I needed a thru-the-wall exhaust fan installed in my kitchen area. Volta Electric is a local small business in Mechanicsville so I sent them an email. The response was very quick -- Kara asked a few more details about the project, and then she sent me an estimate. It seemed reasonable. I set up an appointment. On the appt day, Mason texted his approx ETA and arrived right on time. He explained each step of the job to me and I could tell he was a perfectionist! And bonus, he is such a nice young man! He also was very up front about what things wouldn't be covered in the estimate, such as patching any wall board that had to be cut. He did an excellent job, with patience and precision. Had the opportunity to do business with Volta a few months ago when moving into a new home. Volta had been recommended by our realtor. We reached out, discussed and got a quote from Volta. Paid our deposit, and they showed in time and did the work. Replacing/upgrading the panel isn't a cheap process but Vokta's technicians were great in setting us setting us up with some extra outlets. Everyone was profession and the work was too knotch. Final bill came, and it was different than what we had been quoted ( by about a thousand dollars). I reached out to Volta, after verification there was a mistake in the initial quote / estimate they offered to honor it. Our experience with Volts was really great, and loved the way that they handled the mistake, we offered to pay the full sum since it was a mistake and they handled it great. We ended up agreeing on meeting halfway. While I'm sure Volta weren't excited about the loss in revenue, they have received a life long fan and recommendations at every opportunity presented. I contacted Volta after finding the company listed as a Tesla certified vendor to install a HPWC at my home. Mason and Kara were very easy to get in touch with and very personable. Mason came out the same week for a free walk-through for an assessment and measurements. He was extremely humble and so easy to talk to. Had them install a Tesla Wall Charger. My 50 year old house still had the original 150A breaker panel, which required an upgrade to 200A. Volta's quote was reasonably priced for the job. Luis and Israel came to my home and performed the upgrade very professionally, quickly, and with great quality. They laid a new cable from the new panel to the garage (on opposite ends of the house) for the wall charger, and it looks great. Let me start off by saying that I've used Volta several times in the past with no problems. I've always been slightly irked by their refusal to patch drywall they cut into, but in the past it was never too bad. Not so this time. I had instructed the crew on exactly where and how the phone line needed to be brought into the house, requiring only ceiling cuts and at most 2 wall cuts, but I was ignored. They proceeded to cut not only a ridiculously narrow ceiling cut that makes patching even harder, but 7 wall cuts, all but one of which were unnecessary to do the work. When the job was done I had the owner, Mason, over to inspect the horrific mess the crew had made of my wall. He agreed that it was bad, and offered to reimburse me for the cost of patching the wall. BUT, when I later presented him with the invoice for the wall patch (a mere $250) he backed out and gave me a bunch rationalized arguments for why he wouldn't pay. I'm sorry, but if you make that offer, you need to follow through. He gave me his invoice which I paid in full even though I was not happy, yet he would not do the same. Completely unprofessional and short-sighted, pretty much guaranteeing this poor review. This company needs to seriously rethink its customer service and in my opinion hire a drywall guy. Volta completed two jobs for me at my residential house over the past 12-18 months. I work in the new construction industry and their workmanship and quality is the best that I have seen since working in the industry for over 15 years with the last 13 years in Northern Virginia. I hired them again because of their superb work, great communication, and fair and reasonable costs. I strongly recommend them to anyone who needs electrical work completed in their home or business. My first job for them was installing a new 240V dryer plug as my previous one melted in the socket due to a short/malfunction. Luckily the house did not catch fire and the UL safety requirements helped prevent the shotty work by the original homebuilder. Mason worked with me on relocating the outlet and installed a new 240V outlet. Due to Mason's superb work, I hired him to install a brand new 240V GFCI line from the circuit breaker box in the garage to the outdoor patio. This was a much larger job and required multiple days and site visits due to my schedule and work being phased. Mason and his helper Cliff pulled the wire for me (I understood that there would be some drywall repair on my part at the end of the job). They worked with me on the timing and came back about 2 months later to finish connecting the new line to the hot tub. They did an excellent job completing the work in a timely manner and as previously observed, superb quality! Often home contractors do not communicate well with the homeowner regarding what they intend to complete, the cost, and the final product. Mason calls you back quickly, communicates well, arrives when he says he is coming, provides thorough, complete estimates up-front, and is pleasure to work with on projects. I recently had an bad experience with this vendor that I think I should share. I've never posted a Yelp review before or a negative review anywhere that I can recall, but considering Mason's request on the unpleasant last phone conversation I had with him, I'll go ahead and do so. I quote: "Please, post a review. I can't wait to respond. I love it!". If that sounds like a service provider that you'd feel comfortable hiring, you should probably skip the rest of this. In February, I requested estimates from several well-reviewed electricians here on Yelp to install a 240V outlet for the Tesla I was going to take delivery of in March. Volta responded quickly and was the most impressive vendor. Mason and other bidders pointed out that the electrical panel in our 60's era home didn't meet current standards and strongly recommended that we replace it. While I had not anticipated an extra expense that was several times the cost of my original requirement, I was impressed with Mason's expertise and confidence, had him give me estimates for both jobs, and hired Volta to do what he was recommending. He explained that the job would require having our Dominion electric meter replaced and the estimate included the following statement: "Installation includes new meter base. ***Dominion approval/walk through required for upgrade, price assumes Dominion replacing all service wire and weatherhead. Pricing assumes no disconnect necessary.*** Includes all coordination with Dominion, Miss Utility and Fairfax County inspections". The job was scheduled and proceeded satisfactorily. The outlet was installed and is working well. It turned out that Dominion now has a requirement that their meters be located on the front of side of houses and since our existing one was on the back of the house. One might think that a master electrician working in the Northern Virginia area would be aware of this requirement and account for it in their proposal, but tried to take the added expense in stride and authorized Volta to proceed. There was also a extra expense required to prune a bush unless we wanted the large electric meter box facing the street. Volta informed us that they had completed the job and despite the fact that the old meter and exposed wiring around the back and side of our house were still there, we paid their final invoice promptly and in full. At this point, Mason informed us that the removal of the old meter was Dominion's responsibility, but that he would continue to coordinate with them to have this done. Weeks go by, and I realize that nothing has been done about the old meter and wiring, so I contacted Volta and sent them pictures of the existing situation. They expressed frustration with Dominion, but promised to contact them again and that they would have one of their people come out to our house and that: "In terms of the temporary wire that was cut and as merely hanging off of the new work we are more than happy to come out and take that stuff down. Dominion will need to be responsible for their wire as far as I'm concerned." I was happy to hear that and didn't catch the "their wire" caveat. Weeks more go by, I notice the old meter had been removed by Dominion, but that the old, unconnected, inch thick feeder cable was still running halfway around our house, over the siding. Keep in mind that we're not the original owners of the house and had no input or knowledge as to how and by whom this ugly setup was created. I contacted Volta again to ask what happened (or why it didn't happen), but at this point they went into full "not my responsibility" mode. I was told to contact Dominion myself, which I did. They sent a tech out the same day, but didn't do anything and left a note on my door saying "all runs of entrance cable greater than 20' are customer owned". Turns out, I was supposed to have known this, but the pros at Volta weren't. I emailed Volta with Dominion's message, explained I was very dissatisfied asked once again if they would go ahead and take care of it so we could go away happy. I can't imaging it would take a professional with the proper tools more than an hour or two to take this wire down, but apparently the line in the sand had been drawn. Mason called to say that I would have to "stay unsatisfied" and expressed frustration with all the time he had spent dealing with Dominion (let's remember the "Includes all coordination with Dominion" that was part of our estimate). He ended with the quotes above about a review. So I now have the option of paying another electrician or handyman to clean things up or attempt to do it myself. The irony is that if Mason could have been polite about it, acknowledged his customer's frustration and offered to do it for a hundred bucks or so, I probably would have gone ahead and paid it. But he "loves" writing responses to negative reviews, so I'll await my comeuppance as an unreasonable customer. Good luck all. -Andy read more

I had a smell of burning plastic in the upstairs bedrooms. Matt and Bobby of Volta arrived as scheduled and immediately went to work solving the mystery. Relieved to know that the smell wasn't due to a wiring issue rather possible old lamp shades and old lamps with higher then recommended bulbs. Tremendous! We had two ceiling fans installed two weeks ago...one of them required installing all new wiring up to a 20 foot ceiling! The job seemd to become more complicated at every turn...no crawl space in the ceiling, no easy way to get an appropriate sized ladder into the house, etc, etc. Matt and Cliff worked their butts off for two full days...to hang one ceiling fan! Mason and Kara kept in touch with us the entire time to ensure all was going well. And, never did Mason waiver on the price he quoted me after an initial walk through, even though the job was more complicated and took much longer than any one could have anticipated. Extremely disappointed. I have a finished garage, and wanted the set up with clean finish. Mason showed up and when we were trying to ask few questions and requested if there is an option to do it hidden, since I have a big crawl space and the connection was supposed to be right under the panel, he insisted no. And he then said he needs to remove a wooden piece under the panel and he said he cannot fix it again. And he said I need to pack up and leave, and he just left. Volta was highly recommended but totally exceeded my expectations. Let's start with the appointment. I arranged the appointment online, and received an email back in a matter of minutes. I sent pictures of the sites I needed work on and had an appointment within a few more minutes, for the same week. The day of service I got a call from Matt to tell me he was on his way (within the scheduled time frame). He and Jason arrived promptly and introduced themselves. They were both super friendly and extremely polite. I needed pendant lights hung in two different locations and a chandelier in a third location. They took all the lights and chandeliers out of the boxes and assembled everything for me - which was a relief. The instructions overwhelmed me. They were careful to cover furniture and vacuum up all the little styrofoam bits after they were finished. They made recommendations on the height of the pendants, which was really helpful. The best part was this - I had purchased the wrong bulbs, so they offered to go and buy the correct bulbs for me! It was awesome, because I didn't know what the hell to buy. Lightbulbs are confusing nowadays! At the end of the day, the lights look gorgeous! I am super happy with the service, and the quality of the work. Its normal practice for electricians to disregard patching drywall. But the workers seemed rushed and the lead electrician left early for some reason so the rest of the guys simply didn't do a good job cutting the drywall in a number of places. Now re-patching will be harder and a ceiling fan hole is exposed. They seem to use subcontractors for bigger jobs so beware. read more
