Outstanding for afternoon tea!…read more Butler service alone gets 4 stars and then if I could give the same and more for the actual food it would be like 10 out of 10 stars! I got the voucher via itison - afternoon tea for 2 with prosecco! For starters, we had a canapé and sandwiches, followed by lovely warm scones and adorable sweet treats. The prosecco was delicious too as was the Earl Grey Tea. Yeah I'll be back for more!

Room: Amazing. Service: Pretty good…read more Sound level: Pretty quiet. Price: SUPER REASONABLE. I decided to get away for the weekend and turned to Edinburgh for my adventuring. A few quick clicks on Booking.com made me realize something: I could just a star or two in a hotel rating by just being a mile outside of Old Town. SOLD! The room I booked was the Luxury Double (see: pictures) and the room was named the Ravelston. Second floor room and rear-facing for extra-quiet abilities (aside from the squeaky floor). The Howard has a Butler service and two of the three I was quite happy with; they were friendly, helpful and useful. The room service is incredibly reasonable: you want tea? They bring a fresh pot at no charge. Want to order from their menu? It costs as much as any cafe you could venture to. And, with any room booked it came with breakfast- so there's that. I feel like The Howard won 4-4.25 stars from me. I was happy, comfortable, relaxed and they accommodated quite well to my antisocial tendencies. So, what are they missing? I think the food is a bit under par to be considered 5-star as are their drinks. This place was quite lovely, I would definitely consider booking again.

We were initially concerned that electricity didn't work, but it turned out the room key card, left in a slot near the door, turns on the juice. Huh, never saw that before! We had a corner room with busy views of Grassmarket and Victoria street. I was afraid that street noise might be an issue overnight but it wasn't. The mattress and pillows were superior to that of most hotels. The room decorations were so much fun--Dandy comics all over the walls, and a magnificent magnetic map of Edinburgh on the wall! The room offered great storage with a shelf of wooden bins. The room's desk was so full of useful things that there wasn't much empty space to use it as a desk, but the window sills were wonderfully wide and worked as extra tables. There were several plugs around the room, from the desk to behind the bed, so it was no problem to keep our phones and tablets charged. We were here four nights. Our room was serviced daily without our belongings being disturbed. We appreciated the new Tunnocks left for us each day. Our one issue with the room was the shower; it's fancy standing shower with a very thin lip to hold back water. The hair catcher in our drain caused our shower to almost immediately start to flood onto the floor, but removing that catch solved the problem. Also: the shower knobs can be tricky, especially with soapy hands. I only felt I had the system mastered on our last night. The lobby is staffed 24 hours a day. We were greeted each time we went in and out, everyone pleasant and helpful. There's a fridge with beers, ciders, and other drinks for sale at the counter, as well as extra Tunnocks for 50p. We direct-booked our room and earned a free bottle of Prosecco that awaited us in our room. We were encouraged to trade it in for a cold bottle when and if we wanted one--we did just that! Then there is the hotel's location. It's right in central Edinburgh. We found it easy to walk everywhere from Waverly Station to the Royal Mile and into New Town. If you have accessibility issues, do note that the city is very hilly with uneven pavement and cobbles, especially in the vicinity of this hotel. We would happily stay here again.

There is a restaurant in the hotel but there are a LOT of restaurants within walking distance. We had asked for a room with two beds thinking they would be single beds. (Our last experience with hotels in Europe was not a great one. We had a tiny room and a tiny bed,) When we got our room it was bigger than we expected. It had two beds-one was a king and the other a queen. What a nice surprise! There is no air conditioning in most hotels in Europe. With the windows open and a fan I was quite comfortable because the temp was around 60° the three nights we were there. The hubby who likes it much colder said it was bearable. The staff was friendly. The hotel was clean. I don't remember if breakfast is included in the price. There is a buffet breakfast or you can order off the menu. The last morning I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs, and sourdough toast off the hot menu. It was delicious. Had to have smoked salmon before I left Scotland...wish I would have ordered it sooner. Yummy. Would have given it 4 stars but with the lack of ac and having to climb several sets of stairs before you get to the elevator I'm giving it 3 stars. In all fairness, on occasion I did use the hotel ramp to get into or leave the hotel but that entailed walking through the rain. It did, however, lead you directly to the elevator.

First of all, the location was perfect for us. It's right on Festival Square. Just look at the view that we had from our window on the 7th floor. The castle view is amazing! If you're a fan of concerts, then you'll also be happy that Usher Hall is right across the street from the hotel. The Edinburgh Farmers Market (every Saturday) is just behind the auditorium on Castle Terrace. There are many great restaurants all along Lothian, Fountainbridge, and everywhere in between as you walk up to Grassmarket. The great service started immediately with Ryan. He checked us in and made sure we had everything we needed. He was a great resource throughout our stay. The lobby was always neat as a pin. There's infused water available. The club is also accessed from this 1st floor area. We chose the Castle Suite which was very comfortable and spacious. The lighting and AC controls are modern and easy to figure out. There were plenty of electrical outlets (adaptable), and all were where we needed them to be. The bed was comfy, and house cleaning was great in getting the room ready in a timely matter on each day. I enjoyed the chocolate that was left for us each day at turn down. It was always a different flavor. The shower pressure and bath amenities were also great. We were also happy that our room included club access. It was great to be able to use their coffee machines throughout the day. I especially loved the fresh orange juice machine. Just insert a couple of whole oranges at the top and it produces a full glass of juice. Loved it! You'll also get access to the breakfast buffet at One Square on the 2nd floor. We did try it out on our last full day there. It had a larger variety of buffet items with table service. I especially liked the stuffed croissants. I think the one I had was filled with rhubarb. All the pastries were fresh daily. You can order an egg any way you like it, but you need to ask for it. It doesn't have the same open kitchen concept like the one in Kraków. I thought the breakfast buffet in Kraków was better. Although, I did get to try some unique Scottish items such as haggis and tattie scones. It was still well-done. I would most definitely stay here again. It made quite an impression on us for its comfortable amenities, good value, and location. Marriott Bonvoy members should be very happy here.

This hotel has the major advantage of a supreme location as it's only a 10 minute walk from a host of famous Edinburgh attractions and highlights. Just some of those very nearby attractions are the Edinburgh Castle, the National Museum of Scotland, the Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetery, the Royal Mile, and the Grassmarket Market commercial district. Besides that and more, there are a ton of pubs and other eateries of all sorts of cuisines close by. Then there are their normal hotel amenities. It's a spacious hotel housed in a historic building built in 1892. The room we have is cozy and comfortable and we even have a nice 2nd floor view of Edinburgh Castle. Their breakfast buffet is a delicious and large spread of classic British goodies. All of the staffers we have met are helpful and wonderful. The Hilton chain staffers are also always able to look up my Hilton Honors member number for points even though I never remember it. I can't give this Doubletree a bigger thumbs up. Thank you!

We stayed here five nights recently over the holidays. I booked the hotel through Tripadvisor Plus…read moreand chose the more expensive option to include breakfast. However, upon check-in I was told we didn't have breakfast included with our reservation. I don't know whose fault it is but made sure that there were no such discrepancies with subsequent reservations during our trip. At any rate, if the one dinner experience we had in the hotel is any indication of the breakfast quality, we didn't miss much. When we asked to see the menu, we were told we has to sit down before seeing it. Then, the waiter proceeded to point out many items that they were out of. After going over what was left to choose from, my daughter and I both asked for the tomato soup and the grilled cheese focaccia. The waiter replied that they were also out of the soup! So we asked what he would recommend to have with the focaccia and he suggested tater tots. The order arrived and the focaccia was like a rock - hard, dry, and flavorless. Then our waiter brought out chips/french fries (that unbeknownst to us came with the focaccia) along with the tater tots. We had to laugh - why would the waiter recommend tater tots if the focaccia came with chips? Nothing about our hotel dining experience was good. Our room was located at the far, quiet end of a hallway. The soap dispenser in the bathroom was empty and the one in the shower only lasted a couple days until that, too, was empty. The west end location of hotel was ok initially but after a few days we grew tired of the long walk to and from the city centre. I don't plan on staying at this hotel again.

Check in and out was easy. The bed wasn't very comfortable as I prefer a softer mattress. They never changed our sheets during our 8 day stay but did give us fresh towels. We ran out of toilet paper, tissues, hand soap and body wash so the housekeeping staff didn't really pay attention to much more than making the bed and giving new towels in our experience. The bathroom was very cute with the little sheep on the wall and the picture of Calton Hill over the bed. There were 4 elevators that were quite small and there is only 1 set of stairs that lead to the reception area, all other staircases have a fire alarm door at the bottom which we couldn't use. Every day was the same Scottish breakfast, cereal, breads/pastries, fruit. We ate there twice and then went to local coffee shops the rest of the trip instead. Overall not a bad stay, would probably pick a location closer to the castle next time.
