In the lobby on the main floor we're vending machines. I was checked out by another equally pleasant employee at the desk in the morning. The housekeeping lady had already checked to see if we were out so they could start cleaning our room, and we were out of the hotel by 9:30 AM. She handed me a receipt showing there was a $70 credit and we left. Turns out they're 24 hour cancellation does not apply to you initially showing up, it also applies to telling them you're going to leave, at least according to the person who tried to help me today when I called to find out why the $70 hadn't been credited back to my credit card. So if you are staying for a baseball tournament, you should not stay at this hotel because they will keep your money even if you leave a day early. I'm sure they also rented the room out later so they got double the revenue on that room for the day. Also, we initially had room 126 but had to move to room 124 because the smell of cigarette smoke was so overpowering in our room from the person smoking in the room above. On the second day, our bathroom smelled like marijuana because of the people smoking weed above us. Don't waste your money staying here. Pick another hotel that isn't going to keep your money for a day that you didn't use. It's also a $100 deposit I'm guessing because they have so many smoking issues. I stayed at nicer hotels with a smaller deposit. That should've been our first clue.

Instead of greeting people or paying attention to guests, they were too busy laughing and tearing people down. It was petty, unprofessional, and made the entire hotel feel cheap. Front desk staff set the tone for the whole experience, and this set a very bad one. I would not stay here again because of this behavior. If management cares at all about guest experience, they need to deal with this immediately.

The shower control valve didn't work. The back Door which was an emergency exit would get stuck and not open. The suite was advertised with a pool. I was told "oh that's not available. We just got licensed for that" after more reviews found, I can surmise that's been the case for 2years now. The best part of this whole thing, after check out they attempted to charge me even more. On the first stay, my confirmed room was not available at check-in, at 9 pm in the evening. Upon check-out, the MOD, (manager-on-duty), said no adjustment would be made for the non-functioning tv. The second stay, again confirmed room not available at check-in, at 2 pm in the afternoon. Was able to check-in at 3:45 pm. TV didn't work! Was fixed by the evening desk clerk. In the morning MOD declined to discuss the issue, recommended I call back, and talk to the general manager. The third stay, for the record I didn't have a choice about staying it was company booked and paid. BED BUGS! Management denied any issues and claimed I planted them. I filed a complaint with the Linn County (Iowa) Health Department and provided them with a sample of the bugs. I never received any response from hotel management. Contacted Choice Hotels International, the franchisor, and they did provide me a fair and reasonable compensation in points for my shabby treatment at the property. Pool is in bad shape. It looks like the hot tub was recently filled in with concrete. The pool itself is in need of a full clean out and repainting. The bedroom suite is very large and accommodating. The sleeper sofa had a large tear in the upholstery. We didn't use the main room, so no biggy. There is a lingering smoky odor in the room, which is strange since the hotel is non-smoking. The kitchen is iffy. Fridge has not been wiped out, random utensils - flatware provided but no plates (?). From a distance, the kitchen looks nice, but it has its fair share of flaws. The bathroom is most concerning. Hairs found on the bathtub and rust in the tub basin. Rust showing on the shower wall too (not sure how that happens). The towel bar in the bathroom is also rusty. There are two a/c units in the suite. The one in the living room works fine, but the one in the bedroom has some weird replacement control that I couldn't figure out. I ended up turning it off since it was very loud and impossible to turn down the fan speed. Lastly, the TV channel lineup is maddening to figure out. Random channel numbers that are practically impossible to tune into. None of the channels are HD - something that should be a standard expectation for a large-chain hotel to provide. Breakfast area seems serviceable (we'll find out about that in the morning). Just as we're settling in for the night, what do we hear???? You got it - freight train.
