Always one of my favorite places to get donuts. It always seems to be a place where people can meet up and catch up on old times. But today my experience was nothing of that. I came in and purchased 2 cups of coffee set up a table and two chairs. I sat and visited with a long time friend and also family member. We were sitting in our childhood stomping grounds. Time most definitely got away from us and about two hours into our visit the woman working behind the counter decided to clean one side of the dining area. We were the only two people inside sitting and visiting. She began to move the coffee prep bar towards us to clean behind it. I asked her if she needed us to move so she can clean the side and she just copped an attitude immediately with me acting like I was really putting her out of her way. Stopped what she was doing and went in the back. I don't know what her problem was we were paying customers at that point and from the neighborhood. It's a place I come too often, and I always leave a generous tip and have also been a part of the GoFundMe for the various reasons. I really felt like I didn't matter. Maybe they have the wrong person working there in the afternoon. At about 12 o'clock she came to me and said she was gonna close the doors in 10 minutes. Not really sure what that meant except that we only had 10 more minutes to visit and needed to leave. They don't close till 5 o'clock so why would she close the doors just afternoon? read more

This year Santa ask for an apple fritter and milk instead of cookies and milk so we went to our favorite donut spot. The donuts are baked daily. They are moist and the apple fritter has a nice crunch. My son loves the chocolate twist or anything with sprinkles. It's located a few blocks away from Tahoe park. Well, I just cannot say enough good stuff about Village Express and their donuts. The staff is always super nice, even threw in a few donut holes for me. There is always a huge selection. You want it they've got it! The maple is to die for! I ordered 2 maple bars and 1 bear claw today and let me tell you they did not disappoint. There was an old school car club meet up this morning. I love the community vibe and groups that meet up here every time I come there's a group of men enjoying their morning coffee and donuts. This is a little hidden gem mainly only the locals of Tahoe Village know, but luckily one of my best friends is from the area and showed me this place! The donuts here are HUGE. They are not your regular standard donut. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a sweet fluffy light as air donut, but other times I'm in the mood for a giant hunk of sweet doughy bread - which is what these donuts are! The gentleman who owns and runs this shop is very kind. He makes you feel welcomed and loved like you're a customer who has been coming there for years. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND the ham and cheese! Expect don't be surprised if they sellout early in the morning. They go quick and are THAT good. The only reason I'm giving minus one star is this donut shop is CASH ONLY. So you better make sure you're not coming in with only a card. They do offer an atm but of course it has a fee. Also something I notice with the donut holes is they have a bit of a over fried old grease taste to them. I'm weird and enjoy that taste - it let's me know I'm really indulging in something greasy. But for some I know this will be a bit of a turn off. Either way if you're in the area and get a chance check this place out! The staff was kind my plain cake peanut donut was tasty (I needed a tester lol) my husband enjoyed his apple-bear claw, then I started in on my apple fritter. First bite was delish! I went for the center where all the appley goodness lived only to find it under cooked and doughy...that threaded look. I dropped by in the early morning to pick up donuts for my workplace. There were so many to choose from and the owner of the store was very patient as I picked out every single one. I got around 10 donuts which came out to be $9, and he included a few extra donut holes :) The donuts have just the right amount of sweetness, and my coworkers loved them!! This is a small, no frills bakery located in an older complex in the Tahoe Park area. Village Express has been a staple here a long time, and the inside shows it's age. Fortunately, the freshly made and moderately-priced donuts make this a worthwhile stop before work, or any time for that matter. Looks can be deceiving, as this shop demonstrates. I was in need for a last-minute box of goodies for work. I pulled up Village Express on the Yelp app and it was close by and not completely out of the way. Also it was open. Walking in I felt a little awkward under the scrutiny of the old timers sitting at the cafe tables with their coffees and baked goods. After a quick stare-down, the woman behind the counter beckoned me forward and quickly helped me choose a huge pink box filled with goodies. This bakery has all the usual standards such as the maple/chocolate bar, super rich old fashioned's with icing, sprinkles galore and of course a huge apple fritter. They offer other baked goods, and I purchased a cinnamon bun and flaky turnover for the box. The transaction was quick and I was out the door in 2 minutes. The consensus on the donuts: Most tasted fresh and delicious, and the sprinkles got several thumbs up. The apple fritter was a little greasy, but I noticed it was quickly eaten anyway. I was told the turnover was light and buttery...I should have been fast enough to snag a bite! I have returned on two other occasions and received quick service each time. The people behind the counter are friendly and quick! While this is a older bakery in a somewhat rundown shopping area, I can see why it has been a neighborhood favorite for years. read more

Their apple fritters rival the High Hill Ranch apple fritters from Apple Hill (yes, they're that good). Coming here today was not a happy experience. Because I remembered enjoying their apple turnover I had decided to treat myself to one for my combination breakfast/lunch today while I was out running several errands. As an asthmatic with sever allergies I greatly appreciate California's smoking ban for businesses that I believe is supposed to extend for 20 feet outside entrances. However, when I arrived here someone was sitting at a table and puffing away right beside the open door. I ordered 2 turnovers so I could have one today and another tomorrow. After completing my next errand, i opened the bag and found I'd been given apple fritters, not apple turnovers. It wasn't what I wanted, but I thought it was partly my fault because obviously I hadn't understood his accent and what he had repeated back to me when I ordered. He had tried. I figured I'd just go with it ... that was until I took my first bite. It tasted scorched, and the grease was practically dripping from it; clearly it had spent way too much time in the oil. It was not edible, and I don't feel I can afford to just throw away money on something that is of no use. I returned and told him how they were bad, and asked to get something else in exchange. This time I got the apple turnovers that I wanted, and the one I ate was good; but between the smoke I had to walk through, the botched order, and how horrible the fritters were, I don't think this is a place I will be coming to again. read more

It's not trendy, hip or even clean. However, it is a good, honest, no frills doughnut shop. I live in Tahoe Park and I'm very glad this place is here. The apple fritters are great, and always seem warm. Same nice old man is tending to the counter most days, who is usually very friendly. Only complaints are: 1.) the regulars are great, love them. Wish they didn't smoke right in front of the door every day. 2.) there are sometimes riffraff around the parking lot, due to the adjacent liquor stores. One of the few survivors in the Tallac shopping center, and most definitely one of the sweetest! Fresh homemade donuts, good selection and reasonable prices - the only real drawback is cash only (an ATM is provided within), but I suppose in times of penny pinching, some modern conveniences have to be set aside. Unless you're buying out the whole shop, who needs more than a $20 anyway? Stick with the classics here - their standard chocolate bar is sweet, light and airy, and cake donuts with sprinkles are yummy and filling, and will take you right back to childhood if you pair it with a glass of milk over that standard cup o' coffee. There is a cast of characters always sitting at the tables outside this shop, it seems to be a good low-key meeting spot for people who aren't interested in the neighborhood bar scene but still want to be social. My mom lives across the street and I know she has made good friends and found help for household 'manly' tasks from buddies she has made in the donut shop crew. It's a throwback to a friendlier time! So we've tried this place twice now since moving into the neighborhood. We've heard such good things and really wanted to like it but no, just no. The donuts are dense and don't seem fresh, and the jelly donut has some artificial red dye goo that just tastes awful.The first time my spouse went to pick up donuts she was the only person in the shop with one person ordering at the counter. During that time someone else came into the store that clearly must be a regular, because the clerk began a conversation with him and insisted on taking his order next even when that person said my spouse was next. This is the place you go once you've gotten too old to be hangin' out at the Tallac Lounge and still wanna socialize and bullshit the day away. Your shift changes from 8:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. - noonish. The coffee will keep you pissin' just as much as the beer but you're cleansing your liver and kidneys instead of murdering them. Now, as far as the donuts go, this is my favorite place to get a maple bar in the world. It's a dense bar which is just the way I like it.
