They have canoes for rent, a campfire area, and they have a sign that says butterfly garden - though I didn't see any butterfly and didn't quite know where exactly that garden may be. He served in the House of Representatives and had a successful law practice in Miami where he practiced environmental law. It makes sense that a nature preserve would be named for him. The 30 acre parcel of land that makes up the park has three distinct habitats: pineland, tropical hardwood hammock, and drained Everglades slough. Hiking trails run through these areas. You do have to be careful while hiking, especially on the half mile Old Cuttler Hammock Nature Trail that is behind the nature center. This area was completely destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 but the canopy has since come back. There are a lot of limestone formations that are easy to trip on. Another of the trails leads to a canal where you canoe and fish while yet a different trail winds through a native tree arboretum. There is a nature center open daily from 10 to 4 with live animal exhibits and an 822 gallon freshwater aquarium. You can schedule tours and nature study programs at the nature center and rent kayaks. Picnic areas and rest rooms are available. Every Saturday night from 8 to 10 PM the Southern Cross Astro's meet in the parking lot near the main entrance. They have the largest public use telescope in Miami and the event is free. You might see a satellite, meteor, or the International Space Station. I hope to join them one evening.

We're absolutely delighted to overnight in quiet Pod 5 site 1 which is a back in site with full hookup. Larry Thompson was a humor columnist for the Miami Herald for more than two decades until his death February 18, 1973. He is in the Florida Newspaper Hall of Fame. His wife Gladys "Penny" Thompson (née Rhodes), who died September 22, 1975, was a pioneer in women's aviation during the 1940s-1950s. She is in the Florida Aviation Hall of Fame and the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. She was the Florida chapter president of the Ninety-Nines, the women's pilot organization founded by Amelia Earhart. While in the Civil Air Patrol, she flew over the Gulf of Mexico searching for German submarines during World War II. Her plane was one of several hundred destroyed in a 1945 blimp hangar fire at the Naval Air Station Richmond, part of which was rebuilt as the park.

The entrance to the park is weird and you enter through the shopping plaza and it's on your far left. Don't worry, you're going the right way. You'll see it at the end. Can't miss it. When you walk it, the park has a huge wow factor because you just can't believe how big this park really is. Needless to say, my kids were in heaven. I joked and said I paid to get into The Berry Farm but this awesome park is free! Haha. There are basically three different sections. Left, middle and right side. It's pretty AMAZING!!! The larger kids area has a wide range of playsets including swings, slides, rocks to climb, and a large spinning climbing "tree". There's also plenty of benches and a covered seating area that offers shade. 2. Nice sized skatepark which has recently been painted. 3. Nice sized indoor shelter to host birthday parties. You need to call and book in advance. 4. Fields are nicely run and often hosts softball and baseball games. All in all, one of the nicer parks in Miami. A great place to visit with the kids. They also frequently host county and local activities and events as well.

They had parking attendants that were great at getting us parked and out of the venue (though the parking was pretty tight.. but we got in and out fine). There were lots of tents from various service providers giving out candy and brochures. My 2-year-old got a good amount of candy! The DJ was great. He played a mix of kid music, group dance music, and adult party songs. There were food trucks but we didn't eat. We did, however, have some drinks, and I saw two bars including the one where we got our drinks. They had the "luxury" port-a-potty trailers that had an attendant helping direct bathroom traffic. I think there was also a haunted house but we didn't go since our child was young. All in all, our experience of this event was great, and we would definitely go again next year. My daughter and I have also actually been to the playground here once. The playground itself was nice. We felt a little uncomfortable on that day because there was an event going on in the building right next to the playground, and people from there were in and out from the playground and it just felt weird like we were crashing their party. But otherwise a nice playground, and we really enjoyed the event at the park.

For the most part, owners are very observant and responsible for their dogs. If a dog is causing a problem, I've always seen the owner remove it from the park. Thank you for that!! Responsible dog owners are the best. I wish there was more parking, because during busy hours it fills up fast. Lots of great amenities, including trash/recycling cans, dog poop bag stations, water fountains, pet wash station, pavilion with picnic table and an outlet, little free library, etc. This park is also HUGE- we love doing laps on the walking path or watching our dog play in the water. Overall very clean too.
