Sad. The star here is for the tea tasting experience, which is free and we walked in. The lady was very helpful and let us try different teas based on our curiosity and preferences. After some time, my friend and I bought our favorite teas. I unfortunately didn't check the quality of the product until I got home which is far from this location. I had gotten chrysanthemum tea dried flowers, a bag for $20, and it was full of bugs. :( this was very disappointing. Apparently it's a common bug for chrysanthemums though and my friend didn't have any issues with her tea bag (jasmine) so maybe just don't get the chrysanthemum.....It just soured the experience since we don't know if the chrysanthemum tea we tasted during the tasting was part of the same batch...plus i had to throw my bag away :( read more

Absolutely great free tasting experience with Kenny. He provided samples of probably 8 different teas and helped us learn about the different varieties of "tea." He is hilarious, let us linger, and didn't hustle us to buy more than we wanted. Such a fun, educational and tasty experience! read more

My partner and I stop by here every time we're in the city. We can't get enough of the wonderful tea and Kenny's big personality! Great shop to learn, laugh, and sip on some herbals, flowers, and tea! Pro tip: know the difference between the three and have an idea of what you like before you head in. read more

Just took my Berkeley team at Eisenmann Architecture on the SF Chinatown food tour, and my goodness this was the best stop. After the tour ended, we craved more! Chris is such a gem of information it was insane. I truly need to come back in a few weeks to take my mom, aunt and husband. I purchased two teas, and return back for more. Thank you Chris for being such a fabulous tea master! read more

I came here with my family and while the tea itself was interesting, the ambiance felt uncomfortable and confusing. The male staff member never greeted us or explained how things worked. He walked by discussing the tea and directing most of his attention to another group, while we were served tea without much interaction or guidance, which felt awkward rather than welcoming. When my brother asked about buying the tea we were drinking, we were told the smallest bag price. I understand quality tea can be expensive, but the way it was communicated felt abrupt, especially without any prior explanation of pricing or options. After we declined, the suggestion that we "split it three ways" was delivered in a way that felt smug and condescending, as if our hesitation was something to joke about rather than respect. Only toward the end were we directly asked if we wanted more tea, and it felt less like hospitality and more like a signal to move on. I later noticed other reviews mentioning feeling uncomfortable here, which unfortunately aligned with our experience. This may work well for people familiar with the process, but as first visitors, we didn't feel particularly welcomed. read more

Uncle Kenny was incredibly helpful. He has a wealth of knowledge and a fantastic sense of humor. He devoted time to educating us and introduced us to the tea we've been seeking for years! We adore going here with our friends, sharing laughter and uncovering new teas. We adore the quality of the loose tea here, bursting with freshness and natural aromatic with warm ambiance. read more

In a sometimes cruel and dark world, this tea shop and the staff behind it are a beacon of light. Seriously. You gotta go here. Even if you don't like tea, it will warm your soul. read more

Love this little gem. The free tastings are so informative and such a great experience. It really helps with deciding which tea to purchase. I am glad I read the reviews ahead of time though bc it does feel awkward when you first walk in bc no one really greets you or offers the free tasting, but once you ask they immediately find you a seat and ask what your favorite teas are, so they can include them in the tasting. Overall lovely experience. Highly recommend. read more

With all the good reviews on yelp, I was pretty stoked to go see it. It was me and my whole family so maybe he profiled us but we had the exact opposite experience as all the Yelpers here. He ignored our family and when we asked for service, he responded with "how many teas are you going to buy?". For the next few minutes he answered other customers but ignored us. It was an interesting dynamic as a regular of his came by and he was so nice. I would guess he's a guy who judges people in his shop just based on appearances of who he thinks will spend any money. The truth is that we like tea, and have gone to other teams shops in different cities and have always bought. But I wouldn't recommend anyone to put any money here. Find a different spot. Kenny ain't worth it read more

I am writing a review to brag about Chris, the tea 'zen' master. I have zero idea about teas, and Chris brought his A game to the table. He was easy to understand, entertaining, and quite charismatic. He taught our group all about the way tea should be consumed. I love his analogies too; he had a charm about him, and he was also an excellent storyteller. I highly recommend this shop and Chris to anyone ! Sincerely , M. Al-Saleh read more

I had a great time with Kenny. He knows teas and he's hilarious without pretentiousness. My regular shop was closed today in Chinatown so I wondered into Vital. Kenny drew me in and we bantered as a few foreign visitors observed a bit mystified. I recommend the newby to try this shop and perhaps make a purchase. Or if you're visiting try some teas and make a small purchase. They have everything and at a fair price. I bought a raw (unoxidised)puer cake, a compressed firm of tea from Yunnan, China, and an extremely grassy green tea called Green Aroma. I also tried an herbal tea called Blue Tea, which is not a tea ( all tea is from one plant--Camellia sinensis) but gynostemma, a kind of vine, and bought a small bag hoping it will help my athletic activity, and arthritis. What a great 30 minutes in Chinatown. Kenny you the Teaman! read more

This was such a splendid surprise to my Chinatown trip! Free tea tasting of four kinds (white, green, red, and oolong tea!) Every type was so fragrant and delectable! Chris was very knowledgeable and awesome! We really appreciated the fantastic service and tasty teas. Would recommend to come and visit!

Yeah the dude here definitely profiles customers when they come in. He will spend all his time and energy on certain customers and will be completely rude to and ignore others. And honestly I don't think its anything too nefarious but rather who he thinks is gullible enough to "charm" and "make laugh" in order to get a good sale. At the end of the day he's a salesman so it's whatever but dude definitely loves to hear himself talk. read more

How does one write about perfection? VITAL TEA LEAF is part tea house, part tea store, part education center and part wholesome entertainment. All told? Perfection The proprietor, Kenny, is an encyclopedic wealth of information. Tea prices start at very reasonable (and quickly go up from there). The information offered is invalauable. And for those that are "curious" or want to learn more, the staff is faultlessly knowledgeable and patient. Kenny can get...... prickly...... (justifiably so, in my opinion) when people wonder in and ask silly questions or belittle the merchandise. You are warned! VITAL TEA does not do mass produced tea or any old garbage, like the mess flogged by a certain now-shuttered big tea company that was in every American mall a few years ago. For the most part, teas come from small estate "artisnal" outfits -- and should be regarded as such. I visited once with a dear friend & her husband. That was Friday on a crisp San Francisco autumn day. I made a pilgrimage back two days later. All told I came away with 9 very different packages of tea. Suffice it to say dinner parties have ended with "ooohs" and aaaahs" when Kenny's selections have been (very selectively) trotted out for out preferred guests. Bottom line: for health, for enjoyment, to upgrade knowledge, VITAL TEA is a must add to one's list. read more

The staff here was great, down to earth, Kenny was outright funny! If you want to get totally humiliated, tell him you want milk and sugar in your tea. But, honestly, it was likely the most educational and interesting part of our trip. read more

Sat and KENNY said "what are you doing?" I said I would like tea. He was so rude and said we don't serve tea. And once I told him what herbs I wanted he acted like he didn't understand. And I pointed to the herbs and he still couldn't . KENNY was extremely rude. I wouldn't be surprised if it's some legal stuff because he wouldn't help me get tea. read more

Unique, educational and FUN immersive way to experience a variety of teas! The tasting is free with no pressure to purchase afterwards. Love this place! I am fairly new to enjoying fine teas as I usually just buy whatever is on the shelves at the local grocery store but I came across this shop that stocks interesting loose leaf and this is the spot! The man who assisted me was very knowledgeable and helped me select some great options to try at home. I've tried two so far and they're very nice. The atmosphere is very cozy inside and immaculately clean. Looking forward to returning someday to take advantage of more yummy teas. read more

Genuinely confused as to why I received such poor service. I entered the room looking to do a few tastings and purchase my favorite, but it seemed like me walking in was more of an inconvenience to them. I was expected to know the exact teas I wanted to try (no recommendations given here), and every question I had was greeted with a short non-answers. He kept going on about how he hated dealing with customers like me which was so confusing considering I was literally nothing but polite, curious, and respectful. Since I was the only customer in the store at that time, it made it an insanely awkward situation that I had to take myself away from. For something that was supposed to be the highlight of my day, it ended up ruining it and leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe experiences will differ depending on the person or the day, but just know that you're not guaranteed to leave the store in a good mood. read more

My wife and I walked by and saw a tea tasting, so we decided to pop in and try. We were floored by how knowledgeable and enthusiastic Chris was. He took the time to allow us to try many different teas and explained the origin in detail of each one. He answered all of our questions and really personalized the experience. We left with two bags of tea that and two big smiles! If you are in Chinatown, you should definitely stop in. read more

I came in the other day to purchase a teapot set and picked one out with my parents. Eventually we decided to purchase some tea as well and Kenny was very helpful! Kenny took out several variations of the tea set I had my eye on from the back and I got to take a look at a few patterns. I'm very happy with the design I picked out. We got to taste Royal Puerh which is my personal favorite and decided to purchase 1/2. I'm looking forwarding to coming back and trying other teas in the future. Once I got home, I noticed the quality of the teacups as they're double insulated towards the middle which means the tea won't burn your fingers. Very high quality! I can't wait to come back. read more

Stopped here during a Chinatown Walking Food Tour and was excited for the experience. The tea and education were excellent, but I couldn't get over how rude the owner/uncle/92yo man was. During my short stay, he made off putting jokes that were quite offensive. I was extremely uncomfortable and, even though I liked the tea, didn't feel like supporting his business. I hope the tour company picks a different local place to support. read more

My husband, teenage kid and I wandered in here on Sunday. When asked what kind of tea we were looking for, we asked, "What's good?" With an arched eyebrow, Kenny, the tea master, gave us an earful. We were hooked. I know next to nothing about tea. That didn't matter to Kenny, because he's more than willing to teach if you're willing to learn. He's got a sharp tongue, a sharp wit, and can make a great cup of tea with his eyes closed. We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided to go again today and were not disappointed. He was as lively, friendly and funny as yesterday. We bought some more tea to take home back to Texas and bid our new friend goodbye. We'll be back, though. Go for the tea, stay for Kenny. read more

I've been looking for a great tea spot since I moved to the city and took the opportunity to stop at this shop when a friend was in town for a visit. We were lucky to visit during a time where they weren't super busy and were able to join the current tea tasting that was going on. Chris walked us through each tea we tasted, welcomed us the opportunity to ask any questions we had and provided valuable tea education along the way.
