Cashier said sorry we don't sell till another 5 min. I asked To speak to the manager who's names Was Daniel and he was completely rude . Had no explanation. Two stars because it's a pretty big Vons and used to come here a lot when living in La Mesa. I'm not sure what the deal is with self check out these days but when you have two employees standing and observing self check out, it makes absolutely no sense??? We got denied to go into a line to check out with a cart full of groceries so they could have two people standing watching people bag their own groceries. Will never be shopping at this Vons again. Clean store, but no self checkout, no cash back for ApplePay, and basically always has solicitors harassing you in front of the entrance. I do pickup regularly and the courtesy clerks are awesome. My only complaint is the app saying certain things are out of stock for long periods of time. I kinda feel like if I went into the store they would have it. The Hormel mashed potatoes have been "out of stock" for months. What's up with that? I'm giving a solid 3 stars mainly because I really hate how they only have one door to get in and out. So the location is the normal size for a grocery store. The prices are pretty high compared to other grocery stores in the area. They have a Starbucks inside which is nice for all you coffee nuts! I just visited Vons on University Ave in La Mesa at 11pm. The garlic in Antipasti Bar was 50% moldy on top. I can't imagine how things look behind closed door. This is my grocery store and it made me very sick to see the lack of care and cleanliness of food handling in this store. Are they handling poultry & meat correctly???? I hate vons. The small one by my house I often go to and can't find what I need and then I try this location but too many times they too lack what I need. Their selections are poor and the produce is subpar. All lettuce today was wilted and gross. The registers are always understaffed with long lines. Today I filled my bag with some stuff, realized I had to go to another store anyway because of the stuff vons doesn't have, and tried to wait in a line to pay. Realized because of the time it was taking I didn't have time to do other stuff, dumped out my items and left to go to another store. Thanks for wasting my time again vons. Placed home delivery order- $200, #4672030609, to be delivered July 20, 3-4PM. Received notice order was being assembled at 2 PM. That's the last I heard. It is now 4.15 PM. Telephone not being answered; after 20 rings, disconnected. Chat service can only tell me order is being assembled. Same thing with Customer Service. Home delivery has absoltely disappeared with no update or communication at all. Shameful display of incompetence, with no updates whatsoever. read more

The store is so conveniently leave out it's never difficult to find anything. The staff cashiers and even the very semi self service line moves very quickly here. Parking is more than ample for all of the businesses that are supported in this area and the Starbucks in the store helps making the shopping easier! read more

I really despise this store. I hate the feeling of being tricked when shopping. Sure, they have a great selection but you have to be so careful about prices. You can get a great deal on certain items but you must by 5 or more. What? For most people that are in a hurry, you don't even study each price tag. You can't take any alcohol thru the self check out even though theirs a person standing there doing nothing. Why can't she check ID to keep things moving? Lousy baked goods. This is the second time this has happened (I gave them a second chance). Their cream pies seem to be mostly just whipped cream filling. 13 bucks is a lot to pay for all that whipped cream. I'm not a big fan of this location. There are always solicitors outside the store. There are a lot of sketchy people hanging out around the outside of the store and it's just filthy by the entrance walkway. I don't think it would be THAT hard for Vons to clean up the outside area. For as many years as my mom has owned her house nearby, it has always been grungy. Now that so many of the Vons stores have closed, this is kind of the only option left nearby. That's pretty sad. It's not so terrible inside. It's dated, yes, but clean for the most part. The last couple trips I made, they were out of red bell peppers. Wth Vons? I was shopping for my mom who had just had surgery and she had given me a list of items she wanted. I asked the produce clerk and he just shrugged and said "yeah, we didn't get any." No kidding dude. I can see that. Not all the people who work here are super helpful. It's interesting that they now make the tortilla chips in the deli since they were bought by Albertsons, but not the guacamole. What's up with that? How can you sell fresh chips without the guacamole. It's just weird. This store has a very small deli area compared to other stores. It almost feels cramped in comparison to the bakery, which is huge. And I don't get their pricing on eggs at all. It's completely ridiculous. They have to be the highest priced store I've seen. Weirder still, the already boiled eggs were cheaper. I would probably still come here for specific items maybe, but no way on the produce. Sprouts has them beat by a mile. read more

Too bad I can't give this store zero stars. It has always been horrible - especially the customer service (or lack thereof). Today was the worst. So many customers and staff were not wearing masks, I was scared to death to be in the place. Finally, I went to the customer service counter to ask for a manager and she approached me with no mask in sight. Some of the staff in the back at least had masks under their nose and/or under their chin (what's the point of that?) but she didn't have one at all. I didn't bother to lodge my complaint (not worth dying for) and just left the store. Staff and managers have always been particularly callous and unresponsive at this store but this is beyond everything - not to mention operating illegally and with complete disregard to their customers. Horrible customer service and the employees are very rude.Never any shopping carts available and employees will not help you find a cart. Yesterday on July 3rd I witnessed an employee using profanity to a customer that was asking for assistance. Not sure what the employees name is but she is a young Hispanic girl in her 20's with long dark hair. Totally unacceptable. This is your standard Von's store. I believe they carry more baked goods than most other locations but I could be wrong. They have a lot of really interesting regulars too. So the people watching is on point. Most veggies here are pretty good and well stocked. They have a large organic section too. As for beer, good amount of local craft beers and also wines. read more

I had someone in dirty clothes behind me, who was lesser than 1/2 that distance. I came here for groceries on a Sunday because I didn't feel like going to Walmart and dealing with all the crowdedness. It was a long Saturday night, and needless to say, I was quite hungover. It was nice to see that there were no shopping carts in parking spots (usual issue with Walmart). When I first walked in the door I caught a strong whiff of the deli and thought "Man, I gotta get something on my way out." I went aisle for aisle getting everything I needed without having to deal with any empty shelves, hellion children, or narrow aisles. With my cart full, I made my way to the deli. I was greeted by a wonderful man that I wish I had the name of. He explained the pricing, and was patient when my wife couldn't decide what she wanted. When I went ahead and ordered a pound of mango habanero pork ribs, the man gladly grabbed a box, grabbed each rib and individually rubbed each one in extra sauce. Just as I was about to complete my order they informed me that it's not recommended to get such delicious ribs with no sides. They recommended the macaroni salad, and told me to put some pepper on it when I got home. I then made my way to the checkout and didn't have to worry about there not being enough registers open. People were super friendly, asked me how everything was, and even had their own input on the mango habanero ribs and how delicious they are. I got to my car, loaded up my groceries, and RETURNED MY CART LIKE A TRUE AMERICAN! Sat down behind the wheel, cranked up some Tasha Cobbs on the radio, and went to town on my ribs right there in the parking lot. Wrote this review despite the fact that I got sauce on my fingers, and not gonna lie, I don't have a spoon for my macaroni but I went ahead and dug me a handful of that right out of the container. I used the order online service and have for the most part been impressed with this service at this store. The store has plenty of open time slots and groceries are ready on time. I've ordered online several times and have been happy with the service given the current situation. However, today 5/13 at 4 pm I picked up my online order (order was even ready early) and noticed that all items that should have been frozen had already thawed by the time I got home. I live 10 minutes away, so there is no way the frozen items could have thawed that quickly. Are employees leaving groceries that need a freezer or a refrigerator outside with the rest of the groceries? Isn't this a health violation as items that need to be frozen or refrigerated pose a health risk? Shouldn't mangers at Von's train employees on how to properly store groceries before pickup? Lastly, will Von's be responsible if someone gets sick for improper handling of food items? I just don't understand... how hard is it to have this done correctly. read more

I normally live my local Vins in La Mesa, but today everyone there was in a mood. I was never asked if I needed help, I said hi to a black worker and he didn't speak back, and I am black. When I went to the customer counter, the manager was short, curt and sort of rude. I wasn't asked if I needed help considering I bought a ton of stuff. I just had a bad experience this time. Just to clarify, this is a review of the pharmacy, specifically. Every time I think this pharmacy can't get any worse, it does. I switched most of my prescriptions to the fricking Walmart Neighborhood Market pharmacy because they were more efficient (aka, didn't have their heads up their butts). When Walmart is doing a better job, you're in trouble! But I noticed I still had a refill on a prescription at Von's and called it in. Mistake. There is never more than one pharmacy clerk, no matter how long the line gets. And it gets really long when they are spending 20 minutes telling some poor old lady that no, her medications aren't ready. That's the biggest thing here...you call in your prescriptions, are told they will be ready, show up, and they aren't. Sometimes there's been a 'hold' placed on them, but no one will tell you why. And for sure, no one will apologize. So I had to only wait 5 minutes behind today's poor old lady who couldn't pick up her medication. Get up there, clerk says my script isn't ready because they don't have my new insurance information. Great. I hand over my prescription card. She says, no, it expired in December of 2017. Huh? No one else has said that. But I cleaned out my purse recently, maybe I screwed up. I look through my purse, say I will be back later in the week, and leave and look though any possible cards. I finally look at my current pharmacy card. My card says PRINTED 12/04/17, which is why Walmart pharmacy has not had a problem accepting it. But the clerk at Vons apparently cannot read and/or does not understand the difference between the words "PRINTED" and "EXPIRES". Calling my doctor's office this week to have this prescription changed to Walmart, as well. Jesus take the wheel! read more

In the wake of COVID 19 all stores are practicing precautions and guidelines to minimize infections and optimize the health of its employees who have to work. The problem is that all employees are NOT educated enough to know how to communicate concern and positive regard together. It is an oxymoron in the ever strained service industry where shopper after shopper goes in and out of lines. So it is inevitable that the lower base mentalities of ill informed employees and managers come out. Today Stacy K. at VONS #2093 at La Mesa Springs implied that a African American male wearing Personal Protective Medical equipment was a higher risk to her than the general public standing right in front of her wearing no PPE. I watched the whole thing happen as she requested social distancing -6 feet from an African-American male wearing a face mask and gloves going through the line-- even after he explained he was SENIOR Caregiver and at high risk himself. Meanwhile two latinas were in front of her with no protective equipment and no precautions. What made him so threatening? Furthemore, after explaining to her he was a HE!!! Stacy K. kept calling him, "Mam!!" It was tragic and inappropriate. When the Store Director: Dan Ledbetter arrived he was minimal assistance- as he also wanted to have the gentleman wait at the end of the conveyor belt while he was being checked out!! A review of the cameras will see no such precaution taken with any other customer. This was highly inappropriate and overkill. The African-American customer was being penalized for taking precautions for himself and his clients by staff at VONS Store # 2093. Stacy K. conveniently tried to hide her badge so people couldn't see who she was. I found out!!! This is being publicized because this kind of behavior cannot proliferate if we are to get through this madness in one piece!!!! read more

Absolutely ridiculous! This place always has a line, it's so annoying. I rarely come here except it's the only grocery in walking distance... Tonight was the absolute worst! I came in at 8:45 PM and there were 25 people in line, with one checker. I'm not even exaggerating, the line snaked all the way from the express lane to the beer isle. People were super angry. The manager was standing behind her counter with her hands in the air saying, "sorry, I only have one checker". Like we all don't know a manager can help check too. And what's with no self checkers?! All the other area stores have self checkers. This store is bogus and I'm not coming back. Haha they have the worst rating too, so I guess this review won't help, but at least it feels good to vent. I may seem ignorant here, but I didn't even know Vons existed until visiting San Diego. I usually come here because it's the closest grocery store to where I stay while visiting and can take a short walk from the house to here. After visiting this location a few times, I will agree with some of the reviews stating that there are solicitors outside this store. I feel like there is always someone outside soliciting. I do like the fact that their produce seem fresh and it's easy for me to find what I'm looking for and just need to get in and get out. The checkout areas can move fairly quick and we had a nice lady help out at the self checkout area once. I regret that I forgot her name because she was funny and made our checkout so much easier. I will admit that some of their sales are awesome! One of my friends got a steak for fairly cheap. He ended up paying half the price. The bakery area has some of the best looking items and can tempt anyone trying to be good. An OK place to shop and fairly close to other shopping areas. It's easy to walk to if you don't have a vehicle and close to public transportation. Just not a fan of soliciting and the parking can be a bit scary. read more

I used their online service one time on Valentine's Day and spent the evening shopping. They have an option to order the entire recipe and I did. I guess I didn't realize on my first order their idea of substitution was different than mine. The recipe called for 1 1/4lb of Salmon. They subbed 3oz of smoked salmon. I called support and they said "for future reference I would in check the substitution option". This store and online are off limited to me. This is the sub for a recipe to feed 4! read more

Wholly kamolly. This place is seriously atrocious. Selection is poor for pretty much all categories. Staff are unfriendly and unhelpful. There is ALWAYS a line - even at midnight on a Thursday, 9am Sunday or midday/midweek. Horrible layout so you are constantly going from one end to the other to find what you need (and you see many others doing the same). And perhaps this is not Vons' fault, but perhaps the environment enables this behaviour? Most shoppers are inconsiderate, loud and disrespectful. There is really no reason to shop here. read more

I only come to Vons if I need something ASAP because it's the closest one to my house. It's just as overpriced as all the other grocery stores in the area. The Commissary on the Naval Base still has the best prices, so I'll only come here if I forgot to put something on my long grocery list.
