Videotheque sells some new and used DVDs and Blu-Rays, but their main purpose of being is as a video rental store and it's like no other video store I've been too. Their videos are organized by how a cinema fan's mind works. By category, by country, by director. John Woo movies in the Hong Kong director's section. Hou Hsiao-Hsien in Taiwan. There's classic porn from the 70s, 80s and 90s. There are Criterion discs. There are John Huston movies, Godard movies, Wim Wenders and David Lynch. Dario Argento horror movies. Sci-fi. Pre Sci-fi. Post Sci-fi. Brazilian. African. Silent films... I could go on and on. If you are looking for an obscure out of print classic film that's not on streaming, there's an 80% chance that you can find it here to rent. There is street parking nearby. The problem? I live in OC and this place is in Mount Washington/Montecito Heights. So if I move down there, I'll be renting some unheard of movies, that's for sure! read more

This is a movie rental place. I know hard to find now days. They do sell some stuff. It is really fun to look through all the movies they have. Most everything is dvd, but they have blu-ray and 4k too. I liked talking to the staff about their stock. They had some stuff that I'm been looking for rent. They said the they move all the shelves around so they can have a movie night where they bring out a projector. I recommend this place if you got the time. The selections are wide and full of cultural significance, great value for the DVDs they have on sale, service was ok. I think a new employee was being trained so there wasn't much interaction. If you are a movie lover, you have to at least check the Viodetheque once! They have an array of movies, various genres, nicely organized. I could spend hours in here since the selection is very good, they have more obscure titles on DVD, VHS, cool posters. Decent sized store. I don't live in South Pasadena area, otherwise I would come here often and rent from there. But if you love movies and live in the area, give this place a shot! It's more to fun to chat about movies with like minded peeps, you might discover a hidden gem or at least enjoy a fun conversation! read more

First off I haven't rented a video in about 20 years and was able to rent 28 days later which wasn't available on streaming and hard to buy. Amazing selection of films here, it is one of the most unique and underrated shops. The staff were amazing. So helpful and Uber friendly. The cost of rental is fair for the amount of days and the convenience of just shipping the dvd/Blu-ray back without having to drive to the location. read more

Very fun store to look through. Especially for a nostalgia trip. They have wide selection of DVDs to look through. The international section really surprised me. There are many films that are not easily available or accessible that they have here. Many of which I have never heard before. The horror section is very well stocked as well with many titles, separated by famous directors, decades, etc. They even have vintage cartoons, TV series, avant garde and cult films, and even some VHS and other cool knick knacks for sale. The staff had Cowboy Bebop playing when we came in so that is already a sign of culture. read more

Whoa it was like stepping into a time warp. They carry dvd's, blurays, and even vhs tapes! This place has quite the eclectic selection of movies, documentaries basically anything that was filmed. I enjoyed going here they have a large international and art house film selection, stuff that isn't found on most streaming services. But they also have some of the latest films and stuff so if you for whatever reason want to watch those you can. The prices are reasonable $5 for 3 day rental, but if you buy multipacks they go down in price! The staff was super friendly as well. A great place for the neighborhood! read more

Videotheque is a place you may want to check out if you want to rent out dvd/blu rays. I was excited to go to this place as I had been wanting to go and check it out for a while. Upon, my arrival- I asked the staff member for some assistance to get a sense of the space. As I could not tell what was for purchase and what was for rental. The staff member was very rude even though, I had explained to him it was my first time there. When my girlfriend also asked the same staff member a question about a movie that she was curious about purchasing the staff member took her to the section pulled out the movie and said it was only for rental and slammed it back in the section. (BEYOND RUDE!) Needless to say we were turned off by the demeanor and did not end up renting/buying anything. The good: decent mid size collection for rentals. Unique titles New titles available for purchase The bad: High prices on certain items small collection when it comes to buying The staff is very unfriendly and unapproachable No proper labels as to what is for purchase and what is for rent Would not recommend coming if you are a collector with the intention of buying specific titles. This store is what a video store should be. The place to go for the movie connoseur with discriminating tastes. I feel smarter just going in and looking around. They have everything that Blockbuster doesn't and even carry some of the better new releases. They don't carry junky movies, so practically anything you'll pick out is a winner. My tastes are ecclectic which makes other stores just frustrating for me. Loved that I went in and came out with Private Benjamin, Downton Abbey, and Pippi Longstocking. I know I know... I love that they sort their movies by major actor, director, genre, style, time period. It makes browsing the shelves so much easier. Classics. Artsy. Political. Social. International. Yet, they also have new releases, children's movies and TV on DVD (my newest addiction), and a good selection of quality movies for sale. They seem to have everything I'm looking for and often didn't realize. The people who work there really know their stuff. Ask them for an obscure actor or movie and they'll pull it off the shelf in a minute or recommend others you may like that are similar. They also have shirts, bags, rare music and dvds. Hopefully, they'll have the dark chocolate peanut butter cups available for sale at the checkout when you go. Classical conditioning by good movies and chocolate - mmm. I cannot tell you how many times I've driven past Videotheque and have always wanted to walk in but didn't feel like looking for street parking at night (that's the laziness in me after a long day). But, let me tell you... after getting off the Metro, I decided to try to walk home and Videotheque was waddyaknow... on my way home! :D FINALLY! I stepped foot inside what is only known to be the coolest discovery I've made in my neighborhood of South Pasadena. Honestly, I was so determined to get home ASAP b/c I was hungry & tired... but it was the playing of *My Neighbor Totoro* that caught my attention and lured me inside. I have very fond childhood memories of Totoro (first introduced to me by my Grandpa in Japanese on VHS). I felt like I was walking into a bookstore, but the shelves were filled with DVDs instead of books! It was such an incredible feeling of amazement to my eyes. The films are categorized by Country of Origin which is then categorized by Directors (Foreign films), some are categorized by Actors or Genre. The more recent releases can be found on the far left wall upon walking inside. There are also vinyls that can be purchased in the back far right corner by the register counter. The foreign films I rented are due 1 week after the initial rental date. They can be dropped off in the drop box provided at the front of the store or brought to the interior drop box -- must be done no later than 11pm! We found it for sale but it was $70+ and didn't feel like spending that much to watch it once and then let it collect dust! This video store is so cool that I could dump my cable. In fact, I'm disappointed that I have so many movies on my DVR that I don't go here more often. Every time I go in, I'm reminded that I could spend years renting movies nightly and watching them. I remember when I used to go in to movie rental stores and we couldn't find/agree upon a movie, but in here we agree upon dozens and it's all a matter of figuring out which one we want first. I like that films are sometimes arranged by director or star and not always just by genre. It's fun to immediately be able to see all a director has done and go through a director's works one by one or to rent a bunch of your favorite star's movies. I also love weird films and they have good collections of B horror, cult classics, and other odd films. The only thing I dislike is when I find a film I'm dying to see and it's only in Blu-ray :( Maybe I'm a little too old-school. read more

Videotheque is the beating indie heart of South Pasadena. As corporate chain stores of every ilk rob this small town of its identity, Videotheque gives it personality. I say this knowing that South Pas is letting this gem go. Apparently, the landlord wants too much for the rent. One of the last few video stores, and a damn good one. They have just a wonderful collection. This is the closest you can find to a Cinefile or Vidiots on the East Side. If I had one complaint, it would be that their rental prices are pretty steep at 3 plus dollars a rental even with prebuys. I wish it was more in the 2 dollar range, but I guess they have to do what they have to do in order to stay afloat nowadays with so few people renting DVDs and Blu Rays. They also have posters, OOP collections, and a small selection of rare used records and new vinyl. Support this store. read more

Place has great selection but it's the staff that can be super hit or miss. I guess one should assume there would be some level of pretentiousness entering a common day DVD rental spot but sheesh are some of the staff so rude. Still worth checking out. Videotheque is a really cool music/video store in quiet South Pasadena. They're a remnant of a dying era but they manage to stay in business because they offer a wide selection of music, DVDs and great customer service to boot. They have rows and rows of films organized by genre. I can get lost browsing here. The prices to rent films is also very reasonable and you have about a week to return rentals. They have a return slot to the right side of the front door if you're dropping off after hours. read more

I want to give more stars. Hmmmm well. So. Hmmm. Oh I know, if you need to experience and anthropology moment, a dying breed of a personality from book stores, comic book stores, record stores, and independant video stores. The snobby, all knowing, slightly bitter, sometimes completely bitter, know it all, persnickety, look down their nose at you, ignore you, too cool, ironic, dark humor, or humorless store clerk, is still alive and strong here. I think hmmm where else can you work? Oh bartending or a coffee shop, likely a vintage store too. I'll put it this way, I got a membership, rented one movie, was ignored, talked down to and made to feel like I was in the way. That was over a year ago and I haven't gone back. I have called on three different occasions to see if they had certain titles in stock and was faced with all of those fantastic characteristics listed above. So I'll return when I have the proper armor to deflect the various modes of interaction. That's only when my sense of nostalgia for the Indy video store can over power my fears of the clerks. read more

Love this place. Great selection and super easy to navigate. Listed by directors and categories, it was such a blast from the past! Only complaint was the customer service. I asked for help finding a certain title and a young man with long black hair was "obligated" to help me. Once he took me to the movie I wanted to rent, which he apparently disapproved of, it took almost 5 minutes for him to check me out! I guess he was too busy talking to his friend about the Matt Reeves Planet of the Apes movies? Other than that guy, I loved the place and highly recommend! read more

I first passed by Videotheque a few years back while hanging out in South Pas, but I never went inside since I didn't live in the area. Now that I live in Alhambra, I finally decided to check out the store and was completely awestruck. The vast selection of films and their respective genres blew my mind. I really appreciate how the store has curated specific movies based on actor/actress, director, and country of origin. The sheer variety of films available is far superior to any video rental store or streaming service that I have encountered. Coming to Videotheque has brought back a lot of memories for me and I feel like my love for film has been revitalized. I've already watched more movies in the last couple of weeks than I did for the entirety of last year. I love all of the film memorabilia laying about the store. All of the clerks I have met have been very friendly and helpful. I really dig the rental time of one week for old releases and three days for new releases because it gives me enough time to watch all of my movies without having to return them the very next day. Great selection. I found a rare vinyl LP that I wanted to buy. Even though, according to Yelp, they are supposed to close at 11PM, we were told at 10 that they were closing and we needed to leave. So, we got the hell out of there. I did not purchase that LP, and I'll never be back. read more

First time review, long time customer. I have been a member and fan of Videotheque since they first opened around 03. They used to be across the street in a smaller location slightly closer to the Goldline. Next door to Monarca Bakery. I am glad they have been doing well and have maintained a loyal following. Now they have been in this nicer location for a few years now. It has gotten better as they have a House Cat and sometimes a Resident Dog! Like others have declared, they have a wonderful selection of domestic, foreign, animated, cult, exploitation, gay/lesbian, documentaries etc. They also have music, shirts, and posters for sale. I always recommend Videotheque to cinephiles and casual viewers. It is great having an eclectic brick and mortar video shop you can still walk into and browse. It is the Vidiots of the East! I just wish some of their foreign sections would get updated even if it meant the DVDs were copies. They used to have more DVD-Rs of great quality. That was how I saw Battle Royale II in 04. I didn't care! I was just happy to not have to wait. I will continue to support Videotheque. Most of the staff is friendly approachable. One chap used to have a neat waxed mustache but apparently moved on. I always enjoy the help of the fella who reminds me of Marc Maron. Yes some appear to be hipsters but have not been rude to me. Tip: sign up for the newsletter to get 10% off bulk rental packages which makes renting a lot more affordable/competitive (for the naysayers that think the cost per rental is exorbitant) or rent one and get another rental free. When I moved here, I really missed three Austin, TX staples: I Luv Video, Vulcan Video (RIP), and the good old Uni's Fine Arts Library mega haven. Both I Luv Video and Vulcan Video combined would be about the size of this store, I reckon. I've been to a very similar indie store in Santa Monica and it's okay but this place is a lot more convenient, well stocked and well organized. A true gem. Netflix is too expensive for me to keep up with in terms of trade off. I don't actually have that much patience to "binge" (which leaves me feeling like a drained zombie) let alone binge on movies or a series I'm maybe admittedly settling for because it's on the stream. Videotheque's membership packages really allow you to enjoy film viewing at your pace at a reasonable price of under $4 for a week-long rental (it's around $4 without a package). I also have had a Fandor account I stopped renewing after a year when it lost its limited and alternating Criterion Collection themed selection, I venture to guess when Criterion co-launched its own Filmstruck with whom I now have an account with. But, again, I don't consume movies as much and probably end up spending the same or more per month as I would here (assuming I go an average of twice a month). There's a lot of films this place has that isn't on Fandor, Filmstruck or Netflix. The people that work here are also genuinely nice, chill and knowledgeable folks. I temporarily misplaced "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and asked the clerk about options for replacing it since it's out of print - I felt guilty already and appreciated how they were so nice about it. Before then I've never bought anything off of Amazon so the owner kindly ensured maintaining the integrity and quality of the replacement I would be buying since others will subsequently be having to watch it by recommending whatever condition was best for me to purchase on Amazon that would be acceptable (not like I would know). Then, I found the DVD later (like I said, temporarily misplaced) and we swapped out without any hassle. In my experience with replacing a DVD for them and being privy to the measures they took to ensure the DVD was legit and high quality, the review about alleged pirated material makes no sense and strikes me as oddly and purposively fabricated. However, and it was only one time, I rented a movie and the clerk accidentally gave me some movie I'd never rent. It is the kind of mix up that can happen at most rental places and anything involving a check out like the grocery store. Make sure you check for yourself on your way out. It was handled with an immediate hassle free swap when I went to return the second film I rented. Last but not least, this place has a gentlemanly shop cat, Jules. I love small businesses with resident shop cats. Online streaming definitely does not have Jules. read more
