I asked someone working at the desk/WU if they could open up a register to get people out of here and he said not now. Not anyone available. Went to Vons just now. It was 2 mins before closing time and the employees refused me at the door stating they were closed. They close AT 11. Got there at 10:58. Then there were two employees at the door talking and laughing it up. You literally just need one person at the door, very unprofessional! They were very rude, speaking to the manager tomorrow. Around 20 years ago, my first job was at a Vons. At that time, there was so much training and expectations of providing the highest customer service. 90% of the employees at this Vons would have been fired by the expectations of 20 years ago. We are a local family and have been loyal Vons shoppers until today. Getting service at the deli and the meat counter is more often than not as if you are a great inconvenience. I will say the bakery and produce department are wonderful. The very worst part of this store is check out. This store is the most expensive and you have to bag your own groceries. There is never a person a bagging. You're lucky if you don't have to do self Checkout and bag! I'm tired of paying more money for less service and dealing with mostly unfriendly people. Stater Brothers has multiple check stands open with smiling baggers and cheaper prices. Sorry, Vons, but your behavior has finally become unforgivable! read more

Always come here for sandwiches. However, came in on a busy Sunday and Kevin in the deli was running it all by himself. That man made me the best sandwich I've had made here. Very friendly staff here, plenty of firewood, and on busy snow days, be ready for a shortage of carts. The older gentleman ringing us up was fast, friendly, and efficient. When our Vons phone number didn't work, he had cards ready to give to us. The bagger was also friendly. read more

Particularly busy during holidays, weekends, and ski season. Still, they plan accordingly and buy right. 2. Live music. ============ Okay, it's not Van Halen nor the LA Philharmonic. It's super nice young people (high school?), 4-6 of 'em, seriously doing there thing. I've never seen this inside a market, anywhere. 3. Starbucks. =========== If the larger location is too far for you on the other side of the parking lot, this is your place. 4. Bargains. ========== Some things have the standard surcharge since it's 35+ miles up from Redlands or San Bernandino. But, there are plenty of things on special to offset the extra dinero. 5. Service. ========== This is a small town, and the service here reigns supreme. Super nice (even jolly) folks working the register, the bakery, the produce, the meat counter. Big Bear Vons was just the right size and had everything I need to stock my cabin fridge & pantry. Nice friendly deli service for cold cuts and cheese. Fresh meat dept. with beautiful cuts of bacon, and a nice produce dept. The parking was plenty and lines were quick on a Saturday at around 5:30pm. Masks still must be worn as of now. I did notice the isles have the directional arrows and I noticed the isles were a bit smaller than other Vons. Everybody that worked there was pretty nice. Overall the service was well with helpful staff some items were limited due to being Christmas holiday my husband and I managed to get everything for a week stay in Big Bear without braking our budget. The store felt a little over crowded felt like a Black Friday sale at a mall and besides observing some winning kids throwing temper tantrums throughout the store our experience at this Vons was well. Super understaffed but I understand the circumstances. There was a long line to get in to the store and an even longer line at the checkout stand. There were only two check stands open and an employee directing a line of people to both check stands. Some people who were in line just left their items on the ground to leave since they didn't want to wait longer which led to the employee who was leading the order of the line to grab items to restock. It was just really chaotic and I hope the employees are getting compensated well for dealing with impatient people. Otherwise the store appeared clean and everyone wore masks. read more

The people at vons are really great! My understanding is that the store is severely understaffed, and yet I always get a nice person at checkout. I'm sorry that the staff have to deal with so many rude people, notably flatlanders. I also really appreciate the Drive and Go service. It's disappointing that staff are no longer able to accept gift cards or tips for pickup orders because they always do a great job, whether in the hot sun, snow, or rain! Also, the baristas at the Starbucks are fantastic. The one guy who works there made me a drink even when he was supposed to be closing up. Lastly, for the person who complained that an order was placed a week prior and half the items were not in stock-- let's be real, when you tourists flood the mountain, do not expect to get your entire order. It's called supply/demand. You get an email of your final order and can see what items you didn't get, so you can prepare ahead and go somewhere else. With what's happening in the world it is unreasonable to expect to get everything in an order nowadays. The staff won't pull your items a week before you arrive and hold them for you. Perhaps shopping down below is a better solution for both you and the locals. read more

I am very upset with Vons in Big Bear Lake. Twice the same checker has told me to go to another line because it would be faster. The first time he sent me the check stand wasn't even open and today he sent me to an express line that was 15 items or less with 4 people ahead of me and I had at least 30 items. Thank goodness for the people that had been behind me in the original line. They let me get back in line ahead of them. Apparently he didn't want me in his line since they packed my groceries real heavy. I supplied 6 bags and they only used 4. One bag probably weighed 40 pounds. This individual and his wife (to the left of him) accosted me, repeatedly taking items out of my cart for no reason. I am certain because I'm black. In what world does someone dig into another individuals cart. I said nothing and replaced my items back into MY cart and she dug back into the cart and took them out again?? A few days prior, I moved my cart out of the way of an elderly man who to his credit said thank you, but then proceeded to talk my ear off about the "ruckus BLM" has been causing, again unprompted. This Vons is scary af and uncomfortable every time I'm there (usually on vacation from Los Angeles) so much so that my white bf always feels like he should walk the aisles w me. Best trip to the grocery store EVER! I know it sounds strange but the nicest, most helpful staff I have ever encountered not only at a grocery story but frankly anywhere. The Supervisor Mark was a blast! I have to slam the store for the ridiculous service they were dishing out all over the place. At check out today, Richard, the guy who is supposed to be ringing everything us announces his birthday is on Monday, to which the lady in front of me says, "Well you can have my cake!" She's about to buy a cake and now everyone on line - 3 people deep right now, realizes she also is an employee at the store. Now Richard leaves the register to go to the Starbucks counter to see if he can get himself a plate and fork. Now he finally returns and opens the cake box ... it is not his birthday, BTW - we are 5 days away from this guys birthday ... LOL - now he cuts himself a piece of cake and starts to eat it behind the register. And if this is not enough, now Richard and the other employee begin to look at photos on her phone and whisper to each other. Now there are 6 customers and one in a wheelchair waiting for service while Von's employees literally went on strike. After about 15 minutes, the abnoxious time sucker in front of me is not done - because after all her yapping, she never bagged her groceries and now she's trying to block me from getting bags to bag my groceries, that Dick is tossing in with this employee of Vons. Short shoulder length straight black hair. Anyway, enough is enough. I told her to get out of my way before I went full Karen on her. She then asks me what that means, as if she had no idea. I think her name IS Karen. Meanwhile Richard is eating cake and fondling all my groceries with his unwashed hands ... because he yells out, "It's all FAKE NEWS!" Because according to Richard, nobody need wash their hands anymore because it's all Fake News. And Richard also can't believe that Rocky is being sued by his maids for being abusive, cruel and cheap as a chicken. Just saying, I had to say something. It's like Vons has two employees on active strike inside the store - and I have a huge sense of humor, but I've seen better acts at the Kareoke bars up here. Vons, please have a class with your employees about how eating cake with your bare hands and then touching people's groceries can actually be an act of murder. It is so dangerous. We just got out of one pandemic - I know Richard is sure it's all Fake News, but for the rest of us who'd like to live past Richard's birthday, please educate this man on cleanliness and grocery store health code regulations - and the please include his BF employee of the month for passing out cake at the register ... where people are trying to get home without getting food poisoning. The Von's up here in Big Bear is probably the busiest Vons you're ever going to be in. But somehow all the employees are pleasant, helpful, and have such great attitude. Sometimes they run out of stock, but they are constantly working to keep the shelves full. The bakery is beautiful, deli is fresh and tasty. The staff working are always helpful and friendly. Always willing to say hi. The front checkout supervisors Sandi and Mark are some of the friendliest and upbeat people you will ever meet! Going to Vons in Big Bear on a weekend, can be annoying and stressful because of all the tourists and the lines can be ridiculously long sometimes. But know that they work hard to make your experience not as terrible as it could be! For those that are concerned, yes, all the staff wear masks still. One star is fair because the guys at the register are super friendly and helpful. But the prices are ridiculous!!! I thought the Vons in Echo Park was expensive but this place takes the cake. I understand that once you're up there you don't have much choice. There's a lower quality market across the street, or so I thought. I was happy to find beautiful looking produce, healthy looking meats, and a variety of other stuff my family likes. But when I started cooking, I cut off pounds of fat from my roast that was hidden on the underside of the meat. $6.99 / lb. Of fat! I cut open the squash to find it rotten all the way through. How they got the shells on their cheap eggs to grow super thin is beyond me. My whole 18 pack of eggs was stuck to the carton and every one of them broke while trying to retrieve them. Thank goodness I have a Vons card. My bill would have been over $700. But it went down to a little over$500 right after I gave them the rewards card. Imagine that! Next time I'm stopping somewhere down the mountain before I get there. Literal highway robbery! read more
