I have to admit that I loved this place. I wasn't too sure before I stepped in because I thought it was just going to be a restaurant, and I had been here previously with work colleagues for a meal after visiting Luna Park. Well, it turns out that this is much more than just a restaurant, and as such I would consider it a pub. Like, they have a great beer selection, and the atmosphere just is amazing. The Vineyard restaurant in St. Kilda really is the centre of the Acland Street buzz. Even from down the street you can hear the music, laughter and voices coming from under the Bali style umbrellas looking out to the famous Luna Park. This is a modern Melbourne designed pub where it's still rustic and charming but also has a touch of class. The food is exactly what you want it to be such a steaks, pasta and other tasty menu items where its position and attractive decor make it always a popular venue. It very much suits the sunny "Sunday Sips" that is heavily enjoyed by people from Melbourne and it never seems to stop the 9 to 5 workers who stay and dance till late. It is very Australian and therefore does attract some "bogans" and some feisty internationals, which can ruin the mood there but most of the time it's friendly and pretty relaxed. I suppose it is definitively Australian so is a perfect description. I do find it a tiny bit expensive for just a few beers at the pub but that adds to the air of class it tries to uphold and meals are large so at least that pub culture isn't lost. read more

The Vineyard on Acland Street in St Kilda is a great place to "hang out" and watch the human traffic that usually resembles a procession to the cemetery which ironically is not far away. Hipsters, bogans, alternative types, bikies, goths and emos all seem to converge at this place and strangely enough, appear happy as they languish outside braving the four seasons in one day, smoking fags and being merry. I have found a trip to St Kilda is not complete unless you dine and sit outside at The Vineyard, which certainly will fill a void in your life if you enjoy watching people that are unconventional. When I was a tourist in Melbourne and used to call Circa my favourite restaurant, I would frequently use The Vineyard as a breakfast location as it is a short stroll from The Prince and is a recommended venue if you are in the area. Dining and drinking outside comes at a price. When I think of value for money, the term is completely lost on this place. I recently enjoyed a bottle of Melbourne Bitter and a pair of wagyu mini-hamburgers for around $28. The hamburgers satisfied my hunger but I was bemused by the mushroom gravy that was added. I have never had mushroom gravy (or a soup perhaps) added to a patty that purports to be wagyu and I am sure never will again, but honestly you really do not come here for the food or service. The human traffic both in and outside of this place will leave you amused for ages and you may even find it acceptable to get rained on since the drama that plays out is certainly more interesting then anything that happens in Summer Bay or on Ramsey Street. I find it interesting that in 2006, a man threatened to burn the restaurant down. After being ejected from The Vineyard, he went to a service station where he bought a fuel can, filled it with petrol and returned to the restaurant where he tried to ignite the fuel. Security apprehended the man and the place did not catch fire. This is just some of the sordid trivia that is attached to this place and I am confident if you sat outside long enough you would witness many interesting things. There seems to be an overarching theme involving restaurant arson in Melbourne. First it was The Swagman and later Jamie Oliver's Fifteen was torched. Fortunately The Vineyard survived to feed and amuse the masses and hopefully it will continue to for decades to come. Be prepared to start a tab or pay as you go though if you do sit outside as there seems to be a problem with people ordering, eating and then fleeing. The old juvenile concept of "dine and ditch" seems to have affected the bottom line of The Vineyard, so now you must excuse the inconvenience. I think it is a great policy though as you are forced to think about your spending which can quickly go out of control if you are not careful. This is a place you come to meet mates, have a laugh, have a few drinks, listen to music, have "a feed" and watch the world go by. If you want to take service or food seriously, I would encourage you to go elsewhere however what you get is on par with expectations but what I promise, you will have fun. read more

It's weird, because yuppie's a word which has kind of fallen out of the lexicon in recent years, and you don't really see them around that much. Certainly, there's people with money, and people with no taste, and people who think cash is the same thing as success, but they're generally not all those things at once. But the Vineyard? A fun place to head to thats 'in the area', and I went on a wednesday- Pretty packed. Theres a big outside smoking area- cool. Inside is pretty chilled out. Service isn't bad. Music is pretty good. The DJ was playing loads of old school hip hop and rap tracks, NOICE- also a massive flirt if I may add. Bathroom was kinda gross, but I wasn't too surprised. But the Males toilet was REEKING. It was NASTY, even with the door shut. They seriously need to do something about that. Shits nasty- Drinks aren't too expensive. And you can get a few dances in. I have only been to the Vineyard once- on a first date. As first dates go, it was awesome- beers, funny conversation, good crowd. I think that pretty much sums up the Vineyard. It always has a really attractive crowd (unsurprising, being St Kilda), but isn't overly pretentious. The outdoor area is cool and I imagine it would be packed in summer. Seedy is the perfect word to describe this venue. If you frequent Vineyard, you'll know what I mean. I have only ever been to Vineyard on a Sunday afternoon but its seems that's the perfect time to go. When the suns out with a Corona in hand this is place where you can really appreciate St Kilda in all its glory. You'll get your occasional regulars but aside from the clicks, the individuals that this beer garden/ night spot & restaurant attracts is really what makes the atmosphere so entertaining and worthwhile. The staff are friendly, the service is speedy and if you enjoy a good lazy afternoon of people watching, or alternatively a night in listing to local bands and DJ's then this is the place for you. It's not winning any awards for service excellence and is probably not the most hygienic of places especially to be serving food, but hey you get what you see & everyone knows it. read more

I think the jury is still out on this place for me. I loved loved loved the lazy sunday afternoon I spent here on the small but cute patio in the sun, people watching with a bottle of crisp sauvignon blanc. My friend and I shared a grilled calamari salad, and a calamari pasta that I would never normally choose, but Im so glad I did. The seafood was fresh, and the wine list was great. On the other hand, I came here for a night out with friends a few weeks later, and was there during the awkward change over from the dinner service to the evening bar crowd. It was loud, and while I didnt mind the band that was playing, i wouldnt have enjoyed it quite as much if I was trying to finish my dinner like a few patrons were. I've spotted footballers and local celebs here, and the clientele's dress code says "I spent three hours getting ready tonight, but Im trying to convince you I just threw something on." I'm not sure about Sunday afternoons here but on a sunny spring afternoon during the week it was a great place to chill and enjoy a few oysters and a glass of sauv blanc. The service was fine and everything was nice sitting outside but I couldn't escape the feeling of being stuck in limbo between wanting to be able to people watch a bit further up Acland Street or wanting to be closer to the beach. It's not a bad location, not bad service, not bad atmosphere but unfortunately it wasn't great either and I'm sure there's better nearby. More worthy of a weekend visit perhaps. read more

Come Sunday night the trusty Vineyard transforms into a serious meat market. Serious as in ladies watch out, the men here aren't shy. What would otherwise be a really nice chilled night in sunny St Kilda, can get sort of annoying due to unwanted advances, these guys certainly don't discriminate. Even so, the Vineyard is a total Melbourne classic and worth a visit for the nice casual afternoon drinking sort of vibe. I'm here from the States for six months, living in a serviced apartment on Southbank. But every Monday that I'm in town, I hop the 96 tram and head to the Vineyard for steak night. For the measly sum of 20 AUD, I feast on a perfectly seasoned and cooked Scotch Filet (rib eye), chips (fries) or steamed veggies if I'm feeling healthy, salad, and a glass of the house red. Plus, as a bonus, I get to watch the sunset over the Pacific (no up charge for the sunset). And the service is friendly and attentive. A no-brainer 5 star experience. read more
