Found this place here on Yelp. Decided we wanted to stay in the East Bay, so we ventured out. The owners are very hospitable and even spent time chatting with us. Very nice! Husband and I did tastings and we really liked the Cabs. I liked the Hillside Pink too so I decided to take a bottle home and share with a girlfriend, at some point. I came here for a girls day out with a friend. Called at 9am and was able to reserve for 1pm tasting without any issues. Samantha was the one who helped us. She gave us a little history on the place. They are family owned and family run, and she is 4th generation. She's super friendly and was very patient with us. I learned how to say Sangiovese. Now I can go order this in an Italian restaurant and sound like I know what I'm ordering . Thank you Samantha. Tastings are $10/person, but is waived if you buy a bottle (any bottle, and a bottle starts at only $10). I really enjoyed my time here. The tasting room is decent size, could probably fit 20 people max. It was air conditioned. They were setting up for a concert yesterday, so we were not allowed to have outdoor tasting, but outdoor would've been too hot for us anyway. I tried a variety of wines and the 3 I liked the most were the Sangiovese and Reserve Zinfandel, and Reserve Zinfandel Port. I like sweeter wines and these three were fruity and delicious. I ended up purchasing the port. Plenty of parking on the property, but not clearly marked. I wish there were lines, I parked under the tree out in front. Overall it was a lovely experience and such a beautiful winery in the middle of a residential area! I would totally take guests here in the future. Maybe pack a little charcuterie board to go with the tasting. They do not serve food here, except for special events like the Luau that Samantha so kindly told us about. I'm ashamed to say that this was my first visit to the winery. I've lived in the area for over 20 years, literally blocks from The Tasting Room. I've had the wine in restaurants and purchased it at stores but never visited the actual Winery. Sam and her aunt took care of us during our visit, and gave us the history of the winery and how long it's been around! We even learned about a new wine I had never heard of before, Valdigue from Gamay grapes - Delicious!! A cute, local, family run winery that has been around for over 100 years. We like to come for the magnum bottles of the Hillside Red. A case of 6 magnum bottles (double the size of a standard 750mL bottle) runs only about $50. It's a great affordable table wine for when we are entertaining a lot of people, and we love to be supporting a small local business. The dude and I came to this Hidden Gem of a winery on 4/02/21 as I waned to go wine tasting locally. We were happy to find a winery near the dudes grandparents residence which was like 15 minutes away. I called about 10am to make a reservation for 1pm. The lady who answered was so warm and welcoming. She took our reservation with no problem at all. I ended up calling back at 11am as our break reservation was taking longer to be seated and I believe I spoke to the same lady and she had no problems changing our reservation time to 2pm to be on the safe side. We arrived about 15 minutes early and there was only one party of 2 wrapping up. We were seated immediately and even got our choice of where to sit. It was pretty empty which was nice as we got the whole vineyard and wine experience to ourselves like a private outing. Due to COVID or I'm not sure if this has been their policy but you only have one hour to wine taste which the dude and I were there about 45 minutes or slightly longer as we took pictures afterwards and before being seated. The owners were very friendly and informative on their wines and the dude and I felt it was a steal of 5 wine tastings for $10 which is not bad at all!! The wine fee Is waived if you purchase a bottle of wine priced at $10 or more. The wines all tasted amazing! The dude and I ended up getting 3 bottles for $40 which is not bad and the wine tasting fee waived! I gifted a bottle of Chardonnay to the dudes 91 year old grandmother as she loves wine and we usually have a glass or two together. The grounds were so beautiful and we almost missed our turn as it looked like a residence but it was it! So beautiful and the dude and I took many pictures and I forgot it mention it was very windy which didn't take away from the lovely experience we had there. I would strongly recommend this winery and the dessert wine ports! They were my favorites taste like raisins on steroids soooo yummy! It was a rainy Saturday and we thought we'd stop by the local winery to do a little tasting. A very nice woman came to greet us and offered us tastings. The room is very rustic and had some other items for sale along with the wine. I picked up a few bottles of the old vine Zin, pickled asparagus, and another bottle of wine for my son. We enjoyed chatting with her and learning of some events happening later in the summer. We will definitely come back as the tasting is free if you buy a bottle of wine! Amazing budget winery. I was honestly pretty surprised there was a vineyard in Martinez but pleasantly shocked. They are nice and friendly and have a couple of cute dogs running around. They let you choose 5 wines from a selection of 10-15 to try and the tasting is free if you buy a bottle, which starts at like $10 so this place is a steal. They have nice picnic benches outside where you can enjoy the wine. Only things I wish was that you could walk in the vineyards/nearby and that there is no food pairing for the wine. read more

Yes, times 1000 I absolutely love this small and quaint winery. I got to meet the owner and her daughter and granddaughter which was super super adorable. It's a very small winery owned by a sweet family and I actually enjoyed the $10 wine tasting which becomes free if you purchase a bottle This place is extremely welcoming, and I think having a dog or a dogs there has made this place one of my favorite wineries in the bay. The hillside red and hillside pink are my two favorite of their private stock selection. From their reserve I've had the sandstone and Sirah. Dry yet perfectly blended. Of course I'm a sweets lady, and the 2018 Late Harvest Zinfandel and Private Stock port. Both excellent in taste and in color. Nice little gem in Martinez, great if you're in the east bay and don't want to travel far. Price point is good with a complimentary waive upon purchase of bottle. I was disappointed that there is no outside food allowed and they don't serve food there, I think its irresponsible to serve alcohol with with no food. The wine was OK nothing out of this world, I guess I've been spoiled by other places that are a bit more generous on # of tastings, e,g, there was no one else there and there were plenty of bottles open, it would've been nice to have been offered another taste of something, for me, that is the determining factor if I am going to join a club or spend more money. I did buy a bottle of champagne and the experience was about 30 -40 minutes long so I wouldn't suggest this as a stand alone visit. read more

What a lovely little place to taste wines! We arrived mid afternoon on a Friday to a sign that said reservations and walk in on availability. I suppose we were lucky there were already tasters in the room as we went in straight in. There were 15 different varieties to taste, and there were three of us at five tastings per person for $10; we decided to try every single one and share. They have a few picnic tables outside under the shade so we settled in. Afterward, we went in to purchase a bottle each and discovered if you buy a bottle the tasting is free! A hidden gem! My wife and I wanted to go to Napa today but didn't have time. We searched wineries in the area and saw Viano Vineyards. They have nine picnic tables, a small grassy area, a scenic vista, and really good, affordable wines. Our three crazy kids had fun while my wife and I alternated tasting. Visited the winery on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to what I stumbled upon. As we entered the tasting room we were greeted promptly and headed straight to the bar. The setting of the room was dimly lit with wine everywhere!! Uber casual tasting room with the owners on-site and VERY personable. Lucky for us they were kind enough to share their history of the winery and what type of notes and flavor profiles that are expected of the wines. I'm by no means a wine expert but I do go off of what taste delicious to me. I walked out of there with 3 bottles; 2 whites and 1 port. (I don't even like ports!) Didn't have good vibes about this place immediately when I called for a reservation. The woman who answered the phone made me feel like I was an inconvenience by asking for a tasting time. I figured maybe they were just busy. When I arrived there was just one other couple and far from busy. The wines weren't great especially the reds. When I asked to try an additional wine, their response was " that's going to have to be your last one." I was confused did they not want to sell wine? What a fun find! Who knew there was a winery in Martinez? We had some time to kill before heading to a dinner party in Martinez and decided to stop in for a tasting. It's a super casual, laid back. tasting room and the winery is family owned and operated. We received great service from the woman who helped us, who was attentive, friendly and shared some of the history of the winery. Tastings are super affordable at $5, and the tasting fee is waived if each person purchases a bottle. My boyfriend really enjoyed the chardonnay, and I enjoyed the red blend; we each found a few other things we liked as well. The wines were all super affordable (nothing over $20 with the cheapest being $6.50), which was refreshing given how easy it is to blow tons of money on a bottle of wine in California ;) We wound up taking home 5 bottles for an affordable $54, 3 of which they were able to give us chilled to bring to our party. For the price point and quality, the wine was a great value. Definitely a fun and unexpected experience worth checking out in Martinez! read more

Ohhh noes... A winery nearly in walking distance to my work place? That's not even the worst part. Their wine is good. Really good. At every stop on our wine tour after this place, we heard comments like "Oh, they're great!" "Love Viano." "They dry farm, which is incredible." "Great little family run winery." Adding insult to injury - they carry an Old Vine Zin. Even though it's much easier on the wallet than the other panty dropping wines out there, it can easily hold it's own in quality & depth. On my first visit, I walked out of here with a couple of arm loads of wine. Including an irrisitably good 2005 Sand Rock Hill Zinfandel & a bottle of red wine vinegar. We turn off the road onto a gravel drive and it was obvious we were not in Napa!! Our car alerted a woman in the main house to come over to the tasting room to help us. When I looked at the tasting menu I wondered how good the wine was going to be when I see a $4 Hillside Red and Hillside White. $4...for a bottle of wine? $4?!!?!? How can it be good? We started our tasting with the Hillside Red and White. You know what? It was good, it was really, really good. The red was a great daily wine, a great wine to drink after a day of work or take to a BBQ at a friends house. The white was perfect for cooking, not too sweet, not too dry. We bought a mixed case between everyone in the party which brought the price down to a whopping $3.40 a bottle. Alright Viano -- bring it on! The Reserve Selection Wines were even better. The Sand Rock Hill Zinfandel, the Vintage Zinfandel Port, the Late Harvest Zinfandel oh my (nothing over $20!!!). I could have stayed there all day savoring the wine. As we drink the wine we are informed about the farm. They have hundreds of acres in Martinez which the family has been making wine since around 1920. They have done a great job keeping the wine flavorful, having a wide variety of tastes, and keeping the price down. In the end I left with 2 Hillside Reds, 2 Hillside Whites, and a Late Harvest Zinfandel ($15/bottle). There is a tasting fee for the Reserve Wine tasting but not charged if you buy wine. Wine in Martinez? Mooooo! Yes it's true and the Viano Winery is not far from the Refineries and the suburban sprawl of this Central Contra Costa Costa Community. Viano Winery is conveniently located in a cute hidden valley midway between the Livermore Valley and the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Who knew? Viano is also a multi-generational Family Estate that was founded in 1920 and very much in character with Martinez's Italian roots. The Family purchased the already planted vineyard which was previously established in 1888. It reminded them of their vineyards in Piedmont, Italy, as the area is still known locally as Vine Hill. I have purchased Viano Wine at various stores and have visited their tasting room. There's even a decent space available for a modest after work event. I'm partial to their reds, which I find to be an honest good value. read more

Let me start by saying that 4 stars is pushing it. I'd give the place 2.5-3 as far as the wine, but 4 for the service and the friendliness of the woman in the tasting room. The vines are pretty dismal-looking this time of year, but it's still cool to be able to go to a vineyard out in Contra Costa County and just relax and try free--yeah, the sign says $.75 for samples of certain wines, but when you buy a bottle, your tasting is FREE--samples of liberal size. From Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon, Viano has a pretty wide range of wines, ranging from $4 a bottle (their Hillside Red & White, neither of which I was very impressed by) to a little under $20 (Late Harvest Zins, etc). To say I wasn't expecting more from the wine would be a lie, as I was very impressed with the Zin I get at Concord Costco for $5 a pop. It may not be the best Zin I've ever had, but for $5, it's freakin' delicious. Unfortunately, I think that may be their best offering. The Lodi and Sandcreek Zins, which were over twice the cost of the other Zin, weren't as tasty, and the other wines I tried (Cab, Chardonnay, etc) didn't particularly excite me. The Petite Sirah especially was a letdown. HOWEVER, I'm going to be going back. I got a $15 bottle of Cab that, at 10 years old, is described as "earthy," but smells to me like feet and mushrooms. But not in a bad way. Overall, this is a friendly, unpretentious winery that's great for people who want to cut costs. What more do you need? read more
