Firstly I will start with the bad. The rooms have NO air conditioning! There is a tiny window that can be opened but provides no ventilation. A fan is provided, however does nothing while circulating hot air around the room. It does not even properly reach the window to draw air in. The sunlight comes directly in and sunburns you while you're in bed, because the curtains cannot be closed due to the heat. Like seriously, our innards were baking like haggis in this room. Rest assured there is most certainly air conditioning on the 1st floor so the employees can be comfortable. The bed is uncomfortable with springs felt all around, but who can sleep anyway when sweating all night? There is lots of noise outside from work around the hotel. Window is open so it all flows right in. The good part is the location is nice. Lots of amenities around. However, I cannot recommend this hotel and we will be checking out early to find another place.

As a Titanium member of Marriott Bonvoy, I spend a lot of nights each year in Marriott branded properties. This one does not live up to the Marriott name. First off - there is no air conditioning inside this hotel. The hallways are a virtual sweathouse. Only the heat is adjustable in the rooms. There is no AC in the rooms. They do provide 2 small worthless oscillating fans. The cords on the fans are not long enough to get them in front of the small windows that only open a few inches. If you use the oven or range in the kitchenette, you'll doom yourself to an evening of night sweats. Our suite room was in desperate need of a remodel. The hardwood floors were coming apart everywhere. There were 1/4-3/8" gaps between many of the planks and they clattered when walked on. Many of the walls were banged up and in need of touch up painting. The baseboards were peeling and the ceramic tiles were ameaturishly repaired with caulking. The rotating lobby front door was broken. The ice machine on the 4th floor was broken. A sign tells you to go to the 2nd floor or bar for ice. Guess what? The ice machine on the 2nd floor is broken as well. Summed up in two words: DEFERRED MAINTENANCE. Quiet and off the beaten path, the facility is in desperate need of modernization.

Everything about this hotel is spot-on. The nice walk from the hotel to see lots of shops and restaurants is one mile from the castle. The staff is friendly and helpful. We had a corner room which was large. There is no air conditioning, but in September with the window wide open and the fan on, we were fine. The breakfast area and food is lovely. There is free laundry! Two washers and dryers with soap is available. Toilets are there. Fruit is on the counter in the evening. The counter has a few drinks and snacks to purchase. Outside around the corners, both directions, are coffee shops and a small grocery store. The U of E is next door, and The Meadows, a large park with a playground and a historic 36-short hole golf course is down the way. Great location if you like to walk. I suggest hiking boots. The streets and many walks are cobblestone.

There is a small kitchen and lounge area The foyer has a bar, breakfast room and small shop. There is a computer area. The staff are so helpful and friendly. With a complimentary cookie on arrival.

We were initially concerned that electricity didn't work, but it turned out the room key card, left in a slot near the door, turns on the juice. Huh, never saw that before! We had a corner room with busy views of Grassmarket and Victoria street. I was afraid that street noise might be an issue overnight but it wasn't. The mattress and pillows were superior to that of most hotels. The room decorations were so much fun--Dandy comics all over the walls, and a magnificent magnetic map of Edinburgh on the wall! The room offered great storage with a shelf of wooden bins. The room's desk was so full of useful things that there wasn't much empty space to use it as a desk, but the window sills were wonderfully wide and worked as extra tables. There were several plugs around the room, from the desk to behind the bed, so it was no problem to keep our phones and tablets charged. We were here four nights. Our room was serviced daily without our belongings being disturbed. We appreciated the new Tunnocks left for us each day. Our one issue with the room was the shower; it's fancy standing shower with a very thin lip to hold back water. The hair catcher in our drain caused our shower to almost immediately start to flood onto the floor, but removing that catch solved the problem. Also: the shower knobs can be tricky, especially with soapy hands. I only felt I had the system mastered on our last night. The lobby is staffed 24 hours a day. We were greeted each time we went in and out, everyone pleasant and helpful. There's a fridge with beers, ciders, and other drinks for sale at the counter, as well as extra Tunnocks for 50p. We direct-booked our room and earned a free bottle of Prosecco that awaited us in our room. We were encouraged to trade it in for a cold bottle when and if we wanted one--we did just that! Then there is the hotel's location. It's right in central Edinburgh. We found it easy to walk everywhere from Waverly Station to the Royal Mile and into New Town. If you have accessibility issues, do note that the city is very hilly with uneven pavement and cobbles, especially in the vicinity of this hotel. We would happily stay here again.

There is a restaurant in the hotel but there are a LOT of restaurants within walking distance. We had asked for a room with two beds thinking they would be single beds. (Our last experience with hotels in Europe was not a great one. We had a tiny room and a tiny bed,) When we got our room it was bigger than we expected. It had two beds-one was a king and the other a queen. What a nice surprise! There is no air conditioning in most hotels in Europe. With the windows open and a fan I was quite comfortable because the temp was around 60° the three nights we were there. The hubby who likes it much colder said it was bearable. The staff was friendly. The hotel was clean. I don't remember if breakfast is included in the price. There is a buffet breakfast or you can order off the menu. The last morning I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs, and sourdough toast off the hot menu. It was delicious. Had to have smoked salmon before I left Scotland...wish I would have ordered it sooner. Yummy. Would have given it 4 stars but with the lack of ac and having to climb several sets of stairs before you get to the elevator I'm giving it 3 stars. In all fairness, on occasion I did use the hotel ramp to get into or leave the hotel but that entailed walking through the rain. It did, however, lead you directly to the elevator.

I ordered the Scotsman's board and a small tuna Niçoise salad. The food was fresh, delicious and seasoned well. I recommend this restaurant even suggesting the Scotsman board to the couple beside me who were considering it.

So some amount of "luxury" is as expected. We did not get the room requested and that was a disappointment. We did not inquire after seeing the room to be fair. The lack of any amenities in the bathroom at the price point was astounding. I have stayed in holiday inn express establishment that have some level of amenities. The Scotsman had none aside from the body wash, shampoo and conditioner in large bottles. That's fine I guess but not for the premium price point. The room had no heat at all. Even after contacting the front desk the excuse given was "the building is quite old and takes a few minutes to heat up. But the fan would not even turn on. At some point it did turn on but only blew cool/cold air. We were given a small space heater to help warm the cold room. Our room was on the ground floor at the corner and well. The bathroom window looks right onto the sidewalk outside and has clear glass. Yup. Everyone can look right in. Of course they have shades that you can pull down to block the view in and out of the bath. Problem solved unless you want natural light while you get ready for the day. Maybe frosted glass would help. Also as far as amenities, towels were rough and scratchy. Only two hangers in the closet is crazy and only to hang shirts. So if you want to hang dress pants? Well, bring some from home. The restaurant however beautiful, was lack luster in food quality and service. The front desk people working were helpful in calling a cab for us when it was time to leave and as helpful as they could be given the situation that had to deal with. I never expected them to fix the heat. But maybe the managers should help them out by addressing the situations? I was really looking forward to staying in this hotel after looking at all the photos on line and the location is AMAZING. But in hindsight I would choose another place to stay. It just didn't match the price we paid. I would not stay here and would think twice before suggesting it to others.

First of all, the location was perfect for us. It's right on Festival Square. Just look at the view that we had from our window on the 7th floor. The castle view is amazing! If you're a fan of concerts, then you'll also be happy that Usher Hall is right across the street from the hotel. The Edinburgh Farmers Market (every Saturday) is just behind the auditorium on Castle Terrace. There are many great restaurants all along Lothian, Fountainbridge, and everywhere in between as you walk up to Grassmarket. The great service started immediately with Ryan. He checked us in and made sure we had everything we needed. He was a great resource throughout our stay. The lobby was always neat as a pin. There's infused water available. The club is also accessed from this 1st floor area. We chose the Castle Suite which was very comfortable and spacious. The lighting and AC controls are modern and easy to figure out. There were plenty of electrical outlets (adaptable), and all were where we needed them to be. The bed was comfy, and house cleaning was great in getting the room ready in a timely matter on each day. I enjoyed the chocolate that was left for us each day at turn down. It was always a different flavor. The shower pressure and bath amenities were also great. We were also happy that our room included club access. It was great to be able to use their coffee machines throughout the day. I especially loved the fresh orange juice machine. Just insert a couple of whole oranges at the top and it produces a full glass of juice. Loved it! You'll also get access to the breakfast buffet at One Square on the 2nd floor. We did try it out on our last full day there. It had a larger variety of buffet items with table service. I especially liked the stuffed croissants. I think the one I had was filled with rhubarb. All the pastries were fresh daily. You can order an egg any way you like it, but you need to ask for it. It doesn't have the same open kitchen concept like the one in Kraków. I thought the breakfast buffet in Kraków was better. Although, I did get to try some unique Scottish items such as haggis and tattie scones. It was still well-done. I would most definitely stay here again. It made quite an impression on us for its comfortable amenities, good value, and location. Marriott Bonvoy members should be very happy here.
