Poor excuse for a full breakfast.
Katherine S.

Most uncomfortable night of my travel life, and I had no sleep all night because of how uncomfortable the bed is! Pillows had no substance to them, and I kept feeling like I was going to fall out of the bed because it was sloped to the side. Then went to breakfast and were terribly disappointed, expecting a hot breakfast but instead finding only yogurt and granola bars one day, and yogurt and packaged cereal bowls the next. Ended up having to go out and find breakfast elsewhere because of a dairy-free diet and no options. On the first day we were told they didn't have a full breakfast because their truck couldn't get over the pass. BS. It was July 1 and there was no snow or even rain that day, and having the same day 2 confirmed we had been lied to about what to expect. The number of tour busses parked around the torn up parking lot suggests they are only staying open because of tour companies finding the cheapest deal they can for groups, and I have do doubt that without those tour busses this place would never make it. At the hot tub the handles are zip tied to 2x4 pieces of wood, then nailed into the wooden steps. Evidence of cheap minimal as possible upkeep and maintenance. Leaving the luggage kept getting caught on the broken threshold that pulled up and stuck to our wheels. Unmaintained concrete and torn up sidewalks open this up to dozens or safety problems. The signs at the front desk indicate the restaurant is open, which is where breakfast is, and we had to question how the restaurant could serve a meal, but hotel guests are denied the advertised breakfast. Ceiling leaks throughout the corridors left us feeling we had picked someplace the owners give absolutely no concern for guest comfort and welfare. Only positive we could find was the young ladies running the front desk and guest service were trying very hard, and continually apologizing for the issues that kept arising. They were very kind and clearly trying since they are the faces we interact with. I feel so terrible the owners would put them in such a bad position to try and make excuses for their poor business practice

I want to be VERY clear.. The 2 stars is for the view out the restaurant ( 5 for the view -3 for a TERRIBLE HOTEL ) .... We came up here for the entire weekend of the Winter Park Jazz Fest...we have stayed in hotels in Breckenridge, Vail, Avon all great hotels...The Winter Park Mountain Lodge is the biggest DUMP I have ever seen in my entire travels!!! At almost $400 a night ( the jack up the price because they know they have THOUSANDS of black folks coming to listen to jazz ) .... The front desk are all rude, except a nice guy with a southern accent, long hair and glasses....the restaurant has 5 items ( yes 5 ) on their menu...for me and my 2 little kids it was $70 for dinner....they let animals be here, so when I got on the elevator I was face-to-face with someone coming on the next floor with a big PIT BULL.... The pool was freezing ( in the middle of JULY ) broken glass, broken hot tub, broken tiles, all around the pool and entire building... they take all of the money from the up-charged rooms and put it where???? Rooms were not even dusted, let alone cleaned and...before you wonder...all of the items mentioned were brought up to the staff who do NOT care and give you some corporate schpiel about the hotel... Believe all the bad reviews and do NOT STAY HERE!!!

We came to celebrate our 7 year anniversary. Donna and Brian were so thoughtful and professional. They made sure we had everything we needed and wanted for our stay. Breakfast each morning was so delicious. Donna could have made it as a professional chef! We stayed in a dog friendly cabin, what fun to bring along our pup! Cabin was cozy, warm and the snow was shoveled each day for us.

The xc skiing at Devil's Thumb has always been a favorite for us, as far back as the 70's when it was just a rustic ski trail system with a small nordic supply shop. In recent years it became a full fledged resort with lodging where we have often stayed. We have also stayed in Winter Park, about 15 minutes away and driven over to ski. But we have now found our new favorite option. This is such a lovely place, both the facility and the charming staff. It is a better price value for us than some of the other options in the area, yet more than a simple motel in town. You know, like Goldilocks, "just right." I especially want to note that the (included) breakfast that host John cooks for the guests was wonderful, some sweet, some savory, warm, homemade, natural and ample for the start of even an hearty ski day. They take note in advance of special food needs and serve with a choice of time options. The log style of the building is rustic but nicely furnished. The rooms are well designed and furnished with high quality linens and have lots of storage as some guests stay for weeks. The views from each room are very pretty, some to the Continental Divide, some to the woodland. Every single staff member was friendly and helpful. The central lounge area was large, comfortable, attractive and clean and with a central fireplace. There are also some other smaller gathering areas to sit and talk or read if you wish to be outside your room. And there are also some family and dog friendly cabins on site if you want more than a bedroom. Personally, the rooms in the main inn are just right for my needs. We will absolutely be back. It is convenient to local xc skiing and also just a 15 minute drive past the Winter Park Resort and not far at all from several quality dinner options. We met other guests using the lodging for all of these reasons.

We woke up in the morning before skiing and hiking and there was an amazing breakfast made on the table for us. Dinner was FANTASTIC! The first night we were there we had soup, salad, bread, steak, and two sides and to top it off DELICIOUS dessert. Every day breakfast and dinner was amazing - we didn't want to leave and come back to reality haha! Who wants to cook their own breakfast or dinner after a full day of skiing and activities? Not me!! They also have their own shuttle that takes you right to the Winter Park Ski lift. I have been coming to this lodge for years and I've never had one bad experience. The staff is also super friendly and helpful and the rooms were very cozy. Thank you Jeanine for such a great stay!

Ultimately I would have much preferred to have overnighted in the town of Grand Lake, Colorado...a lot closer to Rocky Mountain, NP. Unfortunately rooms were ultra expensive in that quaint little town, so I "bit the bullet" and drove 35 miles away to stay here in Winter Park. I spent $100 plus tax for a Friday night. I was pleasantly surprised how big the room was. Besides 2 queen sized beds, accommodations included a lounge chair, plenty of closet space and an extended area for the bathroom. The spaciousness of the room was absolutely the best part of the motel! I checked in relatively late evening (8pm) and there were no issues. Parking was free and right in the back of the building. Valley Hi is located in the center of Winter Park with plenty of options for food all over town. There is free continental breakfast and coffee offered in the morning with your stay but the following day I had a long drive and grabbed food on the road. Although I was ideally looking for accommodations within the confines of the western part of Rocky Mountain National Park, Valley Hi Motel was more than a suffice place to put my head down and rest for the evening. If you're exploring in the Winter Park/Fraser area, I'd give the green light to come here.

Rooms were clean and well maintained, and had all of the basics you would need. Everything related to a ski day was nice here - had storage for skis and boots so that you didn't have to bring them to your room. In the morning they have a nice spread for breakfast including fruit and cereal, and also have some hot items including eggs, toast, sausage, and bacon. Definitely enough to get you fueled and ready for the day. Then there is a van they run that takes you right to the gondola leaving at 8:30, 9, 9:30. Taking the first van gets you there right for the start of day. And you don't have to worry about parking, walking, and paying at the resort. Rides back were at 3:15 and 4:15 which gave plenty of time at the mountain. I didn't get a chance to try the hot tub but it looked nice. There were some cozy spots in the lounge with fireplaces to sit and relax. And a ping pong table that a few kids were using to stay entertained. Parking here was convenient, and the location is good; very close to everything in Winter Park. Overall I was very impressed with this stay. I will definitely look here first when looking for a place to stay in Winter Park moving forward. I thought it was a fair value, and the amenities made for easy ski days where all I had to do was get dressed and show up to the van on time, and not worry about anything else.

Desperately needing to get away with my husband on a ski-cation to our favorite ski area, we looked into booking a room close to the slopes and found this place to be reasonable for a ski-in/ski-out and a sport studio through Orbitz. We read about the place needing updating, but we decided to give it a try anyway. Thursday afternoon arrival and we were allowed to check in early and found out there was covered garage parking! Nice. The whole place is keyless utilizing coded entryways and we were pleasantly surprised to find a clean and cozy room with a terrific kitchenette complete with granite counters and stocked with dishes & cookware. We had unit 1033 and the Murphy bed was amazingly comfortable for two tall people and the sofa had a pull-out sleeper too. The decorations were nice and very homey with an overall skiing/sledding theme. We liked it. The entire resort's workout area was neat and clean as were their showers/saunas. The pool area has a half in/half out heated swimming pool and two large hot tubs. Very nice area, especially after our day of skiing and wanting a hot tub to relax our muscles. Here's the not so stellar items; our bathroom sink did not drain well, the light over the Murphy bed was out and the windows don't open. But nothing horrible. Last but not least is the convenience of an on-site restaurant, La Collina. Over-priced & overcooked and not very good food from a small, limited menu is what we got. Ugh. Underwhelming. Next time we're going into town for much better selections. Overall, we'd like to return during ski season and maybe even summertime, but do NOT eat at the restaurant.
