We were driving thru Pittsfield on I95 to Boston and found this hidden gem of a restaurant! Meg & Tammy have created a sweet, friendly hometown feel with delicious sandwiches, burgers and soups - our family loved the clam chowder, baked French onion soups and burgers and they have this yummy appetizer called onion frizzles (so good!). Until I checked here on Yelp! I had forgotten we've been to Vittles once before - a year ago. Once again we were there for breakfast after a quick appointment at the nearby hospital. Being winter, we ate inside this time! As always, and as mentioned in the first review, I had to find something different to try, as I cook a lot of breakfasts for myself at home. I settled on the corned beef hash, made in house, with the home fries, eggs and toast. The hash was excellent, as were the home fries and rye toast. The eggs were scrambled well enough, I suppose, but they seemed bland. Maybe I should have asked for a little salsa! The coffee was just okay considering they were advertising the Carrabassett brand they used. My wife ordered the avocado scramble, which also came with eggs and home fries, and she added bacon on the side. Unlike ravenous me, she had to take her eggs home. I can't forget to mention the server (Maggie?) who was friendly, chatty and took great care of us. I recommend Vittles even for breakfast, but I will repeat what I said in the other review: I want to get back there for lunch or dinner! read more

Nice place in a tiny town. Home cooking at its best. Not far off the highway. I had shrimp and peppers with fries. The fries are home made from maine potatoes. The shrimp was very good also. My wife and I had the opportunity to stop at Vittles on our way to a wedding in Nova Scotia and it was a fantastic choice. It's amazing how different a good ham sandwich - with toothsome ham sliced straight from a roast and homemade condiments on a robust multigrain - can be from what "ham sandwich" usually means. My wife got half a grilled cheese alongside their excellent haddock and shrimp chowder. The service was great and (I think?) Megan spent a lovely few minutes talking ingredients and menu construction as we wrapped up. I'll be back the next time I'm in Pittsfield! read more

Staying in the area near Pittsfield on our first visit to Maine, we found this location when searching for local places to eat. Given that it was a local place and various reviews looked positive, we decided to give it a try. It also has been here for at least 10 years, so that was likely a good sign. Walking in reviewed revealed what appears to be a converted bar with that older rustic feel. The first person to greet us Megan was chatty and made us feel welcome right away. She also was attentive by proactively lowering a window shade for us. Our specific server Tammy was friendly and took some time to chat given we were from out of town. It wasn't really busy but Pittsfield isn't necessarily a bustling metropolis. Time seems to move slower here, which is good to me when on vacation. We ordered around 11:45 and the food arrived about 20 minutes later. Their menu indicated that food is fresh (not canned or frozen). Items were hot when arriving. If you like onion rings, try the frizzled onions. They're only open W-Sun, which I'm not used to but understandable probably based on the local flow of things and that it seemed family owned. A completely unexpected GEM of a breakfast/lunch stop in Pittsfield ME!! I was driving with an elderly auntie up into Northern Maine to the Canadian border and we were looking for a place for lunch. LUCKILY we randomly turned right in to a parking lot off the highway and noticed the Vittles "OPEN" flag. We were seated right away in their super cool space, complete with tin ceilings and one tin wall, and ordered a grilled cheese and a cup of french onion soup. First, the grilled cheese was superb, three different kinds of cheeses and a thin slice of tomato perfectly grilled on a loaf of oversized sandwich bread with hand cut fries. With all of that said though, the french onion soup was superb!!! I mean, a perfect amount of browned onions in a delicate broth with hints of sherry, topped with a bunch of craggy house made croutons and a TON of melted cheese!!! Honestly, I wish wish wish I lived closer! If you happen to find yourself in this part of Maine, check this place out!!!! read more

Vittles was recommended to us by a local man at a gas station. I ordered a western omelette, my wife ordered the blueberry flapjacks. The food was amazing, truly great! If you are heading up 95 like I was and see the sign, TAKE THE EXIT IMMEDIATELY! This place has become a must stop destination for my family and I. Vittles is an absolute gem of an establishment and I highly recommend it to anyone! The breakfast menu has just the right amount of options for just the right price. Including this delectable almond crunch French toast that balanced well with Rick's homemade hash. To wash it all down with smooth hot coffee that has notes of chocolate. Lunch is also amazing with their legendary salt and pepper wrap and nice hot cup of chowder. I've met Rick a handful of times now, delivering nothing but top notch and attentive service. We were driving from Bar Harbor to Boston on vacation and the kids just happened to be ready for a rest when we pulled off the highway near Pittsfield. A beautiful, quaint town and this restaurant was an amazing find! The staff was so friendly and the kids playhouse was exactly what the little ones needed while we waited for the food. Anyway...the food was excellent! I definitely recommend the burger using fresh, local beef! The rest of the family tried a little of everything and no one was unhappy, even the picky eaters of the group. Thank you yelp! Looking for a place for breakfast on a random Summer Sunday in Central, Maine and looked on yelp for a recommendation. What a gem! The place is very comfortable. The outside and inside are very inviting. The wait staff is very friendly and nice. The prices were a pleasant surprise. The portions were ample and tasty. I had the Spanish omelet which came with homefires and an homemade English muffin. She had the veggie breakfast burrito which was big enough that she had to take half with us.. It was all top notch. The coffee could have been a bit warmer and stronger but not enough to knock it from 5 stars. I'm upgrading this restaurant to 4 stars bc of its excellent service and ambiance. Here's the low down: Coffee: 3 , I was expecting a better cup Food :3 , basic , nothing that stands out . A must try is the corn beef hash 4 star. Too bad it was a thin small portion but the quality, freshness and flavor screams out home made. This is a review for breakfast only. It is also open for lunch and dinner . Service: 5 , the server came to us 4 ( four) times to fill our coffee . Wow. She kept asking us if we wanted more coffee and asked us if we needed anything else. What attentive service! It seems like I take a bite and she's making her way around the corner to see if we needed more coffee! Ambience and decor: 4 , nice , homey , and country theme decorated . The saving grace was the kids play area. My kids pancakes (ordered 3 for 3kids- all were still the color of the batter (not browned) and my 10yo said they were tasteless... the "ranch" salad dressing was an unusual clumpy consistency and lacked in flavor-- the French onion soup had nutmeg or cloves- a weird flavor for a traditionally savory soup... Wanted to get a quick meal for take out. I ordered a "bowl" of clam chowder and the fried haddock dinner. Not realizing the cost until going in to pay. $35 for both, portions are so tiny. The clam chowder should've been a cup size, not a bowl. Also there were potatoes inside that tasted like raw dough. The haddock didn't have any seasoning at all and no sauces or utensils were offered. Honestly not worth your money. read more

Was recommended to come here by one of the owners at The Brewster Inn. It was delicious! I had the haddock and shrimp chowder, the chicken parmesan wrap with parmesan fries, a cider, and delicious homemade ice cream. It is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. I have wanted to try this restaurant for two years because of word of mouth advertising. Finally made it and I was underwhelmed. The food was good, but the average rating is due to the service (or lack thereof). I walked in at 1:30 pm for a late lunch. Vittles closes at 3. It took 5 minutes for anyone to acknowledge my presence. There was one other table taken; otherwise the place was empty. When the server finally meandered over she was pleasant and took my order--water, coffee, chicken corn soup. After 15 minutes (!) I asked her if I could have water and she slapped her forehead and said she "totally forgot". She promptly brought water and cold coffee. I took the coffee back to her and nicely requested a warm cup of coffee. Again the palm to the head. She made a warm cup for me, then brought out the soup, which was very tasty. If you go to Vittles, realize that the food is good (maybe a bit overpriced), and the service is lackadaisical. I doubt I'll return. read more

As usual I sat at the bar. I was looking for a late lunch on my way to Bangor, and stumbled upon this place. Clean, friendly decor of a neighborhood diner. Relaxed atmosphere. The two ladies who served me at the bar were friendly and knowledgeable, and what they didn't know, they were happy to ask the kitchen. I was annoying and asked a bunch of questions and made some changes to my order, so their patience was really appreciated. The side salad I got was fresh and delicious, if a little bit small for the upcharge. The ranch dressing was packed with flavor, bordering on an aioli texture rather than traditional buttermilk dressing, but a little bit went a long way and I really enjoyed it with the greens. The pickles were a simple addition, but delicious. The main course was a grilled chicken panini with roasted red peppers instead of tomatoes. Everything was cooked well and tasted great. Whatever the sauce on there was, like the dressing, packed with flavor. Bread had nice press marks on it and was flavorful and not at all stale. Definitely will go back again if I'm driving from Augusta to Bangor. Outstanding service and good food with a slightly inventive twist. read more

I had to make sure to let everyone know how wonderful this little gem of a restaurant is! I had the pleasure of eating at Vittles Restaurant yesterday, it was fabulous! This is a diner with that old time, friendly atmosphere, it's also so very clean. The inside is like a 50's diner bright and cheery with an ice cream counter and the round spinning seats. Plenty of booths and several high top tables available for seating. There were perfect old time potato masher and beaters hanging on the wall, the old fashioned tin ceiling tiles were beautiful. The booth I sat in was exactly as you would imagine a well worn seat to feel like it literally had a perfect dip in it as if to say welcome, you're one of hundreds to enjoy the food here today. I was greeted and waited on immediately. The people eating were nice the wait staff was excellent and the food was cooked to perfection. I received everything that I asked for, everything was hot and fresh it looked fabulous. The food presentation was excellent the taste was delicious. My burger was exactly as I ordered it. The desert selection was large and looked good from what I saw come out for others. I had the ice cream and as you can see from the pictures this place is the real deal! They love food and it shows in everything they send out of the kitchen. Thank you for an amazing dining experience. I'll definitely be back! Never before have I given 5-stars after lunchtime dining. If I could give more stars to Vittles...I would! Walking in, the sun was beaming on a small seating area (couches, books, magazines, board games). The dining room featured tray ceilings, handwritten specials scribed in chalk, and assorted vintage kitchen tools on display. Scanning the menu, it was obvious a lot of thought went into the fare. Unique, creative, fresh/quality ingredients. I had narrowed my selection down to three options, until our waitress (Joyce, super friendly) announced the specials. I was sold on the crispy chicken mango salsa wrap w/ teriyaki sauce. My wrap was surrounded by made-to-order waffle cut chips. I could think of no better accompaniment for the chips than their house BBQ sauce. (A-mazing!) The extra crispy chicken in the wrap was without a doubt the BEST I've tasted. The cucumber/onion salad (which is usually just a "filler" on the plate) was bold and flavorful. After my meal, I wandered over to the glassed-in display of confectioneries (again, homemade). While window shopping, the owner approached me and presented a strawberry cow-tail. He also makes his own ice cream! It isn't often you come across a business that takes such pride in the quality ingredients, presentation, and imagination of their menu. Biscuit and sausage gravy was best I've had in a while (tons of sweat Italian sausage). However, hash was a miss. I appreciate what they were trying, but it didn't work. Best restaurant in the area. I love that everything is locally made. Salads are great.. I loved the veggie burger.. I've also had the chicken parm, and the pesto chicken panini on previous visits. They also had some fried squash last fall that was amazing, but I am assuming that is seasonal. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Let me start by saying, I have never left a review at an establishment, negative or positive - however, Vittles deserves all the praise! We stopped off the highway (to use the restrooms) on our way to UMaine and decided to try it out for a bite to eat, unsure of what this restaurant had to offer. The entire family was pleasantly surprised, from the older style diner feel, the excellent waiter (whom we're assuming was an owner?) and the food was absolutely delicious! Eating in is a hit or miss "post" COVID, with long wait times and stressed staff, but they handled the lunch rush amazingly! Two thumbs up!! Oh! Went here for a lunch with family after they had a long travel from canada only to find that their food did not live up to our expectations based on previous visits. My grandmother isn't picky, and she had her meal back for a rather reasonable reason. I note this because we were charged twice for the meal. The fact that our meal cost over $90.00 and they messed up 3/5 meals is precocious and disgusting. I urge all who wish to visit Vittles to reconsider, as you will be sadly disappointed. read more

If I ever came back through this little town I would try this again. Our lunch was just ok. The turkey club that was raved about wasn't that great to me. Thick bread x 3 equals bread overdose. The owner recommended the vegy burger and I didn't care for it at all. It tasted like spicy black beans in a patty. The hand cut fries looked inviting but were undercooked and soggy. The hubs chose the hand cut chips and they were better than anything else. The people were darling and very friendly and the place was very warm and small town charming and clean. I'm chalking this off as just bad choices. I would try a wrap or a burger if I could visit again. read more

Food seems to be pretty good but don't expect much as far as service goes. I've been wanting to try this little place due to all the good reviews seeing as I pass through Pittsfield every now and then. We had omelettes and biscuits and gravy. I definitely enjoyed it. But the 3 stars is for the lack of service. You might as well just stick a couple of mannequins in there. At least you wouldn't have to pay them. read more
