We took our two Dachshunds to Villa Precious Paws approximately 2 - 4 times per year (7-16 nights per visit) for 3 years. During the last 14 night stay one of our Doxies got an abscess in his cheek and was rushed to the emergency clinic around midnight. Elke notified us around 2am. Evidently she noticed the swelling in the morning, but didn't decide it was an issue until 11pm... The cost of the late night visit was approx. $600. Obviously we weren't pleased with the cost, but the health of our boys is utmost (that is why we chose Villa Precious Paws in the first place). The emergency vet was unable to determine the cause of the abscess, but thought it was most likely from chewing (they ruled out the teeth as a cause and chose not to x-ray). The little guy was sent home with a drain tube in the abscess, antibiotics and a head cone. Elke disagreed with the diagnosis and wanted her regular vet to x-ray; her reasoning was that he was "not a chewer". Actually, our whole family knows that he is a very anxious chewer if left alone (we've had him for 4 years and have a leather chair to prove it...). Anyway, Elke was sure it was a tooth abscess, even though the emergency vet ruled it out. I told her to go ahead with the x-rays at her regular vet ONLY if the vet was CERTAIN they were warranted. End of story - the x-rays were not warranted... I really disliked this whole situation and came away feeling like Elke was being extremely defensive. We paid all the additional fees without argument, but I just can't bring myself to take my Doxies back -- not knowing what type of care they are REALLY getting. All in all, this was a very odd situation. read more
