For context the stylist I've been to for years is based in Baltimore and with how traffic can get I can't justify spending 40% of my saturday going to Baltimore to get my hair done. So I began the search looking for a new hairstyle salon. Tried Alexandria, Springfield, even Fairfax. But none have provided what I need and certainly not justifiable of the price it commanded. So I tried HairSocial because I found it on Google and I liked I can book online. My hair appointment consists of the following: Wash, Blow Dry, and an undercut. Sometimes I'll get it flat-ironed depending on the occasion. So I booked 4 days in advance and when I arrived for my appointment I had to wait 20 mins after my actual time (for context it was a Sunday afternoon and no one else was in the shop except for one customer). When I was seated I was only given a haircut and nothing else despite asking for a hair wash and a blowout. Considering I had to put a downpayment online to book the appointment I naturally felt bamboozled. They offered to do what I originally asked but they said I had to wait an hour. I didn't have time as I had a family dinner I had to attend so I decided to go home and wash my own hair. Before I left, the front desk offered to refund me on my card and then said no and could only offer me a credit. The credit was tied to my account yet the credit isn't available when you book online you can only access the credit if you call to set up an appointment. Extremely disappointed but the stylist did a great job with my haircut. I'm just disappointed that I didn't get what I paid for at a reasonable time. Thankfully the management of the loc in Tysons Corner set things right and as a result despite this location being closer to me I go out of my way to visit the HairSocial in Tyson's Corner (that review will be coming shortly).

Every salon will try to sell you their stuff so I have stopped buying all together as I felt like the hair stylists just pushed whatever product the salon has a contract with. Here, I was never pushed to get anything I did not need. There were several times where I was given advice against getting something unnecessary. Yet the Surface line of products is amazing. Completely natural which has never worked for me before. Here I have purchased a variety of products for myself and now for gifts and I have not been disappointed with anything I ever bought with one exception. When the styling cream I purchased did not work out the way I wanted, I received a full refund even though I used it. 4. The owners and team! Thank you Irving and Lauren! The decor is weird and there was a door that said "Tattoo" right in the sitting area? Daniel rushed around without bothering to acknowledge my presense. His assistant/other guy in the salon was so nice and outgoing, but otherwise it was a total cold shoulder and I felt burdensome to him to be there. I will give Daniel credit that he is knowledgable in his craft and he gave feedback based on what I was discussing with him. I only ever do simple cuts, nothing fancy. My haircut, done by Anderson (a level 3 stylist), is objectively good. The skill was there. But it's definitely shorter than I wanted it. Went in for a lob, came out with an asymmetrical bob...Honestly I was panicking while he was drying it because it was starting to look like Lord Farquaad from Shrek. I asked if he could style it like in the reference pictures I showed (simple waves, to reduce Farquaad-ness). He tried to do it with the brush/dryer, which obviously wasn't working, and didn't want to use a flatiron. So I just suffered through scalding heat on my scalp and hair pulling. I got told I don't have curly hair. I got told I don't have frizzy hair. I, in fact, have both of those. Some other minor things: 1. When I got home I had some hair that was noticeably longer than the rest, like it never got cut. So...I had to do it. Just a few strands, but normally stylists check for that when your hair is dry. 2. I almost never use heat on my hair, so I asked for recs and mentioned a specific brand doesn't work for me. He immediately said he loves that brand. I said yeah...but it doesn't work for me. Anything else? "Any salon brand." Cool. Not helpful. 3. Asked for something at the end to tame the pieces that were sticking out (again, I have frizzy hair). He looked...confused? Smoothing as a last step has been standard at every other place I've been to. There is nothing in the whole salon like that? Also, my introvert-self just wants to go somewhere where I don't have to be engaged in conversation the whole time. Anyway. Won't go back, my hunt continues.

Came for a cut and color with Emma…read more I have very dark (black) hair that's thick and voluminous. With the warmer weather I want to cut it thinner, but every time I go somewhere they try to do high layers which just makes my shoulder length hair look like a lob. Emma listened to what I want and was able to trim my hair (1 inch) and thin it out as needed so that I can have light and airy. My hair finally feels like it can move! Emma also very patiently put SO many foils in my hair for a nice natural balayage. I had told her I want something low maintenance that won't have me screaming for a touch up in 6-8 weeks (did I mention my hair also grows very fast?) and preferably something lighter but not too light (I also just know my hair won't lift that quickly). 4 hours later I have what I wanted! Rodi came by and said hello. Everyone at the salon was very friendly and pleasant. Would definitely return (maybe to go lighter? Maybe for toning? Maybe for another great haircut). Recommend!

And I tipped $20 for $280. (3) that "the area is expensive" (4) that apparently i need an ongoing longterm relationship to have a dye job that doesn't leave me feeling ripped off (5) that "we always have free dialog" so that "you can alawys get alterations to your service complimentary of course" -- this is the biggest sticking point.
