I researched various Italian restaurants on the border of Windsor and Detroit since we were taking the tunnel bus and this was the only one that was opened early (the rest opened at 4pm on). This hidden gem is about a mile and a half from the customs border and not too bad of a walk aside from the heat. Please note that you are basically walking through a semi rough area, but relatively safe in broad daylight. Ambience was nice but very casual, and it was fairly busy with limited seating, but we were seated immediately. Our server was pretty attentive at first, and I wouldn't say genuinely nice but nice because she had to be. As for the good, it was good but not excellent. We started off with the brie al forno appetizer, which left me disappointed as I love brie. The description was spot on with chopped walnuts, brown sugar, and apples, and it was ok, but not very flavorful nor "briesy" enough (crackers were just ok). I ordered the pasta pomodoro, and it was tasty but too tomatoey for me. My friend ordered the lasagna and was warned by our server beforehand that it was huge, but he managed to finish it all, and I tasted it, and it was excellent. As for our drinks, my friend ordered a strawberry basil lemonade (Grey goose vodka), and I had a Grey goose vodka martini and both were refreshing but pricey. Overall, I would go again if I visited Windsor in the future, but would like to try the other Italian restaurants in the area as well. read more

For many years, I was told if you want true Italian food, gotta head to Windsor, well I can't say if that's true, but their food was pretty good. My nephew was visiting from Cali and he wanted Italian food and him having lived in Florence for six months, he was looking for the authentic Italian joint, so that's that lol. I street parked, then realized they had parking lot across the restaurant, so yeah park there and skip the street parking. Walked in and after few minutes we were seated. I knew what I wanted, but waited for my nephew to decide... he wasn't sure what to get, either Ravioli or Alfredo... after doing a coin toss, he said Ravioli, then when the waiter came by, he asked what he recommended - waiter said his favorite was Alfredo, so my nephew went with that.... We got: - Calamari - Fried - Alfredo with Shrimp - Pasta con Frutta di Mare (seafood Pasta) Calamari - very well seasoned and enjoyed it by itself. Plenty on the plate for 2-3 to share, the dipping sauce was excellent as well. Next time, I'll have to try the grilled version. Pasta con Frutta di Mare - loved it, best seafood pasta I had thus far in the Midwest (including Windsor Canada). I would highly recommend this dish to anyone that loves seafood. Alfredo with Shrimp - I tried little and was disappointed. It was just ok, skip it. My nephew was disappointed as well, he regretted listening to the waiter, he should have stuck with his first choice lol. Service - hit or miss. When we arrived, they only had 2 servers working. We didn't really see our waiter until at the end, when they brought out the bill... I had to ask another waiter for refill on my water. I can't give them 5 stars, but for now I'll settle with 4 stars. All the food items that I ordered were great, but was bit disappointed with the service. I came here with a couple of friends during Covid when we were allowed to eat in restaurants. Although the restaurant is small, I felt safe with their Covid measures; masks and plastic barriers between tables. It was hard to choose what I wanted, but I opted for the meatballs and a caprese salad. Holy meatballs for days! I was not expecting them to be the size of my head. I got 2 meatballs with a lot of sauce. I ended up eating 1/2 a meatball, and saved the rest for home. The caprese salad was just your average salad, but it was good pairing it with the meatballs. Not sure what all the fuss is about. I have ordered 3 meals over the last 2 weeks. Bland Penne with meat sauce. It needed more of everything, Salt, pepper, parmesan. After I fixed it not bad. But should I need to fix it for the price Im paying. Ordered basic pepperoni pizza twice for take out. First time it was just warm. Second time (today) looked like it had been sitting for a least 30 minutes. Chicken parm good but again not at all hot. Came with fingerling potatoes and hard (not firm) carrots and broccoli. Very little effort put into this meal. I called and was told 50 minutes for pick up. OK no problem, arrived exactly 50 minutes latter. My order of chicken parm is sitting on the counter and the pizza sitting on the oven. Both cold. What on earth are they thinking. (But then I learned that there are a lot of Italians and good Italian restaurant in the town) The pizza here was made in a traditional Italian pizza oven with woodfire. We ordered Mediterranean as the waiter recommended and it tasted awesome! It's crunchy on the side but with a lot of flavours and ingredients on the top - olives, red peppers, chicken, tomato, cheese and some sliced basils. It's tasty and right amount of cheese as it's not so heavy. And everything pairs well with a bit acidity from the tomatoes! The service here is awesome! Extremely overpriced for the quality and taste of the food. Literally paid $15 for a Cesar salad and $19 for a personal sized pizza Mediterraneo. The chicken on the pizza was not seasoned at all, so you were left with this nasty chicken aftertaste. We ordered a slice of Reese's cheesecake for $11!!!! And was a half of a half of a slice. I'm honestly not understanding the positive reviews here. You know it's the place to be when there's usually a crowd of people speaking Italian dining here. Choosing one of their pasta dishes or pizza is always a good choice. I really liked their shrimp wrapped with prosciutto in Grand Marnier and the shrimp was more like prawns as they were pretty big. The Grand Marnier gave it a great aftertaste. Had their Pasta con Frutta di Mare which was their seafood pasta in a light red sauce. There was a good amount of seafood, enough for every bite! Their Pasta Carbonara looked really creamy and delicious and would probably try next time. Their service was top notch with class, waiters were extremely professional and knowledgeable of their menu if you need any help. Not like how some venues tell you to order the most expensive thing so they get a good tip. Great place to go just for food, with friends, and a definite yes for bringing a date! We came here for a family lunch and it was great! The service was amazing, attentive and very accommodating for our large group. The food was AMAZING. We had to wait a while for all the dishes to arrive, but it was well worth it. The portions were huge (I don't think anyone was able to finish their plate). The star of the show was the meatballs. They were the size of your fist and were melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Also, are perfect for sharing. Two meatballs can feed a family of four. Last night we had met friends at Vito's....not bad been before, don't know what all the fave is. We sat upstairs, very narrow steps going up not very good for people who are elderly. Chairs were very uncomfortable, your body just sinks right in. Friendly staff, ordered an Espresso Martini; my suggestion buy some descent martini glasses! When our martinis came to the table I was shocked on how small the glass was and barely any alcohol in it, it was literally like drinking an espresso 2 sips your done. Coming from Michigan, we were so disappointed We were a Party of 4 we all ordered different pizza's because everyone raves of Windsor pizza. We were all very disappointed, the pizza dough was still very raw on all 4. We didn't complain because it was busy and the waitress was doing her best. While I lived in Windsor, I tried a couple of pizzas at restaurants. Vito's definitely comes out on top. It's a wood oven pizza ( of course!); you can obviously customize your toppings but they have a great selection of popular pizzas as well! Their pasta may be a hit at times but seriously; the pizza does not disappoint. If you've got a group, split a Nutella pizza! You will not regret it! The only downside is that you'll need at least 2-3 days for reservations as the place is tiny. Although I've been able to get a seat at the pizza oven as a walk in with a few friends. Hands down the best Italian food I've had ever! I ordered spaghetti with meat sauce and my sister ordered pizza. The pasta was perfectly al dente topped with a delicious mix of ground meat and just the right amount of sauce. The server gave us a bowl of parmesan so we could take as much or as little as we wanted. My sister's margarita pizza was thin and seemed to have been cooked in a wood fired oven. We ended the meal with tiramisu, which, you guessed right, was the best I ever had AGAIN! Our server was excellent. He was quiet but uber attentive. He anticipated our needs, and our water glasses were never empty. We got lucky and were able to sit outside without waiting on a Wednesday night, because we saw a few large groups that wanted to sit inside needing to wait. My sister and I decided on this place after reading the great reviews. My sister and husband both had the spaghetti and I had the pizza. It was delicious!! We all cleaned our plates. Our waiter was very attentive even with our sitting out front on the sidewalk. I tend to find if you sit on the patio or away from the inside of a restaurant you get forgotten about. Our hosts made reservations well in advance because this place is always busy. They accommodated our request for a banquette or booth. Really liked the unusual light fixtures and the moody decor. The bathrooms are huge and can easily accommodate wheelchair users. Prices are reasonable for food and beverage items; London restos should take note of that. All of us were able to find something to suit, although none of us chose pizza, oddly. Two of our party had the cinghiale with tagliatelle special; big hit. The cozze pomodoro ($15) were an enormous portion, with a light tomato sauce and crusty bread to sop it up. I would have tried the but they contained an allergen. Another of us had the seafood pasta ($20); neither the seafood nor the pasta were overcooked as often happens in restos. The lasagna con verdura ($17) was flavourful with great texture; it, too, was an enormous portion with enough left over for lunch the following day. We saw but didn't order the arancini. It was so huge that we joked with the people at the adjacent table that they should give us the part that they couldn't eat - and they offered it to us! We saw at least five of these behemoths delivered to the tables immediately around us *as appetizers*. I wouldn't suggest ordering it unless you have at least four people who will indulge. Even the biggest eaters would be unlikely to eat even half of one plus a main. A bottle of J. Lohr cabernet sauvignon was $54 which represents a much lower mark-up than at most restos. The negroni ($12) was a good-sized pour, and well-executed. Richard made sure that everything came out hot and as ordered. There were no issues with allergens. He was friendly and made us feel welcomed, not rushed, although the place was packed and they shouldn't wanted to turn our table over as quickly as possible. read more

We no longer live in Windsor, so we don't get to Vitos as often as we used to. Our last experience was terrible. Food was great, customer service not so great. Had it been my first experience, I would never go back due to the service. Once we were seated, we sat for 15 minutes without anyone taking our order. Another table arrived, and they were immediately attended to. It probably took 5 minutes to get their drink order, so about 20 minutes into the experience someone came to our table. I ordered a drink and a dessert, they were okay. My husband ordered a few appetizers. Riceballs are my favourite, I wasn't feeling it. Somewhat soggy. I warmed up the leftovers the next day, and it was just okay, not to Vito standards. My co-worker also went (I'm not even going to talk about the terrible customer service experience she encountered. She took her boyfriend there for the first time, and he said he would not go back due to the service), she also ordered riceballs for us to have for lunch today. They were really salty. We will probably go one more time to see if things change, but I have a feeling that Vitos might lose it's ranking as my favourite eatery. read more

I had a pasta dish tonight (spaghetti bolognese), and pasta is typically something I order when I have a good appetite. I portion size I got wasn't much larger than my fist (and I have a small fist). And while I won't say the pasta is expensive, it's not cheap either: $16-20 and what is on your plate probably costed under $2. To make it remotely filling I had to put a ridiculous amount of parmesan cheese - but I'll give them the credit of leaving that on the table for us. No complaints about the service, but really, a spaghetti bolognese needs to be a reasonable size (especially for a guy), or I might as well go on pasta day to Boston Pizza or East Side Mario's instead. So overall, not impressed, and I would need to have a good reason to ever go back. read more

Have been here a few times since it became Vito's and many times before that. Frank Sinatra and oldies playing in the background, a very grounded calm atmosphere... Hmmm...the food. Yum. Everytime. This is not an extravagant fare-type restaurant but the food is delish. The very nice and important thing about this restaurant is that they will serve a main entree tapas style in smaller dishes for sharing. As my friends all know, I do not like someone's fork in my food nor on my plate, I don't care where their mouth hasn't been, sharing can be done with etiquette. Today we had Cozze Vino Blanco ( mussels), Brie al Forno ( apples, walnuts, brown sugar, honey), Gamberi a Prosciutto ( shrimp w/grande marnier), Insalata Cucina ( mixed mesclun, gorgonzola, panchetta, in a pear vinagrette), Piatto di Salmone( Norwegian salmon w/capers), Pesto Bruschetta w/goat cheese...Swordfish looked great but we skipped it. A lovely zinf that echoed hints of rasberries/chocolate...tannins not overly dramatic. No dessert. Too full. $120 for 3 people. Service faboosh. Ambience faboosh. We started with a shared plate of a meatball and a risotto ball. These are not small and could easily be a meal in themselves. They were very tasty!! We then had two panini's, the vegetarian and the veal parmigiana. Both were extremely tasty, and both way too big! You have to order their Caesar salad, the dressing is house made and this could be the best Caesar salad we've ever had!! If we lived in Windsor, this would be our favourite stop!! read more

This place is officially my favourite Italian restaurant in Windsor! Service is always great. Always checking in and very friendly. Great selection of wines and beers. But nothing tops the delicious food and portions are so big! The rice balls are a must! The meat sauce it comes with is so delicious. The portion is huge so be sure to share with someone. Vito's is quite good. It was booming, in fact, in the evening on Canada Day. It is located in the heart of Walkerville which seems to be an up and coming area. You can park in the lot across the street on Wyandotte for free, or you can park at the meters on the street. The whole area lends itself to window shopping and ambling. The ambiance is sort of stylish, but still very relaxed. We had a nice spot at a two-top/booth, and each table has a little candle. The mista salad was what you expect a mista salad to be. It is enough to share for 2-3 people. The dressing is a creamy, sort of balsamic concoction, which is good, but I think you ought to get it on the side. The pizza appears to be the main draw. The Palermo pizza is very tasty, with kalamata tapanade, goat cheese, and truffle oil. Lordy. The truffle oil is just sublime. The only downsides I think were the coke was completely uncarbonated, and the prices are a little high for good Italian. But, the food is tasty (which is the most important thing), and I'd definitely return to try some other pizzas and pastas. Service was great, and even the washrooms were impressive. read more

When I opened up the takeout container at my desk, I found the panini I had been craving, was for some reason today, served on hamburger buns. ??? Wholly disappointed. Enough to never go back. It would have been very different had they specified a lack of actual bread when the food was ordered. I would have ordered something different. Vito's has a friendly, quick waitstaff and a pretty dining area...and that's pretty much where my positive review ends. The food, prices, portion sizes, patrons and lack of convenience were all severely disappointing. I had a taste for bolognese so I ordered from their takeout menu about a week ago. The prices were really steep but they were open later and had glowing reviews so I ordered from them. I also ordered a brownie cheesecake slice. Both were complete let-downs. The portion sizes are...miniature at best for the outrageous price and the bolognese was tasteless. My "dinner" sized portion of bolognese was barely enough to fill me - a small woman - but the cost of it mirrored those of Beverly Hills prices and there was nothing to keep as leftovers. I was still hungry after having finished it; and I don't eat very much. Even in Beverly Hills you have leftovers! And the prices are the same! Joking aside the food was...mediocre at very best rescued only out of negative star status by the flavor and text the of the cheesecake (which wouldn't have filled my 4 year old). After traipsing out in the rain and traveling roundtrip, opening my food, seeing and tasting it the only thing I could think was "I want a refund but I'm hungry so I'll eat it". The cheesecake slice was the single redeeming item but it was a literal sliver that came in a massive takeout container. For nearly $8CA, the slice could have been 2x the size and it still would have been steep. Really disappointed by the cheesecake portion size. It was worth maybe...$2.50? It's kind of an issue that Vito's isn't listed with any of the on-demand takeout services like Grubhub and doesn't do personal delivery because I had to travel roundtrip from my place on the other side of town to pick it up and I did so because of the positive reviews and it was ultimately a big waste of time and money especially when I walked into the restaurant only to be stared at by the leering & pretentious crowd dining there. It was an incredibly uncomfortable experience as several people stared at me without breaks the entire time I waited for my food. They were unwelcoming and seemingly prejudiced. I had the semplice pizza and it was pretty good with a few complaints when compared to what you see in Italy or a really hooked up Italian place outside of Italy. Okay, so they don't use the soft buffalo mozzarella or salame picante, but let me say it is still a great pizza. The price is awesome for what you get and if they tried to get too authentic then the price would go up significantly. My wife is Italian and she had the tortellini and meatball soup and said it was just like she remembered in Sicily. All the prices are good here and the service was great. Was in the neighbourhood on Fathers Day with a very picky father and equally picky spouse. We decided to give this place a try strictly due to its location. Are we ever glad we did. Ambiance is upscale casual, a mix of dark colours with a huge pizza oven in the back corner. After perusing the varied menu, here's what we opted for: My spouse ordered the Scilian Pizza...it sounded delicious on the menu and was better than described. I also ordered the Sicilian Pizza..but rather than red onions i asked for hot Italian peppers. Let me say that the pizza was fantastic...perfectly cooked and the peppers added a nice heat. My father ordered a pasta dish with meat sauce (bolognaise). They asked what type of pasta he wanted (which was spaghetti). It came with a piece of garlic bread. This man is VERY picky and he raved about his meal....asking that I bring him back on our next trip down to Windsor. When I mentioned where we went to my sister-in-law, she said she loved this place and had wished they were free to have joined us. Prices were very reasonable considering portion size and quality.
