    Blueberry scone and a cappuccino

In Bruntsfield and Morningside you have your pick of cafes, and this is one of the best. It's tiny, so if you sit inside you'll be knee-to-knee with the next table. It's authentic, with French waitresses and fresh pastries every day. There are a couple of tables outside so if the weather is good then you can do some good people watching from outside. The scones here are glorious and coffee is decent. I'd recommend it if you're craving a wee trip to France.

We stopped in for some tea and coffee. This bakery/ cafe always looks so cute and is normally full of people. So today we felt lucky when we popped in for a treat and there was one table open! I got a almond torte with berries on it. They even put a cute little mini berry macaron . It was delicious! I got a soya latte which was really delicious! Well balanced and they used a good soya that didn't take over the coffee flavour. The tea's there is from Pekoe ! Which makes us love the place even more!!! Cant wait to go back for a quiche or baguette ! They looked really yummy.

I really wanted to give this place a 3 star because the people that worked there, every time I went in, were so rude and made me feel stupid for trying to pronounce the French menu but I loved the food and continued to come in and torture myself. I lived down the street from here when I briefly lived in Scotland and was told I needed to try it by the sweetest old man (I can only hope they were nicer to him). I am not a cheese fan but I decided to try the vegetarian baguette with hard Parm like cheese with roasted tomatoes, greens and a health dose of butter. The sandwich was great! I also have tried the pastries and not one ever disappointed me. The most notable one was a banana filled tart with a petite coffee macaroon sitting a top the whole lovely thing. I would put up with a lot for this food and on my next stay in Edinburgh I will be heading back here.

A proper authentic french boulangerie/patisserie. Everything is freshly made there on the day, from a great selection of breads, to beautiful looking pieces of patisserie.

Latte with soy. Very very good.

Best chocolate croissant I've ever had! I've had a lot too. This place is special. My wife is a pastry chef so don't tell her I said this!

Cuckoo's Bakery - Carrot cupcake and chamomile tea :)

I ordered a carrot cupcake with a chamomile tea. I sat at one of the tables and dug into my food as soon as it all arrived! The little cupcake was sweet, moist and very delicious. The chamomile tea was piping hot and exactly what I wanted. I sat at the side of the table that faces the street and got to just relax for a while whilst enjoying my food. From what I remember their menu mostly consists of the cupcakes and hot beverages! However, if that's exactly what you want then you'll be good to go. I intend on returning to give more of those delicious cupcakes a try :) Make sure not to arrive too late if you want to be able to pick from any of the flavors offered on a particular day! But I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in giving Cuckoo's Bakery a try.

The staff were lovely, putting up with my umm-ing and inane chatter. I may or may not have had a discussion with one of them about the aforementioned Doctor Who and our thoughts on the season opener. I settled on two different sticky confections (one toffee, one chocolate/caramel) and two identical lemon & raspberry meringue cakes - because I know that's a flavour Tim and I wouldn't reach a compromise on sharing. The sticky chocolatey ones were indeed sticky & chocolatey with a nice moist sponge, but those lemon & raspberry meringue cakes were possibly the nicest I've had. A proper light sponge, plenty of lemon flavour and the soft meringue topping is sweet without being sickly like buttercream can be. A true superstar of a cake from a lovely store. I'll definitely be popping back here - probably on foot rather than traveling by TARDIS though, mores the pity!

This is a hidden gem, in an excellent location between Lothian Road and the Meadows. Angelo (not…read moresure if Marcella is a surname, or somebody else's name) runs the place by himself, so you might be waiting a while for your order, depending on how busy it is, but you won't be disappointed. The food is authentic, delicious, and extremely good value! We visited for a meal before a concert on Lothian Road, and were one of only two couples at the place initially. (A much larger group arrived just as we finished, so I'm glad that timing worked out!) I wanted pasta, so ordered a simple spaghetti bolognese. Mary ordered a pizza with a variety of vegetables. We brought our own bottle of wine, after reading previous reviews that suggested free corkage. BYOB is absolutely fine, but the corkage is NOT free. It cost £2 for the bottle of wine. However, it's fine, because the rest of the meal was very good value. That said, I am a little confused about the corkage cost, because I did not see any alcohol for sale on the menu... The food, when it arrived, was excellent. The portions were generous, everything tasted great. We also had garlic bread as a starter and apple pie for dessert. The decor of the place is very simple, nothing fancy here. There are nice pictures from Italy (mostly Sicily), and some AC Milan decor. Angelo certainly isn't very talkative, but he's welcoming, and makes good food. Recommended.

The interior is decorated in plastic flowers, plastic fruit and blue tiling. However, I urge you to look past this as it all adds to the unique experience of Marcella and, if you are anything like me, you will learn to love the quirks of this establishment. Serving big plates of hot, tasty, filling food at budget prices is my go to place after a long, cold, grey Edinburgh day. A huge plate of pasta, garlic bread and a drink will set you back £5. If you want to splash out on a three course feast you won't be out of pocket by more than around £12. As well as great pizza and pasta you should also try one of the many sweet pies and pastries he erves. Rather than going to one of the many coffee shop chains around, head to Marcella and get yourself a pie and cappucino for the same price as a skinny latte in a certan multi national coffee chain that shall remain nameless!
