The Long Version: I had heard about Schoolhouse Pizza when they first opened up their original location in New Edinburgh and wanted to try them but I'm so rarely ever in that area. So when I heard that they opened up a second location in Little Italy, which is much closer to me, I knew I had to check it out. I like that they sell pizza by the slice so you can try out different varieties. I went with the pepperoni to keep it simple, although I was tempted by their garlic mushroom white pizza. All slices are $7 each. And they have about 4 different types at any given time. I liked that the pizza was thin crust with blistery parts. The pepperoni was the small cup and char type which is less common here in Ottawa, so I enjoyed that. The cheese was ok, but since the pizza was sitting under the heat lamp, the cheese wasn't all melty. No cheese pull, lol. The slice was good, but lacked wow factor for me. Perhaps the whole pizzas are better, or maybe there's more wow with their other varieties. So I'm rating 3 stars for A-OK for now and will update/upgrade when I try other types and/or order an entire pizza. Service was pleasant. I wish I was here for a few more days to explore the rest of the menu (flaming halloumi drizzled in honey!). For today I had the bruschetta flatbread (cherry tomatoes, Parmesian, balsamic reduction) - delicious. The flatbread was outstanding. Followed by seafood paella, also delicious. All paired with their house Italian red, a slightly bold but classically dry Italian wine. It all fit perfectly. Only regret is... no room for dessert. The flatbread is definitely fit for two... I'm looking forward to coming back. It'll be a while, probably won't be in Kanata for at least a few months, but Via Marzo is top of my list when I'm back. And next time... dessert! (Maybe the lemon cake... or chocolate torte... or baklava... hrmmmm).

I don't remember what flavour it was, but I do remember it was delicious. My second Sconewitch experience was at their Beechwood location and it was a bit disappointing because the scone was not fluffy and was a bit dry. However, I think that was a one-off because since then my experiences have been great. The scones are fluffy and tasty like my first memory of them. They now have 4 locations, so they're definitely doing something right. This location in Westboro opened up in January 2021 in an old converted house. They have seats to dine-in or you can take out. Street parking only. If you like scones, I think you'll love The Sconewitch. Usually I like trying out new businesses that open up in my neighbourhood, but admittedly I'm not a coffee connoisseur. I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between a $50 cup of Kopi Luwak and a cup of Folgers instant coffee, lol. So coffee shops don't really excite me. However, I recently learned that Bower Coffee Company sells baked goods from a business called Adam Bakes. I've been wanting to try treats from Adam Bakes for a while now, but they are only open on Saturdays 8am-12pm and not in my neighbourhood, so their limited hours have prevented me from trying them. I didn't realize that they also sold their baked goods to other businesses for resale, so when I discovered this, I planned a little coffee date for my husband and I at The Bower Coffee Company :) I chose a Cinnamon Swirl Blondie from Adam Bakes ($4.85) and my husband chose a Peanut, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip cookie from Art-Is-In Bakery ($5.25) and we got a regular 12 oz coffee ($3.25). The coffee tasted like any other coffee to me (unsurprising, lol). My husband is more of a coffee connoisseur than I am and his comment was it was a bit too watery, but otherwise ok. I loved the Blondie. It was rich and I think there's cheesecake swirled into it because it had creamy bits to it. It had a potent cinnamon flavour. I really enjoyed it and so did the hubster. I ended up hauling my butt out to Adam Bakes the following Saturday morning to try their other offerings, which weren't available at Bower Coffee. Adam Bakes will get its own review. I noticed that the prices are cheaper buying directly from Adam Bakes than at Bower Coffee, but I guess that's not surprising. The cookie was unremarkable in my opinion, but the hubby enjoyed it. It had whole peanuts in it as well as peanut butter and chocolate chips. It was soft and chewy, and the whole peanuts gave it the occasional crunch. Service at Bower Coffee was great. The barista asked me for the Blondie if I wanted a centre piece or an edge piece. I know some people like the crispiness of edge pieces, but I prefer the softness of centre pieces, so I was happy to be asked. The decor is clean lines minimalist. It's not a huge space, but has a decent amount of tables. It was bustling on a Sunday morning. Overall, a nice place for a coffee date, albeit a bit pricey in my opinion, but I get it, everything is expensive these days :/ We walked there, but it's street parking only for those coming by car. We were in our nation's capital on a dreary Monday…read more But I wasn't planning to leave the area before eating in Quebec, and with La Belle Province right over the bridge from the downtown hotel, a late checkout time was the right time. The Yelp app was showing its laggy self with scant reviews over the last couple years especially, so I punched in a random restaurant in Gatineau (Hull) and set the wheels in motion. That restaurant was no longer in existence, but led us to a cute little tourist area with the narrow walking streets of cobblestone lined with boutique shops and empty patios on that early Monday afternoon. There was a typical bar in its place and the proprietor appeared in the doorway and came out on the deck to chat. All it takes is a cheerful "Bonjour-Hello how are you?" to break the ice with most Quebecers and he was happy to recite his menu of poutine and wings. Unfortunately no Montreal Smoked Meat, but he was happy to point us in the right direction to Le 138 up the street and up the hill in walking distance - perfect! Le 138 is one of those all-in-one food stops for takeaway as well as dine-in. Either is fine and equally tempting. It turned out their smoked meat was not the typical piled-high-on-rye with mustard and a kosher pickle. Instead it was on an Italian bun (the theme was Italian here) and came with various toppings as options, so build-your-own. I had the smoked meat poutine, which had cubes of the iconic meat, rather than thin slices, which was kinda different. We also had the creamy butternut squash soup (careful, there's plenty of dairy in French cooking if you are not tolerant) which was amazing, as well as a container of chopped peppers with red onion, olives and feta salad. Whenever I'm in Quebec I always look for their salads as they are a fave of mine and a signature specialty for them. Half of the space is a takeout counter with savory pies, desserts (parfaits yum), cookies and cupcakes, sandwiches, salads as well as a coffee counter. The other half is a quaint sit-down dine-in area with an island bar, and plenty of bottles of liquor lining the walls. Cute little two-top tables take up the space which was empty except for us on that afternoon. Before eating, as an apéritif, we had shooters of an interesting Italian lemon drink. When I asked for it, I could read the servers face, especially when she asked "this?" and I said "yeah". She was wondering wtf. The colour was very impressive (see pic), and the taste was amazing, just like a halloween lemon sucker! Very good!! The server was so interested in it, she poured some for herself and the cook in the back. She walked by a little later with big wine glasses full, commenting that we had got them to start afternoon drinking, with a big smile. Highly recommended!

Dessert was Dubai chocolate ice cream, a ball of vanilla chocolate rolled in knafeh, chocolate, and pistachio sauce, tasting like a giant ball of frozen Ferraro Rocher! It's a small casual eatery with about 6-7 tables, and appeared to be quite busy, even on a Sunday evening. You order at the counter and they bring the meals to your table in short order.
