain days! Call it a God shot or what you like but on my way away from the register I heard someone shout "Hello, are you Lyle's son?" Vons has the same sister company as Pavillions and Safeway (I'm pretty sure there are more sister stores, but these are the ones I have come across). I came here with my boyfriend to pick up a couple items to bring to his sister's place. We were going to cook at her new place. Long Beach is notorious for limited parking and I'm glad that this Vons was able to accommodate a roof top parking garage! The garage can probably fit up to 50 cars and the parking spots are 2 hour limits. There's an elevator (and stairs) available to transport you to the grocery store level. Inside, the Vons pretty much looks cookie cutter as Safeway. Same ol' set up and features. The grocery store is pretty clean and the produce seemed fresh. I liked the fact that Vons was able to carry Dave's Killer Bread (from Portland, OR). I knew that Safeway did and it was nice that their other sister stores carried the bread as well. If you have a rewards card with the other sister stores, it can work for Vons as well. I probably won't be shopping here too frequently since I'm not in the area, but would be back here if I needed something and this place was right up my alley. read more

After playing briefly in the sand, I took a Saturday morning drive into downtown just to walk around sans crowd. Of course, I was up too early for organized thinking so all the randomness sent me all around town, which was a good thing because stuff has changed. Did I tell you they were shooting a commercial on Saturday? Upon seeing city hall, I realized I needed to pay my utilities only to realized that I had no checkbook. And after putting 2 hours into the meter, I figured I could get a money order and not have to drive all over town since I was already close to the drop box. I took a quick walk over to Vons, and it was gone. But there was this huge honking New Vons in its place. Wow. It was so grand it looked like the entrance to a hotel lobby. By the way, money orders are 0.89 cents each. Not bad, I had a source for getting a money order but then I looked at their ATM and it's a "Vons" brand ATM so it charges a fee. I pulled out my handy phone and searched for the post office and set out on a new mission. The staff was nice and I did take a quick walk through. Super clean and it wasn't so busy. I only wish I had better planned my morning because I did need a few things but it was too hot to leave the stuff out in the car. But this will be a future stop for beach blanket lunch supplies. read more

Yes, I know the one 4th street is great but it's too small for me. Finally, the newly remodeled Vons opened and it is everything you could hope from from a grocery store. Deli Butcher Hot foods Bakery Pharmacy And lots more... they went all out and finally our community has a grocery store that we can shop at without fear of being assaulted. This place is so hit or miss; either between the customers or the people working here. Is just like super nasty.. The surrounding neighborhood an such is very like "Great Gatsby" with a similarly named hotel nearby called "The Gatsby." The themes of that book are the general atmosphere of this place; unfortunately... This is often very stifling an portrayed through many interactions of many people here, customer and employee.. If you're unfamiliar.. That book starts with a quote saying "The best a woman could want is to be stupid and beautiful." Like between the aggressive weird gay men with wine pushing their shopping carts at me - the weird people trying to unnecessarily assert right of way to feel marginally important, the overreacting jealous couples, an the trust fund homelessness contrast establishing hierarchy... etc... The good can be really uhm.... Difficult to remember; like a lady moving her cart out of my way an such... Who even that person - did that unnecessarily.. Which makes me wonder if people who shop here just generally have a weird sense of spatial awareness. People here are like the type to get in your way to force you to talk to them an is so uncomfortable... So I just insult them so, they don't like... talk to me.. Like I just want my groceries when I go here but, like people here seem to go here for more than groceries... Like not to say I wouldn't mind talking to a person but, I've really yet to experience a significant quantity of interactions here that aren't like seemingly hard fought or like... Fraught with like questionable passive aggression... Like even people who work are the Starbucks here have yelled ho at me as I've walked in... So I'm like.. Oh, whore, can I get a soy latte? Is just like... A really gross negative place... Like I wonder if is much to do with the lack of natural lighting? Though I've shopped at places like this with more natural lighting so, is doubtful... Good feels so like fleeting an uncommon here relative to the number of really unfortunate interactions resembling great displeasure. This place really leaves a lot to be desired. Like I prep myself for bullshit before going here.. I can ride my bike to here too though an try to avoid like... "Busy hours." So like a Monday at like noon or one PM or like... Like is trying to revitalize a narrow road; giving an impression of bustling when really, there is just an artificial scarcity of space. For cash currency... This place generally is just super gendered an awkward to me. Sorry to say really, like; I feel really condemning for this.. The good though; there is parking with an interesting view as is roof parking. A diverse array of groceries... Also unlike other local markets not in the really like "affluent thai district" the shelves are stocked out of their cardboard packaging for less than like El Super that sells cranberry juice for more than here. This place also generally gets better quality or diverse range of food items.. Like El Super gets pita bread that didn't fully rise an sells for like 0.69$ where as This place gets pita bread that fully rose for like... 1.50$ Also has a good vegan section. Also random sales on vegan food that I've yet to decipher the reason for. Ugh, today a bunch of drunk people went shopping an I lost my earin headphone recharge capsule here after a guy called me a hoe.... Like this place is seriously - the worst customers.. Hands down... Review in progress: I have so much trash to talk on this establishment that I am going to write it in chunks over the course of a few weeks... The staff - no one works at this store. The Lucerne products - they litter the store, they take up space where there should be cheese and milk, butter and cottage cheese. The Lucerne milk taste funny, like water, powder, and something else. The Lucerne "cheese" is terrible, and is often the only cheese they offer. The produce - is overpriced and going bad. The bakery - is overpriced and already stale. The floor - is dirty. The Starbucks - lacks the charm of even the crappiest doughnut store. Use a damn broom at least once a month! The prices - here is where the single star comes in. Vons knows that this is one of the only stores in the area, and that they can charge you more because of this. And so they do, with everything. If something is the price it is supposed to be, it is because it is going bad, or they are overstocked in it. If beer is on sale, it is old and skunky. If produce is on sale, it is starting to rot. If meat is on sale, it will make you sick. And so on, like this for everything. My car - I have a car, I use it to get the hell out of this neighborhood whenever I need groceries. I am blessed and lucky. But what if you don't have a car? What if this is your only venue for groceries? You would just about have to shop here, and that is upsetting. This store isn't good enough to keep you well nourished, and certainly isn't good enough to raise a family on. I wouldn't dare give children food from this store. But if you can't afford a car, then this is it. You f'in suck Vons, your business strategy is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourselves, taking advantage of immobile people by over-charging them for third-rate product. I stop in daily after my morning workout and there are always very nice and friendly employees .I never leave the store empty handed..Great location and parking is up a ramp which is kind of strange but they have escalators and elevators that will get you downstairs to the store entrance. They open as early as 6:00 am and there is also a Starbucks located inside for the people that like to get their coffee and tea cravings. read more

Yes, this Vons is old, tattered and torn. Instead....I choose to refer to this Vons as a 'vintage' shopping experince. Visiting here is really a glimpse back at a time that is simpler and gentler...1975. Nothing in this store (including the produce, customers and staff) has been updated. The speckled linoleum, the rusty carts and dusty old abandoned cars in the lot with cracked pavement are all remnants of times past. While I'm on my way to work I can stop here in the morning and get some basics for cubicle survival. The wait at the cashier is always short because no one shops here. Holy cow!!!! What a huge difference. No more crackhead Vons!! Each time I go there I spend over two hours. Everyone shopping there is so happy and excited about the change. And the employees are no exception. As soon as I walk in a lady with a huge smile greets me. I walk by the deli counter and they ask if I would like to sample anything. One day I asked the deli lady if she could recommend an appetizer for a party, she gave me a sample of pasta salad. I walked away and was looking at other choices, she actually came up to me and asked if I still needed help trying to find an appetizer...WTF?! That is so cool! She seemed completely sincere in wanting to help. I love it! I love the Bright Green brand that they carry. I wish they had the paper towels, but at least they have the napkins and toilet paper (all made from 100% recycled fibers). I also love their Organics food products.
