McMillian Middle School is highly regarded for its two internationally recognized magnet programs, the Cambridge Robotics Magnet and the Cambridge Medical Magnet for grades six through eight. Both McMillian Park and McMillian Middle School were named in honor of Howard D. McMillan (1919-1975) who began teaching at Shenandoah Elementary school in 1955. Through a series of promotions he became the associate superintendent of the Dade County Public Board of Instruction in 1971. He is best remembered for helping to integrate the Miami Dade School system in the late 1960's during desegregation. McMillian Park amenities include a baseball field, club house, covered playground, lighted soccer field. The park is used by youth baseball, football, and soccer leagues. This clean and well maintained park is an excellent recreational resource for families with kids and sports enthusiasts.

I appreciate that there is plenty of covered space for kids to play and most importantly, shaded areas for adults! The playgrounds have the rubber ground which adds points as a parent because you don't need to shake out shoes or worry about dirt. They even have a small pavilion for bbqs and parties. Every 4th of July, Cutler Bay throws a huge party at Whispering Pines Park after the annual parade. They have vendors, bands, face painting and food. This was renovated several years ago however I was disappointed that no restrooms were added during construction. That's the only thing missing from this hidden gem in Cutler Bay.

This is a wide open park. It is also very huge and has different sections. There is a parking lot…read moreby a huge open field. Near the parking lot is a restroom facility and some picnic tables sprinkled around. They have some beautiful trees over there including banyan trees. The field is ginormous and has a disc golf course. A little further down from that area is another part of the park. There is a large parking lot over there and a huge football/soccer field and 8-10 artificial turf soccer fields that are enclosed by a fence. They have a covered patio area with picnic tables over there as well. Even though there are a bunch of trees around, there is not a lot of shade on either section of the park, so plan accordingly. You do not need a military ID to visit the park, as it sits outside of the gate. It is a very peaceful park and easy to get to. If you are looking for a low key park to hang out and relax then this is your spot.

Henry Flagler brough his Florida East Coast Railway from West Palm Beach into the area now known as Kendale Lakes in 1903. In 1926 a hurricane devastated the area plunging it into an economic depression. The New Deal Program created by President Roosevelt helped to provide work and many CCC workers built structures all over Miami Dade County. During WWII Kendale Lakes remained largely rural as the rest of Miami sprang up. In the 1970's and 80's it was considered a bedroom community with homes owned by doctors and lawyers. Today Kendale Lakes is a well-loved suburban community with excellent schools and beautiful parks like this one. Kendale Park has a large open area for walking your dog, play, and exercise. A paved walkway winds through the park and in the center of the park is a playground and outdoor exercise equipment. This is the perfect place for people living in the community to enjoy the outdoors without having to leave the neighborhood. Anyone looking for a larger park with more amenities can avail themselves of the vast nearby Kendall Indian Hammocks Park.

The large playground in its center, emphasizes that this park is mainly for children, parents, or those out for a leisurely stroll. There are signs around that say on Friday evenings, a family movie is shown in the park, but since I have never attended any of these events, I cannot be certain as to how many people attend these events and how crowded it gets. But on a typical day or night, the park is mostly empty, and those benches under trees makes you just want to sit down and watch the day dissipate into the night.

Sugarwood Park is a very nice neighborhood park located behind Claude Pepper Elementary School…read more Claude Pepper was a long term democratic politician who represented Florida in the United States Senate from 1936 to 1951, and the Miami area in the United States House of Representatives from 1963 until his death in 1989. There is also a beach park named in his honor in Fort Pierce. This rural part of unincorporated Southwest Miami-Dade is called the Hammocks and Sugarwood is one of the neighborhoods in the Hammocks. Sugarwood Park has a .3 mile lighted loop walking path, basketball courts, playground, benches, and tot lot. There is also a fitness court that features five pieces of easy to use, low impact gym equipment designed for cardio and strength training and even wheelchair workouts. Landscaping in the park includes butterfly attracting plants. This park is great recreational spot for families and people looking to exercise in South Miami.

There are 4 sets of swings--2 are regular swings and 2 other ones are chair-like for those who just want to sit back and recline. Overall, this is a nice park to take a stroll, play some bball, or take kids on the playground.

This park is a bit old, but relatively well maintained. There is tons of free street parking around…read moreand this is one of the rare parks that are not pet friendly. The grass is cut are amenities are decently maintained. There are 2 tennis courts. They are pretty good and were very busy while I was there. It seems like that is the park's amenities that is the favorite and gets the most use. There is about a quarter mile paved walking/jogging trail around the park. That was getting a lot of use too. There is a lot of trash along the backside of the fence though. There are some benches within the playground area and scattered around the park. There are also some picnic tables around the park. The park also has a full basketball court. The court is in good shape, but one of the backboards and goals are missing. There is also a decent playground with two banks of swings, one for smaller kids and one traditional. There is a jungle gym with a slide and a thing to climb on. The ground is covered with a combination of artificial grass and wood chips. You will find restroom facilities here as well, in addition to a covered pavilion with picnic tables under it. You will need to make reservations for the pavilion The park has a huge baseball/kickball field that has a huge outfield that can be used to play Frisbee, soccer, football, catch and the like. It is well groomed and very spacious. All and all, this is a neat park. I would probably get there early because can get very hot out there and many people get there when the park opens to beat the heat.

They also host a annual fire work show here on the fourth of July that is AMAZING! Tons of fun games, entertainment, Food trucks, and Fireworks. Its a must to come and check this out.

Directly next to South Miami Middle is this open space that functions for all sorts of purposes…read more Green grass galore & space for sports- it's a lovely spot to bring your family to spend the day. Plenty of leagues in the area use this park for their practices and events so if you're a soccer mom- you've likely ended up here. It's a nice spot to walk your dog when it's emptier in the early mornings or late evenings. The park also has parking which makes it a plus for those commuters. Most importantly, there's actually bathrooms which makes things a lot easier when you just gotta go. The area is in the nicer edge of SoMi so the neighborhood is definitely aesthetically pleasing. It's right in between Miller and Sunset on 67th Avenue so you can exit either road and be here in a heartbeat. Now, go enjoy those great outdoors.
