Sad. The star here is for the tea tasting experience, which is free and we walked in. The lady was very helpful and let us try different teas based on our curiosity and preferences. After some time, my friend and I bought our favorite teas. I unfortunately didn't check the quality of the product until I got home which is far from this location. I had gotten chrysanthemum tea dried flowers, a bag for $20, and it was full of bugs. :( this was very disappointing. Apparently it's a common bug for chrysanthemums though and my friend didn't have any issues with her tea bag (jasmine) so maybe just don't get the chrysanthemum.....It just soured the experience since we don't know if the chrysanthemum tea we tasted during the tasting was part of the same batch...plus i had to throw my bag away :( read more

I am glad I read the reviews ahead of time though bc it does feel awkward when you first walk in bc no one really greets you or offers the free tasting, but once you ask they immediately find you a seat and ask what your favorite teas are, so they can include them in the tasting. With all the good reviews on yelp, I was pretty stoked to go see it. It was me and my whole family so maybe he profiled us but we had the exact opposite experience as all the Yelpers here. He ignored our family and when we asked for service, he responded with "how many teas are you going to buy?". For the next few minutes he answered other customers but ignored us. It was an interesting dynamic as a regular of his came by and he was so nice. I would guess he's a guy who judges people in his shop just based on appearances of who he thinks will spend any money. The truth is that we like tea, and have gone to other teams shops in different cities and have always bought. But I wouldn't recommend anyone to put any money here. Find a different spot. I had a great time with Kenny. He knows teas and he's hilarious without pretentiousness. My regular shop was closed today in Chinatown so I wondered into Vital. Kenny drew me in and we bantered as a few foreign visitors observed a bit mystified. I recommend the newby to try this shop and perhaps make a purchase. Or if you're visiting try some teas and make a small purchase. They have everything and at a fair price. I bought a raw (unoxidised)puer cake, a compressed firm of tea from Yunnan, China, and an extremely grassy green tea called Green Aroma. I also tried an herbal tea called Blue Tea, which is not a tea ( all tea is from one plant--Camellia sinensis) but gynostemma, a kind of vine, and bought a small bag hoping it will help my athletic activity, and arthritis. Perfection The proprietor, Kenny, is an encyclopedic wealth of information. Tea prices start at very reasonable (and quickly go up from there). The information offered is invalauable. And for those that are "curious" or want to learn more, the staff is faultlessly knowledgeable and patient. Kenny can get...... prickly...... (justifiably so, in my opinion) when people wonder in and ask silly questions or belittle the merchandise. You are warned! VITAL TEA does not do mass produced tea or any old garbage, like the mess flogged by a certain now-shuttered big tea company that was in every American mall a few years ago. For the most part, teas come from small estate "artisnal" outfits -- and should be regarded as such. I visited once with a dear friend & her husband. That was Friday on a crisp San Francisco autumn day. I made a pilgrimage back two days later. All told I came away with 9 very different packages of tea. Suffice it to say dinner parties have ended with "ooohs" and aaaahs" when Kenny's selections have been (very selectively) trotted out for out preferred guests. Genuinely confused as to why I received such poor service. I entered the room looking to do a few tastings and purchase my favorite, but it seemed like me walking in was more of an inconvenience to them. I was expected to know the exact teas I wanted to try (no recommendations given here), and every question I had was greeted with a short non-answers. He kept going on about how he hated dealing with customers like me which was so confusing considering I was literally nothing but polite, curious, and respectful. Since I was the only customer in the store at that time, it made it an insanely awkward situation that I had to take myself away from. For something that was supposed to be the highlight of my day, it ended up ruining it and leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I came in the other day to purchase a teapot set and picked one out with my parents. Eventually we decided to purchase some tea as well and Kenny was very helpful! Kenny took out several variations of the tea set I had my eye on from the back and I got to take a look at a few patterns. I'm very happy with the design I picked out. We got to taste Royal Puerh which is my personal favorite and decided to purchase 1/2. I'm looking forwarding to coming back and trying other teas in the future. My husband, teenage kid and I wandered in here on Sunday. When asked what kind of tea we were looking for, we asked, "What's good?" With an arched eyebrow, Kenny, the tea master, gave us an earful. We were hooked. I know next to nothing about tea. That didn't matter to Kenny, because he's more than willing to teach if you're willing to learn. He's got a sharp tongue, a sharp wit, and can make a great cup of tea with his eyes closed. We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided to go again today and were not disappointed. He was as lively, friendly and funny as yesterday. We bought some more tea to take home back to Texas and bid our new friend goodbye. We'll be back, though. Go for the tea, stay for Kenny. read more

Stopped here during a Chinatown Walking Food Tour and was excited for the experience. The tea and education were excellent, but I couldn't get over how rude the owner/uncle/92yo man was. During my short stay, he made off putting jokes that were quite offensive. I was extremely uncomfortable and, even though I liked the tea, didn't feel like supporting his business. I've been looking for a great tea spot since I moved to the city and took the opportunity to stop at this shop when a friend was in town for a visit. We were lucky to visit during a time where they weren't super busy and were able to join the current tea tasting that was going on.
