I went to Vida requesting new whitening trays. Dr. Detrik talked me into having the much more expensive teeth whitening treatment done, saying its actually so good for the teeth, really wonderful chemistry and better than any other kind of whitening treatment and also, Id get the whitening trays along with the treatment. I say sure, go for it. Dial forward, Im in the chair getting this treatment done and the hygenist notes that my teeth are "already paper white." She seems a bit worried about the whitening going too far. We go through the treatment and afterward Im handed a bag that does not have whitening trays in it. I ask Dr. Detrik where they are. He says "Oh, you really dont need them, your teeth are already white. I had them include a light that you can use instead but honestly you dont really need to." I say nope, I want trays, isnt that what you did the whole high-tech super accurate mapping of my mouth for? Isnt that what I actually came here for, and what I actually paid for? Not this light that I could have bought on Amazon for $20?" So they ORDER my trays. Mind you, I had just paid them to put goop on my teeth to open the surface of my teeth chemically to allow the HOME tray treatment to work better. You are supposed to have the treatment then follow up with whitening trays the following two weeks because THAT is when the whitening happens. At home, with the trays. The trays he didnt order at the time I paid for this treatment because he was very clear in his mind that I do not actually NEED the 3k treatment he talked me into doing. And the trays? They arrived via mail about a month later. Far too late for the at home whitening to benefit from that treatment I just went through, spent so much money on. So, you tell me? What is the top priority for this dentist, this office? Is the top priority caring for your teeth in a clinically appropriate, and necessary way? Or is it $omething el$e? read more

Vida Dental aspires to be a place to go if you have anxiety or trepidation about dentistry. They have an almost exhaustive initial patient questionnaire to learn more about patients and what they want and need, followed by a conversation with your dentist about these things during the initial visit. I shared that I have intense dentistry anxiety, and that what helps me is to take care of everything that needs to happen for me while I am in their chair. So, if I need a deep cleaning do the deep cleaning now, please don't make me come back for a second visit. This all seemed to be understood and agreed upon. And I shared that I was on a great routine for cleanings, and that my out-of-state dentist was happy with where things are being maintained. I wanted to keep that healthy routine of cleanings going, but without needing to drive to Colorado. Santa Fe is 4 hours of driving for me and would be better. So far, so good. Seemed like Dr Detrik understood. He mentioned laser treatment for cleaning but was cagey about what it would cost, so I said I'd think about that perhaps but that for the first visit please take care of cleaning my teeth. The hygienist cleaned my teeth but told me she was NOT cleaning the areas that most needed cleaning because "its better to leave that for the laser." I'm in the chair with things in my mouth, she is working on my teeth and I'm also highly anxious. I was not sure what to do or say, I had not committed to the laser treatment at that time, I did not even know what it would cost; I wanted my teeth cleaned. But that did not happen, the areas of my mouth that most needed this cleaning were left untouched. Afterward we were told that the laser treatment is not covered by insurance and cost in the ~10k range, in a manner reminiscent of how things are managed at a car dealership. To say I was very anxious, disappointed and disillusioned is an understatement. I purchased teeth whitening, largely because they are one of the few places that offer this type of whitening and I resolved to give this dentist office another chance in spite of not liking what I was seeing. The teeth whitening was fine. Today I went back in for a teeth cleaning that had to be one month later than ideal because of scheduling issues, they lost a hygienist. Montana told me I have high blood pressure, and I told her my blood pressure was high due to the well-known anxiety about dental work. I had a doctors office visit a week ago and my blood pressure is fine, normal. She still argued with me that I should see my doctor about my (non-existent) high blood pressure. After doing an initial exam, she said I need a deep cleaning and spoke to me about the expensive laser treatment again and that she would not be doing a regular cleaning for me at all. Here I am in the chair again after hours of driving, unable to have the cleaning as planned and I believe it is because the hygienist skipped areas of my mouth entirely during the last "cleaning" because they are quite literally banking on getting people to pay for their fancy laser treatment. Their prices are higher than everyone else in town by about 20%. Office manager is extremely rude. She harassed me even after I found a new dentist by continuing to bill the monthly Kleer fee, sometimes 4 times in one day. read more

I can't say enough about this dental practice. I moved to Santa Fe 3 years ago and am so grateful to have finally found a great dentist. For three years I was subjected to a dentist who 'took my insurance.' During that time I had 3 emergencies-- broken tooth and broken crown (that they made), and excruciating pain. Three times I was told that they did not treat emergencies. I knew that the dentist that I was assigned was not competent and they refused to let me change to another dentist in the practice (there are at least 5 others). I was referred to Vida by a friend when I had a terrible toothache and was once again told that 'my dentist' could not see me for three weeks. When I called Vida, they asked me when can you get here? I was seen within the hour. Dr. Giron was kind and caring--but most importantly, he had me out of pain within a few minutes. What a difference! This is a real dental office! They have the latest equipment and they are very knowledgeable and current on new techniques. They treat you like a valued human being. Every one is warm, friendly, and caring. As a former dental hygienist, I can tell you that you pay more than twice for poor dental care. If you have only been to one of those corporate dental offices with revolving dentists and assembly line care, you might be lucky and get adequate care, but I doubt it.
