We paid $25 for the buffet breakfast which you could also order off the menu. The roughly sliced bread was SO GOOD! I put freshly sliced Brie on it and that was all I needed for a yummy breakfast! Later in the day we went to the 5th floor for a drink. I just got tequila on the rocks and it cost me over $16.00. My friend had a coupon for 15% off and the bartender said he couldn't honor it, even though it is advertised right on the coupon! Nice location in Grassmarket, close to all the sightseeing action, and only a few treacherous flights of stairs from the castle. You've got a lot of options launching your trip from Apex Grassmarket. Not to be confused with "the other" Apex hotel located about two buildings down, this is not that Apex. And your cabbie may need to know exactly which one you're visiting, because if you have to walk two buildings over it wouldn't be good. In town for a business meeting, I thought it'd be more about the surrounding area than the hotel, but the Apex delivered with helpful staff and accommodating meeting spaces. Breakfast in the restaurant daily had many menu choices along with the continental buffet, all served quickly and accompanied by lovely coffee and tea selections. This beats out the typical company meeting breakfast spread by a mile. You'll have a row of pubs scattered with Italian across the street and follow historic Victoria Street up the hill to many more eating picks within a kilometer (threw that measurement in for all you metric-types). There's even a crosswalk directly in front of the hotel headed toward "pub row" where cars actually yield when you're crossing. The bar and restaurant inside the hotel are nice environs if you decide not to venture out into the drizzle. Overall a good stay and I'd return. read more

This place is not a 4 star hotel. For 4 people it was $564 a night. Pretty insane quality for the price if you ask me. More of a $120-$150 value if that. No air conditioning. Fairly small room. Bathroom is small as well and the shower is extra slippery. You have to step in over a 2 and a half foot bathtub to get in and out. We visited in August, everyone was hot in the room, barely sleeping at night. The next morning we told them this and asked if we could get a second fan. The staff must get these complaints often because they started to ask us a series of questions, like if our radiator was on, if our windows were open etc. I did not expect to be interrogated to simply get an extra fan. Upon completing their lengthy questionnaire, they told us to double check our radiator was off and then call the help desk. Only then would they send a fan IF POSSIBLE. Of course our radiator was off. And the windows open. The windows barely open so little air gets in but a TON of noise flows through as we had a room facing the castle. After poor example of this hotel was after arriving from Glasgow, we attempted to check in 1 hour early. This was not possible and we were scolded for even asking, the staff was annoyed and stated that "usual check in time is 2:30". I never expect an early check in but I don't expect to be scolded for asking. Not to mention the other 4 hotels we've stayed at have let us check in a few hours early. We even arrived at one of our previous hotels at 9AM to simply drop off our bags but they offered us an early check in. The Apex hotel was willing to hold our luggage, although we had to ask and it was not readily offered. Overall they were not very friendly. There is usually 1 person working the front desk, 2 if you're lucky. Either way. The service was not speedy. The hallway was very hot. Just like our room as mentioned above. The lobby where all the staff are is somehow much cooler than any other part of the building. I'm glad they don't have to suffer like the customers. The housekeeping staff was much friendlier than any of the front staff. You may get enough relief from the heat sleeping by close to the window with your fan if you can sleep through the noise outside but I would never stay here again or recommend this place to anyone. As someone who vacations 3-5 times a year this is one of the worst experiences I've had. Our week in Scotland has been pleasant. Full of very friendly people, always happy to chat and refer you to local attractions or restaurants. It was a shame to end the trip here. Pros: Location, cleanish. Plump pillows. Friendly housekeeping staff. Cons: Hot (no air conditioning), noisy outside (when you have to open the windows due to the lack of air flow), unfriendly front desk staff, fairly stiff bed but not terrible. expensive $564 per night for 4 people, decor pillows on the bed were dirty and the rooms are older and a bit run down. read more

Great location overlooking the Grassmarket. Very convenient to restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, and ice cream parlors. The hop on, hop off busses stop just outside the entrance. We were glad to have a place to park our car during our stay, but relied on the busses to get around town. Rooms were on the small side, but beds were comfortable and the views of Edinburgh Castle were wonderful. We felt it was a great location. The staff were cheerful and helpful. Stayed three nights and the hotel has plus and minuses. On the plus side, the location is great, with many sites and pubs within walking distance. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is very good. Dinner at the restaurant was excellent. If you stay on the side of the hotel with a view of the castle, that view does not disappoint. On the minus side, the rooms do not have air conditioning, which would not normally be a problem in October. However, if you like to sleep a little cool it becomes a problem because if you open your windows there is a lot of noise outside. Grassmarket has a lot of pubs, and Edinburgh is a college town, so in the end, sleep is difficult. As a side note, the hotel is not very handicap friendly. read more

We had a wonderful stay at the Apex Grassmarket Hotel. The front desk staff were a huge highlight! They were some of the friendliest people I've ever met and gave tons of recommendations for things to do in Edinburgh. The location was amazing. It has beautiful castle views and was conveniently located near everything we wanted to check out. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. There is hotel parking, which was convenient. They also offered laundry services, which we took advantage of. Cons: The street noise at night is loud. Being next to plenty of restaurants and bars is nice, except it could get a little loud at night. We couldn't get the A/C to work, which usually is fine as I just open the window... but if I opened the window, the street noise was ever worse. Neither of these things were two difficult to deal with, but they're the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, a lovely experience! read more

Never, and I mean never plan an event here So COIVD, am I right? We had to, as many have had to, cancel our plans for our wedding (should have been July 2020). This space was to host our morning after breakfast. We chose it for it's location (all other events were to take place on the Mile or in New Town, and we wanted to give our guests a change of scenery. Mistake. The red flags should have started when they listed an insane amount for a buffet, but I figured we were essentially paying for a view. The second...and bigger red flag should have been that the staff kept rotating. I think I've worked with 3 or 4 people this year, as the last person was "no longer with Apex". Wonder why? OK anyway, we wanted to included a mimosa station..you would have thought I was asking for the moon and stars. We eventually settled on 6$ GBP per mimosa. 8 friggin USD a mimosa. But still, it was our wedding so YOLO. Then COVID. Every. EVERY other venue and vendor, including the frigging SIGNET on the ROYAL MILE issued a refund. Not Apex! "oh you can have a refund if thing's aren't better by next June". You're a wedding venue as per your literature, guys. You MUST know how weddings work. We can't just split decided that things are back on a few weeks moths out, and honestly I'm not asking or expecting folks to feel more comfortable traveling next year. Nice enough spot (if you like climbing up a million stairs or huge hill to get to the Mile every day, horrible management. Don't patronize these guys, you're sure to be hit with some hidden fee/pay too much for what you're getting. There are far better hotels and locations in Edinburgh. read more

Our room (king balcony facing castle) had very little space to place clothes. There was a tall wardrobe with one shelf. No small chest of drawers and one place for hanging clothes front to back. High Yield: Modern, clean, simple hotel that has wifi, restaurant, cafe, concierge, and good service located in the Grassmarket area good for families and travelers for very reasonable prices. Room Amenities The good- large comfortable beds with many many pillows for pillow lovers, a hot water kettle that comes with English breakfast tea, peppermint tea, cranberry tea, cream sugar and coffee. Good shower that comes with soap and towels. Good TV channels, adequate lighting and desk space for some work. The bad: Alright, so in the winter, it gets cold. Their heater is not exactly the most intuitive to figure out how to turn on and warm your room. It's the knob towards the floor of that white radiator looking thing near the windows. So your room never gets quite warm. The water in the shower doesn't get too warm either. I had a cold, so I would have preferred warmer water. There is also no hair dryer either, so those who use that be aware. Hotel service: Very good concierge. Very helpful and very courteous. Helped me with my National Express vs. Northern Express snafu. Hotel amenities: Has breakfast for 11 pounds a person. Breakfast is a cold breakfast of hams/salamis, yogurts, and cereals. Not really worth the bang for buck in my opinion. I recommend going next door to Graze on Grassmarket for 5$ you get a whole breakfast box or go across the street to Scooby Doo cafe for a 7$ breakfast platter. Centrally locates, just down the street from Victoria Street, around the corner from the Royal Mile, plenty of pubs nearby, 15-20 from Dean Village. Selecting a hotel on line in a city you've never visited before is always a bit dicey. Frustrated by the hundreds of choices in Edinburgh, I finally went with Apex International for the location on the Grassmarket. When we walked up to the hotel I was relieved to find a modern hotel in an excellent location. The room was large enough and comfortable, though jammed with large furniture. The window overlooked the Grassmarket with Edinburgh Castle up above it. The smallish bathroom was modern and the hot water plentiful. My son who mainly travels the hostel route thought the Apex was luxurious and would give the Apex four stars. I thought it was a very comfortable hotel in an excellent location for seeing the sights of Edinburra. This is a busy hotel with conferences taking place and busloads of people on tour checking in and out at the same time. Among the amenities (we never used) are an in-door pool, a nice looking bar, and a restaurant. Small complaints: no desk lamp, bad light over the sink for shaving, and the two computers in the 2nd floor lobby are excruciatingly slow. Price. I booked on line 6 weeks in advance and paid approximately $120/night -- about what I've paid for comparable hotels in downtown Philadelphia, Ottawa, and Denver and less than SF, Chicago and New York. North American tourists, remember that hotel prices in the UK, unlike at home, include all the taxes. read more

We are glad we decided to stay at Apex International. We stayed for two nights and since this was our first trip to Edinburgh, we didn't really know what to expect. We picked Apex International because it was in Old Town (where we wanted to stay) and the price was very reasonable. We arrived via an over night sleeper train from London, so we actually arrived at the hotel really early, like 8 AM early. We didn't expect to get a room until after 3 PM, their check in time, and had just wanted to leave our luggage at the hotel so we can tour around town. But the receptionist desk clerks were super friendly and looked for a room for us. In fact, they took several extra minutes because they said some parts of the hotel is under renovation and they wanted to make sure we are not disturbed. So though we weren't expecting to get a room that early, we certainly were very appreciative that we did. It really helped to get to relax in a room, refresh a little, before going back out to tour the city. Our short stay at Apex International was a very pleasant one. They hotel clerk asked if we needed any directions or help with any attraction booking. Every time I asked them a question, ranging from where to get stamps to leaving our luggage after we checked out, I've had really pleasant and friendly staff members. We did feel a bit hot in the room (and this was toward the end of November) so we left the window slightly opened and cooled the room a bit because we couldn't find the control to turn the heater off. It's probably more of a personal preference because we usually like our room very cold. Since we only were staying there for two nights, we didn't bother with getting maintenance to come. Other than that, our room was very spacious and the bed comfortable and we'd definitely consider staying here again if we are to travel to Edinburgh in the future. read more

Our last stop in Scotland was Edinburgh, and we were wowed by the city. The hotel was just ok. One plus to our stay was the hotel's great location, right in the center of the Grassmarket in Old Town. It's a bit of a bar scene around the area, but we didn't have any issues with noise like some of the other reviewers. We found this to be a convenient place to get to and from, within easy walking distance to the Royal Mile, the Castle, and other sights. We also enjoyed the cleanliness of the room. It had what we needed, the furnishings were well-kempt, and the beds were comfortable. However, we were underwhelmed by the service. The husband and I arrived at the hotel after deciding to walk from the train station (not so wise when you're pulling suitcases over cobblestone in the damp dark), to discover that there were stairs at the entrance. What? No one bothered to come down and help us as we struggled up the steps to the front desk area, and then there was yet another set of stairs leading to the elevator lobby. We asked but got no answer about a ramp or lift, and so wondered what other travelers experienced or even those who are disabled and cannot navigate steps. This seemed like a serious design flaw, and the lack of service discolored our stay. We also found the hotel food options too expensive, so opted for the neighboring cafes instead. read more

The customer service at this hotel is extremely poor. When checking in, we were given a room that was unsatisfactory, as it was going to be extremely noisy. I asked the front desk how many other rooms were not yet checked in and were told that most had not yet checked in. I then proceeded to request a room change. The hotel refused as it appeared to be to much trouble. As a result, my wife and I had 2 nights of the absolute worst sleep we have ever had in any hotel in the world. The Apex Grassmarket was our home in Scotland for the first two nights. Unfortunately, I did forget to get any pictures of the property. Our room was located on the quieter side of the hotel, but that meant we didn't have a great view either. Our room looked out over the parking lot instead of Edinburgh Castle. But, since we were spending most of our time exploring said castle, it wasn't a big deal to us. The room was fairly large and fit both of our large suitcases easily. The bed was pretty hard compared to what we are used to, but after we spent 12 days in the United Kingdom, we learned that all of the beds in the hotels are fairly hard. Since this was the first hotel in our stay, the bathroom was also a bit of a shock. We had a combined tub/shower room and the step up into it was pretty high. So much so that I slipped initially getting into it because of course, the glass walls are only half curtain walls and water will get on the floor. The room and bathroom were very clean and the staff was great with bringing our bags to the room. Our room included breakfast daily too. They have a selection of juice, breads, and fruits with an added hot breakfast. Jason had their traditional breakfast while I chose the eggs benedict. The eggs benedict was amazing and I wish I had remembered to take photos! I'm not much of a coffee drinker either but their cappuccino's were so good, I had one every morning. You cannot beat the location of this hotel. Situated in the middle of Grassmarket, you have a castle view no matter where you look and there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Since we were staying on Sunday and Monday, we didn't have any issues with noise from the bars late at night, but I could see where this would be an issue with weekend stays. read more

I mentioned that we were tourists and thought Edinburgh was really beautiful, and were given a room on a high floor with a GORGEOUS view of Edinburgh Castle. Floor to ceiling windows, if I recall correctly. The staff was really helpful and friendly, and the hotel was clean and quiet, despite being on a busy street. It's really close to everything, so you won't have to spend much on cabs, and feels like it's in a safe area. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat :) read more

The Apex doesn't disappoint in terms of location. It's right slap bang in the heart of Edinburgh on Grassmarket- perfect for Edinburgh festival or sightseeing action. The hotel and its rooms are spacious and modern. - we opted for a double room with two king size beds which were amazingly comfortable. You either have a choice of rooms (odd numbered ones) with stunning views overlooking the Castle, but equally astounding sounds of the weekend on Grassmarket. The windows really didn't seem to shut properly and did let in a lot of noise. You can ask reception for ear plugs. The even number rooms are much quieter but overlook the less beautiful carpark. Ahh decisions. We moved rooms from an even to an odd number - and actually other parts of the room improved including the number of power points. There were faulty lamps in the rooms and inconsistent house keeping. Sometimes we would get products (lovely Elemis), and sometimes we wouldn't. Sometimes the towels will be on the bed, playing hide and seek instead of in the bathroom. But that's nit picking and overall we had a comfortable stay. Loved the jelly beans and hot chocolate provided complimentary in the room. read more

Overall a very nice hotel. The lobby was very nice and large with a decent bar, did not eat there although reviews for the food were good and the smell coming from the restaurant was amazing. Staff was pleasant and efficient with check-in and they had parking, which at 14 pounds a day seemed like a bargain coming from Seattle. The rooms were good sized and the beds were comfortable and clean, along with the bathroom. As mentioned in other reviews, no A/C which seemed odd especially when you are paying top dollar for a room in the center Edinburgh. Although none of the hotels I stayed in in the UK had any A/C. So like Seattle, maybe they don't offer it because it does not get that warm, although at 400am when the bars let out, it would be nice to have to drown the noise out. Bring ear plugs, we were there during the Fringe and it was loud constantly. However we did have a fantastic view of the castle across the street, although I would have picked a back room in order to get better sleep. As mentioned in my title, great location and within one block of the royal mile and a few miles from everything else. I did not use the car once while I was in Edinburgh. read more

The Apex looks great from the outside - big, modern and trendy. The inside is similar too...aside from the big comments. I found the rooms quite small, and was disappointed in the bathroom. The rooms are nice enough - I was reminded that we wern't in the hotel for the rooms, we were there to visit the city so I suppose it's all that we needed. It's in a great location and every now and then they have really cheap deals. If it's your first time in Edinburgh then this would be the ideal hotel to stay in, for all the tourist-y things, but there are nicer hotels in the city for your second visit. read more

After reading many reviews of this hotel, I was disappointed by the service of the staff and the accommodations. It reminded me of the UK version of a Marriott, so nothing spectacular. The first room we checked into was on the top floor and had a nice view east of the city. However, the wind was howling and howling as soon as we set foot in the door and something in the roof/ceiling was banging. I hate to do it but I knew I would never sleep through that so we requested to move to a lower floor. The manager came up in about 10-15 minutes and brought us to our room on the 2nd floor which was unfortunately much smaller. This was not ideal as we were on our honeymoon and would have liked a good size room; however, we did complain about the first so it was okay. The next morning we woke up sweating as the heat had been left on (I guess by housekeeping) and it was very hot. My husband went to turn the heat down, looked down at the knob and it was completely broken off of the heater. We were on our way out so we stopped at the front desk and told them so that they could maintenance while we were out. When we returned, no luck, still broken. We called the front desk and requested maintenance again, again no luck. This continued for the next 2 days, again sweaty and hot all night long. Yuck! Maintenance finally showed up the night before we were to leave and changed the valve/ knob in about 10 minutes. But all that time we had waited really left a bad memory for us. If the maintenance department was understaffed, I wish they would have moved us to a different room, or to their other location a few doors down. I had sent some laundry out for service and there must have been some miscommunication because it didn't arrive back before I was schedule to depart. Tried every possible combo. Had to use bathroom in pure darkness. Mentioned something to front desk. Said they would let mgmt know. No one ever showed or called. Disappointed. I travel to Edinburgh atl east once a year for pleasure, i have stayed in New Town during my last visits, this time i had to find a room for 3 persons, Apex International offer family room for a reasonable price. We arrived very late on a Monday, the reception desk was very friendly and professional, we got our at first floor (didn't like it because i emailed a couple of days earlier and asked for a room on the highest floor). The room had a small window towards the inner garden, the window wasn't able to open, the room had at least 25 degrees and soggy, it was impossible to sleep there. I went to the reception and complained about the room, -Sorry but we are out of rooms, i explained that is was impossible to sleep there cause of bad air and heat. I asked for another room in there other hotels. In one minute the fixed us a room at Apex Waterloo place(i have stayed there before and its great hotel) for a night, and then move back to another room at International. The reception order taxi and payed the round trip for us and also gave us a breakfast for free. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT TREATMENT OF CUSTOMER, very professionally This kind of treatment make me want to stay at APEX again of course. The hotel is headed in Grass market, perfect location in Edinburgh, the room was very nice and good space. In this hotel you get alot of value for the money. Breakfast is not that god, i can recommend to have nice breakfast 5 minutes of walk at Peters Yard instead Apex have 4 hotels in Edinburgh and i have stayed in two of them i think International and city are good, hut Waterloo place is the most trendy/updated. We primarily chose the Apex International for its location and it had a pool! Perfect walking distance to most of the attractions we had time for on our 2 day trip. The room and bathroom were a decent size with a comfortable bed, however, looks like we were shunted into a room for disabled clients - bathroom had hand-railings, sink lower than usual, which was no real issue, except the shower tended to flood the bathroom as it was on a slight slope meaning u had to wear shoes in the bathroom after each shower use. Unless you like wet socks every morning. Part of the reason for staying here was the pool. Touristy stuff through the day, relax a bit in the pool in the early evening. However, the pool was filthy, floating bits of scum, hair, bits of plastic. I advised the front desk of this and they took down my contact details with the promise a manger would be notified. Well either the message was not passed on, general low standards, or they just don't care as nothing happened and we had no contact back. Upon checking out the reception girl brought up the wrong room and charged us for 3 nights parking instead of 2, without even checking first. Never heard of a buy 3, get 2 deal before. I recently visited the Apex International hotel as part of a wedding and I wasn't impressed. The decor of the hotel is fine but it's ridiculously hot. It seriously felt like I was in the Indonesia or the Caribbean, it was that hot. I spoke to one of the hotel porters and they said it was like that all the time, not good! Another thing was the main wedding organiser was extremely rude. I personally heard the organiser tell the wedding photographer's assistant Get the photographer (she used his name but it's not appropriate to write that here). No please or anything like that. Potentially the photographer and/or his assistant could have been future guests at the hotel but based on this treatment I doubt it. Wedding was quite nice though, the room where the couple got married has absolutely fantastic views of Grassmarket and Edinburgh Castle. read more
