Carpet goes from maroon to green. Sun bleached from the bright afternoon sun. Boy wonder when the last time the carpet was changed.
    Werner W.

Back to the Future. Built in 1986 and aside of "new" flat screen TVs and a USB adapter not much has changed since this place was built. Stayed here August 20-22, 2021 in room 308. SO, FIRST THE GOOD: Location is right of the highway and within walking distance or short shuttle ride to the Winter Park skis slopes, restaurants and activities. There is ample parking that was free, but due to the many pay stations may require a fee during the winter (that may be for non-hotel guests, not sure). The cabriolet gondola that takes you from the hotel directly to the ski area was closed for repairs, but there was a shuttle bus every 20 minutes. We stayed in a studio suite which was a bit larger with a kitchen, seating area and dining area. Everything you need was there. They allow pets for a $35 fee for the stay, give you extra sheets to cover the furniture and a tag for your door so housekeeping is aware there is a dog. There is however no housekeeping during your stay if you have a dog. Seen some previous comments here on the rudeness of the staff. The people checking us in and every other interaction with hotel staff was great for us. The guys at the front desk were friendly, and each time I had a question, it was answered with a smile. During our stay - based on the parking lot the hotel seemed rather full - we never heard neighbors or someone above or under us. We did hear kids in the pool being quite loud each night but that ended at 8:00 p.m. so not too bad. Also, stellar views of the surrounding mountains. About a 5 or so mile drive to the nearest Safeway in Frazer. NOW THE NOT SO GOOD. The hotel was built in 1986 and it shows. I don't think there have been any updates to the hotel since it was built, aside of the "new" flat screen TVs and the USB adapter. Although it appeared clean, our room really showed its age with frayed carpet, damaged walls, and not enough plugs for the modern traveler. The carpet in the room started as maroon by the entry and slowly faded into green carpet where the sun had bleached it over the years. There was carpet in part of the bathroom (yuk) and it was frayed.. Part of the carpet by the bed had been torn or removed and was covered up by a carpet runner. Damage to the wall in the kitchen and by the fireplace (which incidentally didn't work). There is no AC and facing the afternoon sun or room was quite uncomfortable upon arrival (and the blinds were closed). The hotel does provide a fan for circulation. Even with the windows open at night and 40F, the room never really cooled off. Even though the hotel has a very strict non-smoking or pot policy, the lobby smelled like pot all of Saturday afternoon through late at night. IN WRAP UP Great location, needs a refresh badly, but perhaps when you stay here, you don't come for the hotel, but for the outdoor activities both in summer or winter.

If I could give this hotel a zero, I would. It was est. in 1986 and it hasn't been updated since 1986. No room service of any kind during the stay. The place smelled like old and air freshener. Very disappointing for close to $300/night. Would definitely not recommend. Winter park resort was great though.

The position of the sun at 6:15am is directly in this window, which directly shines on the heads of the beds.

Clean, beds were comfortable, staff were helpful and friendly. However, at 6am the sun shines directly in the window arch, which has no shade. The position of the sun shines directly in the window at the head of the bed. Impossible for kids to sleep in and I just applied sunscreen as my face melts into my pillow. If you're staying on a east facing room, bring in the sun shade from your car and cover the window. As a business offer a solution so I'm not tempted to nail towels to the trim boards.

Scratches on walls in our room. Never coming back.

The xc skiing at Devil's Thumb has always been a favorite for us, as far back as the 70's when it was just a rustic ski trail system with a small nordic supply shop. In recent years it became a full fledged resort with lodging where we have often stayed. We have also stayed in Winter Park, about 15 minutes away and driven over to ski. But we have now found our new favorite option. This is such a lovely place, both the facility and the charming staff. It is a better price value for us than some of the other options in the area, yet more than a simple motel in town. You know, like Goldilocks, "just right." I especially want to note that the (included) breakfast that host John cooks for the guests was wonderful, some sweet, some savory, warm, homemade, natural and ample for the start of even an hearty ski day. They take note in advance of special food needs and serve with a choice of time options. The log style of the building is rustic but nicely furnished. The rooms are well designed and furnished with high quality linens and have lots of storage as some guests stay for weeks. The views from each room are very pretty, some to the Continental Divide, some to the woodland. Every single staff member was friendly and helpful. The central lounge area was large, comfortable, attractive and clean and with a central fireplace. There are also some other smaller gathering areas to sit and talk or read if you wish to be outside your room. And there are also some family and dog friendly cabins on site if you want more than a bedroom. Personally, the rooms in the main inn are just right for my needs. We will absolutely be back. It is convenient to local xc skiing and also just a 15 minute drive past the Winter Park Resort and not far at all from several quality dinner options. We met other guests using the lodging for all of these reasons.

They also have their own shuttle that takes you right to the Winter Park Ski lift. I have been coming to this lodge for years and I've never had one bad experience. Ultimately I would have much preferred to have overnighted in the town of Grand Lake, Colorado...a lot closer to Rocky Mountain, NP. Unfortunately rooms were ultra expensive in that quaint little town, so I "bit the bullet" and drove 35 miles away to stay here in Winter Park. I spent $100 plus tax for a Friday night. I was pleasantly surprised how big the room was. Besides 2 queen sized beds, accommodations included a lounge chair, plenty of closet space and an extended area for the bathroom. The spaciousness of the room was absolutely the best part of the motel! I checked in relatively late evening (8pm) and there were no issues. Parking was free and right in the back of the building. Valley Hi is located in the center of Winter Park with plenty of options for food all over town. There is free continental breakfast and coffee offered in the morning with your stay but the following day I had a long drive and grabbed food on the road. Although I was ideally looking for accommodations within the confines of the western part of Rocky Mountain National Park, Valley Hi Motel was more than a suffice place to put my head down and rest for the evening. If you're exploring in the Winter Park/Fraser area, I'd give the green light to come here.

Rooms were clean and well maintained, and had all of the basics you would need. Everything related to a ski day was nice here - had storage for skis and boots so that you didn't have to bring them to your room. In the morning they have a nice spread for breakfast including fruit and cereal, and also have some hot items including eggs, toast, sausage, and bacon. Definitely enough to get you fueled and ready for the day. Then there is a van they run that takes you right to the gondola leaving at 8:30, 9, 9:30. Taking the first van gets you there right for the start of day. And you don't have to worry about parking, walking, and paying at the resort. Rides back were at 3:15 and 4:15 which gave plenty of time at the mountain. I didn't get a chance to try the hot tub but it looked nice. There were some cozy spots in the lounge with fireplaces to sit and relax. And a ping pong table that a few kids were using to stay entertained. Parking here was convenient, and the location is good; very close to everything in Winter Park. Overall I was very impressed with this stay. We read about the place needing updating, but we decided to give it a try anyway. Thursday afternoon arrival and we were allowed to check in early and found out there was covered garage parking! Nice. The whole place is keyless utilizing coded entryways and we were pleasantly surprised to find a clean and cozy room with a terrific kitchenette complete with granite counters and stocked with dishes & cookware. We had unit 1033 and the Murphy bed was amazingly comfortable for two tall people and the sofa had a pull-out sleeper too. The decorations were nice and very homey with an overall skiing/sledding theme. We liked it. The entire resort's workout area was neat and clean as were their showers/saunas. The pool area has a half in/half out heated swimming pool and two large hot tubs. Very nice area, especially after our day of skiing and wanting a hot tub to relax our muscles. Here's the not so stellar items; our bathroom sink did not drain well, the light over the Murphy bed was out and the windows don't open. But nothing horrible. Last but not least is the convenience of an on-site restaurant, La Collina. Over-priced & overcooked and not very good food from a small, limited menu is what we got. Ugh. Underwhelming. Next time we're going into town for much better selections. Overall, we'd like to return during ski season and maybe even summertime, but do NOT eat at the restaurant.
