My review is based on numerous take out and delivered food. Frankly every time we try to go to the restaurant parking is an issue. We have a few favorites their chicken parm sandwich with French fries is very tasty. Their spaghetti and meatballs is my husband's favorite pasta dish and the portion is huge. It definitely feeds 2 people. I have tried a few of their veal dishes and I'm never disappointed but you can't order the veal too late. It is always pounded thin and butter tender. The chef does a great job with the various sauces. Keeping the flavors but using a light hand. So many italian dishes are very heavy. Some of us are trying to lighten up on the carbs. I find the veal dishes offer a tasty meal without making feel guilty or put you in a carb coma. I just wish they had better parking. On the plus side they are very close to the train station so you can call ahead hop off the train grab takeout and head home with a nice meal. read more

This place was absolutely amazing. It's a BYOB which is really cool. The food was amazing. We had mussels in white wine & garlic sauce. They were just perfect. My dad & I both had their special gravy over pasta. It was a Sunday gravy over rigatoni with sausages, meatballs & pork braciole. This so flavorful and incredibly delicious. My mom had jumbo shrimp over linguini with arugula, lemon & tomato. Absolutely delicious. The service was fantastic. It's family owned and run. Just OK for me. Maybe I had too high of expectations because of the great reviews...or maybe because I get this kind of cooking at home so I'm extremely picky. We had a large party and we had such a hard time finding parking. The lot is extremely small and narrow and there was no street parking for blocks and blocks. When we finally arrived, we were seated promptly. The ambiance is cute and the decor is nice. For my meal I got the equivalent of rigatoni and meatballs, which also included sausage and braciole. For apps we got calamari which was actually really disappointing, border line gross. It was so heavy on the oil and there was no taste to it. My meal was pretty good, but the meatballs were really bad. Like so bad I threw them out. The sauce was good and the pasta was cooked to my liking, but those meatballs ugh. My cousin ordered the Veal Osso Buco which was supposed to be served over risotto. What came looked like minute rice, not risotto. When my cousin brought it to our servers attention, she told us that it was indeed risotto and instructed us on how to make it. We come from a first generation Italian family, and our parents are straight from Italy so I think we know how to make risotto and what it's supposed to taste like. She ended up taking it off the bill which was nice. Overall, my meal was OK. It wasn't a total train wreck so I would be willing to come back and try other things on the menu. We have not eaten in the place yet but have order for take-out or delivery about a half dozen times now. The wife is fond of their Veal and spinach dishes and I like there pasta w/meatballs and all of us like their chicken parm sandwiches. So far, the food is always hot and tasty on delivery. They did make one mistake during a delivery recently where we ordered 3 sandwiches and only delivered 2. But to their credit the delivery guy immediately went back and returned with the third. The staff is amazing. They have this housemade oil for bread that is so freaking good I wish they sold it by the bottle. We had three appetizers, clams oreganata, muscled in white wine sauce and burrata. They were all perfect especially the muscles. The white wine sauce was delicious. Our salads promptly came out but had some funky dressing that I was not feeling. No big deal, just wanted my dinner. Well,we waited, & waited, & waited. Ahh, finally our dinners have arrived!!! I ordered some chicken dish (forgot exactly what it was as it's been a while), it was fine, not good not bad just fine. The supposed "homemade"pasta that accompanied my chicken was overcooked, mushy & definitely NOT homemade. He ordered the "Sunday Sauce" I'm sorry, how does a restaurant that claims to be Italian, have the balls to serve meatballs that are reminiscent of bagged, frozen meatballs from Costco?!? Next, the braciole & sausage in the Sunday Sauce were freezer burned & again the pasta overcooked, mushy & not homemade. Nice... This faux Italian food may appeal to the seniors whom have lost most of their taste buds & have an easier time gumming the mushy pasta, but it does not appeal to me. Now I got your attention LOL (I bet some Elvis Fanatic calls the Bergen Record claiming that a yelp reviewer saw "the real Elvis" and that he is still alive LOL) Anyway, I read a biography on Elvis once and the author told an anecdote about how Elvis once was so drugged out near the end of his life, that he once covered an entire omelet with so much black pepper that you couldn't see the eggs. What's worse is that he proceeded to eat it. That's sort of how I feel about Volare's and their relationship with parsley! They smother it on everything! I got a restaurant.com coupon to try this place and took a close friend of mine with me. I left very puzzled how this place got decent reviews. Food: 2 and a half stars: I ordered a simple fried calamari as an entrée and it was bland and uninspired. The breading was virtually non-existent and the marinara sauce that came with it was swimming in parsley! It's like they took canned sauce and added parsley to it and thought this was homemade. For my entrée I ordered a spaghetti special with a sausage ragu and veal meatballs. The dish was good but missed an opportunity. The spaghetti was cooked perfect yet despite what they claim it WAS NOT HOMEMADE! (I have had homemade pasty many times before I KNOW WHAT HOMEMADE TASTES LIKE! This isn't it. The meatballs that came with it were very good and it was the best part of the dish. I liked that they didn't use a lot of filler. Plus, THEY USE TOO MUCH DAMN PARSLEY! The sausage ragu for me was unusual and off-putting! It tasted like grocery bought Italian Sausage with way too much parsley and fennel. If they would have mixed other meat with it or actually used homemade sausage, I would have liked it better. Ironically, the salad that came with my entrée was the best part of the meal. They had a lemon and garlic dressing which was very good. Service: 2 and a half stars: The service in this place was weird! The initial waitress told us every single thing you can drink as if we couldn't figure it out ourselves. Strange! Plus she had a very dour attitude that was not pleasant to deal with. The other waitress who took our order was pleasant and friendly but a little too eager and too obtrusive. She came back every 90 seconds to check up on us. It felt like Big Brother! She wasn't a bad waitress per se but she seemed overly anxious and didn't allow us space to breathe. Atmosphere: 3 stars: Atmosphere was standard although I really hated the piped-in Italian crooner music which comes across so pretentious. Restaurant was small and half empty for a Saturday Night! Bad Sign: Verdict: Like a lot of things I life, you try something once and move on. I won't be back here. Ladies and gentleman, Elvis has left the building, and so have I :) PS: If Erin C. is reading this, if you think this place is 5-star Italian, you are in need of a serious taste intervention. I've been here only 3 or 4 times, but I've never been disappointed. Meats and fish are cooked properly with lots of flavor. Pastas may be too firm for some, but you can always tell them not too al dente. Salads are crispy and very fresh. There are a good variety of desserts and cafes. And it's a BYOB with a liquor store 2 doors away. Parking can be tricky, but there is a garage 1 block away. Denise and her chef son are the owners and are very welcoming and helpful. Sid is a lovely waiter and really amusing. They have dinner specials for $15 cash which is unbeatable and with lots of choices. I'm also a big fan of their bruschetta. They have a "supped-up" olive oil on the table that is delicious and sold by the bottle. Come and enjoy some real good Italian eats here when you're looking for someplace new. read more

Volare is a small Italian restaurant that has amazing food and wonderful service. The specials are abundant. The menu is carefully planned and prepared. The service cozy and just like home. There's a special plate called malfaltta (sp?). It's ricotta cheese-based dumplings. They are light! They are delicious! They are amazing! You must call in at least a day in advance, maybe two, to request the malfaltta. They make it on premises, so it requires preparation. I went there recently and shared the malfaltta with a friend who doesn't like ricotta...Well, he loved the malfaltta! I had black linguini with white clam sauce topped with crabmeat...DEELISH! Come here often but last night was one of the best meals EVER!! Had the special pork Osso buco with sweet potato gnocchi. It was cooked perfectly nested in a vegetable sauce/ gravy. Cute Little place in my town right on the circle in Rutherford. It has a nice atmosphere, very relaxed, with great service. Even if the atmosphere was bad with horrible service this place would still get 5 stars because of the food. Their menu is great, but the real magic happens in their specials. I order from the specials every time. I love their chicken special dishes. All of their pasta is fresh and a salad comes with every meal which is hard to come by these days, especially at italian places. The dressing on the salad is homemade and is fabulous. We've never explored Rutherford before and while yelping for an Italian BYO nearby (our favorite was closed that day) we decided to give Volares a try. It's a cute setup inside. They have 4 course dinner specials for a really good price which is cash only. We opted out of the special but instead chose an appetizer and entree each. The complimentary warm bread was really good paired with a spiced olive oil. I actually really enjoyed my pasta fagioli to start. My bf thought his crab cake appetizer was just ok but I think it was because he wasn't expecting some of the spices/flavors in it. For my entree, I ordered the classic linguine with clams and it definitely satisfied my cravings. The portion was generous as was the servings of clams (a mix of little neck and top neck) in a garlicky delicious sauce. My bf had the tornnerelli, linguine in a white vodka sauce. The shrimp that came with the pasta was fresh and again they were generous with the portions. Service was also friendly. The food was good Italian food, the pre-fix four course menu is a great deal (17.95 for cash, 20.95 for credit) however the appetizer, salad and dessert is pretty small in portion size. The main dish was the best part. The clams oreganata were soupy. You also cannot use coupons at all if anyone on the check orders from the pre fix menu. read more

this is my family go to dinner stop. Six of us dined here last night and it was once again a great experience! We are always treated like family. My younger nieces are picky eaters, but actually like coming here and always find something they can enjoy.. We have also order their to go dinner package and it is a great value when you do not want to cook, but are also too tired to go out. Not great for the area. We came mid-afternoon and once other people come in, it feels like everyone is on top of one another. Parking is pretty bad on weekends, but that's just a problem with the area. We came with a Groupon not too long ago and made the waitress aware of this. And eventually, my mother ordered one of the deals they were running. And when it was time to pay, the waitress said that they don't accept groupons if you order that deal. Unbelievable! From the moment we walked in we're greeted by a sign at the door saying the credit card machine isn't woek so customers must pay cash only. Not exactly convenient for a dinner we knew would cost us upwards of $100, but ok at least they let us know up front. We were greeted by a waitress who seemed a bit frazzled and shown to a table. When the waitress came to take our order she let us know that the kitchen was backed up and that it would be about 45 mins before they could get any food out. Mind you there were only a handful of customers in the restaurant besides us. We asked if we could at least get some appetizers or something while we waited. The waitress told us nothing would be leaving the kitchen for at least 45 minutes. No thank you! The restaurant atmosphere wasn't even that inviting. We decided to go elsewhere. read more
