I scored a good deal on Groupon, picked up a bottle of wine, and we headed to the studio on a Friday night. We got to use the airbrush and even spray paint on our master pieces this time. And, as always, Alex made the night fun, engaging, and creative, and we all ended up with a great painting of happy little trees to take home and brag about. Now, can I remember everything we did? Paint, scavenger hunt, paint, view a couple short videos of Alex's work (amazing), paint, roof view of Boise and foothills, paint, and adding a layer to the splatter paint room. Bring plenty of wine because it's going to be a long, fun evening.

Problem with that, is that they never got back to me about fixing said picture. Never even acknowledged that I had submitted a service request. We parked in front of the coffee shop we were visiting that morning and walked over with our drinks. There were a lot of folks taking photos with the murals. Freak Alley Gallery is literally an alley tucked between buildings in downtown Boise, filled with…read moregraffiti, murals, and while we were there, what appeared to be a makeshift dragon sculpture that an artist was displaying as a temporary installation. The alley is not necessarily something I would make the destination, but it's definitely a cool little spot to visit if you're already in the area. It's a free open air museum of curiosity. It's a very short walk, and the buildings provide quite a bit of shade, so you're not necessarily being hit by the sun the whole time. It's perfect for passing some time while waiting for something nearby, walking off a meal, or, in our case, killing some time before heading to an escape room. One of the things I found most interesting was the history. Near the beginning of the alley is a piece that documents many of the events and dates associated with Freak Alley over the years. It gives you a sense that this isn't just random graffiti--it's been an evolving space for artists to express themselves for years. There's still wall space available, so I imagine the gallery will continue changing as new murals and artwork are added. In that way, it feels a little like an outdoor museum that's never completely finished. Not necessarily a "go to Boise just for this" attraction, but definitely an interesting little detour and something worth walking through while you're downtown.

Luckily, I rarely forget experiences...especially one like my first experience blowing glass. What an INCREDIBLE time we all had here. Like so many who have recently wanted to try this...I watched Blown Away on Netflix. For the record tho...ever since I was a kid and we went on a field trip to the Corning Museum of Glass I have ALWAYS wanted to get into glass blowing. I think I could actually create some beautiful pieces IF I actually jumped in and started doing it. I've wanted for years to do it. So when you have a passion like that...I feel like you give it your all and then some. This past Winter I finally tried. We just made drinking glasses. Which is fine. It was a good start. Oh, when I started watching Blown Away, that show helped me confirm that I have waited long enough to try this haha. So a group of us went. There's 5 of us in our little circle of close friends. That made it extra special for me: Ok! The studio is very well laid out. Displays are absolutely beautiful. There is plenty to look at whether you are there to shop or you're there waiting for your class to begin. Look at all of it. It's all so inspiring. People create those pieces! Which just makes me think even more how amazing humans are! The people who work up front, incredibly nice. This place is run beautifully. The layout is next level, cleanliness...again, next level. The Hot Shop is great. Totally different than I was expecting. You see them on Blown Away, online, other various studios and you kinda expect them to be these hot boxes lol. This one is very open, not hot at all. I dressed in all kinds of booty shorts, tank bc I have neuropathy and heat makes the pain ...super intense. Even when I stood at the glory hole turning the rod (lol) to set in the colors and shape the piece, my neuropathy didn't bother me at all. Now, I'm sure if you were there for awhile, making bigger pieces, etc that you'd break a sweat. All of us tho stayed relatively dry for the duration of our class time. Wonderful experience. I still can't get over HOW. MUCH. FUN. THIS. WAS!! Josh was our instructor. What an amazing guy. I feel like we really lucked out getting him as our instructor. Super chill, easy to talk to, he wasn't judgey at all for all us 100% amateurs haha. Just an all around great guy. I kinda had a low key crush on him haha! He has this incredible beard too. Made me jealous. I can't grow one like that haha Anyway! Josh has been doing this a long time. Works at 2 studios here in Boise/Garden City area. VERY knowledgeable. Explains the process absolutely perfectly. It's always fun for me to see someone like Josh and love what he does. It's very obvious how much he enjoys what he does and I believe that added to the amazing time we had there. The pricing...well, I leave that up to yall to look up haha. It's glass blowing ffs lol, so expect to pay. Maybe that's why I haven't started it ... yet. It's an experience hobby. I hate calling it a hobby tho especially bc I'd like to get into and have it more than just a hobby. It's one of those experiences I've always wanted to try, finally did, and felt pure joy in my soul. It just made me so happy. I'm sure when/if you try it..you'll feel the same way. There's nothing like it. And even tho we just did drinking glasses, I look at my piece and think....damn! I created this! Green and brown are my favorite colors..:especially together. My piece was darker than the others. They give you a selection to choose from. They're nice choices, but I wanted to create my own with my own colors and own swirling type design. So much fun! Local performers are the cast. If you are anything but a senior citizen, you might be the only one under 55. Seats are a little weary. Stages tend to be simple. Lighting and sound are fine Large lobby area with a bar helps with intermission. Plenty of parking. Two good Asian restaurants in the same strip mall. A Bosnian sandwich shop is a culinary change of pace. One of the best dive bars in all of Boise, the Navajo Room, is also in the same strip.

This theatre is very cute and has a nice layout that's easy to navigate where you're going.. I also appreciate the bar with a fair selection of canned drinks and they do a couple themed drinks for the shows. One is typically an Italian soda that can be be made with a shot of vodka or nonalcoholic. I think it would serve them well to add a 3rd option for themed cocktails but I can see why they want to keep it simple for the bar employees who get quite busy on show nights. One down fall is they have no food concessions whatsoever. They put out a small plate of store bought cookies at the bar for intermission but they go super fast... and they are just the Keebler cookies so really nothing all that special so be sure to eat before you come here. The shows they put on are great quality especially the one my fiancé and I went to most recently.. Santa Clause conquers the martians! It's honestly the BEST stage prodution I've seen thus far and I've seen A LOT of amazing theatre productions!! I got a great deal for this show as I volunteered for a day here recently at the box office. When you volunteer they'll give you a free show ticket. I'm not sure if I'll volunteer as a box office attendant here again... while I overall enjoyed it, things did get overwhelming up front at one point and I needed assistance from my supervisor who was helping out at the bar. She definitely gave me a hard time for that after my volunteer shift was up but I do understand her frustration with me, I can't blame her for wanting everything to run smoothly when i forgot how to do a couple tasks that she showed me during training. I recommend being a volunteer for community theatre but unless you are very tech savvy, I'd suggest volunteering as an usher at Boise Little Theater instead as that's much easier and you can still see a show for free. Overall it's a great playhouse and I look forward to returning in the new year!
