I grabbed 2 bottles of buffalo trace and she shouted at me that I could only get one. I immediately said "sorry, I didn't realize" and went and put the bottle back up without hesitation. She continued to shout at me that there was a sign (there wasn't any clear signage of this, it was on extremely small text on the tag next to the sku!). I said there wasn't and she pointed to the small text, to which I said "nobody is reading that" and continued to purchase my bottle with the other (much nicer) employee at the cashier. I ended up getting my second bottle anyways when my partner purchased it, ya know - since it's one per person :)

I had some time to explore around the Shops At Eastfield Village last weekend when in Charlotte,…read moreand went into Carolina Country Wines. What a find...if you are in the mood to have a glass of wine and kick back for a bit, enjoy a snack, or just browse/shop for some wine to take home-this is your place. I sat down at the small bar set up in the back, a very nicely decorated and cozy shop with a small bar combination. After looking over the menu of by the glass selections, I chose the Makulu Moscato from South Africa. It was A++, great wine. They also have some small snack items available such as cheese, crackers, other various items. I chose the Italian Mixed Snack Plate, which had various Italian meat samples wrapped around mozzarella cheese with crackers on the side. Perfect to have with a glass of wine and chill. It hit the spot. Also, the owners were there and I got to discuss wine, travel, and food with them. It shows that Bernie and Terri love their shop, the passion for wine and food, and like sharing the experiences. There was a wonderful white wine available during their afternoon wine tasting that I sampled, the Tohu Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, that was a good contrast to my first wine I enjoyed. It had a tropical fruit, almost grapefruit even type of impression. Terri stated it was the lemongrass influence that is incorporated into the wine. Another good find. The cozy shop is filled with many varieties of wine to peruse and consider taking home. The shop is just the right size, not too big...not too small. There is also an a outside seating area in front of the shop as well. In all, I took home a bottle of the Moscato I had and was very satisfied with my experience at CCW. Bottom line: Great wine shop experience. Love the small bar area in the back. Owners have a passion for what they do and it shows. A definite must-stop if in the Shops of Eastfield Village area of CLT.

We also grabbed some Cuve this time, along with the spiced old fashioned mix, yum! Davis is a winery/distillery combo. One side of the massive building is a small wine tasting room,…read morewhile the other side offers a distillery tasting. The middle is a warehouse. Davis has 45 acres of vines - which is actually a huge planting. They seem to specialize in Chambourcin and other hybrid grapes, like Steuben, Marshal Foch, as well as some Pinot Noir (which grows decently in the area) and Chardonnay. Prices were very reasonable, although they tended to serve sweet and semi sweet styles, which isn't my thing The wine was OK, but I LOVED the distillery. I had a very brief, off-the-cuff tour, followed by a tasting. The maple bourbon was excellent and lives up to its name (I bought a bottle). But I also liked their moonshines, especially the apple. The 'heritage' bourbon was spicy, which was interesting but not for me.

We were told we could select 3 wines to sample. What they didn't explain was that my husband and I were to share those samples...we weren't allowed to each select 3. The staff member stood in silence as we sampled the wines, offering no information on what we were sampling. Very awkward and rude. Neither of us cared for the wines we selected. The distillery staff member was a slight improvement over the winery tasting, but not enough to save the rating. He was friendly enough, but didn't care for the spirits either. I wouldn't recommend to someone traveling through.

Their cocktails were abundant and there was a wide variety for every palate. You can get a cocktail to sip on throughout the tour as well as some popcorn to munch on. She also does the ghost tours in Mt Airy and we can't wait to go back and have her show us around downtown! The actual tasting after the tour was the most bang for your buck. We had the BEST time at Mayberry Spirits. This is probably the best distillery tour I've ever done…read more Our tour guide, Kate, was everything you'd want in a guide! She was extremely knowledgeable, personable, tons of personality and completely informative. I loved how they have a board showing the boiling points of the components in their spirits and they had tons of visuals (the sorghum they use in their whisky, two jars of different proof whisky that demonstrated the difference in appearance when shaken, pieces of the barrel components) it was very interactive, informative and fun! We were there a little early, so we got cocktails (which come with popcorn!) I love that they do have the cocktail option, because many distilleries offer only the spirits stand-alone (I can't hang) and I enjoyed the Dutch Apple Pie I ordered. I appreciated they even went a step further with super nice presentation of the drinks! You can take your cocktails into the distillery room and sip while you enjoy the tour. After the tour, we went back to the main area for a tasting! This was a treat. They have ample areas for the 4 groups doing the tour to taste. Our group of 5 gathered round the barrel to embark on the tasting. It has cute little Mayberry Spirits shot glasses already placed for us, along with a dump bucket & water. First, we tasted the 3 spirits stand-alone. I don't really like straight alcohol, but I enjoyed the vanilla whisky. After those, it's not over! We got to try several cocktail shooters. Some with Cheerwine, some with bitters (they had tons of flavors, everyone got to pick their flavor and add their own!) I really enjoyed the concoctions they presented! They had so many great gifts for purchase as well! They offer cocktail kits that include their spirits and all the necessary mixers! We all agreed we want to come back to get Christmas gifts! I was completely shocked at the value of what we got at Mayberry Spirits! The cocktails were $10 across the board - super reasonable, especially considering the quality/presentation. The tour and tasting was $12 total! I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was $20 considering the great 20-30 minute tour we got and the generous tasting, PLUS the souvenir shot glass! This was such a fun experience and a great place to go with a group!
