Sugar Daddy's Cafe - Amazing selection of goodies, all gluten and or dairy free

Or many options for eating out. While that's the case we always look online. While in Edinburgh, we saw the website for Sugar Daddy and thought about stopping in if we happened by. While driving, we saw their smaller shop, quite by chance and so I double parked while my wife ran in to check things out. She was impressed by how diligently they worked to prevent any cross contamination of the different items... so she grabbed a sampling of products (4 or 5 of them actually) and she and the kids divided each of them in four to taste test them. Well everyone was BLOWN away by how tasty everything was! Our intent was to possibly come in the next day and grab more of what we liked... IF we liked anything. Our intent was to possibly come in the next day and grab more of what we liked... IF we liked anything. We didn't think they'd like EVERYTHING! That night after doing our sight seeing, we were SUPER bummed when Google told us that Sugar Daddy's was closed on Monday and Tuesday (Monday was our last day in town) and wouldn't be open again until Wednesday. We left for the Scottish Highlands, and while visiting Loch Ness she and the kids were lamenting about their missed opportunity to partake in more of Sugar Daddy's baked goods. They were so disappointed that I decided to alter our travel plans and to divert our route and drive an hour out of our way to hit Edinburgh SOLELY for the purpose of visiting Sugar Daddy's again. We swung through Edinburgh and visited the larger location... met the owner who explained the passion that he and his wife have for baking, and for "doing it right"! This passion translated into the variety of products they bake on site as well as those that they carry because they acknowledge that there are other artisans that can produce some superior products to their ability. They bring in loaves or bread and naan bread, and bake all the sweets. My wife and kids proceeded to by over $75 worth of sweets (donuts, cupcakes, brownies and cookie sandwiches) which they had tried before as well as loaves of bread, and multiple packs of naan bread based on the owner's endorsement of them. Unlike my wife and kids, I can eat anything... and do! And I have a sweet tooth like no other, and will frequent a variety of bakers wherever I go. Based on their enthusiasm, I decided to order a pumpkin cookie sandwich (pumpkin cookies with sweet frosting in the center). I didn't ask for one of each of the other things for myself, because frankly, I was a bit skeptical. Let me tell you that cookie sandwich compared to ANY product I've eaten at a gourmet patisserie or restaurant! Over the past three days, it's been my turn to lament as I have watched them eating those incredible sweets each day as we come back from sightseeing and going to shows in London. We can't recommend Sugar Daddy's enough... and have a standing offer to open up a franchise in VA! We LOVE Sugar Daddy's.. oh and by the way... the Roseneath location is open every day!

During my first week, I didn't have a UK cell phone plan so I could only look up things when I had internet or see things with my own eyes whilst walking! I was dying for some food a couple of days after arriving and looked up cafes with lunch that were near where I was staying -- that's how I discovered The Treehouse (little did I know I would end up passing it many times while walking!). Despite having an idea of what I would order, I read the menu upon arriving. My American myself was unsure of the names of some ingredients, since they differ from the names used in the US, but the cashier was kind enough to help me figure everything out! I ended up opting for a mozzarella panini with rocket (arugula) and tomato. It came with a little salad on the side and I ordered an Irn-Bru to drink. I took it to-go and really enjoyed everything that I got! I ended up coming back a couple of more times for food for myself and with friends since it was so conveniently located. Overall, I enjoyed my experiences at The Treehouse and it will hold a little place in my heart for being one of the first places I went to after arriving to study abroad :) definitely recommend!

In fact,…read moreif you didn't know that everything here was good and virtuous, that whatever your dietary requirements you are probably guaranteed to find it catered for, you wouldn't realise that that was the whole point. Sure, there's gluten free stuff, vegan stuff, dairy free stuff, juice cleanses, organic boosters, aaaaaaall that jazz. But it doesn't feel preachy or superior - it's just... really nice. Wooden tables, big front window in a leafy street in Marchmont just beside the Meadows, lots of light and space, and a mighty fine looking lemon tart I want to go back and try. Yep, it's a winner. Maybe they could do with a couple more comfy places to sit, perhaps, as one of my lasting memories is of "quite hard". However, my carrot, orange and celery juice was a super-refreshing start to a day that would later contain, from another establishment, two coffees in a row and the world's largest slice of red velvet cake, and yet I felt healthy all day because of the juice. Maybe that's the only danger here: the ability to fool yourself your diet is JUST FINE because you feel so good from just the smallest Meadowlarking of a morning.

I especially loved their juices (I got the greenest one on the menu), and smoothies. I also had their soup a few days in a row and it was equally delicious (tomato, a lentil soup, and a tomato and leak soup). Their chai tea is also worth a try. Super friendly staff, great space, and a bunch of options for vegan/vegetarians. A bit pricy, but the food is good!

My porridge was so hearty and yummy, I wanted to lick the bowl. My spouse's eggs benedict dish was also fantastic, and you can tell they use very fresh, high quality ingredients. The way they serve the meals in little stainless steel lunch boxes is adorable. My chai tea latte with oat milk was fantastically spicy and not too sweet. The server was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and always nearby, so it was easy to ask for our check when we were ready. And the inside of the restaurant had a warm, cozy feel. I would gladly eat every breakfast here the next time we're in Edinburgh!

When it came to ordering, I got an Iced Latte and a Buttery Bap. The menu is a bit difficult to decipher, as it was confusing how much or how little can be added to it and at what cost. The menu said I could only pick one filling, but when I asked I was informed that I could pick an unlimited amount. I'm glad I trusted my instinct and went with just two: Veggie Haggis and Tattie Scones. Both of these were truly delicious. However, there was an extra charge for the second filling. Prices for additions are listed at the bottom of the menu as if they were sides you could order separately. On the receipt, I also saw that I was charged 0.50 extra for ice. I don't understand why places charge extra to make an iced drink when overall you're actually getting less of the drink. Overall, everything tasted good and I'm glad I was able to try numerous Scottish classics.
