The hotel staff was friendly from check in to check out. The room was very spacious and the layout was really great! There is an entry way with a large closet on one side and large bathroom on the other. The bed faced the windows and there was a large desk behind the bed with plenty of space to spread out. King sized bed was comfortable. Large TV with smart streaming options and a mini bar area with coffee pot, microwave and mini-fridge. Water pressure was good, temperature nice and hot, towels fluffy and large enough to encircle a normal sized human. AC worked really well in the room and it was hot out so that was nice to come back to. I ordered coffee and breakfast my first morning which took longer than expected, but the food was tasty. Coffee left a lot to be desired.

It's so rude to the next dog owner. And to the establishment. I would raise the fee too. But then I would clean up after irresponsible dog owners so the next people don't have to risk stepping in it. Other than that it was the perfect stay. They really make you feel at home.

At 3pm, still no room.......we had four rooms, but the party had pretty much the entire hotel. At 4pm, still no room....but someone walked in the door at 4:05 and they received a room. At 4:15 again, I went to the front desk. Up to this point "Dave" was helping us. He was busy and an older taller lady with long dark & gray hair "helped" us. This is where it got ugly. The lady was the rudest hotel person I have ever met. I asked for answers to why and when. All she did was give me a nasty smirk and I actually told her to remove that smirk. I asked for the Manager, she said the Manager could not do anything about it. I asked again, within 15 minutes we had the Manager. We explain the guarantee we received when booking the Wedding and that we had a pre-wedding party to get to an an hour. She said they were having staffing issues and our four rooms have not been released yet. I informed her, I went to our rooms and the doors were open. The rooms were clean. She explained they have been inspected as complete yet. I explained to her that people have walked in and received rooms. I explained to her she needs to swap out rooms for people standing in the lobby vs. people who have not arrived. 15 minutes later we had three rooms. While standing with the manager as she clicked on her computer, I heard another guest ask the tall long haired lady, "What is going on?, Why aren't rooms ready" The same rude lady behind the counter which smirked at me...........Told the other guest, "It's none of your business." Wow. I thought her husband was going to jump over the counter at Ms. Tall & Rude. The next day I caught a room cleaner in the hallway and said they did not have to do a complete clean on our room. Just give us towels and coffee. We received NOTHING. Hotel Millwright way over promised and way under delivered. I'm shocked at the lady behind the counter. Dave (behind the counter) was nice.. The Manager did not have her arms around the operation. She made people stand in the lobby for an hour and a half while rooms were available, just not reassigned. Regarding the reception.......the facility was nice. However, certain food items ran out before all guests were fed. The bar was understaffed and the lines were long. Hope this review finds many people and saves you from the Millwright.

The hotel is in one of the main Amana colonies where there's the most to do. There's plenty of outdoor space including some gardens and a patio. We found the staff friendly and especially helpful as we didn't plan on stopping in Amana; we came across it and the hotel staff let us in on where to eat, shop, and explore. Room was clean, mini fridge was very helpful, air conditioning worked well. Normal check in is 3pm - I asked if we could get in a little earlier to get ready for the wedding there. Not only was the answer yes, but I got a phone call when the rooms were ready. In all my years booking hotel rooms, can't say I've ever had that happen before, and it was much appreciated so we were confident we'd have plenty of time to get ready. Great service!

Upon arrival the staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. After two flights coming from Knoxville, I was tired and ready to hit my bed and relax. I was promptly checked in, asked if I was in need of anything, and shown to my room. Since it was mid afternoon and I knew the dinner hour would soon be approaching, I asked the concierge where the best place to eat was. I knew Cedar Rapids had some restaurants worth checking out (thanks Yelpers!), but I always like to hear recommendations from those who live in the area. I had to giggle to myself when he recommended the Olive Garden and TGI Friday's. I felt like a total food snob. So, I politely thanked him and made my way to my room. The room itself was quite spacious, the bed was very comfortable, and everything was extremely clean. The hotel also offers a complimentary breakfast in the morning. Nothing exciting - continental style with the added bonus of a waffle maker. It was great for grabbing something on the go. The hotel also had a pool and small workout room (which I shockingly used). Again - everything was in great shape and very clean. Although I would only travel to Cedar Rapids for work (and for those of you thinking it, it's nothing like the movie "Cedar Rapids") I would definitely stay at the Hawthorn Suites. It's clean, the staff is friendly and there's an Olive Garden nearby. ;)

The Sudbury Court is a Classic Mom & Pop motel…read more As the director of the Route 6 Tourist Association, I have occasions to travel two lane highways many times per year. We sometimes do classic car tours across Iowa along America's longest highway, and the Sudbury Court is one of my favorite stops. (Before I go any further, I pay full price for my rooms, and they are not currently members of the association. So my review is neither biased nor solicited.) My wife and I, along with several other couples on our tours have stayed there many times over the past 4 years, and have enjoyed reasonable rates, clean rooms, and great hospitality. While the amenities are not fully up to some modern standards, the rooms are clean, well maintained, and comfortable, and do feature Wi-Fi, AC, and cable. Sure, a mini fridge would be nice, but you also don't find those in rooms that cost a great deal more every time. Besides the great rates and comfort, you also can't ignore the "cool" factor. How many motels these days have a neon sign? The Sudbury Court is a good old fashioned, well kept up, American owned piece of history. It's hard to ask for more than that. And here is the clincher. Because they are locally owned, and not part of some big chain, the money you spend with them stays in the community and benefits people near them. This is not only good for Marengo, Iowa, this is good for America. Whenever you travel, try and do business with locally owned. It's win-win.

It's cheap -- and you get what you pay for…read more The positives: the rooms are tidy, adequately spacious, and don't smell weird. The owners are nice people. The bathroom (in my room at any rate) was recently redone. The setting is relatively quiet -- there are literally corn fields across the street. And while it sits at the intersection of two highways, traffic on those highways is pretty light; plus the intersection is a four-way stop so the cars are slowing down on their approach, meaning there's much less wind, tire, and engine noise than if they were roaring by at full boil. The negatives: the walls are thin enough that you can hear neighboring rooms' televisions and/or conversations fairly clearly. Decor is way outdated. There was no mini-fridge which I consider a must even in the most base-rate motels. For that reason alone I'd be hesitant to book a room here again. The clincher between a 2-star and a 3-star rating was being woken up at 7:50am by the staff to retrieve a package they had delivered to my room while I was away but was intended for the next room over. For one, I had no intention of being up before 10am, needing desperately to get caught up on sleep. So much for that. For another, it also meant they had entered my room without my knowledge or consent. If they had something for me, they should have kept it at the front desk and left me a message. When I pay for a room, I also pay for privacy -- whether I'm present or not. I'm sure they meant well enough but I was not pleased. Bottom line: if you just need a clean, cheap, no-frills place to crash after a hard day of... well, doing whatever the hell people do out in the middle of Iowa, this place has you covered. Just be sure to bring earplugs in case the folks next door aren't the quiet type; and if you value your privacy, be sure to remind the owners to stay the hell out of your room.
