State Fair Egg Rolls
Sam B.

I visited Vn Express today and overall had a great experience! First, this restaurant is small with only 5 tables... hence the name. However, we arrived around 11:30 and we were the first dine-in customers for lunch. After ordering at the counter, we seated ourselves. The employee taking orders was so nice, attentive, and helpful by bringing us extra plates, napkins, sauces, etc. The good: The state fair egg rolls are absolutely delicious! They're cooked to perfection and complimented so well with the sauces. The chicken pho was perfect on this cold winter day! I loved how tender the chicken was and how salty yet fresh the broth and fresh herbs tasted. The not so good: The beef pad Thai was oddly sweet. I've had my fair share of pad Thai and this one was overly sweet. I wouldn't order it again. Overall, I highly recommend the state fair egg rolls and the chicken pho! I can't wait to visit again to try the fresh spring rolls, beef bulgogi fries, and more!

Solid Vietnamese food. My wife and I came here because the Vietnamese community has been talking about this spot which means it good! Their egg rolls are killer! Huge, super crispy and an awesome filling. Pho was def good but suprised they did not have meat balls as a choice. The noodle dish was excellent as it was cooked perfectly al dente with fresh ingredients and good flavors. The prices are not cheap and seating is limited but if you are on this side of town Vn Express is worth your time!

Ugh. I really wanted to love this place! Let's talk about the positives first.. First impression - it's a clean restaurant with just a handful of tables. You order at the counter then they'll bring the food to you. Had to try the eggrolls since I've heard so much about them. They're huge and meaty with a good crisp on the outside! Here's where the stars start going down. Ordering and Paying - their menu isn't extensive, but they have the staples, which is great! A standard bowl of pho is $9, no different sizes or anything, but then it's an additional $3 for each protein. So if I wanted to get a typical house special, I'd be paying over $20 for a regular sized bowl of pho. So the bill adds up quickly! They have the standard tip option after you pay with your card. The options are no top, 15%, 20%, and higher. I asked if there was a way to do a custom tip and the lady said no. So I selected no tip and figured we'd leave what cash we had with us after we ate. The food - cream cheese wontons has scallions in it, wasn't expecting it and wasn't a fan. The kids wouldn't even eat a second bite! The pho was nothing special. Disappointing that the menu is ala carte, so the pho was pretty basic and the broth was only ok. Had a more fragrant smell than others, but the taste was just ok. The thing that was the most disappointing was the service. Not once did the young lady that took my order and bring the food out smile or use any manners whatsoever. My 15 year old even noticed, and as we were leaving she went up to her and said thank you, and the young lady had no response! Vn Express will never be my first choice but still an option for something out in the burbs.

Pho time! So excited to try a new pho restaurant and they also have a wide variety of other food options as well. Upon walking in, you need to head to the counter and order and then they will bring your order to your table. They roughly have 5 modern tables to dine at. The very very cool thing about this restaurant is that they are represented at the state fair. They also have to die for egg rolls, iced Vietnamese coffee, and cream cheese wontons. (Que viet concession) I ordered the pho with thin steak. I love the fact that the accoutrements were on a platter on top of the bowl...I've never seen that and so clever! The meal was delish and there was even some leftover to take home. My only note was that there was no music playing so it was a bit quiet in there but I can't wait to come back.

Pho w ox tail

The pho is great. Flavorful, clear n light. Medium to small sized noodles.... a must get. Nine dollar for the pho with additional add ons. This can be pricey cause I want all the add ons. Ox tail was good; I ate it to the bones. The rice noodles (bun) were average tasting with small size shrimp. Food came out quick. Good service. Small place; about alittle over dozen or so for seating.

I don't usually expect much from Asian restaurants in the suburb but I was surprised to have enjoyed it. The pho was flavorful and the garlic chili oil was a nice kick. I ordered mine to go so I got all the little accoutrements packages all nicely. I had the spring rolls but I found them to lack anything memorable - I'd have loved some mint in them. The sweet and sour chicken had a hint of spice but I'm thankful they packed it separately from the sauce so it wasn't soggy by the time I got it home. I think the cost is definitely higher than what you would typically see in Vietnamese restaurants but you're in the suburbs, I expect a markup. Service was quick and everything was packaged nicely. Place was quiet, clean and open. I'll have to come back and try these eggrolls but I'm really picky about eggrolls.

So my significant other and I finally got to try VN Express and I have to say I'm impressed. It's small inside so definitely not ideal for bigger groups, I guess that's the reason for express in the name. My other half and I ordered pho, and spring rolls. She had beef and I had chicken and shrimp pho. I had a bottle of water and she had Vietnamese coffee that she said was wonderful. The staff were really helpful and greeted us with smiles. We were served by Bonnie, even though she was busy with call in orders and helping the cooks in the back she still made time to check in on us. We dined in and we liked what they did with the space. The bathroom was clean and this place has a lot of potential. The one thing that blew me away is that they only have pork spring rolls and I do not eat pork or beef. Bonnie came to the rescue and made me some shrimp spring rolls which really made me feel special. I can honestly say I have never been to a place that was so caring and eager to make the customers feel special. My girlfriend ordered their wings the next day photo not included because they were so good we devoured them before we had the chance. They have a lot of other things that I am excited to try also, so we will return, thanks Bonnie and VN Express!!!

Stopped in to try the state fair egg rolls as I've heard nothing but great things. Let me tell you... they are fantastic! Served made to order.... Fresh, hot, and crispy! Restaurant is clean. Smaller restaurant with a handful of tables (more take out). The gal who helped us was welcoming. The state fair wontons are the next thing on the list to try. Of course, an egg roll to go with it.

Fried Rice and Pho

FINALLY! This is the place I've been looking for in the SW metro serving really great Asian takeout. Only problem is it's not Chinese food per se rather as the name implies it's Vietnamese. Ordered the Pho with beef and shrimp, Egg Rolls and Pork Fried Rice. They advertise the egg rolls as State Fair eggrolls and remind me of Que Viet which in my book means best around! They are hefty and stuffed with mostly meat, unless of course you get the vegetable ones for some strange reason. The pho broth was crystal clear and thankfully didn't just rely on five spice for its flavor. Really loved the to go bowl which has a tray for the veggies that sits atop the bowl of lightly cooked beef and noodles. The broth should have been much hotter but a couple minutes in the microwave and it was ready to finish the cooking on the meat and noodles. The fried rice was perfect and something I would happily eat anytime I have a craving for it. The space is small and primarily for takeout but they do have a very limited amount of seating inside. So excited to try more items and grateful I now have a go too for Asian food in my not so new part of the city!

Great food and service. The price is reasonable for the portions. The egg rolls are big and enough for two or three

The spring roll and peanut sauce were both tasty, but it wasn't wrapped in plastic, so rice got all over it. A small thing, but easy to fix for takeout orders. The fried rice was good too, pretty standard. The menu lists the Kung Pao as spicy, but I'd call it more of a hint of spice. Still delicious, and it normally comes with peanuts. I asked for none and they got it right, which I really appreciated. For $11.99, it's a good lunch deal. I'd order again.

Ordering from Vangz Kitchen was super easy. Their online menu is great and explains what each dish…read moreis and customizations available. There is a good variety of Chinese, Hmong, and Vietnamese options (mainly pho). When I picked up my order the location appeared very clean and chill. I wouldn't mind eating in the restaurant. They also have kiosks where you order rather than ordering with a person, but someone was close to greet me and hand me my to go order. Onto the food, my friend ordered the sesame chicken with white rice. The portion is pretty good sized, unfortunately I don't have a photo. The sauce is very dark, and didnt really give sesame chicken as you'd probably expect from other sesame chickens in the twin cities. However it was a nice umami and cooked well. I enjoyed them, but it was not to my friend's taste nor what she expected. I ordered the braised pork belly special with purple sticky rice and Hmong sausage. The pork belly came with one egg, you can add more for an additional cost. The sausage comes with a spicy sauce, which you can also get extra for additional cost. The pork belly was soooo fatty. Like barely any fat rendering seems to have occurred and for being braised and fatty the meat was surprisingly dry/tough. The flavor was very sweet. It would have been nice for a bit more salty/umami to shine through. The egg was yummy, sauce penetrated the egg white pretty completely. Not sure how those are supposed to be in this particular dish, but it was a hard boil, not jammy or anything like that. The Hmong sausage was my favorite, very nice texture and flavor. The sauce is super spicy and pairs well with everything. The purple sticky rice was also perfect. Last, I added on a mango cheese bun which was fresh, lightly sweet, and delicious however it was not made from Vangz. It was pre packed from a St Paul bakery, so still local at least but I was expecting from their dessert options that those were made in house. Overall, the meal was decent. I purposely went with a special dish rather than a more popular choice because I like to show different options in my reviews. I hate when I can't find the whole menu in actual customer photos. If people are only ordering 5 items from you, that says something about your menu and overall food quality. I'm still curious to see what else Vangz has to offer before I write them off. I was torn between choosing the pork belly stir fry or crispy pork belly. I'd also love to try their pho. I will be back to try more and update my review :)

We got 8 potstickers (they were giving 4 to each person for free to celebrate). Mouthwatering. The potstickers are the best ones I've ever had. We usually go for the chicken curry. However, this time we got the butternut squash/ shrimp mix, and their new chicken teriyaki. All of them were so flavorful, I'm pretty sure they are fresh. You can never go wrong with anything here. I would recommend everything! The only note I would make is that this is a smaller restaurant. There isn't a lot of space for the demand. If you go, I would recommend making a reservation. If you don't, you will most than likely have to wait for a table to open up. The service is always great. This time our food took a very long time, especially our main dishes. However, we don't mind waiting at all. Just a heads up that it might take a little longer than expected! Please be patient and give this place all the love it deserves.

I ordered the egg rolls, wontons, and the sesame chicken lunch combo. When we arrived, we noticed they had a lunch special available until 3 p.m. We asked if we could still order from that menu, and the woman taking our order pointed to her clock and said no. I glanced at my phone--it was 2:55 p.m. I asked her when the cut off time was and mentioned that their clock seemed a bit fast. She eventually let us order the lunch combo, but it was clear she wasn't thrilled about it. The interaction left us feeling a little awkward. As for the food--it was just okay. The wontons were bland and lacked any real flavor. The sesame chicken was underwhelming, missing that punch of sweetness and crunch I was hoping for. The side of rice tasted old and dry, like it had been sitting out for a while. The one highlight was the egg roll. It came out hot and fresh, crispy on the outside and filled with a good amount of veggies. It's definitely up there with my favorites. If I'm in the area again and my bestie is craving this spot, I'd be open to giving it another shot. Next time, I'd skip the combo and stick with the egg rolls, and maybe try her favorite dish--the lo mein. Hopefully, it'll be a better experience.
